Hi Tom, your studio setup is impressive. You mentioned wanting a Sony ZV-E10 if budget allows. I'm curious: 1) How would you integrate it into your workflow? 2) Would you consider making a video on recommended crop sensor lenses for it?
1. If I had my own ZV-E10 I would make it my "desk camera" and mainly keep it mounted with the Elgato prompter for any streams, video calls, or videos I want to film at my desk. I'm currently swapping my a7IV in and out for that and it'd be great to set it and forget it. I also used it as an overhead camera A LOT in the time I borrowed it and that was super helpful. A small camera with good lenses is very helpful for top down shots. 2. I don't currently own any crop sensor cameras, but I do have a lens guide video that should be pretty universally applicable: ruclips.net/video/1GO2HTaMahc/видео.html
@@tombuck, you are right! The camera body of the E10 weighs only 100 grams more than a Facecam Pro. I love Elgato products but am so disappointed by the colors and reliability of the Facecam Pro. I keep thinking if I should also get an E10 instead.
@8:57 Yes, the FX3 has 10 bit color UNLESS you're using (for example) the RodesCaster Video as your switcher as part of your recording video signal chain. The RodeCaster Video outputs in 8 bit color. If you're live streaming this shouldn't be an issue. If you're recording 'in-camera,' no problem. 8 bit color only becomes an issue in post production (color correction). Just a thought.
..and because of the MK2, now on ebay good deals can be found on the original ZV-E10.. Lately great dealsappear on ebay, because of release of newer versions of products, like Rode, etc., as well.. ..is a neat camera !
Great video, Tom. I can honestly say from using a variety of cameras these last few years, my ZV-E10 is still my favorite when it comes to creation. It's the most reliable when it comes to autofocus, it has the best lens options available, having comfort features like a headphone jack for monitoring audio/unlimited power with a USB-C charger, and even Active SteadyShot with it's crop as a decent digital stabilizer keep it at the top of my gear rotation. Are there things I'd love to upgrade to for better colors in body, IBIS, better menus, and perhaps an EVF as I start shooting photos more? Sure, but the law of diminishing returns (and my wallet) are both more than content sticking with the original ZV-E10 for more years to come.
Ive been recommending the sigma 16mm to people since the a6300 days. For years i had clients setting up talking heads with the a6400/a6600 and that 16mm. Been a game changer since it was released. The true OG 30mm was also a mind blowing value at release from Sigma.
Ok you are clearly making content specifically for me now so I’ll just ask my question 😂 I told you a week ago I bought the Rodecaster video, well sir I have the Sony a74 and 2 zv e10’s please help me because I don’t know if I need to put it in 4k even though the rodecaster video is only 1080p and also I’m struggling with making the images on the zv e10’s look like the footage of my a7Iv. I want to use the auto switching with voice but not be able to tell that it’s different cameras. Now Mr Buck I’m waiting for the answer 😂 thank you for the content!
Haha, I'm happy to be your personal content creator 😅 For the RCV, the cameras themselves can stay in 4K, so it's only the HDMI output settings you might need to change. It can stay in "auto" or you can switch it to 4K. As for camera colors, sadly the RCV doesn't currently let you adjust input colors (hopefully they'll add that)! So for now, in your camera settings there should be a color/ton option (but it might be in the white balance menu too) where you can adjust the green/magenta shift. You can also go into the "creative look" settings and tinker with the brightness/saturation/etc for picture profiles. Once you have one ZV-E10 matching the a7IV, then you can just use those same settings on the other 👍
@@tombuck thank you sir! I do have another question if you have time. For the podcast camera setup do you still recommend those sigma lenses? Going to grab a couple if you think so. I just wasn’t sure how far or how close the cameras have to be to us. I’m just a barber that had to learn a little videography for my RUclips channel so I’m every bit of an amateur 😂 sorry if these are dumb questions.
Danke! Thank you, Tom! This was a very good video showing starters a decent option. I have the ZV-E10 in use since it was released. It's great value for money. Of cause I'd appreciate the new menu on the MK2 and even more the better battery. But like you, I'd still recommend the ZV-E10 for starters. Of course, you can have higher quality options, like you do. My main camera now is ZV-E1 with a couple of nice lenses in addition to the kit lense. Btw. I got all lenses used including the kit lense.
