Once upon a time The Onimusha Series sat at the cutting edge of Capcom's early 2000s catalogue - outselling Resident Evil, Devil May Cry and Street Fighter and introducing the world to a twisted world of fantastical samurai, haunting demons and genuine Japanese history.
So what went wrong? How did the games go from PlayStation 2 phenomenon to utter failure within a single generation? and could it ever come back?
In a world currently obsessed with everything from Ghost of Tsushima to Shogun - we're going to explore the vast history of one of the most peculiar video game series in existence and find out what links Mega man, Final Fantasy, Yakuza and Godzilla into one single confusing franchise.
It's part critique, part retrospective, part review and part history lesson - obviously full of spoilers and obviously full of my opinions

So you might have noticed that this video took a little while longer than normal to release. Unfortunately earlier this year I was diagnosed with cancer and have been going through treatment ever since which has been about as awful a process as you can imagine.
This video literally couldn't have happened without the support of my girlfriend Steph, the support of my family and friends - and the generosity of my patrons. That monthly income has made a huge difference while I've been going through this so just to repeat the message at the end of the video. A huge and heartfelt thank you. I don't know how I'll ever repay you but hopefully videos like this can make for a good start.

Sucks to hear that man, hope you get better!
I wish you and your family the best
congrats on getting this out, i hope the next news you get is finally good and you can put this shit behind you
Sorry to hear the news. You have the highest quality content on youtube and we're wishing you the best!
shit man, hope youre better soon
Even while fighting cancer my man puts out consistent bangers
Believe me it hasn't been easy in the slightest and more than once I thought about just scrapping everything. It's been so nice to see the response and honestly has really picked me up
@@IFinishedAVideoGame I'm so sorry to hear about that. By the great output and quality of your videos one would have never guessed.
I respect that a lot and I hope you'll be able to keep us entertained until you run out of video games to review. Your channel is the best retrospective channel. Your uploads are actual events.
Keep doing what you love and what you're good at, and we'll be here to watch and support you
@@IFinishedAVideoGametbh I wish I can take your cancer or switch with you. You deserve much more since you do these in depth videos. That I use from time to time to sleep too and have more insight into these game series.
I'm not joking. I wish you the best and hopefully there is good news in the future for your diagnosis.
@@IFinishedAVideoGame Mate I wish you all the best. I watch your videos immediately upon upload and am a big fan of your style.
@@IFinishedAVideoGame I know that Metroid fiasco was a huge kick to the proverbial nuts. Glad you get to see evidence that was a fluke and not the norm! One day we shall have to make a video about the rise and fall and rise again of IFAVG ;) You're becoming the companies you cover LOL
Hey Matt, I'm a silent bystander but still,
this video hits us at quite the peculiar time in my life, where I've spent the past two months grieving the loss of a family member and also a dear friend, seeking comfort in finally playing Dawn of Dreams myself - a game that I've only ever watched my dear friend play while I was sat at the sidelines, content with them benig the one to go through all the hardships of playing the game... add to that the fact that I've only just veeeery recently discovered your channel, genuinely adoring all the work and research you're putting into it... as well as reading up on your own life-changing situation going on... I'll admit, I feel extremely sentimental seeing this video get uploaded. And that's before I've even watched a single second of it.
Before I go watch this next entry in your legacy of beautifully and lovingly crafted retrospectives of the games we all love and connect to, I just wanted to leave this - admittedly schmaltzy - thank-you, for providing me and certainly lots of other people with your insight, your wit, your dedication to this form of art we all hold so very dear - and, more selfishly, helping me cope with my own situation.
I wish nothing but the best for you in these hard times, and I can't begin to express just how much this video means to me already.
Please take it easy.
We're a patient bunch, so don't overexert yourself.
Thank you so much. That's possibly one of the kindest comments I've ever received and all I can say is it really makes a massive difference to read things like that. I hope that you're coping well given your situation and that little moments like this can provide a bit of respite. I know they do for me so once again - thank you
This was beautiful. Thank you for sharing.
Yet another massive addition to my "videos to listen to while editing" playlist
Yooooo I just finished your fatal frame video before watching this lol
I'm honored to be on there! When I'm in the clear it would be so good to get you on my Patron podcast to talk Onimusha (and survival horror in general!)
We didn't need to know :)
Yes. Finally. Another lengthy retrospective on a series I know little of but will almost certainly learn a lot about. Thank you for all your work, and I hope you're doing well on the health side of things. Genuinely. 🙏
When it came out, Onimusha was the bomb. Still a great series.
Wish you experienced it back then. It was HUGE
I really appreciate that. Things have been very tough I won't like but getting this video out is a real weight off my shoulders. Hope you enjoy it!
