If you guys were anybody else, I'd of clicked past that ad. But because it's you guys, I let it play. Thanks for doing this podcast. I've heard Mike mention it at least a couple dozen times on his Twitch stream, and decided to check out Ep 1 a couple days ago. I ended up binge-watching it, except for breaks to do chores and shit.. So, thanks. This is a great show; literally laughing out loud, at times. My neighbors probably think I've finally lost what little was left of my mind. :p
King of fighters is my favorite... Also just felt the need to mention the 4 buttons on kof have different functions based on pushing either 2 buttons for dodge and blowback , or from distance away from your opponent , the button will change to make up for the missing buttons, in a way there's more options in kof that sf
Great episode. A few things to note on DD II (one of my favorite games): 1. If you play a 2p "B" game by yourself, you can beat up Player 2 and steal his lives, so you have a few extra lives as Player 1, instead of the normal 3 lives. 2. On the conveyor belt screen in Stage 6, if you walk far enough to the edge of the first conveyor belt, you can jump off of that directly onto the third conveyor belt, and completely skip the second conveyor belt (the one that goes in the opposite direction).
Mike skipped over level 4 in Double Dragon 2 after the Helicopter. It's the underwater base where you fight guys and bosses in a narrow hallway with a spiked ceiling
I think it would be great to see mike do a dedicated stream of blackthorne and bring that to this show possibly someday. It would be a good opportunity to discuss some of the other games that are in that style as well ( prince of Persia, out of this world, flashback, Abe’s odyssey, etc ).
Awesome episode guys, Mike talking about Double Dragon II kind of makes me want to jump into it again since it's been a hell of a long time since I last played it. King of Fighters is a series I have dabbled with a few times, but never really sat down and actually played it for an extended amount of time. Always liked what I played, just never gave it the time I have other fighting games.
Your final boss for Supreme Master mode looks very familiar. Search up "Rey from Fist of the North Star". The timeline matches up too because FOTNS was big back then in Japan.
Now that you say that, I think you’re on to something. I’m pretty sure that that DDII storyline is had post-apocalyptic elements. And that box art looks very reminiscent of FOTNS characters.

"...the little Odd Job lookin' dude...is not good..." (Re: Chin from DD3). I played that game a *lot* (which may explain some things about me, but I digress), so I can understand why you and probably most players think he's "not good". Yes, he gets a 0 for style (both looks and moves), and his sprint speed slower than a baby in a walker chair. However, his basic punches are ridiculously strong. The only faster way to take down an opponent is to use his subweapon (claws), which makes his already OP punches OPer. And I just checked a few speedruns. Indeed, except for a few platforming challenges, it looks like they use Chin whenever he's available since he tears scrubs apart like a machine. So to wit, he doesn't fly all over the place like the ninja, but he's brutally efficient and, therefore, the *best* fighter in DD3. If you read this far, what's wrong with you??
This was an interesting episode cause it is hard to talk about fighting games, especially since its a somewhat Niche genre. KOF especially isn't as popular in the English speaking world as SF or MK. Ryan's passion for KOF XV is pretty nice to see. Loved that Mike seemed to think it's more about arcade mode instead of versus mode when they were talking about it, but I guess he has arcade style games on the mind. Loved that Mike's eyes lit up as soon as Ikari warriors and Athena were brought up. It's funny they mentioned Garou since they played it a few years back on a mini arcade machine.
the best thing among other best things about King of fighters is how the characters look, wat they are wearing, like jeans jackets, caps, trousers, or pants, with shoes, boots, sneakers (or how ever it was writtem) t-shirts, or just regular sumer shirts, or buisiness clothes, where street fighter and the rest the characters are either always in military setting, martial arts uniforms or half naked all the time wherever they go, and there is no realism its more like wrestling characters than street fighting characters.
Well I've been debating the new King of Fighters and now I'm sold. That said, I'm a PlayStation gamer and quite proficient at fighting games, I've always preferred their D Pads to even the best arcade sticks.
I owned Double Dragon 2 for the nes back in the late 80s and I remember triggering a bug or a glitch were you have infinite lives. It happened to me maybe 2 times and it was during the big tank level.
Double Dragon 2 was a little tricky to control at first (we tend to think "this button does this thing, always"). It's easier to remember "the B button always attacks to the left, and A attacks to the right" rather than trying to remember whether you are to punch or kick.
Love the show. Good show. Dude u have a plaque with Harry Kim in the background. There was this 1 episode where harry and chakotay had to go back in time to save Voyager. Good episode. Just like this show also.
Idk if you'll see this Mike or Ryan, but to answer mikes question about older games being at competitions, yes people still hold side tournaments for older games at competitions and they are usually extremely entertaining to watch. Another great episode guys, and it is wild that Mike beat Double Dragon in the arcade. And holy shnickies how is there that many King of Fighters game?
Mike you should really try Double Dragon II Famicom version. The hardest difficulty there is way harder than the NES Supreme Master! You’ll love / hate it!
Gotta say thanx Ryan I had not idea about SaltyBets, not a Twitch person but I used to mess around with Mugen for all my teen years. This might actually get me into watching Twitch now
Ryan is absolutely wrong about the PS controller's d-pad being "disconnected" or w/e, the d-pad is one piece, and the four directions protrude up from the controller, but it is most assuredly one piece. All you even have to to is look at the d-pad while you press only the down button, but press it more right, then more left, you'll see the whole d-pad move in unison. It's the best d-pad ever, but idk why he thought it was just buttons, like the arrows on a keyboard. When I got the PS1 back in 1995 iirc I could feel instantly that they weren't just buttons, that it was, in fact, one whole d-pad piece, and I was just a 13yo kid, and being a crazy 13yo kid I decided to take the controller apart, cut the d-pad into for pieces, sand down the edges, and put it back together. At the time I really liked the idea of each direction being a button for some reason. I kicked the shit out of Tekken 2 and 3, Battle Arena Toshinden 1 and 2, Street Fighter Alpha 2 and 3, and probably some other fighting games I can't remember using that controller. If you still honestly think, after doing a simple test in one direction, that the PS d-pad is comprised of simply individual buttons, I challenge you to depress both the up and down directions at the same time, see if you can.
Hoping someday you guys talk about like, Videomation, Mario Paint, Art Academy, that one game where the guy pees in the snow and you can make him drink different food colorings to change the color, those kinds of games, would be pretty cool to hear you guys opinions on them
Double Dragon II was my fav of the first 3. Not as hard as the first, but the gameplay was way more fun. Mike nailed a lot in this vid. III was ok... just didn't have quite the perfect gameplay balance II did.