Heather recently got the E1 and it's fantastic! I'm so impressed. It's basically my FX3 in a smaller body. She did have a couple of instances of overheating, but now it seems like as long as the screen is open it's fine (we have the little Ulanzi calling fan too, just in case).
Great breakdown! I really need to do this with the ZV-E10 II……I got the ZV-E10 II just to make more budget videos on camera gear and it surprised me and the overheating is overhyped. It’s an awesome top down camera that matches my a7siii very well
Great vid, Tom - and apros since my main livestream camera (a ten year old RX10) just went south last week and I had to replace it. Ended up replacing it with a used 1st Gen ZV-E10 that came with the kit lens. I'm now using that with the Sigma 16mm f1.4 (which I also got used for a song). So far, so good - and I'm enjoying the greater ease of use - meaning that with the RX-10, and the a6000 that's flying overhead, I always have to go into the menu system on startup to get out of the payback menu (evidently, whenever you plug either into an HDMI output - like to the ATEM Mini, it goes to the playback menu - very irritating). But I gotta say that the kit lens is perfectly serviceable as a primary lens - depending on the look someone wants. I keep the kit lens on the flying a6000 and it's been a champ.
Great Video Tom! Can't agree more! I get all kinds of comments on my video quality for my channel, socia media commercials, video production for interviews and documentaries, etc. all I use is two ZV-E10's, one with a sigma 16mm, and the other with a sigma 30mm. I even used it to shoot a video promo I did for Earthworks. They loved it. I have no desire to upgrade even though I share the same gripes. I will say when I use my ZV-E10 for streaming as a webcam, it still is far superior an image quality than any of my 4K $300-$500 4K webcams, I saved so much money on these cameras so I could put my money into lighting. Way more important for leveling up your videography.
Thanks for this topic Tom! I’ve had the zv-1 and then the zv-e10 later on. I still am in love with both. The zv-1 I use for zoom/livestreams and the zv-e10 if I need another angle during zooms or livestream but I bring it with me everywhere for photography and some videos. 🩵
So we WON this camera at B&H at your talk lol dude, I gave up on this cam because I hated the interface! we are selling, getting a new canon lens. I think if I try Sony, I need the real thing, like an fx3 or something. (But that canon c80 is looking tempting lol)
Gaaaahh!!! I did not know about the "Auto Power OFF Temp." setting! Thank you!!! That is my number one hugest complaint about the ZV-E10: Temperature. (95% of the unprintable words on my audio recorder are presaged by the auto-power-off double-beep from the camera.)
I’ve had a zve10 with the. Sigma 16mm for a coulle of years now. I do get overheating issues with it in my studio. I have a room fan on the lowest setting pointing at it and this has solved the problem when on long conference calls, the camera hdmi oupit would otherwise turn off. Messed with all the settings and its always been an issue. The 10bit colour of the mk2 is interesting for sure! I wish Sony made an affordable webcam esk camera like this but paired down and simplified without the recording or photo features, just hdmi out. Its consider a blackmagic camera but autofocus is required when working with such small focus deapths.
Absolutely they are the best for studio production with OBS via HDMI 4K as a 4K sensor. I got two and the cost is right. I am using everything in manual and with 7Artisans Cine Vision Lenses. Beyond perfect. I got dummy batteries, and micro HDMI to full HDMI fixed adapter. It can go on 24/7 without any issues. The color is perfect in real time. You just need to know how to fine-tune everything. My video production quality has risen in order of magnitude with the Shure MV7X XLR and my Zoom F3 Field Recorder and the Viltrox DC-X2 camera monitor. I have never used the internal memory, don't need one.
@thomassteibl1233 absolutely not. Never over heated. I am using them via HDMI and with a dummy battery. Never overheard. I have two and they are perfect in the use case with HDMI. Via usb they work a lot more. And when they are recording locally they are working much more but I have recorded for 4h in a row and didn't overheat.