@@IFinishedAVideoGameyou’re the best RUclips channel for everything lengthy by an impressive margin. Your tone, voice, phrasing, editing, research, everything actually is god tier level
Out of every forgotten franchises, I think Onimusha is probably my favorite growing up and really got me interested into other Japanese related media. Genuinely thrilled you chose to cover this series and hopefully this may spark some new interest into the franchise and maybe bring some life back into it.
Agreed
Let's hope that all of this current Japanese history mania can bleed over into some interest in Onimusha! I can't imagine a better series to check out for people who loved Shogun!
Praying for your health man your honestly one of the best retrospective channels out there
It definitely has helped me through many a lonely night (in a melancholy good kind of way) while spending the winter weekends in my cottage.
Thank you my friend. I'm for sure having a rough time of things at the moment but seeing the love on the videos has really helped pick me up
The best*
Jean Reno is literally the reason I know about Onimusha. I was at a hand shop looking at games and stopped and said "is that The Professional"? Bought it immediately
Don't get me wrong - I love Jean Reno and in particular Leon and The Big Blue - but he is definitely a weird choice for Onimusha 3!
So proud of you for getting this done.
Exceptional work, noble warrior! You shine with the brilliance of a thousand stars. ✨
❤️
Not once in my life did I ever think I'd watch up to a 7 hour video game retrospective video, yet this is will be the 5th one for me. You're amazing at what you do!
Lightweight 😅
It's 4.5 hours not 7 hours though......
Glad to hear I could be part of introducing you to this crazy world of super long videos!
@@SpiritStoneWarrior94-yx3gs I was referring to the Castlevania video, which is the longest video I've watched from IFinishedAVideoGame
A while ago I was home alone. My kids and wife were abroad and I came down with a severe case of pneumonia. Your voice and videos essentially nursed me through that time. I just want you to know that. I'm deeply grateful and would do anything to repay the favour.
That's really nice to know that my videos could help out. Glad you're feeling better and thanks for leaving a bit of kindness on this one - its' really appreciated at the moment
Man… going through cancer and still putting out amazing work like this, you are a legend! Sending the best vibes possible, and giving up all of my luck 🍀 so you can pass through this!!
Thanks my friend. It's been a brutal slog I won't like and ended up being delayed by about 9 weeks but it's nice that it's finally out
To this day Onimusha is one of my favorite game series. I loved it so much that with hardly any talking about it to my dad when Onimusha 2 was released I came home from school to find a copy of it waiting for me. To this day Onimusha makes me think of my dad and how much I miss him. It's a great game series and thank you for making this retrospective. Hope it helps others become interested in one of the coolest stories I ever stumbled across as a teen.
That's really sweet to hear. I hope this video can remind you of him as well!
@@IFinishedAVideoGame It really did. I truly hope you will be alright and wishing you all the best. You might not know it but to this day Onimusha is one of my favorite series. I've gone through the entire series multiple times. Thank you truly for your time and effort on this video and I just hope if I can help in any way then I hope to.
W dad
Onimusha is probably my favorite PS2 franchise. I discovered the games as a teen and ate them up hook, line and sinker.
It's a shame that we never got more of them, but at the same time I don't think the market is quite there for games like these. If anything, it would be fun to see a more indie-like take on the formula and setting.
I wish you all the best with your health and want you to know that your channel has kept me afloat among my own struggles. Keep going and thank you for providing absolute excellency in your content.
The Nioh franchise is practically a spiritual successor. Tho I would love to see a modern sengoku era survival horror with real passion and effort put into it as opposed to leaning into character action spectacle
Thanks very much my friend. I really appreciate your kind words - they really do help
Unlike the subjects of your previous videos, I'm not super familiar with this franchise; but I am excited to watch it regardless and learn. Your works are truly an example of artisanal passion, I hope your treatment is going well and you are taking a well-deserved rest!
Thanks my friend. I am indeed going to have a little break for awhile. I'm waiting on some quite serious test results so the hope is that they come back positive and I can finally let go of some of this anxiety and fear I've been carrying for the last three months!
@@IFinishedAVideoGame Fingers crossed that the test results come back as you need them. Your videos, particularly the Castlevania retrospective are like "comfort food" for me, so I hope you recuperate fully and continue doing them as long as you enjoy them!
THANK YOU MY FRIEND!
You are the least generic most important video essay rectrospectivist that ever was! Who else is gonna do Onimusha big like this?
One thing I really pride myself on is picking interesting series to cover that might not get attention from elsewhere. There are so many great channels covering series like Dark Souls, Elder Scrolls etc so why not talk about something that has been genuinely forgotten!
Since your Castlevania retrospective you have been my favorite creator of video essays. Your main strength is your effort in making the audience get an understanding of the context for the release of the videogame, which makes all the technical information and critical reception much more sense. If there is something I take away from your approach to this genre of youtube videos that I love, is exactly that.
I hope you get better and bless us with more insight into great video games. You truly are unique.
