I wish they'd bring back Talk About Games. Mike probably wouldn't be willing to though, you can tell he really didn't want to be there in this episode, same goes for most of the later episodes of TAG.
I really wish we would have gotten the Grand Edition of Brigandine localized, but I've put many thousands of hours into this game I got out of a bargain bin back in 1998. I was really pleased that Happinet brought us a sequel that gets the praise that the series deserves (currently sitting at a 9/10 user rating on Steam with a Very Positive review rating) from fans.
Recommendation: "Metal Gear Solid (AKA "Metal Gear: Ghost Babel") for Game Boy Color. A lot of people assume it's just a watered down handheld of the PS1 game but no, it's its own thing. The story isn't considered canon to the main series but it's a good throwback to the older MG titles for the MSX systems. The scoring system is the only thing I don't like about it but overall it's a good entry.
@@kingcaesar3693 Yeah. I've seen ones for over $40, cartridge only. Of course that purchase would only make sense if one has the hardware for it, which many don't anymore. Never been in the DS or Virtual stores either.
WOO! Brigandine is an old favorite of mine, love seeing it here! I've got the sequel, too, although I haven't yet started it - but I saw in the clip you showed, Kenji Terada was part of it. That name brings back memories; the FIRST game like this - this RPG-SRPG hybrid thing - that I ever played was also his work. It's called Dark Wizard, for the Sega CD, and it was AMAZING. Seriously, when I first played the PS1 Brigandine, it just hit me with a ton of nostalgia because the gameplay and flow were just like Dark Wizard's. From the hex grid battles to the soldier and monster units (all with upgrades), to the ability to send them out on quests, it's all there. I would totally suggest you trying it out, although bear in mind it's going to be dated! And while it does cut to a (2D) attack animation when you fight, like Brigandine does in 3D, it *also* has an option where you can disable it, and just get text reports of the damage done. Just an FYI, since you mentioned how repetitive that got.
There was actually an updated version of Brigandine called Brigandine: Grand Edition that got rid of the 3D battles in favor of quick sprite animations on the map to show fights. The Grand Edition also added anime cutscenes, more story for some characters, and a proper end-game fight. It's a wonderful version of the game and a lot of the things they implemented in that was used for the sequel, Brigandine the Legend of Runersia.
Same. Got a copy from LRG. Just... haven't gotten to it. LOVED the original; I am supremely pleased it's the one they are talking about (both because of my fond memories of it, and I didn't want to have to skip this video to avoid spoiling the new one).
I personally still consider Castlevania III the best of the classicvania games, fucking amazing game. I passed up Brigandine back in the day because reviewers mentioned how in depth it was and how different it was from Final Fantasy Tactics. Really regret not getting it back then since it's super pricey to get now, I definitely want to try it out though.
In Brigadine you can speed up the animated battles or turn them off completely in the options. Turning them off makes the game way better. Even in the new switch one. I'm surprised you never checked the settings section just to see what it had.
Brigandine FYI you can turn the battle animations off it speeds the game up by a lot and they are secret monsters there only can be acquired with quests and items.
4:00 there are some books that are actually like this thousands of orcs for example. it's like listing each and every one of orks being ganked and like before that and after that the same dude actually wrote proper books with proper pacing or princes in amber. great books but every time they travel it's pages after pages listing how blade of grass becomes red or purple and how stones in the road turn into sand or wood
I was born in 1982, my big Cousin used to be killer. He beat, Tmnt, Castelevania, Simons Quest, Castlevania 3, Rush n Attack. He was bad. He used to be patient n try n teach me. I was like 6 years old. Mario, he used to make Videos of him n I playing, on a vhs, with his metal/rock music. Crazy.
23:30 You have to hold the button down! Trevor will begin to whip and throw the subweapon in a rapid fire fashion. If you have a II or III its way better.
There is no more accurate description of Dark Souls than “it’s a rolling simulator.” Yet, I do feel that the games are well beyond that, despite the gameplay. I’ve beaten Souls 1 and 2, and I’m working on 3. These games are the natural progression of Castlevania, specifically Simon’s Quest. The worlds that are only semi-linear. The brutal combat. The trial-and-error gameplay. The natural growth towards proficiency. I love Dark Souls, and I’m not surprised that I do because Castlevania III: Dracula’s Curse is one of my favorite games of all time.
I recently bought Castlevania III cart for NES, so it was nice to hear Mike's overall take on the game. I die a lot when playing, but for some reason I don't get frustrated. Maybe it's because unlike modern games, the cause of being killed is not because the targeting lost focus, or camera swung around or getting stuck on an obstacle (cough, Elden Ring)--when you die it's something you can learn from, and do better the next time. Also I just noticed that the remake of Brigandine is new on Steam as well, for PC gamers, which is a good option because the PS1 game costs a fortune now. I would miss the close-up battles that remind me of the games of that era, and the cute pixel graphics of the units on the tactical map are really nice on the PS1 original game.
