I am a 58 year old woman. Had a TKR this past March 2024. 5 months today. Doing really good. Physical Therapy was just "Amazing"!! I'm back to doing my housework, vacuum cleaning, washing floors & etc. I actually go in the yard & play catch with my German Shepherd. I will be honest it was rough but, I make time everyday to exercise my knee. Walking as I'm doing my housework or even go grocery shopping does help immensely. My stiffness isn't as much as it was in the beginning. My surgeon has said the stiffness will become less & less. "Positive, Mental Attitude" is my own destiny to get through this entire process!! 😊😊 Thank you 4 sharing your video Michelle from Illinois 😊😊

@carlasmith1579 I'm extremely active as well. You need to give your body a chance to heal. Do all your Physical Therapy. It does help a great deal. Honestly, at first it's hard but, keep with it & it does get easier.. stay "Positive"!! I'm 8 months postoperative now. I'm doing everything I did before at this point. I do take mini breaks. My stiffness I experienced, is just about diminished. Take time out throughout your day & exercise your knee!! Always, listen to your body. Good Luck with your upcoming surgery!! I wish you the very best!!

I am a 71 old lady and had a partial knee replacement 7 weeks ago. The physio is very pleased with my progress and I can bend and straighten the leg well, but I have to admit it is still very sore especially if I have been sitting for a while it is hard to put my weight on it, and still need pain killers. The knee is not terribly swollen anymore. Just sore. Is that normal? I do all the exercises I am supposed to do, but last week I walked 2 km and it got really really sore.
I’m 66 and have had a total ankle replacement and both shoulders replaced all with 20 months. Lessons learnt: 1) don’t come off pain killers too soon, you will regret it (sorry about the constipation) 2) Work at your recovery every day and then continue in the gym building muscle on what you’ve had done 3) Be confident, live your life- it’s what you had it done for! I’m a 75 year old man and had a partial right knee operation in January this year 2024. I was told by a knee specialist that I couldn’t do it any harm in exercise. In my mind you cannot walk or bend your knee enough, My knee feels fantastic and l can bend it easily plus kneel on it now almost as normal. You will get trouble if you don’t exercise your knee enough in the early days.

Not quite 3 months after LTKR . Just finished my physical therapy after 6 weeks. Knee feels great! The secret to success is to do those exercises at home! Do those stretches! It's so important! I'll have the right one done soon and I'm going back to the same PT.
Congratulations! I’m happy to hear you’ve had a great experience and your recovery is going well! Thanks for taking the time to watch this one! Wishing you the best
I’m at nine weeks postop partial knee replacement on August 20, 2024 and this has been horrible! I’m only up to 100° bend and I can’t seem to get past it. My knee swells up every day and I try not to do too much but you’ll have to live your life.
@ImThePronounPolice I used ice packs for the swelling. I found that if I stayed off of the knee, it became stiff and painful. I exercised every morning before starting my day and every afternoon. If I watched TV, I kept bending my knee. Everyone's recovery is different. I pray you'll recover quickly.
Superb! Thank you. I'm just 10 days after TKR surgery. In convalescent care. I'm walking slowly, mindfully, about 15 minutes daily indoors and 5 minutes outdoors . This advice is very helpful.❤❤🎉🎉
I’ve listen to so many videos and hear different things. Since my surgeon know my condition the most, I’ll have to listen to his directions but this is a good video. 😊
I’m 58 female and had TKR in my right knee in May. I’m doing very well with that but what I found with walking and physical therapy was that my “old” left knee was really hurting. I’m bone on bone , no ACL with the left. So it was kind of a double edged sword for me to recover and walk… strengthening exercises were the same way. Did the best I could and when I get the left done next year hopefully I can walk more. It was almost like I felt the pain was more in the old knee and that’s the one that needed the ice when I was done.
This is good to know. I am scheduled to have TKR on my left knee next month and am worried about how my right knee will handle it....I have known for years that my right knee would have to be replaced, so being told my left knee needed to be done first was a surprise since I always considered it my "good" knee.
I had total knee replacement 2 years ago. Still can't walk without my walker and am still doing a few knee exercises every day. Sometimes wish I hadn't bothered.

