- The Mossberg 590 Shockwave Shotgun in .410. It's small, lightweight and low recoil in .410 Bore, but it's a little awkward and handles differently than a tradition shotgun. So we check out the pros and cons. Thanks to Mossberg for their help. @MossbergCorp

I'm a regular viewer of your channel in the UK. Here you will be arrested in your own home for daring to protect your family and home. So how envious am I of being able to own legally a 410 shotgun. The police in the UK rarely will attend a burglary as it is occurring. They will definitely not be there to protect you in your own home. Love your channel keep up the great content God bless America & long live the Republic!! especially in these unpredictable times.
Hate to say it but videos of unarmed police trying to round up criminals in the UK is pretty funny but also sad. I feel bad for anyone not living in this country that doesn’t have freedom. Unfortunately our freedoms are gradually shrinking.
I grew up the UK, always jealous of Americans & their right to keep & bear arms. Thankfully I managed to move to the US a few years ago & get my US citizenship though, & I'm now a proud part of America's gun culture! 😎
I visited the UK a few years ago. It is one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever seen, and the majority of the people were extremely nice and friendly (except the guy on the bicycle who angrily called me a “wanker”). But a few of them asked me about gun ownership in the U.S. and were shocked that we could own as many as we could afford. There’s still crime in the UK, it’s not about the weapon of choice, it’s about the criminal. It’s such a wonderful place but I fear your politicians are well on their way to ruining it. Sad.
We would be happy to have more people like you here. Come on over!
@@PlagueDoctorL my wife lived in Cornwall for several years after college, which is a very nice area in a rugged sort of way, although I really liked the Cotswolds myself. She nearly had me talked into moving there, we even found prospective jobs, but I had family obligations in the States that stopped me. Sometimes I question that decision. The greatest thing about the UK is its history and how it’s been preserved, and during that history there’s been a lot of leaders who’ve led it down the wrong path. Yet the country still survives, wonderfully in so many ways, and I suspect it will continue to do so.
I got one for my Daughter who lives downtown in an Apartment. Stored in a hidden piece of furniture. She fills safe!
thats badass. great home defense firearm. I have a mossberg 500 cruiser blackwater edition. Easy to work firearms perfect for close in work with .410 Id imagine its soft to shoot, 00 Buck out of my pistol grip 500 cruiser gives my wrist a pounding
Check out pdx self defense in 410. I keep my judge loaded with this
You mention that the 500 has a single action bar. That is not the case anymore. I know this because I have an old Mossberg 500 with a single action bar that broke last year, and you can't find a fore end tube with a single action bar for love or money. Apparently they only built them with the single action bar for a year or two. Current 500s come with duel action bars and they have been like that for quite a while.
Nice to see someone showing off the 410 shockwave
Sootch, around 5 yrs ago you did a review on the Charles Daly Honcho 410. I was so impressed by your review that I went out and bought one. Love it!!
Bought one based on that review, too. I really like the spring-loaded , fore-end grip.
I have both and the 590 is made much better. The Charles Daly gave me a hard time running my own reloads. It’s also harder to mitigate recoil. I probably have close to 1000 rounds over four years with the Daly. Shockwave is a lot harder to get at a decent price, I got an a gun broker for 500 out the door including a transfer fee. I have to imagine it’s the same for the Daly. 590 for the win
People seem to forget that Firearms are Launching Systems. It’s the Ballistics of the Projectiles that matter. A .410 slug coming out of a Shockwave has better performance than the same slug coming out of a Taurus Judge. So I don’t think that it’s a Range Toy.
It's your opinion although you are correct by common sense anything out of a longer barrel whether pistol or long gun
On the discussion of 410 for self defense I did a quick gel test a few years ago and it's absolutely viable with the right ammo: ruclips.net/video/MOBzqul48Oo/видео.html
Add a brace to this and it'll be much more controllable for sure 🦅
I was immediately going to look for this information after this video. Thanks for posting this! Love your videos!
But does the ATF allow us to put/keep a brace on it still?
I own the 20ga version and love it. I realize it’s a little awkward but feel it could be useful for hunting as well as home defense.
