Great video! We stayed a week there in November several years back and loved it. We drove straight from ETX and boy... I did not realize once you hit that south gate you still have several hours before you even reach the ranger station. Its hard to articulate the peace and stillness of that place. The night sky was breathtaking and we had total privacy. In many of the sites you can bathe and do your business without seeing anyone else. Pro tip: Wind gusts can kick up violently and suddenly in the canyon camping areas. We had a hardshell rooftop tent that we faced into the wind and were fine, but the next morning we went to the ranger station to get some ice and 3 different families were leaving because the winds got so severe that they abandoned them to get in their cars and the winds blew their chairs and tents away. Be sure to bring long tent stakes and use your vehicle to shield your tent from those types of gusts.
Love that park. I had been to the National park and agree with the fact that the Ranch is far more rugged. I even was at the exact camp site a week after you guys. Great spot.
Pro tip: keep your PLB or Garmin Inreach within a bright colored mini Pelican case or even a cheap Apache from harbor freight in the glove box or compartment of truck. That way in a severe collision, there’s a much less chance of it getting damaged. On the dash like that is a bad place. Windshield is the worst but I’ve seen quite a few folks who mount them there. Looks cool up there, but actually getting saved when you need to use it looks cooler.
Last winter l was working in Terlingua and got to explore both the national and state Big Bend parks. The state park is definitely more rugged and challenging and the pinstriping your vehicle gets from the desert plants is brutal. The 4x4 trails are mostly unmaintained and rough and overgrown. It took several hours for me to get to a campsite across the park and l didn’t see another person or vehicle for 3 days. Probably the best and most remote campsite in Texas is located at BBR state park is Guale 2. It’s a wonderful drive to a remote and beautiful spot overlooking a valley. I was lucky to get a reservation for 2 nights there. You definitely need a 4x4 vehicle. A lot of people say this is the best campsite in Texas.
Wow, such an great trip and video! At 65 now, this reminded me of trips I've taken in the past. I'd absolutely love to do this trip. Those kids look like they are having an awesome time, and like you said, that's the most important thing. Lifetime memories there. Those holes in the ground at 31:09 are Dakota fire pits. The bigger chamber is where the fuel and the fire would be so it wouldn’t be affected by the wind and the smaller hole would come in at an angle into the chamber for air flow.

I camped at Pila de los Muchachos in 2020, if you type it into Google Maps you will see some pictures that I took, including one of my Nissan Titan at the campsite. Last December I camped at Chorro Vista, a bit further east from Pila and I highly recommend either of those.
I love the Ranch more than Big Bend. The Ranch is wilder and makes me imagine how life was lived back in the 19th century in South Texas. Plus, the stars seem to come alive there.

They’re both fun but if you’re looking for more in the offroad aspect, state park for sure. If you’re doing more easy sightseeing spots with your family that maybe doesn’t want to be so secluded, national park
I too prefer the state park over the NP in regards to rugged terrain and off-road experience. The Nissan is intriguing and a breath of fresh air when compared to all of the Tacoma's you see in this world of off-road exploration. We used to take an annual trip out to BB but we haven't made it the past few years, happy to report that we will be out there in late October to break that cycle. Very much looking forward to our visit and spending time in the truck versus the bikes we usually travel on. Thanks for sharing your travels.
You probably already fixed that mount for your radio, but putting a little felt sticky pad like you use for the feet of furniture would be a low profile and decently sound insulated solution to your rattling problem
Man I just cancelled my reservation for the Guale 002 campsite I had for February. Even though I’m pretty prepared I didn’t want to go way back there solo lol. Supposedly it takes 3 hrs to get to it. Definitely more rugged than the national park. Beautiful views though!
I camped at Guale 2 the first week in March for 2 nights. Don’t let fear deny you an amazing experience! I’m a 60 year old solo woman and drove my 2005 Jeep Wrangler there for an incredible 2 nights. Yep, it takes a few hours to get there. It took me longer to get to McGuirk’s Tanks the month before though. It’s not a bad drive. I had my dog with me. I tent camped and fortunately the weather was perfect. The drive there and back was awesome too. Probably the best campsite in the Big Bend area, if not Texas.
i think if i were buying a mid-sized truck right now, I'd get that Frontier. I've had Tacomas and Tundras but I like that Frontier's ol reliable drivetrain

That Subaru forester gave me an expensive headache with just 40k miles. Had an oil leak in a horrible spot that was gonna cost me a lot of $$. Was always dealer serviced and wasn’t even old. Got rid of it right away. Most unreliable car I’ve owned. I now preach to people not to buy a Subaru, especially the CVT transmission ones. You have been warned😆