Honestly I just love trying to transport you guys back in history to feel what it was like! There are so many other videos to see if a game holds up or not - I feel like this is an interesting way of looking at older games! It's like a borrowed nostalgia which I think people really enjoy!
This comment is literally me, i couldn't have said it better, like all of that, kinda scary how much i agree actually
Matt, you are a master of the video essay craft. From script to footage to your voice recording... I love watching (and re-watching) your videos
Thanks my friend that's really kind of you to say
I've been following your channel for a while, and your retrospectives have been a source of joy and nostalgia for me.
Hearing about your diagnosis was a shock and I can't imagine what you're going through, but know that you have a community here that deeply cares about you and is sending all their positive energy your way. Take all the time you need to focus on your health and recovery. We're all rooting for you, and we'll be here eagerly waiting for your return whenever you're ready. Thank you for everything you've given us, and stay strong.
Thanks so much my friend. I'm currently just waiting on dates for my surgery and then hopefully I'll be able to put all this behind me. It has been extremely hard but something about the release of this video has put me into a much better frame of mind. Seeing all the positivity and support has really meant a lot to me so thanks for taking the time to comment
Just wanted to give a little bit of support. The fact you manged to get this video out whilst struggling with cancer is just amazing.
Unlike other retrospectives you put so much effort into finding interviews and press releases which fleshes out the video so well.
Onimusha is my favourite game series with dawns of dreams being my personal favourite. I even have a bishamon sword tattoo, glad to see it get more coverage.
This one and vagrant story cemented you as one of the best.
My wishes for your good health .
I really appreciate that - it's super kind for you to support the channel like that and at the moment, considering everything, it means more than ever. I hope you enjoyed the video!
Not all heroes wear capes…but they do make the best god damn retrospectives in the known universe even while fighting a horrible affliction. You got this bro!
Thank you so much my friend. It's been very tough and quite a few times I've thought about just packing it in until I'm all clear - but actually finishing this and seeing all the positive reception has been amazingly uplifting.
I'm sure I've still got many dark nights ahead of me but this has been a real bright moment in an otherwise rough period
I made it to the end, fantastic work, and I am pulling for you and your recovery! This was one of my fav franchises growing up, and you've truly done it's history justice with this retrospective.
That's great to hear. I'm really jazzed people are enjoying it
I love this! Onimusha is so underrated nowadays but I grew up with this series and it's one of my favorites. Really enjoying the video, thanks!
That's great to hear. Thanks for watching!
These were my favorite games growing up, second to none. I remember we had 1 PS between me, my brother and 3 cousins and we each had a safe file and our own game and would take turns when someone died. What a blast down memory lane, TY for the upload!
Exactly the same mate when you die you pass the controller 🎮
There is something so special about cooperatively playing through a single player game. I've got some great memories of doing that with friends and my brother
@@IFinishedAVideoGame yea, and the older ones were always the best so when their turn came up it would take FOREVER.. lol
wishing you the best in your treatment, man. i love your videos! ❤
I really appreciate that. We can just hope for the best
During the 2000's i was in my 20's and i spent a lot of my younger days playing onimusha series. Watching this retrospective brings lots of sweet memories of my time playing the series during late nights, timing my attack, organizing my items and also managing my resources tnx for making this video, this has a very special place in my heart. Salute to u sir, for your time and making the definite onimusha video on youtube ever! ❤️ 👍💥⚔️
Thanks my friend! Hopefully this video can remind some people of this special series place in history!
What an amazing video! Whenever you release new content it's always an event for me. You're so good at diving into the development backgrounds and the historical context in which a game was released, it simply makes you the best at what you do. I wish you all the best and all the strength you need in your own battle with cancer.
Thanks so much! I don't think I'm the best "reviewer" but one thing I do really love is telling the "story" of a franchise complete with the studios and context and everything outside of the game that contributes to it's legacy. It's been really fun to watch people enjoying at as much as I do
Thanks for your kind words also - it really does give me strength
Matusda's story is even more both tragic and badass. He also almost went deaf by ignoring an ear infection while filming a movie. It was said that he saw urinating blood and thought hee had merely injured himself but when he had realized it was cancer he refused chemotherapy to film Black Rain because he didn't want it affecting his acting and by the time the movie wrapped up it had spread to his spine and lungs.
It's really very sad isn't it. He's a really captivating actor and getting to watch a few of his movies for this retrospective was one of the funnest parts!
Holy cow the insane timing of opening RUclips at the right time to see this drop. Thank you for the video and nothing but the best of luck with your health
Thanks and I hope you enjoy it!
Managed to finish it on the second day. I had very little knowledge of this series but I know a TON about inafune so I knew it was a bad sign early to find out he was so closely attached to this series. It's a shame that one man, with such a twisted view of the direction gaming should head could be in such high power for so long.
