Just getting out and enjoying the scenery and the serenity is reward enough. I am heading to Oregon next week to visit my son and his family. On the way home my wife and I plan on exploring, too. First stop will be Christmas Valley. Next stop is in limbo because of the fires. But I have a backup plan. I know I will enjoy our days exploring central and eastern Oregon. Thanks for setting the mood for me.

The drop zone in the new Nicolai OHV park was my father in law's hunting camp for at least 30 years before I met him 30+ years ago ;-)
The workers were heard to gossip about how nice the little crapper was (removable bucket, but real toilet seat), giving it much use before finally destroying it too.
All singletrack/quad trails were re-routed and the old ones blocked off with boulders and scree, though. All our scouting was made very difficult and everyone sort of gave up, as people don't quit riding during hunting season.

get a used gopro for almost nothing and get another used gopro for almost nothing when you destroy that one
why risk your 600 USD phone (on average) when you can get a good enough action cam for random footage for like 40 bucks USD
you'll want a cheap usb drive of sufficient performance and size to back up the vids you want to keep and YT is free so you can upload straight up garbage and deal with it there, using their storage (you can always download it if you want to save or edit it). Since the camera I have rn already pumps out a standard movie file along with the raw output file for every video (I'm sure there's some way to suppress it and I'll probably do that when it gobbles up all the camera storage)
I see people smashing cameras all the time in Clatsop/Tillamook forest videos and while the footage is not the latest and greatest it all has image stabilization, etc, now so it at least looks okay in playback on pretty much anyone's videos no matter if you just threw the camera on the dash and didn't know it was on.
I finally got one and just riding around in Oregon you're almost guaranteed nice visual footage, city or wilds. I tested it yesterday out of the box in the parking lot of the dutch bros here in halloweentown and all I got was mostly clouds but man they looked REALLY good lol
Post all your videos to your own social media profiles, including linked in and reddit, nobody obeys the rules anymore and free publishing is free publishing ;-)

The exploration for a camp site is just as enjoyable as the camp itself. In normal circumstances, the drive from point A to point B we developed tunnel vision. Occupied with driving the rig can't really look at everything. I, I stop and get out and walk around. That allows me to view areas that I would .

Not sure when you are planning your get together, you said a couple months. If it is during hunting season there is a good possibility that all those places will be filled up with hunting camps. When I use to hunt years ago, it was always a challenge to find a camp site. Even a few days before hunting can be difficult. Fun riding along looking at sites though. Good luck and thanks for the video! George.

I need to get out to the PNW. Being a born & raised Bama Boy in the southern Appalachians, the whole environment is just amazing and interesting to me. I watch your channel and Jason's channel and know that the chances of ever getting to camp in those area with my rig are astronomically low, so I guess that I live vicariously through you guys. It would take close to a week. each way, to drive out. Then I would want at least a week to explore, and even then, I feel like I would leave, wanting more.

@@softroadingthewest You should try being on the East side of the Mississippi River! Very few places left over here that are public land with enough gravel roads to even consider it worthy of overlanding. We have the Georgia Traverse that runs all the way across North Georgia. We also have the Smoky Mountain 1000 and the Smoky Mountain 500. Other than that, there are not a lot of options for overlanding.
I am currently working on the transformation of my hand-me-down GMC Yukon from a "mom-mobile grocery getter" to a mildly capable overlanding rig. I have to keep several things in mind. I cannot take away too much from highway performance, as I have to drive this truck a lot to haul kids for my job as a high school Agriscience teacher. Yet, I need it to be comfortable for camping.

I'm currently due to change my oil, so next time I'm able to fiddle with the truck, that has to be the priority. And then in a few weeks I'm leaving on a weeklong expedition and it's just going to get dirty, so I definitely will not be wasting any time cleaning it before that trip. 😏 Look for it to be clean sometime in 2025 at this point. 😂

      @softroadingthewest  20 дней назад +2

I can't begin to express how happy I have been with this setup. It works so so well for me for so many reasons. It's funny you ask, because while hanging out at this campsite, I also filmed a video about the things I wish I had done differently with the camper build, so you will see that soon. 😄 It's all pretty minor and superficial though, and just a few bad/cheaping out choices on my part vs anything inherently wrong with the setup overall. For what I do, it's really about as close to ideal as I could hope for.
I'm actually currently more focused on making a few changes in the cab of the truck, it's been a complicated summer and I haven't got as far along on that project as I hoped, but might have something to show in a couple of months. 🙂

I think I went to 34 here. Which I believe is technically the stock street pressure for this truck, though I normally run at 44 on pavement. That will all depend on the specific vehicle, weight, the tires themselves, etc. I more typically go down to the low to mid 20s when I'm going to spend all day on forest roads, and drop further when traction is an issue. Enjoy SE Oregon, it's a truly wonderful area!

Yeah I hear you. Summer is doubly tricky because I just don't enjoy being out in summer PLUS I like to take advantage of our few non-rain months here to work on truck projects, since I don't have cover the truck can fit under...once the rains come, it's really a headache to work on the truck. In fact I just spent this entire weekend working on the truck, yet more days I didn't get out and explore. 😏 RUclips is punishing however if I don't get at least one video out per week. I can't afford to just skip weeks I'm unable to get out of town, I have to get _something_ released weekly. But I certainly don't expect everyone to watch every video. 🙂 The good news is: I'm headed out soon on an interesting weeklong adventure, which should yield a nice series of episodes in new places. The bad news (for you 😆) is: I definitely will need to make one more video about Lucie's car quest as I keep getting questions about it 😄 and I have already filmed at least one other non-adventure video in order to have enough content until I return from my the next trip. Fall/winter videos should be largely much more out in nature! Thanks for watching whatever you watch!

I actually don't usually have a problem with the handle on mine, the little silicone sheath is adequate, but here I was f*rting around with the camera and it sat there boiling for a few minutes and gave the handle a chance to heat up. That's why I was surprised and had to go looking for some additional protection. I normally grab it bare-handed with no issues. The really weird thing is that for all the incredible tech we now have, we still rely an awful lot on plain ol' fire LOL

I license all my music via a service called Epidemic Sound, and I don't know how widely available the music is via other platforms, though often these artists can be found on Spotify. I've gone back and added the music credits for this video, you'll find them in the description above ^ (expand the description and scroll to the bottom). I can try to start doing this again. Ok, maybe it is only is the high contrast portion, like in your truck while bright outside.
      Not sure.
Don't spend too much time on it! Keeping hunting instead.

So the weird thing is that I actually pushed the saturation and contrast MUCH harder than usual on this video. The original rendered video file I uploaded looks MUCH more punchy and vivid. I really noticed this time around how much flatter it looks on RUclips. I know RUclips processes and compresses the uploads (my original files look MUCH MUCH cleaner and sharper than than the mushy compressed garbage RUclips churns them into) but I do think the color is indeed taking a hit as well. I'll keep fiddling with it.

The audio is always terrible when you’re in the cab of your truck. Couldn’t continue watching.