Love your videos Tom! you made me bite the bullet, I justified this from a “its the equivalent of buying a nice suit for work”. Do you have any idea how to deal with the video delay when plugged as a webcam for zoom, and all the other meetings? it throws me off! Probably the audio will be out of sync as well as it goes through my zoom p4 interface 😢
Awesome review, Tom. I don’t really know much about cameras, I’m more of an audio guy, but this helped so much! Thank you, sincerely! :D Oh! And one quick question, are you gonna make a video about Shure’s MV6? I could use some help figuring out if the MV7 is better than the MV6. And if your not gonna make a video about it, that’s perfectly fine! I completely understand if you can’t/don’t want to. Have an amazing day, Tom! :D ❤️✝️
Thanks for the kind words! I'm really interested in the MV6, but haven't had the chance to try or buy one yet. The biggest different between it and the MV7 is the lack of XLR connectivity. If you only ever plan to use is via USB, then it's fantastic. If you think you'll ever get an XLR mixer/interface, then the MV7 will be a bit more versatile. 👍
Do you know if there are any newer models coming down the line. I have the old Z1 and never got the ZVE10. Dont want to buy now if something else coming down the line soon
Hey Tom, any tips on filming vlogs in the car? My zv-e10 likes to keep whatever is outside very well lit and detailed and then myself and the interior of my car super dark. Any tips would help, thanks!
Yeah, that type of dynamic range can be tricky! The simplest thing is to adjust the exposure for you and not the outside, but that will cause the bright part out the windows to look blown out a bit. No real way around it without evening out the brightness of inside vs. outside if you want EVERYTHING to be exposed nicely.
@@tombuck Thanks! I'll have to figure out the exposure, because that's kind of what I'm looking for, to have the windows blown out and me in good lighting.
The a7III is great but definitely a bit long in the tooth, especially compared to the FX3 which has better bitrates, color depth, autofocus, audio, battery life, stabilization, no overheating, etc. (But an a7III in good shape at a good price is still awesome)
Especially now with second hand prices being super low it's very compelling. I made the mistake of buying a Fuji (X-T3), while the video quality is phenomenal, even better than the ZV-E10 (10bit 60fps), it's unfortunately let down with the unreliable autofocus and a record limit, making it unusable.
I tried voice searching your name so I could rewatch an old video of yours and my phone thought I said Tim instead of Tom. Which made me think, if you ever start a second channel it could be called Tom Buck 2 instead of Timbuktu. (Ya know, since you're a fan of word play like that!)
@@tombuck hahaha too funny!Blindly subscribing! Love your content man! Plus I went down a Timbuktu rabbit hole earlier too, so now I have that knowledge for something! Great stuff!
LoL Those air quotes at the beginning of this episode is what did it for me. I'm still laughing 😅 No, I didn't sell my DSLRs. I worked so hard to afford them, and didn't have the heart to just let it go for pennies on the dollar... 😢 Nikon D3x Nikon D810 Were years of hard work. I'm going to be buried with those two. 😅 Yeah, I don't care about my Canon cameras, not even about the Panasonic and Sony ones that I have... 😂😂😂 But, yeah, funny and sad.. C'est la vie..
Yep, I'm the same when it comes to keeping cameras. I could sell my older cameras for a couple hundred dollars maybe? Or I could keep them, find fun ways to use them, and have all the good memories too. I'd hate not to have the camera that filmed our wedding!
@@tombuck It's the memories attached with objects that khills me. 😞 I have a cluttered house. But, in a way, it's a good thing. A month before my dad died in August, he asked me about all the watches he's ever gifted me on my birthday. I just smiled and showed him the briefcase that holds them. For context, we were poor while growing up, he would gift me a cheap watch, or the one that he was wearing. Not that we're super rich now, but, now, I don't have to worry about bills, 24/7. He knew that I am going through a bit of a hardship. He was told that I had sold everything that was of value. When he saw that I still have everything that he'd ever given me, including the t-shirts and other promotional crap from the 7/11 he used to run... he just smiled and walked away. We were never that close. I just respected him enough. Same way, like your wedding cameras, I cannot sell or throw away anything that has made me, me. LoL still have my Hanimex 110, that my Mom bought for me, back in 1980s... I have more pictures of Swansea, than the Mayor of that town back then. Long stories short, yep, I get you.