I was all aboard the Sega Genesis train by the time Castlevania 3 and Super Mario 3 were released, and I pretty much left 8-bit gaming in the rearview ever since.
Great podcast a usual, I've mentioned it before, but it would be awesome to get Ryan's opinion on Dark Wizard. It's like brigandine before it was brigandine
I would love to here you guys talk about Vanguard Bandits, Ogre Battle March of the Black Queen or Vandal Hearts 2, those are some amazing tactical rpgs that don’t have as much of a learning curve as Brigandine. I had to learn Brigandine without the manual as a kid and it was ridiculously frustrating
Recommendations: The Revenge of Shinobi (Genesis) Shadowrun (Genesis) Robotech - Battlecry (XBox or PS2) (Since Mike is/has been watching Robotech lately)
Oh man I totally forgot about this game! I had it too back in the day along with so many other great PS1 games. Unfortunately, I sold most of them including this one for PS2 or Xbox games.
Hey Mike, you like both Star Trek and RTS games like Warcraft, right? But have you ever heard of Star Trek Armada II Fleet Operations? I know it's mouthful but the game is actually real good. Make sure that you will play the Fleet Operation version tho, trust me you want that one
After all these years of AVGN, James & Mike, Talk about games. No one has even mentioned Castle Quest. It’s not like it’s my favorite game, but come on. It’s a crazy, complex, hard game for NES. A lot to talk about. Almost every other NES game made, including unofficials, has been discussed. It’s time. Lol
Yeah I have one of those Everdrives that won't run Castlevania 3 properly. I went and bought it for real eventually for close to current game pricing, worth it though! Has gone up in value even.
This don’t sound anything like the Full House theme song. If anyone disagrees, I’ll have to ask: “Has anyone seen (The Full House girls) Oliver Closeoff?”. If anyone says “no” to that question of mine, then I’ll have to spray paint them., Because they’re Moe wearing purple and I’ll Spray paint Moe red.
Ryan is absolutely wrong in saying Brigadine is "straight gameplay" compared to Advance Wars. Both have story which you have to deal with, except in Advance Wars it's far easier to skip & ignore. Brigadine forces the story on you & it's made _very_ difficult to ignore, much less skip.
Good stuff, Mike! Try and keep any visuals minimum. Sounds great on the podcast as well as youtube but we can't see what ur drawing. You are the ON.....original nerd.
Brigandine was my most-played game on the PS1. Such an underrated game. Never played Grand Edition, but played the shit outta Legend of Runersia, which definitely improves on the original, albeit the graphics and artwork are terrible. No English voiceacting either.
I'd love some more GB stuff, out of the top of my head 007. ...it was a horrible game that for some reason I played the hell off when I was 8 or so. Would love to get your POV on it >
If I don't like the knockback and it's "part of the game" then I just don't play it since it wasn't designed properly to have challenge without bullshit
You guys gotta get that white board on standby, I like it when there is some interactive bits like that✌🏻✌🏻 we Talking About Games let's get some dry-erase going on 🤣🤓
I watch this show with the enthusiasm I formerly set aside for James and Mike Mondays
exactly
Unfortunately it still has a fraction of the views
A *small* fraction
@@DOSRetroGamer no James no fames
Keep the content coming my dudes. Great podcast. The best parts are usually when you go on tangents about the 90s and your childhoods vs today
I agree. I could just have them talk about life and family instead of games and I would be all in. Those segments are the best.
I wish they'd bring back Talk About Games. Mike probably wouldn't be willing to though, you can tell he really didn't want to be there in this episode, same goes for most of the later episodes of TAG.
Castlevania 2: Simon's Quest actually had a novelization in the "Worlds of Power" series.
Props to Mike sharing the stair mash technique I taught him @ 23:05
27:43 - I did a test here. For the first upgrade you need 4 hearts, and for the 2nd you need 8.
I love when you guys talk about other stuff.
I really wish we would have gotten the Grand Edition of Brigandine localized, but I've put many thousands of hours into this game I got out of a bargain bin back in 1998.

My favorite part of Dracula the book is where Dracula makes Jonathan Harker dinner and then goes into the minutia of his taxes for fifty pages.
I knew Mike had to talk about Castlevania 3 after what he's been through.
I really loved brigandine. Very underated
Happy that Ryan is as comfortable as ever being himself during Pride month. You go Ryan!

Wow Brigadine is amazing
Another solid episode, thanks dudes
I wish an episode was about Castlevania Rebirth and Contra Rebirth. I need to know more about both.
Awesome timing...I've been planning to start the ps4 version of Brigandine...for awhile now. :)
Played the demo a while ago . Seems like a great sequel

Mike makes reading Dracula sound like a dungeon master is walking you through a D&D campaign 🙂👍
You guys should put out an audiobook descriptively telling the story of Castlevania 3. Every little detail.
"They are oiled up... and I don't need to see it" 😂 #relatable
Now im curious about Brigandine if i get the chance. Just hearing of how many arcade cabinets that Ryan owns astounds me.

Best part of the week!

Brigandine is underrated, especially the original one.
