They all risk being irrelevant. Patek's brand is "ostentatious wealth" to most people (their royal oak competitor is far more expensive and hard to get, for example). But that brand is becoming less and less important to the new generation of wealthy elites. Tech billionaires who pay thousands of dollars for Brunello Cucinelli clothes are not into flaunting their wealth on watches like that
Rolex right now is risking losing a whole younger generation because these people finally "make it", go to a watch store to buy a Rolex and then realize people wait like little simps for months to get one and walk out thinking "Who wears a watch anyways"

There's an area of luxury that has become cartoonish. While some can afford it and will drive it, creating hype, propagated by sheep following sheep on social media - that's all it is, there's limited, intrinsic value. Even if this particular watch has horological value by movement design, it's like a crayon version of the Mona Lisa.
The typeface / font "Comic Sans" is a totally reliable indicator that the person using it is a complete tool and anything written using it can be safely ignored without a second glance. I cannot tell the difference between "Comic Sans" and the "hand-written" numerals on this watch...
Don't get me wrong, I hate the idea of this collab too, but I disagree with brown not being good on a watch lol. Like with all accessories, they can be great in any color. It's all about picking a color that matches your personal style. Besides, the brown color and the custom font is the only thing this watch has going for it. Are you suggesting they should have just made it in steel/white gold/yellow gold like all the other shit they make? It's already bad enough that AP has only been making Royal Oaks lately at least they kinda tried to be creative with this collab in terms of design. Just a shame it's all related to a scumbag
@@tomp3790 Okay, fair enough. So the only real problem is that you'd have to either wear this watch every day, or go to the trouble of manually resetting the week counter every time you wanted to wear it.
Y’all hate this but loved the marvel stuff? Like cmon. Y’all won’t own the 200 pieces. Y’all would of been complaining when lebron got his limited edition lmao
AP is no Patek or Rolex and it’s an insult to those brands for AP to be grouped in the holy trinity with them. I own Patek’s Rolex, Cartier, breitling and Hublot. AP will never be in my collection. The AP boutiques are staffed with 20 something’s telling you you need to kiss there ass and maybe then they’ll sell you a watch. They are a 1 trick pony with a watch they pimp out and didn’t even create themselves. As for selling above retail. Give it time. AP has taken a tremendous hit in the secondary market way more than Rolex or Patek.
Just a guess - The more you associate your brand with New Money, the more Not-New Money will say "Hard Pass". EDIT - And upon a quick google, Travis Scott is quite a not admirable character to be associating your brand with.
I'm not really into AP, I think they're overpriced, and I find the look a bit boring, like you've seen it a million times. I feel like people that buy AP's are not as much watch enthusiasts, they're just going for the grail while never exploring what other brands are offering, the people that buy them, often have 6-10 in their collection, and it just doesn't make sense when there's so many nice watches out there.
From a design perspective, the Royal Oak is one of my all time favorite watches. I’ve probably watched the Hodinkee Reference Points video for the watch a couple dozen times. The industrial look of a steel example has an understated element that I really appreciate. But, AP’s marketing strategy over the last decade along with hype pieces, like the Travis Scott collaboration and the Marvel watches, have turned AP into a brand for people who are desperate for the attention of others. I really question whether I would ever buy a Royal Oak because it has turned into a symbol of flash, rather than elegance
Audemars Piguet went from doing amazing collabs such as AP x Michael Schumacher etc... To this... Great video. Nailed it in every aspect! I hope they see this.
Most ranting commentators will never ever even be able to consider buying an AP CJ. Including myself 😂. That said: me thinks the brown ceramic us really cool.
AP, finally showing their true colours. over-rated, over-priced and gimmicky one trick pony. This, together with that Spiderman watch 🤦... They've just demoted themselves from the Holy Trinity.
I don't like it, but I get it. The watch itself doesn't exist for the multitudes of Travis Scott fans to buy and wear, it exists for them to covet and to make AP the ultimate aspirational flex watch for a generation. That's why there are only 200 of them and why they cost more than a G Wagen. It makes Rolex look stiff and old-fashioned (which, I guess is their brand anyway) and AP look relevant and connected to culture. There are easily 200 fellow celebs, princes, and trust-fund nepobabies who want to project obscene wealth while simultaneously signaling their connection to hip-hop culture, so I get that this makes sense on all fronts. After all, the typical AP customer will be, frankly, dead in 20 years and so will the brand if they only cater to really old men on yachts. Like the Marvel watches, it puts something unobtainable yet cool (if only to a teenager) in front of a young, culturally relevant audience and says, "you can't have this...yet." All of that said, none of it excuses the CEO's clownish behavior and cringy attempts to look hip with the kids. Those clips are embarrassing to all involved.
