  • Exploring the Texas Hill Country Overland Route with fellow Tacoma Enthusiasts from Fredericksburg to Mason......Passing Enchanted Rock, 100 Cattle Guards ( seriously ) crossing the James River in Mason and Ending the Trail at Castell General Store for Lunch.
The map we used was OnX and worked perfectly,
bit.ly/47N4hgQ OnX offers a 7 day free trial to explore their app.
I highly recommend downloading the route prior to going.......Cell service is spotty in much of this route. Surprising to me was that GPS in your mobile device works perfectly offline, even when the network is nonexistent.

This used to be called road-trippin’ . Overlanding is generally off road.

Nice Sunday drive. Love the Hill Country! Could definitely do this drive in a Prius though, including the river crossing.

I wouldn’t want to drive a prius through the river 😳

@@DadGoesCamping nobody wants to drive a Prius! The base model Prius could handle that overland adventure though. Y’all have some pretty trucks. Not dissing… was just expecting more of an off the beaten path video. Somewhere I couldn’t easily go myself.
None the less. 👍 I still enjoyed the video and y’all have some cool trucks!

@@ianwagnerunplugged Texas is not Utah/Colorado/New Mexico/Nevada etc.....the majority is private land/ranches. Of course it does not compare to "overlanding" South America or Australia. It's a route that someone has researched and verified that should you choose to explore it, you won't get shot. There's not much FREE federal land in Texas, so just appreciate it for what it is and what it isn't. If I pass you in your prius with a roof rack and a huge roof top tent, I will still kindly wave :D

Hill Country Route would be a lot greener in April or May....................Dirt roads cropdusting my windshield muted the colors a little, but the Texas Hill Country was absolutely beautiful.

Did this route today with my Crosstrek Wilderness but I stopped at Star S ranch right before the river, I'm a first time overlander and was too scared to go over a large body of water

Im planning to run this sometime in July. Been wanting to run the trail for awhile and I have a Forester Wilderness. As long as the water is a few inchs below the Subaru emblem you should be good

its kinda funny that driving on Texas backroads/county roads is called overlanding. I mean, i love the backroads but... ive got a low water crossing like that 2 miles from my house.

    • @DadGoesCamping
      @DadGoesCamping  Месяц назад +1

So much land in Texas is private property…. Large ranches etc…. Not alot of open country unless you’re in far west Texas.

I did this route alone the opposite direction from Roanoke Texas two years ago on MLK day. That James river crossing was a bit unnerving, LOL - I got out and walked it and nearly turned back, but here came a local woman in a truck with her dogs. She stopped and I asked about it, she said just stay to the left (going in the opposite direction as her) I said, I almost chickened out until I saw you do it. She laughed and said, you'll be fine. It was a well over 600 mile day in my 2015 Tundra....just gotta make sure you don't end up on private property. Texas is the king of barbed wire fences

Taking this trip in a few days with our 2nd Gen Tacoma and 4th Gen 4Runner. Thanks for the preview. We're excited.
Did you guys complete the whole trail? If so how long did it take? Curious so we can make it out before sundown with the recent time change.
Also did you have cell service out there?
    Thanks.

Download a map before you leave Fredericksburg…. Cellphone service is very poor and nonexistent until you ou arrive in Mason. We stayed at the James river crossing for an hour and the trip from Fredericksburg to Mason took approximately 4 hours….. LOTS of deer so keep an eye on road.