Great video, Dr. Mike! I’m almost 5 weeks post-op and have no problem walking 30-40 minutes (about 1-1.5 miles at a slow pace). Pre-TKA I was cycling 60-80 miles a week, so pre-op fitness was very good. PT 3x a week and continuing recommended exercises at home on off days. Getting back in the saddle ASAP is my goal, but I’m not overdoing it. Keep working, folks!!
Thanks for taking the time to watch this one! Sounds like you’re doing a fantastic job! Congratulations on your procedure and wishing you a fast recovery! Thanks for sharing your experience with us all! It means a lot!
This was a good video as I have loved walking for health/fitness for 50 yrs now 72, best exercise all over benefits, so was very interested with all you discussed. Had TKR left knee 3 1/2 mths ago. Certainly do have to pace yourself. Go out everyday walking with my 🐶 on pavers & grassed areas had to cut time down from 1 hr to 40 mins. as suffered too much knee pain. Come home elevate resting not using ice as much but massage knee area by hand. Found good idea to break time up going 2 walks a day. Still feel bit of pain if try walk too fast but not too bad. Still doing P/T & will keep that up for maybe 3 more months. Went Hydrotherapy for approx. 2 months advise all to go it was heaven & believe helped with ROM. Not giving up 😅 want to be independent walk forever love to do marathon walks. Thanks Dr. Mike.
Thank so much for taking the time to watch and for your kind comments! It does help support and grow my channel and I can’t thank you enough!
Had my total knee replacement last Friday, 4 days ago. The pain level just putting my foot on the floor is total pain. I'm I doing something wrong. I have a CPM machine. I'm at 60 now, and increase it every day by 15. Tomorrow it will be 75.
Thanks for taking the time to watch here! I appreciate your support from the UK 🇬🇧! Congratulations on your recent surgery and hope your recovery is smooth!
I've 5 weeks post surgery and am walking but having to still using crutches. I'm 68 yrs old and for 2 years had pain and had to use one crutch all the time
@@MovewithDrMike just had a total knee Sept 6th, doc had a waterproof negative pressure bandage over the incision and I showered 3 days after surgery but every doc is different.
I had my TKR 2.5 years ago and I took my recovery seriously and put a plan into action 5 months before surgery. This surgery was brutal. Totally brutal. And each day brought new challenges, new milestones and my ability to reduce stress, pain, swelling. I hurt, but I was so happy I followed my surgeons advice, knowledge, and wisdom. I took prehab 5 months before my surgery and glad I did. My physical therapy AFTER surgery was 3 !! Once on the phone, once on zoom and once in person. He gave me the exercises, I did them , I demonstrated that I was doing them correctly, controlled my pain and swelling and that’s it. He told me that I didn’t need to come as I knew what I was doing, plus I was dedicated to doing the exercises daily, which made the difference. Everyone is different, we have different ways of dealing with our challenges and we all hope for good results.
I had my surgery at 4 pm and had my shower the next day. My knee was bandaged heavily but the nurse covered it with wide plastic to protect it from getting wet. I was easily transported frm bed to toilet with a shower wheel chair (not sure its exact name). So, showering was good with nurses assistance.😊
Which surgical cut to open the knee for tkr is best for the patient? I have the choice of a straight cut down the front over the knee or a cut that goes around the knee (right leg) , as pictured in your you tube intro picture. Are there pros and cons to each?
Thank you for watching and for taking the time to comment! And given my experience most of the surgeons say it takes up to a year to fully recover and sometimes it’s even sooner! Hope that helps!
I had TKR in May 2022. I felt total recovery after 1 year. It has been 2 years now. Am feeling so blessed that it recovered so well now. Only minor scars can be seen. I thank to my wonderful surgeon, Dr Michael Soon who did a good job. After 1 year x-ray results was excellent. I am now scheduled for once in 2 years x-ray checks. It will be yearly after 10 years.
I had knee replacement in both knees this year one in January and the second one in May first one has went well also the second one went well until I started walking but the puzzling thing is I am getting pain now in my first op and I am having to use a walking stick to get around
Thanks for watching and for taking the time to comment! And congratulations on both of your procedures! What I’ve observed with my patients is that every knee is so different. Most will have more difficulty with one knee whether that is observed right after the surgery or later down the road as in your case. Stick to your normal rehab routine and continue to emphasize flexibility and strength! Wishing you the best hope that helps!
Thank you for the information. I had surgery on the left knee total replacement 6/19/24 I’m at 98% range of motion I also go to therapy 3x week, my surgeon is not happy with my bending so he’s giving me one more month of therapy but he’s talking about manipulating the knee and I’m really scared of that, should I have the manipulation done? Thank you
Thank you for watching and I’m glad you found this video helpful! I would say if you have 98% range of motion then you’ll really have to decide whether your current mobility will limit you in the activities you want to participate in daily. For most people 98% is ENOUGH to keep them active and mobile without feel restricted. Ultimately it has to be a decision you make and that you’re comfortable with. Hope that helps a little
Thanks for watching and for taking the time to comment! This is a great question and I think I will make an in depth video about this topic in the near future since many people are asking the same questions. When it comes to rehab I would say that the best way to recover back to 100% is to focus on your rehab for at least 12-16 weeks. Everyone is a bit different since some people might need to focus on more flexibility and others need more strengthening. Regardless after the 16 week mark there should be a progression with more advanced exercises. You may not be performing them everyday like you were right after surgery but you will want to continue on for the rest of your life with at least 2x per week for health and to maintain strength in your legs for longevity. Simply stopping everything would be a bad idea and you will likely lose a lot of the strength you gained. Hope that helps!