I now know so much more about this series and would love to see it make a modern comeback as unlikely as that is. This is the exact time for such a dream to come true, but fans of the series really do have to look elsewhere to find anything in the same vein. I hope that new Capcom game does really well and at least gives us an amazing sengoku-fantasy action adventure.
Not only that, but as soon as you described the gameplay cycle of the first game my brain immediately went "OH SO THATS WHERE WE GOT DMC AND GOW" it's crazy this series doesn't get that recognition for pioneering what is essentially an entire genre. Maybe one day I'll emulate these games, but most likely I'll just leave my experience with this series as a very fun and informative video essay by the video-essayist video essay creator to ever essay a video.
Thank you for all your amazing videos and I very much look forward to seeing you in the next one, you got this man!
Hey man, just to say it is an incredible feat of perseverance and passion to deliver content such as this while enduring the absolute misery that health issues such as yours take upon a person. A huge amount of respect for the research, capture, editing and producing that goes into long form video essays such as yours. You are a master of your craft, and continuing to release your work in the context you are is both a testement to your skill and your drive. Thank you for the consistently excellent content, and I wish you all the best with your ongoing fight.
Thanks my friend that means a lot to hear. This video was absolutely brutal to put together and I'm so pleased it's finally out. Now just to focus on getting through my treatment plan and hopefully this will all be a nasty memory in the past!
45:17 Actually playing with the kunoichi relieves a lot of my built up tension
Thank you for such a huge and detailed retrospective. Amazing work! Good luck with the ongoing battle. Remember to have fun and give your body the energy and rest it needs. Good vibes!
Thanks for watching and for the kind words my friend. It really does mean a lot to me
You are a saint!!! Thank you for putting this out while dealing with your health issue's. Rest up and get better!
Thanks my friend - I'll do my best
Thanks for putting out this video. It's delivered in a calm tone which sets the channel apart. Analysis is fantastic too
Thanks my friend I appreciate that a lot. I always try to make the videos chill which I know isn't really the done thing on YT but I really enjoy!
Great in depth retrospective as usual. I love how much history you go into from not only the games development but the circumstances that might lead to certain decisions in development. Your hard work really shines through just in your well thought out scripts but I have to give you even more credit for getting through a lot of the tougher parts of games just to give an honest analysis and opinion of what and why something might not have worked as intended.
Onimusha was always a series I was aware of when growing up and I remember seeing ads for Onimusha 3 in game magazines when I started to actually be interested in keeping up with game news. I thought it looked pretty cool but never ended up getting it since I was still a kid with a limited budget and could hardly remember every game I wanted to try whenever I would go to buy one. I did get the chance to briefly play Genma Onimusha and got to experience that difficult game for the first few levels before giving the game back to a friend I borrowed it from. Never did get to finish it but I was even more interested in giving the series a better look after that. Unfortunately life happens and I haven't had the chance yet but I'm more than happy to experience the games through your video. I was never one to care about spoilers anyways. If anything I want to dig into the games more myself one day, though possibly I might look for a Japanese version of the last one translated to English or something because that difficulty/grinding sounds brutal in the NA/EU versions.
I know you're going through you're own struggles with cancer and with even making this video but I appreciate what you do. You're videos have really give me some respite from some of my own problems. Even more than just an escape though, your videos have changed how I view video games in general. I can better think about what I do and don't like in games. I'm even thinking about what kind of games I would make myself.
I've always believed video games are their own art form and deserve their place in history. I think you do an excellent job of encapsulating and preserving the history of behind all the works you've covered. I appreciate not only the entertainment you provide to me and thousands of others with your videos but also the significance of it's documentation of pieces of art that isn't always well kept. From the bottom of my heart, thank you.
You're more than welcome. That's such a thoughtful comment which I feel really understands what I'm trying to do with these videos.
Given how popular the "super long video" meta is at the moment it can sometimes get me a little down as I really am trying to preserve the legacy of some of these creators and games. It's amazing to hear that for some people it's working and that there is a way to remember and experience them - and hopefully eventually play them - which I highly recommend you do with Onimusha!
Absolutely cannot wait to go through this. Been wanting to jump into this series for a bit.
Hopefully this encourages you! None of them are very long so you could easily finish the entire trilogy in a weekend!
Get well soon My bro please stay safe.
Thanks my friend I really appreciate your generosity. Fingers crossed that the test results are good and that the surgeries go well!
@IFinishedAVideoGame no matter what happens you made a positive inpacked in this world I will keep you in my prayers bro God bless
This channel really is on a totally different level to so many other "retrospective" channels. Excellent work as always, stay healthy and happy.
That's super kind of you to say. I just try to keep to the things I want to talk about and so far it's been really nice to see people want to come along with me!
You've easily become my favorite videogame RUclipsr. Your in-depth analyses are nothing short of perfection. I can only imagine the amount of time invested on research. Kudos to you.
