I'm overwhelmed by the support this first video has gotten! Thank you all so much. I really hope to continue creating videos like this and if you want to support me further here's a link :) bmc.link/virtualbro
Thank you for the great words about our game and for making this video. We appreciate the support and we will continue to work hard to make Broken Edge one of the best VR games there is!
(This may be a dumb idea but meh i think it sounds like it has some potential) what about a sort of bayonet class, where the "stance" is holding it up to your chest like your aiming the rifle, and then you have one quick jab at the enemy. It could also have a side bullet feature that serves to diminish a small portion of the enemies sword once per round, as a way to force them into a parry before your attack?
I usually don't like quest specific games, they always feel like lesser versions of the beefier PC games, but this is definitely the first for me at least that doesn't come off that way. I'll have to give it a try when I can.
the single best part of this game is occasionally seeing your opponent's "uh oh" reaction when they look down at their sword and see there's nothing left of it then look up at you with your sword mostly intact Edit: Apparently a lot of people agree with this statement, I shall absolutely do it more often for comedic effect
I love how emotive people can be in VR without saying a word, it's like a cartoon. You can pretty much hear when someone realises they're in danger or are over-confident, it's something I've never realised until just now.
Bought Vail since it was on sale for 2 bucks and put on my VR headset for the first time in 6 months. Very first match I ran around a corner and found a new player fumbling around with a mag and then dropping it, then he noticed me, panicked, dropped another mag, then someone came in the room and shot us both.
This is a SOLID step in the right direction for VR. A lot of the common drawbacks mentioned at the beginning of the video with other VR titles is why I've basically put my headset back in it's case and stored it in the closet. We need more games that do something like this and we need the tech to keep up with it too. We also need some higher quality, lightweight VR gear.
The tech exists, the affordability doesnt. Though I always wondered if I could recycle the lenses from a broken vr set and diy a headset myself, after all there are not that complex
I have recently taken up HEMA, which for those who don't know is Historical European Martial Arts, and lemme tell ya, Broken Edge has absolutely prepared me for that. The game has improved my reflexes so much, and has also taught me that smaller movements greatly overpower large ones, which is true to real life.
YES these are the games we NEED in vr. Stuff like this and rumble are the most awesome ways to do progression in vr games, scrap the numbers, and make it skillbased instead. It's so satisfying
as a fighting game player, I was a little skeptical at first but my eyes just got wider the longer the video went on. Your description of how the progression is based off personal skill rather than unlockables or loot, as well as growth in understanding of how to efficiently use tools and recognize matchups and develop varied strategies is EXACTLY what traditional fighting games are all about, and to hear and see all of this be able to be captured in a VR experience is amazing. Between this and RUMBLE VR (Which I also recommend you give a try, as its physical, form-based control is similarly interesting) I really hope I get the chance to pick up a VR headset soon.
If you like broken edge, I’d HIGHLY recommend Until You Fall vr. It has great sword combat, and a surprisingly high amount of playtime (and replayability). Anyways, amazing video!
@@VirtualBroVR At 1:23 --> Sword game are physics-based...or not. I'd argue they're physics-based or script-based. Script-based being close to QTE mechanics (parry with a predetermined move to be allowed to attack). Notable titles would be Until you fall/Vader Immortal/Asgard's Wrath
great video. unfortunately i could not get into broken edge. i tried but even with the slightest latency can make the difference between you having a fair fight and you getting hit before you see it. That and it seems like the abilities only want to activate 10% of the time
aw man that sucks! yeah recently I've been crashing every time I get into a match, hopefully they will fix that soon! The abilities do take some practice to get right!
I recently tried this game and something I find interesting is that after playing different classes I sometimes adopt that class’s playstyle even when I’m not playing that class. For example when I’m playing knight I’ll sometimes spin my blades around like the Persian since it’s a good way to keep my guard up.
Hmm who knew a game focused around fencing would be so much fun! Oh wait maybe because fencing already is so much fun! Everyone needs to try fencing at least once🤺
I haven't really played since the early days of the game (THERE IS A PIRATE NOW????) but I just wanted to add, during the time I played this game everyone was extremely encouraging and helpful even while in combat. I think in the few weeks I played that game I only encountered 2 toxic people and even they weren't bad compared to most others. Not only is the game amazing but it attracted the perfect community.