Thanks for the field strip, quite helpful.
I got the 20 gauge one with a pick rail laser combo put on top and a very bright light. Would not want to be on the other end of that combo.
Love mine in 12ga! Wood furniture too! Go retro man!
Cool man, this is my favourite kind of shotgun too. I always prefer the classics.
Self-defense or Range-toy...?
BOTH...........!! 😁😁😁
got one in our shop right now. Its so light and handy i love the thing.
Ive wanted one of those for a while. Great review as always.
Another great video brother. Thanks for what you do!
God bless all here.
I have the 12 gauge. It is literally Thors hammer. Other than being ear splittering loud. It's awesome.
That Imitation AC/DC Intro Music LOL
For Those About To Rock ( we salute you)
Awesome video nice 410 shotgun thanks for sharing sootch00
The 18" 410 with a stock is pretty cool 😎 too. Very effective with 000 👍
Great video my friend, thank you for sharing it. Stay safe.😊
Got a 20 ga works just fine
Got the 20 gauge Mossberg night stick
Shockwave 410 vs shockwave 12 gauge shorty shells
I put a sleeve on my grip. Helps a lot
Just looks like a heck of a lot fun to be perfectly honest .
I bought one of these for my wife when the first came out several years ago, she loves it. My wife has health issues and neither one of us are "spring chickens", so the lower recoil of .410 and a green laser on top make this a very good self defense tool for some who is recoil sensitive or elderly.
I prefer my 12-gauge shockwave with low recoil buckshot. I put a Seal Tridium sight on the receiver, and it is good to go.
This is such a fun range toy, very controllable.
its beautiful
It's essential to consider its limitations and advantages carefully. Overall, it's another interesting addition to Mossberg's lineup, offering versatility for those who value compactness without compromising firepower.
ill keep the full stock on my shotguns ! nice review !
The 590s in 12 with the mini shells is really the way to go
Could not purchase 410 ammunition for a long time. 20 or 12 Guage everywhere. Finally found some. Way to expensive. Sticking to my 12 Guage.
That PDX1 kicks more than you’d expect which was surprising
@Sootch00 Nice to see that the 590 in .410 is catching on. I told Mossberg that it would work out better that way. Also feel free to check out their full stocked 590 in .410 it's Model # 50700 I think it would be a better fit for a home defense shotgun and it could also be fitted with a set of Ghost ring sights or a micro Red dot
It's a versatile piece, perfect for self-defense with its compact size and manageable recoil.
If you can locate 410 shells, please let us know !
The best accessory for guns like this was a laser that mimicked a buckshot spread pattern. It even dispersed over distance like a shotgun pattern so you could see how much spread you’d get. Sadly the company went out of business. Minus that I’d never buy something like this except as a novelty. Even with cheek weld techniques some RUclipsrs espouse.
I pull significantly left with a Shockwave. The crimson trace laser is a big help.
Just got the s model that takes mini shells idk if it's practical but damn do I love it and it is easy to hide in my car
I have a pic rail on top of mine with a pistol rail light on top. The light operates with a switch on the back easily in reach of the index finger. In indoor or low lighting simply aim the center of the beam at the target. It also has an integrated laser with the light but the laser has proven unnecessary when using a center beam hold. I bought this gun on a whim and have kept it because it has proven to be a practical home defense weapon.
I inherited one of the first Cruisers. It was 12ga. Fired it one time. Nope. Added a stock, changed out the fore end grip that incorporated a light. Slapped on a Hi-Viz over the top of the barrel front sight, and added an ammo carrier to the stock. Now it is a decent firearm for defense. Sootch is right. If you are not going to work with a shorty, you could be dealing yourself a bad hand. For the less experienced shooters, people with grip strength issues, etc. I would recommend a conventional shoulder fired setup. That said, if you can manipulate one of these well, rock on.
With the tang safety the birds head ( raptor) grip is the best way . With a pistol grip it's hard to reach without actually letting go of the grip
I put tennis racket grip tape on the birds head grip. The birds head grip is smooth from the factory and the grip tape helps with the 12 gauge.