Ok. Doctor, 🙏Thank u for your long reply. Waiting for your video about this. . Doing the same rehab excercises like towel pressing under knee, leg raising,, bending, straightening etc is sufficient?
WORST surgery ever and I’ve had many surgeries. Rather die than do the other knee. FOUR years of pain. Chronic insomnia. Ten months into PT I fell and broke the leg. This is COMMON people , but docs don’t tell you. WHAT pain meds? I got three days worth. They think everyone is an addict. I’m 75 for heaven’s sake. I suffered so badly I have PTSD from it
Hello . I went back to work after 6 months and it's been a total of 9months since TKR I've been feeling inner upper thigh pain. Is this s sign of hip replacement??
i’m 6 and 1/2 weeks po and had both knees replaced and i’m feel like i super tight skin on my knees what can i do about it i feel like it’s making my pt isn’t helping or im not bending like i should be help please
Thanks for stopping by to watch this one and for taking the time to comment! Stiffness after this type of procedure is very normal and daily stretching is going to be key to get rid of this for the long term. The correlation between how much you walked before vs after surgery is BS. I was walking 5/6 miles a day and after surgery am struggling with walking around the block 4 MONTHS OUT!
I’m 3 weeks out and doing pretty well, but now I’m feeling some clucking in my knee, is that normal? Started therapy 2 days after surgery and the therapist was really bending and manipulating my knee. In my opinion too much. Had me crying. I’m know measuring 94 degrees and I’m really trying not trying not to use any more narcotics for the pain.
Thank you for the video! I’m a 55 yo male in pretty good shape and very active (exercise 3-4x per week). I’ll be having TKR in less than 2 months. After watching several videos on the TKR experience and reading the comments section, I am terrified! Looks like I’m in for some serious pain post op. I’ve had the same knee scoped 4 times and had surgery for a torn Labrum (SLAP tear), so I’m no stranger to surgery pain but TKR pain is a whole different level from what I’ve learned. 😟 I’m hoping that my level of fitness will help speed up my total recovery time.
Thank you for watching and most of all for taking the time to comment here! I’m wishing you the best of luck in your upcoming procedure and I definitely know that your fitness level will help with your recovery! Everyone’s experience is so different from this procedure and and there are many variables that can affect your pain. Either way take it one day at a time and focus on what you CAN control! Wishing you the best and let me know if there are any other video topics you’d like for me to cover in the future!
Thanks for watching! I’m referring to either! This video will be applicable for anyone who uses any assistive devices or for anyone who is able to walk without a device. Hope that helps!!
I had tkr June 21, was doing really well, however I helped my husband with powerwashing our home ,1 week ago, my knee is hurting, my tp says I may have strained ligaments ,any idea how long to heel? this?
Thanks for watching and for taking the time to comment! Could be hard to tell given I don’t actually know how much activity you performed on the knee. I would say if it doesn’t feel better after 4-6 weeks you should definitely follow up with your surgeon! Most of the time my patients will have small set backs in the beginning of their recovery especially since they are trying to learn what their tolerance is to standing and walking on the new knee. But quickly they learn from their mistakes and they are back to normal in no time!
How soon I can start walking after my knee replacement on August 19th 😮and when can I go back to the gym I'm 66 yrs old but was going to the gym before my knee iusse.
Thanks for taking the time to watch here! Like I discuss in this video start off with small increments and you can begin that first week. It’s really important to monitor and listen to your body during this time. Returning to the gym might be closer to 4-6 months depending on how your recovery at home goes. Stay encouraged you got this!
I started back at gym after 2 months. Before that, I did my PT exercises every day and slowly started walking too. I think it depends on your fitness level. Good luck
@TommieToler-ib8jv thanks Tom hopefully on pushing for the same time frame 8 days I'm all ready walking tomorrow I Will try to do things with out the walker
Thanks for watching and for taking the time to comment! Pain after only 4.5 months post op is not abnormal and it takes practice to learn how to walk confidently again! @dakshinamurthykota9345 3000 steps is amazing! Great job! And thank you for watching and taking the time to comment! It can take up to 6-12 months for the quality of your gait to look normal again! Thanks for taking the time to watch and support the channel! This is something we often see people struggle with! One knee normally handles the procedure better than the other! Don’t be discouraged but focus on the same recovery! One day at a time! You can do this!!
Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment here! Absolutely! You can still build strength after knee replacement using weights! This is one of my favorite ways!
Thanks for watching and for taking the time to comment! I am a big fan of using a bike to help restore strength and range of motion in the knee after knee replacement! I explain this in my video here! Check this out! Absolute BEST Exercise for Knee Replacement Recovery (THIS WORKS!) ruclips.net/video/2C7COHxEXc4/видео.html
If only my DH would realize that trying to get back to "normal" isn't about walking and biking for hours....but he will not listen to anyone...so we'll see what happens. No one can tell him anything....going through that procedure should have been a wake up to listen to the experts...he'll keep going because he thinks it will help him get back to work faster.

