How times have changed in 1999 I bought my first AP a Chronograph, 39mm dark gray dial, it's on my wrist now. I bought the AP from a prominent certified AP dealer in Greenwich Conn. I got a 30% discount at the time and yes it was a new watch. When AP and so many other watch brands starting opening their own boutiques they lost their dealership. The same thing happened to my Rolex dealer in NJ after she had spent $400,000.00 to modify her store to Rolex's specifications, these companies are ruthless to the point I simply don't buy anything.

However I do disagree with AP (Rolex, Vacheron, Patek) policy that is full of shit, as they do not do any vetting as if they were do that there would be no more flippers, just passionate buyers that “meet” the brands image, but my educated guess is that dealers are hand and hand with their friends /family/ grey market who they allocate the watches and they split the profit. Their policy simply adds a middle men and creates/maintains this hype and is a buyers are being incredibly stupid to fall for it (I already purchased overpriced watches from grey market :) )

There are two problems with the APRO: 1. It is almost too iconic, and as a result most of the ones you see around are counterfeit. This takes away from aspirability, ownership status or watch snobbery that watch people enjoy. It is very common in any place where legitimately wealthy people or poseurs gather.
    2. The watch is so popular that it will eventually go out of fashion, which will kill resale values and deeply wound the AP brand (which is too reliant on one model line).
15-20 years ago, wearing an APRO was pretty cool, especially the non Offshore versions. Now, it almost feels gauche. It’s not a watch that commands as much respect among watch people anymore. Any overly tattooed Instagram clown or his Russian girlfriend wears one now (real or fake).

I had an hour long conversation with the manager at the New York boutique back in March. It was quite interesting. There is a tiered allocation system that basically amounts to pay-to-play. New clients cannot be allocated a Royal Oak in blue or green, or any watch in blue or green, period. New clients don’t get Royal Oaks, unless they gray dials. New clients have to buy of code 11s, offshores, or ladies pieces before any consideration will be given on a royal oak. Want something in precious metal? Tough. We are “a steel company.” The manager of the flagship North boutique has no insight or visibility into her own inventory at any given time. you are assigned a sales associate whose job it is to advocate to sell you a watch to the manager on your behalf. The sales associate has thousands of interested clients. How do you suppose he or she remembers you among the thousands of clients he has? Big laughable waste of time. Buy gray.

Every time I asked about a RO I was steered to a Code or an Offshore and told a Royal Oak would be “very difficult” as a first purchase. If you hear those words, BTW, walk away because they mean you’re never getting one. I finally asked to speak with the person in charge of allocating pieces, in this case, Natalie. I have no reason to make this up. I had very similar experiences with Chicago, Dallas, Las Vegas.

Great video. Just had my first appointment 2 weeks ago. My rep has been going back and forth with me on Text a bit so I have no idea if I’m someone they would consider selling a watch to, either way I’d expect it to take it a years. I’ve heard about this 4 times thing online. I’ve gone in 2x. I was able to stop in the first time and then set up an actual formal appointment for my 2nd time. Both times the rep Ive been dealing with has been really lovely. Definitely was an in depth conversation both times. During my 1st visit we just talked watches for 45 mins. My 2nd visit we really talked about the brand and what I was interested in. My preference is the 37mm date or the 38mm Chrono. Both I imagine will be almost impossible to get.

Pulled the trigger on that and got offered an offshore 6 months later which I also picked up, then a full ceramic RO. Granted I had purchased a steel RO grey market first and showed my passion through keeping in touch with the SAs and being knowledgeable and polite. Have been invited to some events since then, golf etc. and met some great friends through the AP network. It's to give the customer a false sense of value and to flip the supply/demand, very clever but don't be fooled. Ultimately if you want one at retail you have to jump through their hoops but don't think you're special when they take your money from you, ha.

It is hard enough for me to visit the AP house when I need to send my watch in for service. I lose my patience after waiting for the person in a lab coat to do the pre-service check. I will not buy from them again. I can buy my own champagne. I posit that only flippers are incentivized enough to go through this buying process. Wealthy end users do not have time for this.