With that said, I really hope you will beat cancer. I certainly am looking forward to seeing your next vids.
Thanks my friend that's super kind of you to say. I think I've still got a lot to improve about my videos but I think I'm starting to settle into a groove. Now I've just got to focus on getting healthy so I can go back to my old schedule!
Really enjoyed the background stories given on the various actors that participated in these games, that's the kind of extra research that sets this channel apart.
Thanks my friend. They're easily my favourite bit to put together
10min in, i like the shots at inafune A LOT
I really wanted to avoid this turning into a hit piece on Inafune but I've got to be honest - his ideas as his career progressed became really weird and very much not to my tastes
@@IFinishedAVideoGame hard agree. But i still love lost planet and dead rising 1.
GL dude.
If you ever do a Mega Man piece you can likely rip into Inafune a lot more, lol.
I don’t normally comment on videos, but I just want to say how incredible these retrospective you produce are, for me they are the best most interesting and detailed video game videos on RUclips, you are fantastic at your job. I wish you all the very best in your battle with cancer, hearing about the support you have around you I am sure you will overcome. Keep your head up high sir.
Thanks so much. It's been really great to see all these nice comments after such a rough few months. Hopefully I can get some good news from the doctors and then focus on getting my life back on track!
I have a tremendous respect for the Onimusha Series, the 2º game was my first Ps2 video-game, I did not even had a memory card and can't count how many times I started the game over. I wish there was a remaster for PC, there was so much I know I missed from the game. Thanks mate for doing this retrospective, It's such a magic series and they mean so much to me.
But above all else, I wish you the best in your fight. Stay strong mate!
Thanks very much! I can't imagine how hard it must have been to beat 2 without a memory card!
The series that was doing soulslike before Dark Souls was a wet spot in Miyazaki's trousers.
I really wanted to avoid making that comparison because it's a bit overdone these days but - yes you're completely spot on. It really was doing the whole skill based action progression thing!
Hope you're feeling well big homie, excited for the vid
Thanks my friend I appreciate the kind words
Wishing you all the best, man. I know you can beat the cancer.
Looking forward to this one.
Thanks my friend. Let's hope for some good test results and that I can have the surgeries nice and quickly. If that's all I need at this point I'll be overjoyed
Sorry to hear about your condition. Please take all the time you need and relax. We will always applaud your efforts, no matter how things shake out. This video is a work of art and you can bet I'll be coming back to it as a comforting, exhaustive retrospective on a beloved series.
Thanks so much. Fingers crossed it'll eventually just be a bad memory in the past!
As much as I'd hate for you to stop, please take care of yourself. Be strong, and never stop treatment, as hard as it is
The fact you still managed to complete this retrospective despite recent developments says a lot especially when nobody part of this community would've begrudged you had you decided to put it on hold indefinitely or scrap it outright.
I sincerely hope the upcoming surgery goes well and you're able to get back the quality of life you had before.
Thank you very much my friend. It was a very tough production and I've mentioned a few times in these comments - I did come quite close to abandoning the project a couple of times. Ultimately I'm glad I stuck it out and I think I'm happy with the final video.
I just hope it has some legs and can see everyone through to the next as when that comes is really in the hands of the gods!
@@IFinishedAVideoGame a will as strong as oda nobunaga . Hope you are doing ok
Hey man, just wanted to drop my usual thank you (you continue to release the best retrospectives on RUclips) and please know I'm praying for you. Hang in there, man.
Thanks very much my friend
Sorry to hear about your diagnoses, hope you make a quick recovery. Thanks for all the video content, ive learned a lot from these and replay them often.
Thanks very much my friend. That really means a lot to hear
Onimusha was one of my favourite game series back in the 2000's, shame that it died off and now fallen into obscurity.
However, I do feel that Koei Tecmo's Nioh 1 and 2 does feel like it's a spiritual successor to Onimusha's legacy.
I keep seeing people recommend it in the comments - I might have to do a stream of it one day!
Welp, looks like I'll be waking up to this the next couple months 😂
I haunt the dreams of everyone who's ever watched RUclips at night
Thank you for giving us so many great videos over the years! Always educational and always interesting. Praying for your good health and swift recovery.
Thanks my friend! I really appreciate it
Amazing video, Onimusha is a gaming legacy which deserves far more recognition and this is a fitting tribute. I truely hope you get better soon pal.
Thanks very much my friend!
Speedy recovery good sir! We are all rooting for you!
Thanks so much my friend. That's very generous of you and really does go a long way to helping me during this time
Really sad that they did not finish remastering the rest of the games in this series.
No way, just yesterday I was watching your Indiana Jones video for the 5th time and wondered when the Onimusha video will be released :) Best news in months!
It took about two months longer than I intended but I finally got there!
I absolutely loved this series. I remember hearing Jubei jubei!! As a kid it scared me but also made me want to conquer my fears.