AP trying to go to the Hublot/Richard Mille route it seems. Will it fall off as part of the "holy trinity", and if that's the case, which brand would that be?
I bet Travis has never spent a rainy Sunday wandering around a branch of Millets trying on fleeces by Peter Storm, maybe if he had he wouldn't be in such turmoil.
Please, Audemars replace trend with some class . Gerald Genta will turn in his grave with all this marketing games . Bring back the essence of haut horlogerie

I like this wayy more than the Spiderman! This is just a themed Collab. Spiderman/ black panther are way too literal for me.
You didn’t even mention the fact that it’s brown… brown is a great colour.. for skin, seared steak etc… not a freaking watch
Imagine associating your brand with Travis Scott 😅 Disgusting.
I really like the week counter tbh. I would actually use that.
Are there any other watches that have this function?
I'm curious, what on earth is the point of a week counter? 🤔
@@alexolife
to know what calendar week it is 😃.
In my field of work we usually communicate in weeks for project planning.
Tasteless, ultimately resulting in devaluation, hard no.
I like the new font on the watch. That's about the best thing I can say about it.
I‘m glad I sold an AP ROO in 2021 at their peak and would never buy another AP again.
Ryan Gosling will look at the comic sans font and think "Not again!"
The guy sounds like someone who should be behind bars, not making watch deals.
How do I get an after market band
I'd be willing to wager H. Moser or Breguet.
AP is the originator is celebrity endorsements. What are yall even talking about?
@@Musa-ut6ce Rolex, TAG Heuer and Hublot were.
Did AP forget what happened at Astroworld w Travis Scott? Bunch of people died since he was inciting violence. Hard pass on this watch sir
this watch is directed at a crowd that rents lambos and pops bottles at the club every weekends only to go home alone to their section 8 roach shack
I really like the watch. I couldn't care less about Travis Scott.
Big no for me. Thank you for that material Andrew!
I like the font. But why is it kaka brown?
I thought that was an Invicta Collab at first glance. I will wait for the special price on QVC
*ITS MY JOB AS A GEN X 54 YEAR OLD* to f-king hate it with a passion - but thats kinda the point isnt it...???
I no longer collect watches, I buy gold coins with my money now. I'm sure others buy stocks, or houses, or pay into their pension. For the vast majority expensive watches are a thing you buy in your 20's, 30's, maybe 40's but by the time you get to 50... Maybe not so much.
When I heard the name "Travis Scott" I thought it was some country singer. That's what the name sounds like.
Imagine my consternation.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤔
😵💫😢
Who is Travis Scott… oh wait, that is not an ambassador I care about?… kids
Can we knock off AP of the trinity and put JLC on it already?
Ahh… there come the monkey out of the sleeve… investment opportunity. Yes AP makes watches as investments opportunities. That is the way to survive an other century.. o wait… it’s not. Watches are jewelry and jewelry is to be worn. Who will wear a marvel? That person is really in touch with his very childish inner child.
Against the association, it may well bite AP in the bum, I can appreciate the incredible movement design and finishing of the top brands but I have not seen a JC Biver design that I like, not that I could afford one! As far as I am concerned “The King is in the altogether”. Excellent content, thanks
If it was the real mick foley cactus jack, it may actually be interesting
Virgil would been the best collab ☝🏽 RIP
Your review is spot on. This is an ill-conceived collaboration.
Why??
@@Steve-zc5jo Did you watch the video? He's an immoral and violent thug. That's why.
“Cast it into the fire! Isildur, DESTROY IT!”
I am sure that the watch will look fantastic at his next booking photo at the clink. Just a lovely role model for our urban youth to raise themselves up from the thug life. Just another reason why I hate AP.
Yes and last year they ran a competition through Wristcheck: “design your own AP Royal Oak. Not sure where all those ideas ended up. Some of them would have been more interesting than all these “funky” ones.
I’ll always remember where I was when I learned AP jumped the shark 🦈 and fell into oblivion
Against - soon as you mentioned that 9yr old being killed at one of his concerts and how this guy seems to act. I think it’s a bad choice of collaboration. No doubt all 200 pieces will sell but I think resale in 10years time won’t be so kind!