Wish I could find 3" 410 shells in my area. It's hard to find any right now and if you can, they've sky rocketed in price. Northwest Ohio
Sometimes Bass Pro-shops (Rossford) has them.
Here in southern West Virginia also.
Fin Feather Fur has had 410 recently.
I just ordered them off of bass pro shop and they shipped to the store, going to pick them up later today. Three boxes of Remington self-defense pictured in the video. Good luck ! not as hard as people are making it out to be. Everything’s expensive so don’t just single out rounds.
@@marsiloficino5060 How much were the 3 boxes?
Not that I claim to be a shotgun expert.Cause I'm not at all, but my mossberg 500 to pierce to have dual action bars And to top it off.I swear the Maverick 88 does as well.
I dream of a side-folding “break” version with a hinge at the front end of the receiver. (Sort of akin to a sub2000, only it folds to the side, not over the top.)
This is where this size and style of shotgun makes sense.
Low (and easily handled) recoil, won't blow your ear drums if shot indoors, multiple shot, hits about as hard as a 44 magnum, plus intimidation factor.
This is, in my view, the peak home defence firearm.
I have a H&R Pardner Pump 12 gauge with the Raptor grip that joker is Heavy but it helps with the recoil .
With a rail and small laser mounted on top, it becomes very easy to align with the target. I tried a pistol grip, from Mossberg, and noted that the shooting experience didn’t really differ from the birds head grip
Sweet little shotty
Would recommend this laser added to a top rail to make targeting easy from hip or any position. Votatu H3L-R Strobe Tactic
Taurus is also responsible for the high price of .410 ammo.
Why would you hold them responsible!!?? If it wasn't for their pistols the need for 410 wouldn't be prevalent as much especially in 2.5"!!
The only thing taurus is responsible for is making sub par firearms
That's what I mean't.....there are so many pistols that take .410 it has driven the price of the shells way up. They used to be cheap.@@enricomandragona163
@@keatonjorgensen8793 yeah ok
If it weren't for the Judge coming to market we wouldn't have seen the defensive ammo choices for .410 ....Personally speaking I'm glad that we have loads like Federal's 3-inch #4 buck (not to be confused with #4 game loads) on offer along with the 2-1/2 and 3-inch '000' buck loads
With the right load, it can be very effective. It's definitely no joke.
I mounted a laser. Hockey tape on the grip.
Be sure to keep your hand in the strap when racking the slide otherwise your hand may extend past the barrel and that's never good.
I don't have a pistol permit, so this is the closest I can get to a pistol chambered in .45
I dont think most people can take a 3in load of 410ga at home defense distance and make it. Even #8 at 15 feet in a 3in load would do massive damage. Now if we consider how much more powerful buck shot or a slog or pdx1 deffender or hornady critical defence are than a game load, im pretty sure that would work well as a home deffense gun.
Brad Williams has a collection of those
I don't know about self-defense but would be a really handy snake gun to keep in the truck or side-by-side etc. I tend to prefer 20ga for general purpose critter-getter.
I might add I think the shockwave is available with a crimson trace laser grip, that makes a lot sence for that firearm.
Good luck getting ammo for it.
Amen. Please read my comment that I just posted ! Thank you !
I own a .410 shockwave and when I shoot it the gun reminds me of firing the M-79 grenade launcher without the sights. There is an awkwardness to it that has to be overcome by training with it a lot.
Have always wanted one. Except here in Crook County Illinois King Pritzker says NO..!
I want one of those
Get 410 shells first before you spend $500. Unless you plan to use the gun as a paperweight
My 500 seems to have twin action bars.
In answer to the question posed in the title (and mainly for the lolz, as the kids say) I reference the gif of the little wise girl who asked, “Why not both?” 😜
Cool idea but here in Canada .410 ammo has been near impossible to find ( don't ask me why) for the last couple years so for us it would just be a club.
I can't tell you when the last time I saw .410 shells on the shelf
Awesome. But 410 shells are hard to find now days ..
With the recent revision of the brace rulings, could you now fit this with a folding pistol brace, if someone were to make a rear pic-rail adapter or similar?
