Whenever I see the abandoned houses and cabins, I think of all the work that went into the failed dreams.
Maybe the people that built it lived their dreams, and then next person that came around failed to maintain it.
It looks like the remnants of a beautiful success to me. By FAR, most homesteads were demolished or abandoned once actual villages and towns were established.
It is an amazing thing, to wonder about people that have been.
I was coming in to comment with a similar thought.
Maybe the original homesteaders lived out their lives as intended.

I use to call in the mines in Nevada, it was so interesting going 30, 40, 60 miles off road to visit a customer. Nevada is a special place. There’s more mountain ranges in Nevada than any other state.
Came to Northern Nevada 37 years ago and never left. They say to see the real Nevada get of the highway. Now you know.

Most people believe Nevada is just a giant desert but they never get to the splendor of the backwards. Nevada is the main reason I put in the 100 gallon fuel tank in the back of my truck. Having explored most of northern Nevada by 4x4 a must have is the Road & Recreation Atlas for Nevada. It will distinguish the dirt roads by difficulty level so you don't get caught on a road where you don't belong. That said, Nevada has almost the most (in square miles) accessable open land to explore in the U.S. Beautiful country!

It's always so much more rewarding to make your own discoveries. I frequently have people trying to tell me places I should check out, but I don't want to hear it. I love scouting the maps and seeing what happens when I get out there. 🙂

Thank you for sharing this wonderful trip. That lakeside campsite was the icing on the cake. Gorgeous and serene. It’s exactly the type of place that we hunt for when we go exploring. I’m antsy to get back to doing this but our exploring is on hold until the love of my life publishes his book on Gravity “Why Stuff Falls Down”. I’ve been editing it and we are now waiting for a proof to arrive Monday. Yay!
After everything is OK’d I want to get out into the wilds again. Which is ironic because we actually live on 45 acres of wild forest. I think seeing new places is good for the soul. Adventuring is exciting. That, and for me it means new things to paint and draw.
Donald, brilliant video footage! I lived in Nevada for over 25 years and loved northern Nevada the best. So many great places to see, looking forward to your next Nevada adventure.

That lake was awesome, I oohed and awed and maybe whimpered just a little watching those raising trout. Couldn’t help think with the remoteness of that lake how willing they might be to take a fly..

There are loads of overlander's that I have drifted away from for various reasons but you and Destination Adventure stick with me, you both camp like I do, travel like I do and enjoy very similar things out there...as I do. Haha to be honest I do genuinely enjoy driving and filming the occasional off-road-y obstacle that gets in my way. I wouldn't want to do that all day long, but tackling a few challenges here and there is fun. I normally would have captured more of that on this trail, but being up above 7,000' was definitely impacting my energy level. :-)

Welcome to Nevada😀 I like to think of it as the lower 48’s mini Alaska. Filled with endless mountains & valleys without the extreme cold temperatures.

I lived in NV 24 + yrs and did alot of off roading all over NV and loved it and I miss it now but I will be going back soon you've inspired me 😊
Nevada is a place where you better have good maps. Signs are few and far between if there ever where signs to begin with. I have spent hours going the wrong way and having to backtrack. Love Nevada back roads!
I’m wondering if a physical gazetteer would be a useful accompaniment to Gaia or OnX. I find paper never needs batteries or a signal.

I have traveled on several backcountry roads in Nevada. Checkout the towns of Midas and Tuscarora. What a hidden gem that lake is where you spent the night.

Excellent Video...thanks. I'm pretty sure that I've been to that lake and I stayed in the same campsite that you chose. Last time there, I made the drive in my lifted Subaru Forester. Now I have a Taco with a shell on it. I'm planning to visit again in a week or so. There's also another similar reservoir not far from there but that road looked pretty bad so I didn't try it. That Lake looks quite a bit higher than a few years ago. There's some interesting mining(?) gear over by the dam. It IS a long way from anywhere.
I originally planned to also check out the next reservoir, but this had turned into such a long day with so much filming (I did the gorge hike that morning before driving up into this area) that I was exhausted and ready to stop. 😄 It was so beautiful and peaceful, it was not a hard decision.
People totally underestimate rural Nevada. Once you get out of the Las Vegas region and the Reno/Carson region, it's primarily open land. The high alpine zones are gorgeous and the open desert is beautiful and mostly empty.
I am already eager to return and explore more. Underrated state for sure.
Thank you for not revealing your trails. We rode past the truck that slid off the trail in June on motorcycles. The snow bank was gone so this closes the case on how it happened. It was exactly what we thought.

A good wine with some food by a good camping spot of an amazing lake side, it is your rewards (I wish i could enjoy this view there). A Nissan Pro 4x4 make you much easy to travel such a terrain compared to your Subaru. I still remember you had a camping trip with a Toyota Camry.
The Camry Camping trip was so much fun. Lucie is currently driving that same Camry around while we look for a vehicle for her. Might see some of this on the channel maybe. 🙂
