I live in Washington state and I don’t even shop at the off-road stores. Too expensive, Amazon and harbor freight are amazing. Thanks to your episodes.
I can vouch for the rock lights. I bought them and installed them on the rear bumper of my Colorado. I use them to brighten things up when I am backing up and when parked at camp. Works good for the money.
11:15 HEY! Read this! I was given a survival kit (presumably from Amazon) with tons of goodies in it. One of the things was a 3-in-1 knife: glass breaker, seatbelt cutter, and knife. Mr and a buddy wanted to test out the glass breaker and seatbelt cutter on some junk cars (at my work). The knife was sharp, but the seatbelt cutter didn’t work (the blade was straight instead of being mounted at an angle like in a letter opener). The glass breaker DID not work. Both of us wailed on a few different pieces of auto glass with no result. The only result we could actually get was the flattening out of the metal glass breaker tip itself. If you have any survival stuff, like this, go try it out somewhere (responsibly) before your life depends on it. That is all.
Another thing to look for if you are getting a knife with a glass breaker is make sure its not just one metal all the way to the tip. Those usually end up like what happened in your scenario. You'd want to look for a carbide tip (usually a dark brown/tan color) or some form of hardened steel. I wholeheartedly support going to some place to make sure your glass breaker works. Some junkyards may allow you to break some of the glass on car windows, some you have to pay, some dont care. Stay safe!
I'm getting back into the overlanding thing. This video was very helpful. I have no plans on rock crawling. Just some backcountry adventures. Mostly doing some hiking and enjoying the experience.
Hey i wanna add to the fire extinguisher thing. Keep a fire extinguisher in your off-road vehicle regardless of if you intend to start a fire. You’re working your vehicle (typically) harder than the factory intended and that (along with other circumstances) could lead to a vehicle fire. Keep your fire extinguisher within your reach and always have an ABC rated extinguisher. That will extinguish combustibles, flammable liquids, and electrical fires.
If you are going to go the hammock route I’d recommend an underquilt. When using a normal sleeping bag in a hammock you compress the filling on your back and it doesn’t work well with the wind under you
Handful of haters in the comments. I have done 95% of my tool shopping at HF this year slowly setting up my work tool box but never actually looked at anything else but the hand tools. Pretty cool tour without having to walk around. Good video. P.s don’t use the quin snap ring pilers. They break before the snap ring opens. My only complaint.
(I work at harbor frieght) we also sell a 60 inch farm jack, it is just kept in the back. I prefer the longer length for using the jack as a makeshift winch, also for burying in the sand as a winch anchor.
The Apache boxes work great. Been using the 4800’s for years now. We use the road shock lights in all sizes and they are great however we are picky on lighting temperatures and stick to 6-6500k. The road shock cubes with the side lights are pretty yellow and are more like 5-5500k. Just fyi.
Don't sleep on the other 12k winch they offer. The newest model of it has almost the same specs and you can make it wireless also with a wireless module they sell there all for about $200 less than the badlands. I bought it on sale and swapped in 100 foot of high quality synthetic rope in it for less than $525.
Something i always keep in my vehicle and in my bags....glow sticks. Take em out of the package, bend til they snap, shake and voila.... These are very inexpensive and with Halloween coming up, can find these in multicolor packs. These are not only great for emergencies, but kids love playing with these.
Thanks! Some great ideas and who knew Harbor Freight rules. BTW a buddy turned me on to some super nice flex head ratcheting wrench sets they have @ $29 that are perfect for 99% of wrench needs. Flex head means they are gonna fit the weird angles you need.
Something you didn't mention was the air compressor that connects to your battery. I got one a few years ago and for the price it works great. Never had an issue with it in the handful of times I've used it
I own that 4 1/2 lb axe. I'd unwrap and inspect the blade in the store because they are of varying quality and I would especially inspect the handle. It is a very heavy axe and will tire you out really quick if you are remotely out of shape or don't cut wood often. I honestly think it is more of a felling axe than a splitting axe but it will split some fairly large logs (18 inch long x 8+ inches) really easily in a single stroke so it's overkill for camping. The 2nd gordon knife looks a lot like a knife kershaw made back in the day called the breakout (I still own mine)
The winch is a life saver, we have put those things to the test and our only failure has been the the remotes. They don’t like being in puddles of water.
I've got that hammock. Works well, you can tell the material quality isn't up to par with my ENO but what do you expect for 15 dollars? My only tripe with it is the tree straps have very few loops so you have limited adjustment. The ENO straps are far better and worth the cost. On the generator front, for camping. Pick up an Inverter Generator with an ECO mode. These are incredibly quiet and fuel efficient. They aren't much larger than some of the big battery banks. They produce more than enough power for a campsite. If I was going out for an extended time and given my experience trying to go straight solar, I would probably borrow or one break down and buy one and take it with me.
Don’t forget HF has a pretty great lifetime warranty on most things. You bring the broken item in and swap it out. Done it with jump packs and they never gave me any guff
Idk about the soft shackles but I have used their steel shackles for years now pulling big oak trees out of the woods with our dozer. They get the crap beat out of them and they hold up great.
I own the Cen-Tech power station. As portable power, it's not bad. The compressor is just…okay. As far as jump-starting goes, it's crap. Spend an extra 10 bucks and get a Halo Bolt.
I love Harbor Freight, they’ve never let me down. If you’re buying Zip Ties, tape, gloves, toolboxes, dirtbike stands, razor blades, and almost everything listed in this video at the Home Depot or a regular hardware store you are totally overpaying and getting robbed. Power Freight for the win
my issue before getting all these is a front and rear bumper and roof rack. i know people are upgrading all the time. trying to find where those people are a pain
I knew last weekend I had forgotten to bring something when I was out camping. Now I know, forgot to bring tape measure to measure the distance between the trees to make sure my hammock will fit. Dang. 🤣

The ChiCom folder shovel (aka E-tool) is junk. Blade and hinge joint material on US model is much thicker better made quality. It’s also crayon eater resistant…. ; )
I would choose a Schrade knife as a budget brand. I carry Spyderco Salts these days, however, for $30ish… my 8 year old Schrade is still in great shape despite some paint wear.
This is decent starter for people who are just getting into this. This ofc is not ideal but it is better then nothing. And inspect all gear before leaving. Learn what stitching is strongest for straps too. This the advice I have to give after a year of offroading
Synthetic and steel winch cables both have their places. Steel is best for places with lots of rocks, trees, or mud that will tear your synthetic line up. Synthetic is better everywhere else. I wheel in Vermont where our trails have lots of rocks, trees, and mud to tear up winch cables.
