Technically, Jack Black's character's name IS Nacho if he's called Ignacio. "Nacho" is a pretty common nickname for Ignacio in Spanish speakers countries. And it's hilarious that the fat boy's name is Chancho (it means "Pig").
Maybe literally, but slang it's fatso or realy chubby. lol

The character of Nacho is actually based on a real-life person who existed in Mexico. I think he was a priest and he actually did become a wrestler in order to raise money for the orphans.
Fray Tormenta! A living legend, although if I remember correctly, he's retired from wrestling now.
@@ianrosenbalm6555Yes, he has retired. However, one of the orphans who grew up in the orphanage that he was supporting with his wrestling took up the mantle of the priest's in ring persona to continue supporting the orphanage.

The late, great César González Barrón, aka Silver King, aka Ramses, the wrestler with the golden mask in the movie. He was a true wrestler who tragically passed away after a wrestling show in 2019. He had a heart attack during his last match. Rest in power. Gone but never forgotten
Before Jack Black became the Kung Fu Dragon Warrior Panda (Po) and the King of the Koopas (Bowser), Jack was the lucha wrestler, Nacho Libre. I swear, any role that man plays turns to gold.

I have a Nacho Libre mask I bought in Guanajuato, Mexico. Such a funny movie! Just for your information "Nacho" is a nickname for the name Ignacio in Spanish. "Libre" means free in English. So the name of the movie is "Free Nacho" VIVA MEXICOOOOO!
Nacho Libre is a play on Mexican wrestling, which is called Lucha Libre. Nacho being the nickname for Ignacio of course.
Lucha libre, american, and japan have some similarities when it comes to luchadore has a mask.
Mask is a lucha libre tradition masks are colorfully designed to evoke the images of animals, gods, ancient heroes, and other archetypes whose identity the luchador takes on during a performance.
Sometimes if a wrestler slated for retirement will be unmasked in his final bout or at the beginning of a final tour signifying a loss of identity as that character. Sometimes losing the mask signifies the end of a gimmick with the wrestler moving on to a new gimmick and mask.
Alot of American masked wrestlers had masks so the promotion could put them in different matches on the same card. One with the mask and one without

Easily one of my favorite movies - its just so perfect. Based on a true story, too - a real life Mexican priest who turned to wrestling to provide for orphans; there are pictures of him online. A very entertaining and an endearing story, both in real life and on the screen.

Oh man, I really love that movie, I've had it for a very long time in my collection there is such a cool, weird, heartwarming story.
Nacho Libre is an obsession for my family. A good 70% of my dad's vocabulary is quotes from this fucking movie lmao. Its one of those movies that is so fucking dumb but it just has irresistible charm.
I'm amazed that there is no Nacho2. Jack could even get guys from WWE and AEW, RING OF HONOR, CMLL like Rey Mysterio Jr and his son Dominic "Dirty Dom" Mysterio to be in the sequel.

Nacho Libre is inspired on a real person Sergio Gutierrez Benitez aka Fray Tormenta (Fray Storm) who was a Mexican teacher and priest who enter Lucha Libre to help the kids at his orphanage
I remember reading that, when he was found out, he was afraid he’d be defrocked… instead he was commended for his ingenuity, and compassion.
I've only watched this movie once but I laughed my ass off the whole time.

I have been a wrestling fan since 1998. And I have to admit that NACHO LIBRE is my favorite wrestling movie⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐.
Although it is a parody comedy, it treats the world of wrestling with respect and admiration 👏.
Especially in the final fight against RAMSES (RIP Silver King).
I've seen the movie like 20 times. It's in my TOP 10 favorite comedy movies. Simply a perfect movie from start to finish ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐.

I never knew that this was based off of a real person. Look up Fray Tormenta or Father Sergio Gutiérrez Benítez. He's the real Lucha Libre Wrestler.
Jack Black also worked with rich kids in School of Rock, teaching them good old rock n roll/heavy metal history because JB is a true rocker with Tenacious D!
this movie came out when i was in high school. it was such a dumb movie and at the same time funny af i can still watch this til this day and laugh at it. me and my friends still quote everything in nacho libre with the accent too lol. this will always be a classic to me haha
Fun facts: the is a remake of a Jean Reno film called "The Man in the Golden Mask" and was partly inspired by *Fray Tormenta* ("Friar Storm"), aka Rev. Sergio Gutiérrez Benítez - a Mexican priest who became a wrestler to raise money for his parish.
-They used actual wrestlers to play the wrestlers.
-Ramsis was played by the late Silver King.
IMO the movie would have been a lot better, if they just made a movie about Rev. Sergio Gutiérrez Benítez.
His real life story is so much more interisting!

I recommend watching Napoleon Dynamite(2004) next. It’s got that similar subtle type comedy and it’s also directed by Jared Hess who also directed Nacho Libre.

i like how this movie is as far form Cherry's experience as say a Korean movie. Equally strange and interesting to her.
I learned from another reaction that nacho is a nickname for ignacio. And also, some Mexican wrestlers bka Luchador wear masks. And they have to wear them most of the time, even outside of the ring. I’m not sure why but that’s what I learned. It’s disrespectful to take them off too. One of my favorite wrestlers named Rey mysterio always wears it. The company WWE, made him take it off back in the day. Just to disrespect his culture.
She is the only one who has said about the similarity of this film and napoleon dynamite...since they are directed by the same director