Thanks for watching and for taking the time to comment! I’m glad to hear your range of motion is coming along very well! It’s not abnormal to hear clunking or popping noises since there is typically a lot of inflammation right after the surgery! If it’s something that persists past 6-8 weeks then I’d recommend following up with your surgeon so they can assess this further. Wishing you the best of luck and a smooth recovery!

@@ImThePronounPolice thanks for watching! Hang in there! Wishing you the best!
Thank you for taking the time to watch! I’m glad you found this video informative!! Wishing you the best!!
I’ve listen to so many videos and hear different things. Since my surgeon know my condition the most, I’ll have to listen to his directions but this is a good video. 😊
Thank you for watching! I really appreciate your support! Glad you enjoyed this one! ☝️
Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment here! Hope you’re doing well!
This is good to know. I am scheduled to have TKR on my left knee next month and am worried about how my right knee will handle it....I have known for years that my right knee would have to be replaced, so being told my left knee needed to be done first was a surprise since I always considered it my "good" knee.
😊@@pookybear7542

How many days after surgery I can take showers? Water is danger for injury please?
Thanks for taking the time to watch! Usually it’s about 6 weeks before the surgeons allow you to begin submerging your surgery leg in water.
Oh my...brutal. Yes, I heard & feel you. I've been there...😂
I had my surgery at 4 pm and had my shower the next day. My knee was bandaged heavily but the nurse covered it with wide plastic to protect it from getting wet. I was easily transported frm bed to toilet with a shower wheel chair (not sure its exact name). So, showering was good with nurses assistance.😊
Thank you for this video. It gave clarification to some of my experiences
Thanks for taking the time to watch this one! I’m so happy to hear it was helpful! Wishing you the best!
Which surgical cut to open the knee for tkr is best for the patient? I have the choice of a straight cut down the front over the knee or a cut that goes around the knee (right leg) , as pictured in your you tube intro picture. Are there pros and cons to each?
@MovewithDrMike
Is it true, it takes twenty-four months for overall healing after total or partial knee replacement surgery

Same here at 4 months

How can anyone walk 2 miles a day with a bad knee joint😮
Doctor,, after total knee placement other than walking ,how long one should do the excercises ? And how much time the numbness exist?
@@annapoornipb7977 yes for now it should by sufficient but over time you’ll want to make the exercises more challenging! Wishing you the best

WORST surgery ever and I’ve had many surgeries. Rather die than do the other knee. FOUR years of pain. Chronic insomnia. Ten months into PT I fell and broke the leg.
In my opinion too
much.