Honestly that is burnt into my mind as well - the voice acting is pretty wild!
Onimusha Dawn Of Dreams is such an underrated masterpiece
Dawn of Dreams was so good. Easily in my top Ps2 games
I think the Japanese version might well be one of the best late stage PS2 games - but the PAL and NTSC version, I've got some big issues with it!
Oh wow that last bit really got to me man, and can only imagine how much a toll that puts on you and your family.
We only chatted once via your Metroid video, and I gave you all the praise in the world, and that hasn't changed. While I am still catching up myself financially I do plan to support, however....
I'm a video editor, and graphic designer, and while I haven't attempted to gather a large following on my RUclips channel yet, because this is a personal account, you can view some videos I've done, especially my newer Run With Us video, not the old one. I have garnered millions of views and likes on Facebook, and a massive amount of upvotes on Reddit, and fully capable. I would love to edit one of your videos for free just to say thanks, and to make your load a lot less.
Your writing and commentary alone is what keeps me tuned in, and I'm sure that's a massive amount of work.
It would be an honor to edit a video. I actually find joy in it and it is quite therapeutic for me.
Either way, I send nothing but love for you, and hope for positive news and a fast recovery.
I really appreciate the offer my friend, it means a lot that you want to help out that much! Honestly - I usually enjoy editing quite a bit as it can be therapeutic after months of writing and research! It was just a bit hard this time because everything was constantly being broken up thanks to bad news / surgery and really was a slog that took way too long.
But please know I really appreciate the offer and kind words
@@IFinishedAVideoGame No worries! That was the first thing that popped in my mind that I could do to help! I hope the best for you and your family, and thanks for the great videos!
I forgot about the onimusha series, you have made me fall in love with it all over again, and it feels like I'm playing the game for the first time again😊
That's really cool to hear
Yess I've been waiting for this. I'm already rewatching it. I hope and pray you get better soon and that you can kick cancer's ass. I will have you in my prayers.
Thanks my friend. That means a lot to me
I'm surprised at the fact that Onimusha ever sold well. What does Onimusha (as a narrative) offers exactly? There's no memorable cast, mechanics, moments, anything! Onimusha was probably dead when the sequel came out the way it did.
EDIT: Oh no... what terrible news. Good God, I love what you do and they specific way you do it! And if you enjoy it, I want nothing more than for you to do it for as long as possible. I hope you the best moving forward!
You should definitely open a donation account (ko-fi or similar) somewhere, for those inspired in donating at least once and pushed away at the prospect of a monthly fee.
Thanks so much for your generosity. I've thought about opening a donation account but I'm always very self conscious about asking for money - it took me months to even set up a Patreon!
Japan trying to apeal to the west when what we really like is the japanese stuff.
Hey there. Just a silent fan. I was genuinely upset when I learned of your diagnosis. I love your channel. You and NeverKnowsBest are my absolute favorite channels to listen to.
I started watching about a year ago (?) shortly after your Castlevania retrospective was released and I am absolutely thrilled every time you release a new one.
Idk just kinda rambling. I just wanna send positive vibes. I’m rooting for you. You got this. You’re amazing and your content is too.
Don't worry about rambling at all. That was a really nice comment to read and I'm proud that you enjoy my videos that much! Hopefully I can turn around my health situation quickly and get back to making more of them!
Hey mate,
not the one to write comments but it feels appropriate for this videl. I hope you know that the vast amount off people watching deeply care about you and your wellbeing, telling by the comments I'm certainly not the only one. I personally wish you all the best, a lot of strength and a most swift recovery.
Thank you for all the effort and passion you put in your videos. I surely can tell you love the thing your doing, so keep it up as long as it makes you happy.
Hope this gives you some positive energy. See you in the next one!
Thanks so much my friend I really appreciate that. It means a huge amount to me and really does help give me strength
The more I learn of the behind the scenes from this era the more I feel I understand why modern Capcom seems so reluctant to revisit anything Keiji Inafune was associated with.
How he was so influential for so long is kind of baffling.
It really was a tough time for the company. They went to the brink of bankruptcy and he really seemed like the only person with a clear vision. It's just fortune for them that Resident Evil recovered and Monster Hunter turned into such a huge deal!
@@IFinishedAVideoGame I can't even say I dislike all of his decisions. I love the casting of Jean Reno. His weird insistence in partnering with foreign devs resulted in some games I truly love (I'm one of three living humans who adore the wife arm Bionic Commando). Those first couple Dead Risings really had something going on, etc.
But there's so many questionable choices, dead ends and asterisks on almost everything he touched.
It's true about RE and Monster Hunter. I'm not sure Capcom would be around still, not to the scale it operates at certainly, without them... and I don't think Keiji had much of anything to do with those becoming such pillars.