This is a brilliant way of solving the issue of wild waving in the air like on the wii. You could train people how to throw punches with perfect technique using this. So cool.
You should try out Ironlights! It works on a very similar basis of online vr combat with its own twist of slow motion. I think you’d like it if you enjoyed broken edge
This looks really cool. My VR set broke awhile back but I bought the game in case I forget by the time I have VR again. Its actually on sale on steam so that helps. So while I have yet to play it, something interesting that they could add is 2v2 so you can duel alongside a friend
doesn’t remind me of a VR Mortal Kombat, it’s like a VR For Honor imo. it’s a pretty cool concept actually. & if they can keep developing this type of game to keep up with VR the better it gets i can see it get a decent player/fan base.
in essence kinda like Rumble, yeah you unlock the moves but the true experience is your actual experience that you gain playing actually practicing like any other skill in life.
This framework is very interesting. I don't think you need to give up physics based weapons though, seems like this would help reinforce weighted weapons. Forcing the player to conform the speed of their motions to the specific requirements of a technique or spell definitely seems like a fruitful way forward. Still waiting for a large open world that has finely tuned sword play, wand work and interactive spellcraft / interactive crafting in general.
I couldnt agree more with the Intro. Im sooo done with all the "realistic swordfight games that simulate real weight and physics as accurate as possible etc. etc.". Like.. let me have some fun! Let me go nuts. Im playing games for a reason, if i want realistic swordfighting i go find some LARPing sessions...
I played Ironlights for a long while and really enjoyed it's take on PVP blade combat, and I still recommend it But I think I am going to be checking this one out too.
We (BE devs) have a lot of respect for Ironlights. PvP Melee combat is one of the great challenges of VR, I think both games are pioneers of the genre (recognizing that Ironlights came first). I get triggered that many comments are dismissing us as a copy of Ironlights. We do everything differently: movement, blade clashes, offense, defense, health, everything is radically different! They have ranged attacks, we have Blade Arts and secondary blades. We also have different strategies to mitigate latency. And for the record, all of BE's main design orientation were set in stone when Ironlights released. It gets to me because it implies we disrespect Ironlights. Of course we can't ask for all comments to informed, weighted feedback (I can guess those persons didn't play the game or listen to this video). I think both games propose great takes on PvP VR Melee combat, and that both game focus on different aspects. We both are pushing the genre forward.
Forcing people to take stances is cool. But a lot of these is not making them take the style of the fighter. Like the Samurai you said has to perform Kata (I think that’s the term I’ve primarily Studied in HEMA, not Japanese swordsmanship) while just standing there? That’s obviously not something you’d expect a actual warrior to do. And once they are actually fighting it’s all bets off. I do think it’d be cool if there was some system to reward actually learning the swordsmanship. And having stance positions be used is a good idea. But they will be similar across most swords and cultures. Not 100% all the same but a lot of stances that are nearly the same show up across a lot of different areas. It would also be relevant how long it stayed awakened. Depending on how aggressive the fight is stances become much less places you hang out in, and more like positions you momentarily end up in at the end of a swing or following the retracting of a thrust, before you then launch the next use of your weapon. So it would need to stay active for a while.
This actually isn't the first game to do this style of swordplay combat. Another great title that did sword PvP with the fencing style also in full motion, Swords of Gurrah is incredibly fun.