My 18.5 500 mariner has dual action bars, why do people keep saying 500's are only single action bar?
20g 18.5 88/500 cruisers/🌊 are the best For pistol n bird grips really the 18.5 20g cruiser or 🌊/Fanny pack is better for a truck but the 18.5 has more real estate upfront for sling/heatshield/magpul guards
Could have one of these in hand and the Taurus Judge I got from my dad. How is that for ammo commonality lol.
That old box of Federal shells sure takes a FUDD back.
I used to have an 870 express with spare barrels, stocks and chokes to make it a trap or skeet gun, upland or deer gun, and home defense gun. Unfortunately I sold it. Can you order 590 shockwave stocks and barrels to convert it to a traditional gun?
I'd love something like this but, in 20 ga. Every time I have looked I have found the 12 ga with 18" barrel has a 7+1 capacity but, the 20 ga always seems to come with a shorter tube and only has 5+1. I wonder if you could fit a longer tube on the 20 ga to up the capacity?
Id love to see someone design a double barrel shockwave that has a pump action like the binary trigger where it loads on the forward pump for one barrel and the other on the back stroke so u can shoot faster by alternating barrels. Probably not doable but I just want to see something new and cool out of the shotgun world. It doesn't change much 😂😂
Ammo is hard to find
Amen. Please read my comment that I just posted ! Thank you !
I cut my 870 , so no bead.
How to practice . Think you have a bayonet at the End. Point/stabb where want to shoot. Power washer is nice practice ”gun” for training😊
If you want lower recoil, would you not be better off with the 590S, it can shoot mini shells, less recoil and increased capacity.
Put a Stabilizing Brace and it improves handling greatly.
That makes it illegal
@@enricomandragona163Hopefully Sootch highlights this comment
ATF already hates these.
@@marsiloficino5060 I doubt it as gun videos on RUclips are pretty sensored lately
Remember folks most current ballistic tests for self defense .410 ammo was initially for the small barrel governor or Judge pistols.
What a sweet little number that is. I love the look of it. Didn't know it was made in 410. Me want.
You mentioned 500 does not have twin action bars? I think maybe thinking Maverick 88, don't quote me that I don't have a 88 but do have 500 & shock wave both have twin action bar. Other than that. Thanks and take care
Mav 88 had only one as I owned one & traided it for a 12 ga nightstick
For .410 you would probably be better off just putting a pistol grip on a regular .410 500 or 590. It would only be slightly longer and give you an 18 inch barrel with more velocity and the option of choke tubes, you could also put whatever stock ( folding or full ). For the cost of that thing you could get a low end ar15. You should mention that the army only uses the 12 ga 590 & when they put a pistol grip on it its for breaching doors, not fighting.
The shockwave was created not as a useful tool, but a "must-have" for the tactic-cool set. ou know who I mean - the ones who can't utter a complete sentence without the word "tactical" thrown in somewhere to make them cool and tough. Yep, the ones who see them selves as GI Robo-Cop Joe, saving the world for the forces of E-vill.
Apparently, the shockwave has hit saturation point among these folks, so a new variant was need to get them to don their tactical running shoes and dash off to buy one. If you are one of them, be sure to talk tactics while you are out so as to impress everyone with your tacticalness. Oh, who am I kidding - I know you will.
The 500 has two action bars
If its drilled and tapped like my 12g, they make a rail and side saddle for it. Gives you a nice choice for an optic, and with a 45 degree mount, also a light. Don't know if they do that in 410 though. Its a dying caliber.
🤙
I have one with a Demonstrated concepts strap. So fun! Anyone with one of these 410s figure out how to clamp a light to it?
There's a claim rail that attaches
It blows my mind that the US has barrel length restrictions on shotguns and in Canada (where gun laws are very strict) there is no length restrictions.
So What.
Twin action is usually more effective single action
That’s cool but I’d rather have the 590S 12 gauge model that takes the mini shells.
I have the .410 Shockwave. I put a green laser with a built in rail on it and a rubber grip fo the Grip, and a new safety. Works well. Point and shoot.