Dude. Take all the time you need to get better. One video every five years. If you go five years without an upload, I’ll unsubscribe. Otherwise, I’m here for the ride. Deal? 😊
Haha don't worry I don't think you'll ever have to wait that long unless I take on Final Fantasy or Legend of Zelda
I would say you have a talent for making lengthy retrospectives about games I have no knowledge of. But instead of talent I think it's more of the incredible work you put into it. Every time, it's a great listen and watch. Kepp up the great stuff! And don't worry about taking a break if you need it.
Thanks my friend. Honestly I agree - I'm not sure I have any particular talent but I am very good at putting the time in and trying to do these series justice!
Thank you for another awesome video. You very quickly became one of my favorite RUclipsrs especially since it was just a offhanded comment from another RUclipsr about you prince of Persia video that got me watching in the first place. Stay strong and keep fighting. We love you man and Thank you.
Thanks very much my friend! It really means a lot to still have you hear after all this time! I can barely believe how long ago that video feels!
I'm just glad to have shared any time at all being engrossed in our mutual interests. You have been a most erudite contributor to discussions about these games. Thank you.
That's really kind of you to say. Thanks very much
An amazing video, as always! I've only heard of Onimusha and seen it on shelves, it was amazing to hear what it was all about and hear the history of it!
Also, I'm so sorry to hear about your cancer. There are honestly no words. Now more than ever I wish that I had the funds to subscribe to your Patreon (I've loved all of your work, even if I haven't been commenting as much lately), but for now, I honestly wish you the best of luck and am crossing everything for you that this next line of treatment gets you into remission.
Honestly thanks for the kind words and for supporting the channel! That's all I can ever ask for and the response to this video has really given me a lot of strength!
I absolutly enjoyed the video as always. I am a big Fan of all sections, but always so happy that you also have stories of the developers, desingers and the scene over all. Wish you all the best and thank you very much.
It's my favourite part of doing this job!
Such a cool game from my childhood. I love learning about all the context that I was oblivious to at the time.
I wish you a speedy recovery. Your videos fill my days with long and delightful entertainment. The world will be worse for your absence. Keep moving forward.
Thanks very much. Hopefully we have some good news on the horizon with my scan results and surgery dates
Thank you for covering one of my top 5 favorite game series. I'll be watching and falling asleep to this over the next week.
You're more than welcome. Hope it brings some good sleep!
No idea about this game series, all i know is that this man is amazing at what he does and I look up to you!
Keep fighting.
Thanks very much my friend
Congratulations on the video, you're simply one of the best youtubers for retrospectives and game analysis. This video is really good.
My childhood included playing Onimusha 2, 3 and Blade Warriors, and I'm not sure it's nostalgia or just age, but I LOVED all of them. From 2's multiple characters and nice weapons to 3's dark realm, 2 characters and time travel, I would love to see a new or remade Onimusha. I also player the remastered Warlords, which I also enjoyed, but unfortunately we might not see more of Onimusha anytime soon.
Thanks very much! Hope the video wasn't too negative - I do love the series really!
Your videos are amazing! The documentation of all this art is really beautiful. Thank you so much for all of your effort. And beyond the history, the way you weave all of this information into such an interesting and coherent story is nothing short of genius.
Man! this one was good, I enjoyed every second of it and there still so much to chew on! Please do what you need to get well soon! I hope to have your continued work for years to come.
I really appreciate that. It's certainly hard to do and this one was particularly challenging - glad you enjoyed it and thank you for the kind words!
Been here since 10k subs and I just wanted to say you are honestly one of my favourite people on this platform. Your videos are filled with so much passion and effort and every time you release one, it is a special occasion. I can truly say I will come back to your channel for many years to come. You truely have created a legacy for yourself and touched so many thousands of people’s lives, you should be so proud of what you have achieved. You’re an amazing person ❤ we are all with you
That's honestly amazing to hear. It's so nice to know I still have viewers from those early days although I do quite like some of those videos so maybe it's not surprising! Thanks so much for such a kind comment - it really does lift me up!
My condolences about your health. You are such a hard worker and one of my favorite channels. Hoping things work out well for you, and take as much time as you need in the future.
Thanks my friend. I won't lie this one was really tough to get out there but it's been a real relief to know it's done - hopefully it should free up some mental space to take on everything else!
🔥 This is *THE* definitive video about one of my favorite series ever Onimusha 🔥
Absolutely great video! Watching your videos introduces me to a world of games from right before my time. I'm so greatful, and i wish you a speedy recovery!
That's really awesome to hear. Glad I can be the portal into that special time!
hope everything goes well for you, prying for you.
your videos have always been and will be ones that I'll listen to with how in depth you get with the story.
again, prying for your health man
Thanks so much my friend I really appreciate it
This was a fantastic video, i recently got into the onimusha series and this was probably one of my favorite videos you've done! I just wanna also say i hope you make a safe and healthy recovery, we love you man and were all here to support you! ❤❤🙏🙏
Thanks very much. That's really nice to hear
I hope you'll get better and beat this annoying cancer, your videos kept me conpany during my long days of lonely work.