Glad this got some attention with this video, after the death of swords of gurrah (super underrated vr swordfighter that died D; ). This game fills that void in my virtual heart, sad that not many people play this thaaaat much tho D;
Not sure if someone has already mentioned the game here, or on another video, but you may want to check out Rumble if you havent already. It's vr fighting game where you earth bend using martial arts inspired stances to attack and defend with earth (basically Avatar the Last Air Bender). Havent played Broken Edge (yet) but the way described skill based progression is exactly the thing I love about Rumble as well (there's a limited amount of moves currently but I still learn something new every time I open the game). It is PC vr only right now, unfortunately. Anyway, nice video. Gonna subscribe, look forward to watching more from you
Just got my first TIE in this game. You wouldn't ever expect that to happen, but in the 5th round both my and the opponent's blade stomps permanently broke at the same time. I'm positively surprised that the game didn't softlock there. Got 6 rounds of battle in a single match there.
this game will make you good at the game but horrible at Hema still waiting for a realistic sword fighting vr game that is multiplayer if you practice Hema don't play Broken edge. you'll find yourself annoyed
This just randomly got recommended to me (i don't even have any experience with VR) But this seriously looks interesting. If i had the necessary equipment i would definitely check it out!
I realized right away that this is a fencing-esc game. And I absolutely love it for that reason. Also I'm SOO sure that I dueled with you at one point as a samurai! Because I recognized that voice right away!
I would have loved to hear more about the sword breaking mechanics we're seeing here. I did Olympic fencing in high school and there's a lot of rules about perries in that, both right-of-way rules about who started moving forward first, and rules about the 'strong' part of the blade vs the 'weak' part (strong=closest to the hilt, weak = closest to the top) and how that dictates who got the perry and therefor the point when both participants hit each other at the same time. It looks like there's something to do with that in the sword breaking mechanic here and I love that idea.
hey I was in a similar boat: I did some fencing and I picked up the game and main duelist (the closest class to fencing irl) I would recommend doing the same as it’s been a lot of fun. the games real strategy with the sword breaking mechanics aren’t really explained well in the video, however I promise you it’s really fun once you get it.
I cant believe he didn't talk about gorilla tag when it was in app labs, best game on vr and still stands as one of the greatest games if not the greatest
Hey Virtual Bro, was just curious: does this game required a lot of space? I’m considering getting an OQ2 but I don’t have the standard required space in my room, though I know a lot of people who play seated.
Looks cool! I don't have (and never had had) any VR stuff, but learning about games like this is always fun. I hope this game does well and those that get to play it enjoy the heck out of it!
I am so over these one trick pony, multiplayer only, VR games costing money for something that's gonna be fun for like 2 hours. 90% of these games would work so much better as free to play games.
I'd only want to do PvP in VR if the other player is stood up with a dresser at his back and a 1 ft carpet at his feet to indicate that if he steps beyond the carpet he is likely to swing into and break his computer monitor (..again.) Otherwise I doubt I could compete with my current setup.
I bought it yesterday after seeing this video. ITS AMAZING GUYS! I just like the video said! How you get better while fighting more. How you exploit the customs of your enemies. Im covered in sweat and my legs are shaky bc Im scuating all the time with the fencer, but damn its so fascinating. I need a shower...
this game looks awesome!!! I loooove that awakening mechanic and the philosophy behind it, thats good game design!! it keeps things feeling fluid and not clunky while forcing you to be more practiced and move the weapon like you would a real one. the fighting styles feel just as stylized as the artstyle is!! speaking of, the artstyle is also very cool!! (although seeing whats going on seems to be difficult sometimes, perhaps players and weapons having a border or more contrast from the backgrounds could help there). looks like a ton of fun!! (dont have vr to ;w;) also, seeing as you compared it to Mortal Combat, I assume you've never heard of For Honor? I say that because For Honor is similar to this game in many ways and if you were familiar with it then you probably would have used it as a comparison instead of Mortal Combat. It's also in that 'kinda like a fighting game but also not, it's weird' category lol, you pick between different classes of medieval warriors across different factions (Knights, Vikings, Samurai, Wu Lin, and others!) and fight! its not a VR game but I really like it, and if you like this maybe you could take a look at it!
i would recommend you try ironlights for a different take on the "non-physics" VR pvp swordfighting genre...it uses regenerating weapons and slow motion during the fighting, managing energy used to make an attack, while your opponent defends, both of you with weapons that you need to regen via moving behind you, like a sort of windup... it's rather unique and really the best system ive found, as with broken edge ive found alot of twitchy kinda weird stuff going on at times that im not a fan of :L
of all times im broke and my headset is bricked, i find out THIS game exists. gonna drop an entire paycheck on a replacement just for this this looks awesome.
that was such a great video I thought you had been doing this for years until I looked at how many videos you have made. Keep up the good work this was a pleasure to watch.

