Every time Ryan is building up to the conclusion of his point… right before the point is revealed… Mike: “Oh do you remember this obscure almost not related thing?”.
I agree. I think the off-topic chat is the best part. Promoting the podcast as simply a "book club style" discussion of 2 games per week is such a disservice to the amount of topics they really explore each episode
Love your podcast guys, keep up the great work! I look forward to this every week. My favorite part is listening to Mike talk about old games, we share that passion!
Great episode! Mike is hilarious and such a good gamer, but wow Ryan is seriously good at explaining things, I actually understood exactly what he was saying about the axelay and that graphics layer that allows the game to mimic mode 7. Normally when people explain stuff like that, I would be following along but there would always be a few things that I wouldn’t feel confident I understood properly, but when he described that I knew 100% that I was accurately grasping everything
Found about this podcast not long ago, marathoned through all the earlier episodes in a few days. Fun time, most of the old picks I played or at least heard about back in the day. Great show.
Axelay is my favorite Shmup on the Snes. You can feel that the guys, who founded Treasure, made this game. I beat this on Hard when i made a LP of this. I love to beat this on very Hard. I'm still trying... 😄
Great episode guys, love Mike's deep dives into some of these games. Quick question about the Patreon though, Ryan mentioned that there were as many bonus episodes as the 35 regular episodes. I am a patron but only see 20 bonus episodes, 21 including the batman review which doesn't seem to be categorized correctly. Where can I find the rest? Really wanting more talk about games.
I never watched RoboCop as a kid because I thought Terminator was cooler at the time and only recently am I realizing how awesome those RoboCop movies actually were.
I remember the most hype thing about Street Fighter II: Champion Edition when it first dropped for me was not even being able to play as the 4 grandmasters. It was the fact that you got alternate costumes and both players could choose the same fighter. Of course even then most people just stuck with picking Ryu and Ken.
Great show, the only podcast I listen to weekly. I like it when you guys go off topic, it extends the show, awesome. Mike, why are you saying “Shmup”? You’ve said before you hate that, please explain? I love the show, keep up the good work.
So if I understand the Axelay thing, it's like there are a bunch of backgrounds, which are all the same background but some of them are brighter and more squished, while the others are darker and more stretched out, and every scanline from every image is combined into a single massive background of gibberish data, and the program that actually draws the background is being told to only draw the scanlines from the most squished image for the top part of the screen, and as it moves down the screen it keeps changing to slightly less squished images, so that by the time it reaches the bottom of the screen it's drawing the most stretched-out image.
Yes. Also imperium is another shmup that has the same feature in axelay where in which you get hit, you lose a weapon. In imperium, you lose a power up
I do like Axelay on Super Nintendo first time playing the game, first level has the vertical shooter style that always gets me killed few times but if you just keep doing it over and over again you understand. the second level what does the side-scrolling style shooter or shmup so overall pretty difficult game I still enjoy it.
Hyper Street Fighter II is all of the SF2 games mashed together. You can play as any character from World Warrior, Champion, Turbo, Super, or Super Turbo. It's the one that came out on PlayStation 2 in the Anniversary Collection. Despite having a ton of Dark Stalker games, I'm disappointed that we get two versions of Vampire Savior, but neither of them are as complete as the home ports on Saturn and PlayStation.
Peter Weller did a great job making robocop look believable. His armor was very well done for back then. I would still go see movies if we still had ones like that being made. I don't watch movies anymore really, they just suck.
Also, for Mike, the vertical SHMUP Dragon Blaze, has 8 difficulty levels, that all has names, the easiest one being called "Monkey".....I wanna see Mike try to beat that....
Speaking of licensed game collections, I would kill for a PS1/Arcade era X-Men/Marvel vs. Street Fighter/Capcom collection, since I never actually got to own any of those games, but I doubt the licensing would clear for that.
Since yall talk Axeplay please review treasure games the best developer i ever seen with 2d graphics also IKARUGA I DARE YALL TO TALK ABOUT THAR MASTERPIECE
When I worked at the local theater, Robocop 2014 was showing. Being a true Robocop fan, I thought it would be funny to vomit in the bottom of a large tub of popcorn and mask the smell with heaps of butter. It was one of my greatest pranks ever. God I love Robocop. Almost as good as the time that mixed my neckbeard shavings into the ice cream. Oh yeah... also that time I farted into the cotton candy. Watching those posers eat it made my day.
If you want more views, just get rid of that horrendous intro music. Everytimes i'm turned off by that piece of crappy music. So imagine people who don't know your content and click on the video and are greeted by that avalanche of aggressive turd, they just automatically leave.

That’s cuz they talk about games and sometimes other stuff
this nonsense must stop. bring forward the nerd. or atleast James. he can talk about games, film or anything and it'll be interesting.
That was a very interesting explanation about Axelay by Ryan. Also, I really enjoyed Mike's streaming of that game.

I love Axelay! Apparently if you beat the game on the highest difficulty it mentions Axelay 2. That never happened.
When the TMNT Cowabunga Collection is released, you guys should talk about a couple of those games.
Great show as always guys!
Axelay is my favorite Shmup on the Snes. You can feel that the guys, who founded Treasure, made this game.

The off-topic discussions and random tangents are every bit as entertaining as the talks about games!

Robocop and Robocop 2 were actually filmed in Houston.
Great show, the only podcast I listen to weekly. I like it when you guys go off topic, it extends the show, awesome. Mike, why are you saying “Shmup”? You’ve said before you hate that, please explain? I love the show, keep up the good work.
I prefer the term shooter. But when I say that, many people think I mean a fps. When I say “shmup” it can’t be confused with another meaning.

@@supergeoff yep. Also I think blaster master zero has the same mechanic, but it doesn’t by your health but your power up meter.

The director of The Empire Strikes Back also directed RoboCop 2. 👍
I have a fantasy of Ryan...explaining Saga Frontier.
Oh my gosh… let’s go! Maybe someday.

Why are shoot em ups called shmups and beat em ups not called bumps?
Bumps is a mini game in N.A.R.C. 😆
Wouldn't it be a bmup, though?