There's a clear difference is aspect ratio, if that's the correct phrase, between the FX-3 and the EV-10 that you're showing on the video. I mean your head is taller and narrower with the FX-3 and shorter and wider with the EV-10. Is that a cropping issue? EDIT: the EV-10 aspect ratio seems to match that of the A7S3 that you show.
Aspect ratio is the size of the video frame, so this sounds more like you’re describing the appearance of lens compression. Even at roughly equal focal lengths, there are still differences between full frame and crop sensors, so it makes sense that the crop ZV-E10 might look a little more similar to the a7SIII with a tighter lens on it. It’s so interesting how all that stuff works!
I have an urgent problem *raising flag on tree house*. I bought the Sennheiser MD 46, Xvive U3 dynamic mic wireless system, Rode 3.5mm TRRS to TRS adapter, and a IK Multimedia iRig Pre 2 mic preamp (should I have?). Do I need a preamp for the MD 46 dynamic mic? Will using the 48V phantom power preamp damage the mic? 😰The preamp manual says "not to turn the phantom power ON with passive ribbon microphones"
I have to respectfully disagree with the 4k prospective on this camera. The rolling shutter in 4k is simply unusable. This camera's best use case is in 1080. I would recommend the markii version or a different camera entirely.
But for talking head setups like I highlight here, rolling shutter isn't an issue since the camera isn't moving. If you're capturing a lot of sports or activity though, then it would be way more noticeable.
I'm not trying to be controversial in what I'm about to say - I own a A6600 and a ZV-E10 mk1, along with the kit lens, Sigma 16mm and Viltrox 23mm lenses. BUUUT I personally think that the ZV-E10's image quality is clearly lacking when it comes to faces/skin. Faces always look a bit soft (IQ-wise) and over-processed. That's naturally with the "soft skin" feature disabled - otherwise the situation is even worse. Yes I know that you can't expect the ZV-E10 to look the same as an FX3, but my ZV-E10's image quality looks worse than my A6600 too - even though both are the same on paper (same sensor size, same bitrate and same 'X' processor). I actually don't see the point of putting my Sigma or Viltrox F/1.4 lenses on my ZV-E10, because the kit lens often gets a similar result when it comes to talking head videos. Maybe that's just me. As I say, I'm not trying to bait anyway - I own the ZV-E10 mk1 after all. I just don't think that it looks that good... it's a bit too overprocessed and "smartphone like" for talking heads, IMO.
One thing that no one mentions about this camera is how noisy the zoom is 😯 Its horrendous, Also I was not very impressed with the video quality either. I know I was using the kit lens but MANY reviews said it was a decent lens. I have a DJI Osmo Pocket 3 that runs rings around this and even my DJI action camera has way better image quality. This is going back for a refund
The zoom is a function of the lens and not the camera. As I say in the video, the kit lens IS decent, but it's definitely not the best lens out there. It's a good one to get started and learn more with though! But at the end of the day, if something isn't a good fit for you, then it's definitely worth returning and getting something that is.
omg. 🥲 I was looking for a new body for my little Bluebird, This is the one of my options. He's still in his Sony projector camcorder body, Looking cute as always. 🥲📹

@@tombuck, you are right! The camera body of the E10 weighs only 100 grams more than a Facecam Pro. I love Elgato products but am so disappointed by the colors and reliability of the Facecam Pro. I keep thinking if I should also get an E10 instead.
Could you please make a video on universal audio standard dynamic-1 microphone
I haven't used that one yet!
Thanks for this video, i preferably go for sony a7c or a7c2 by spending just a little more. This is much superior, compact and is a full frame camera.
Great stuff, Tom. I use the ZV-E10 for client work all the time. They have no idea. (I toss a field monitor and matte box on it to fool them.)
It’s funny how far a matte box can go in making things look “legit” 😁
Oh that's true! The used market is probably great right now.
I'm so glad to hear this! I've been super impressed with it, but it's nice to have input from someone who's used it for way longer than me!
You mean to tell me I've been using a dummy battery adapter for no reason?😮
@@thestandardbarber1708 I also have a dummy battery for my home setup but a power bank on the road is gold!
Haha, I'm happy to be your personal content creator 😅
For the RCV, the cameras themselves can stay in 4K, so it's only the HDMI output settings you might need to change.