Hey Virtual Bro, was just curious: does this game required a lot of space? I’m considering getting an OQ2 but I don’t have the standard required space in my room, though I know a lot of people who play seated.
It might put you at a disadvantage to have a smaller play-space, but its definitely possible!
@@VirtualBroVR Thank you!
I got tue game a few days ago and it is my new favorite
Looks cool!
I don't have (and never had had) any VR stuff, but learning about games like this is always fun.
I hope this game does well and those that get to play it enjoy the heck out of it!
I'm more of a fan of Ironlights, but Broken Edge just has a feel to it I can't get enough of
I am so over these one trick pony, multiplayer only, VR games costing money for something that's gonna be fun for like 2 hours. 90% of these games would work so much better as free to play games.
The color and art style of this game looks like it's a Vr game out of adventure time, and I'm here for it.
I'd only want to do PvP in VR if the other player is stood up with a dresser at his back and a 1 ft carpet at his feet to indicate that if he steps beyond the carpet he is likely to swing into and break his computer monitor (..again.)
Otherwise I doubt I could compete with my current setup.
god damn thats a extremely clever AND cool solution to a problem like this, 150 iq devs
Seems like a better comparison would be For Honor!
It looks like a really cool game! Thanks for putting it on my radar :)
Also appreciate the trickled in views from you for my B.E guide. 😅
The phrase "OH My God" was going through my mind given the context by the title.
I personaly think that you are very underrated for the quality of your vid
Thank you!
What a banger video! Couldn’t stop watching if I tried. Well done!
Great review and video! I'll probably give the game a try whenever In hell I get VR.
Thanks! Nice!
so the closest thing to a vr bushido blade
this game looks awesome!!! (dont have vr to ;w;)
also, seeing as you compared it to Mortal Combat, I assume you've never heard of For Honor? I say that because For Honor is similar to this game in many ways and if you were familiar with it then you probably would have used it as a comparison instead of Mortal Combat. It's also in that 'kinda like a fighting game but also not, it's weird' category lol, you pick between different classes of medieval warriors across different factions (Knights, Vikings, Samurai, Wu Lin, and others!) and fight! its not a VR game but I really like it, and if you like this maybe you could take a look at it!
Man, this godly video was your first one? Congrats! I don't have a VR but you made me wish i had one!
I wish Yupitergrad 2 would have PvP :( god tier PvP potential
Can u make a video on Into the Radius?
very good review, best one yet. I have some guides as well for any new players looking to get up to speed on the legacy mechanics
I watched your pirate tutorial and it became my favorite class!!
I need more videos like this keep doing this and this is so good for a firsr video
Thank you so much! I'm already working on an exciting new video...subscribe to see it first!
@@VirtualBroVR I've already subscribed and very excited to see what next
i would recommend you try ironlights for a different take on the "non-physics" VR pvp swordfighting genre...it uses regenerating weapons and slow motion during the fighting, managing energy used to make an attack, while your opponent defends, both of you with weapons that you need to regen via moving behind you, like a sort of windup...
it's rather unique and really the best system ive found, as with broken edge ive found alot of twitchy kinda weird stuff going on at times that im not a fan of :L
of all times im broke and my headset is bricked, i find out THIS game exists. gonna drop an entire paycheck on a replacement just for this this looks awesome.
Damn, didn't expect such a smart way of solving spam-slashing, this looks amazing!
If you like Broken Edge vr, try out IronLights! Its a dueling melee vr game based off of real fights!
It doesn't appear to be on Quest store?
that was such a great video I thought you had been doing this for years until I looked at how many videos you have made. Keep up the good work this was a pleasure to watch.
Will do! Thank you!
I sold my Quest cause i didnt play or have any fun games or I beat them but this game right here makes me want to buy another one to only play this + this video was amazingly edited and commentated on, so I subbed