I need to know where to get 410, all I can find is defense ammo.
Love it! However, ammo here is ridiculous. $40.00 for twenty rounds. Not cost effective for practice.
I tried to purchase one while in Mississippi. Because I'm not a resident they couldn't sell me one because it's considered a "pistol" (?) I was flabbergasted and got a little vocal. But they told me that they had a sister store across the river in Arkansas and gave me directions to it.
I wish it came with a tactical sling.
I own a lot of 12ga shotguns.. and because I also reload my own shotgun shells I have just never had the need for .410ga.. 16ga.. 20ga.. 28ga.. etc. with the only exception being 12ga in Super Magnum 3.5" and 10ga just because 10ga is bad ass!
There aint nothing a versatile 12ga round cant do that those other rounds can do.. and I'll never have to be stocking up on different kinds of shotgun ammo because 12ga alone can do it all.. and if it cant.. a 3.5" Super Magnum or a 10ga will get it done.
With reloading.. I can make custom softer shooting light low recoil rounds.. heavy load high velocity rounds.. and everything in between.. even 1 3/4" mini shells and wax slugs.. so I just never seen the need to own a shotgun in .410ga.. I thought about maybe a lever action in .410ga but I already got a lever action in 12ga.. and I got a shockwave in 12ga.. but a .410 pistol like the Taurus Judge is a whole different story! - now that interests me! - but if I really want to shoot .410ga I can just always get a barrel chamber adapter.. like the rifled ones I got in .22lr.. 9mm.. 45acp.. 357Mag.. 44Mag.. but I believe the .410ga adapter is a smooth bore only and not rifled.
Impossible..
I'm just not a fan of any short-barreled firearm, that sees my hand THAT close to the damned muzzle (esp. if hand operated/pump action). THAT said? The .410 is VERY effective at short range (ie, home defense), and the lighter recoil is appealing to those who find the .12 a tad rough. (I own three Mossy 590 .12's, and LUV 'em!)
I like it but at 500. I mean i paid 269 for my 590a1 with gost sites an stock with 4 rounds. Ive had it for a while. I went skeet shooting with it first time really shooting it. I hit more than guy that went with us funny he had a bennly, vest, hat, bag for extra bullets. I really wore him out that was 2 years ago.
Are you the man i talked to at camping world years ago he was working there he looked a lot like you and sounded like too. Just wondering i really enjoyed our conversation in nashville tn
How much ?
Hello::: Well I walked in gun place and Saw that in show case, I think 12 ga. some time ago. I thought thats illegal. Then I thought no I am in Rural King !!! I feel 20 Ga cheeper ammo and does better job. Again that maybe great for a wife. I have the 8 shot 12 in Bed room for 15 to 20 years. Only $220 back them maybe. Should have got 2 at that time. Rock on sootch.
Thank you for your review and the video. I am very much interested in the shock wave in 410 gauge. However, I have not been able to locate 410 shells for over 19 months. Yes, 19 months of visiting mega stores as well as my local gun stores. 410 SHELLS are missing in action. Even online. The only shells in 410 that I have found, are literally $11 a shell...yes, $11 per shell.
So, let me ask you this. Do gun manufactures make sure that the gun they plan to put out there in the market place has a chance to be loaded with ammo that is available? I mean, seriously, why would you offer the public a gun that is unusable since they knew, or should have known that 410 shells are nowhere to be found ? Am I missing something ? And why did you agree to even test the gun, since you, yourself knew that it is literally impossible to get 410 shells just about anywhere? As you, a professional on youtube, I respect you, and your opinions...but this video , featuring the shockwave 410 was beneath your standards that we got to respect so much.
I will gladly purchase the shockwave 410 if Mossberg agrees to ship me 410 shells like they did for you ! We are subscribers..we are disappointed that you pushed a gun that, at the current time, is not usable for the lack of 410 shells for over at least 2 years, anywhere ! You ought to record another video apologizing for your viewers who will run to purchase a gun that, currently, will be useless.
Thank you. God Bless !
Cool. I wouldn't use one nor depend upon it for self defense.