Thanks my friend. I'm glad my videos could be there for you and thanks for doing the same for me
Again, another deep and interesting dive into a game series that I played here and there for the style and setting, but never was able to put my head around. Great work!
You're welcome and thanks for watching!
Another brilliant video 🥳 Onimusha is a game i picked up ages ago that i never beat it but fell in love with. This video brought me closure and now i want to experience the whole series myself lmao.
P.s Dont sweat the videos taking a bit longer (easier said than done), just focus on getting better. I think I speak for everyone when I say we do not mind waiting for your videos and think your health is priority #1. Feel better brother!
Thanks very much my friend! Luckily I think the next few videos might be a little easier to produce so I'm hoping I get some good test results this week and then I can slowly chip away at the next while recovering from my surgeries!
I'm so sorry to hear about your diagnosis. You'll get this man, proud of you
Thanks my friend. I really appreciate that
havnt watched this yet but really appreciate it, i recently played warlords for the first time so this is right up my alley, stay strong and know your work is some of the best of its type, sending love to you and your fam man x
Thank you my friend!
Your talent absolutely shines in these retropectives.
I build lego with my son with them playing. Such a good way to teach him about games i grew up with!
Brings me back to seeing a ps2 in action for the first time in the demon realm on warlords. Being absolutely mind blown that this is what video games could look like.
Thank you for bringing back memories.
All the best with your health, i look forward to more content ✨️
That's really sweet to hear. I'm glad I can be part of the lego building ritual - I hope it's introducing your son to some cool old games!
Your work is exellent definetly my most recomenned channel on youtube, and your videos have helped me out so much during long nights and longer days. I wish you a speedy recovery and all the support you can handle. You got this! x
P.S
I'd love to see you do a punisher retrospective.
Thanks very much my friend. That means a lot to hear
Thanks man. The level of work you are doing is awesome. I've rewatched your Metroid video three times these past two weeks and have been hyped out of my mind during this Onimusha video. Incredible work. Thank you so much for this dedication to craft.
Just thanks for everything man. From the bottom of my heart, thank you
You're more than welcome my friend. It really means a lot that you enjoy them this much!
I haven't watched the video yet, but I am very much looking forward to learning about another series I've never heard of! You've got to be one of the best video essayists on the platform. It's clear that you are passionate and caring with every topic you cover. Your attention to detail is immaculate, I especially appreciate how you always give context around a game's release, the people creating it, and the technology and state of the games industry at the time. Not to mention, the series that you cover tend to be on the obscure side, so you're doing important archival work by gathering all this information into one place. It's incredibly admirable.
Your videos have also been extremely helpful to me, personally. I have chronic insomnia and re-listening to your videos have helped me sleep ever since I found the Castlevania video a year or so ago (and I do mean re-listen, I can never fall asleep on my first listen because the information is too interesting). They're pretty much the only videos that have worked consistently for me and I've gotten close to a normal sleep schedule now thanks to them. So, thank you so much for creating them. I hope that everything goes well with your health, I wish you nothing but the best of luck, and I hope you know that the work you do is incredibly appreciated. Please take care of yourself and your health first, and take all the time you need to recover. I will still be here watching your old stuff!
As someone who has suffered with insomnia in the past (as is at the moment thanks to everything that's happening) this really warms my heart to hear. Thanks for your kind words and I really do hope you enjoy this video as well
I like how your retrospectives put the subjects in their historical context. The information about the industry surrounding the games is always so interesting.
I find it the most interesting part to write about for sure! Glad you do to!
Another amazing video, really really enjoyed watching it, super interesting.
Sucks to hear about your health issues, hope you're doing as well as possible with what sounds like a really hard time.
You bring a lot of joy into a lot of people's lives.
I really appreciate that. It's been super uplifting to see all the kind words from everyone
What an amazing video, wow. Thank you, man.
Sending you well wishes for health & happiness. My grandfather had skin cancer around 7 different times, it's rough. I'm just a stranger, my you're on my mind often. I hope you know that you've made a significant impact in this strangers life 🖤
Onimusha Warlords was one of those games that I came to own somehow, no memory of it, none of my friends had or played it, but I knew about it and always played it and went back to it, it is RE with a katana
I think the internet and it's web of constant, never ending content really disconnects us from our humanity, and it's a rare pleasure and treat to find a channel and person that still creates videos based on what they believe and truly think-- not how they can game the youtube system for views. It's ironic your name is matt, it makes me think of matthewmatosis. A fitting connection to make for a man who creates authentic videos born from passion and love. I'm rooting for you, too. Not like your family or loved ones are, I couldn't ever give you that level of love, but I can offer you an additional tiny spark from the tiny void from across the pond.