It’s an awesome top down camera that matches my a7siii very well
Yeah the Mark II kicks butt! Definitely a lot of quality of life upgrades and a good companion to the “bigger” cameras.
Sorry to hear about your RX10! Glad you got a great kit to replace it though!
Yeah, all your stuff looks awesome! 100% true about lighting too- often overlooked and under appreciated.
@@tombuckthank you sir! Hearing that from you means ALOT!!!
@@levelupwithmikenewman Hi! Does it overheat while recording more than 1-2 hits straight?
@@FATBS it doesn’t overheat with the ulanzi fan on it, but it will over heat in about an hour when in a room above room temperature.

Excellent video again.

That's a perfect combo! I have the ZV-1F and I use it as an overhead camera all the time. I love it!
So we WON this camera at B&H at your talk lol dude, I gave up on this cam because I hated the interface! we are selling, getting a new canon lens. I think if I try Sony, I need the real thing, like an fx3 or something. (But that canon c80 is looking tempting lol)
The best !!! Always learning from you my friend!🔥
I appreciate that!
I’m likely to get one of these one day. It’s been a while since my camera was that new -back to the original Canon 7D days.
The original 7D was a dream camera for me at the time!
Thanks for this.. Your video quality always looks so crisp and clear. What do you use for lighting?
Thank you! I cover some of the lighting at 4:15 of this video: ruclips.net/video/W-I2twhalgI/видео.html
Gaaaahh!!! I did not know about the "Auto Power OFF Temp." setting! Thank you!!! That is my number one hugest complaint about the ZV-E10: Temperature.
(95% of the unprintable words on my audio recorder are presaged by the auto-power-off double-beep from the camera.)
Oh I get it! Haha, I hope this helps!
I have never used the internal memory, don't need one.
are you using a fan to keep them cool and going over longer periods of time? 8hours +
Great video! Does the ZV-E10 and Sigma 16MM work with the ElGato Teleprompter?
Yes! The Sigma lens is great because the end doesn't move to focus, so the prompter can be mounted on it.
Awesome review, Tom. I don’t really know much about cameras, I’m more of an audio guy, but this helped so much! Thank you, sincerely! :D
Oh!
@@tombuck Thanks so much, Tom! I’ll note down what you said and keep researching! Thanks again! :D ❤️
Do you know if there are any newer models coming down the line. I have the old Z1 and never got the ZVE10. Dont want to buy now if something else coming down the line soon
The Mark II came out just a few months ago, so I don't think there will be any other updates for at least a couple of years.
I’m curious how the FX compares to the alpha a7 III because it is a full frame also. But significantly less than the Fx.
The a7III is great but definitely a bit long in the tooth, especially compared to the FX3 which has better bitrates, color depth, autofocus, audio, battery life, stabilization, no overheating, etc.
(But an a7III in good shape at a good price is still awesome)
IDK.. the quality difference from the FX3 seemed a bit more substantial then stated..

No, I didn't sell my DSLRs.
I worked so hard to afford them, and didn't have the heart to just let it go for pennies on the dollar... 😢

But, yeah, funny and sad..
I have a cluttered house.

Man, that a6700 is so nice!
Hah, like on cue - I just wanted to hear more about it from you :)
It's a great little camera for sure! I'm definitely impressed.
@@tombuck Thank you!
I see no difference between the fx3 and zve 10
And photography tbh.
The MD46 is a dynamic mic but not a ribbon mic, so phantom power won’t hurt it (it just won’t really do anything). It’s a GREAT mic though!!
can you live stream for 8 hours with this camera without overheating ?
I have to respectfully disagree with the 4k prospective on this camera. The rolling shutter in 4k is simply unusable. This camera's best use case is in 1080. I would recommend the markii version or a different camera entirely.
But for talking head setups like I highlight here, rolling shutter isn't an issue since the camera isn't moving. If you're capturing a lot of sports or activity though, then it would be way more noticeable.
@@tombuck good point .
Are you anti DJI osmo pocket 3
I really want one! But it’s a very different camera from this.
@@tombuck indeed. The p3 is more in my budget. Works fine. Convenient, discreet, practical. When you get one I’ll watch for your review
@@tombuck Yeah I agree. I had a Sony RX100 MK3 before I got this one and that was in a different league for the image quality alone
