In this video, Did You Know Gaming takes a look at the history of speedrunnning, from the sport's early origins with Atari and Nintendo World Championships, through Doom and Quake, all the way to the modern day live-streaming and marathon culture with AGDQ, SGDQ, and Games Done Quick in general.

I actually got introduced to speed running from watching Games Done Quick, first watching Gymnast speed through Ocarina of Time. I don't have the skill or patience to speed run myself, but watching other people break some of my favorite games wide open is a joy to behold.

I'm part of their Marketing/Social Media team, and I want to say that we're still going strong! 2009 was the first week-long marathon we did, and we try to do one long marathon each year. We also do around two or three smaller marathons each year, too.
We'll be having our summer 2020 marathon later this year on our Twitch channel, so keep an eye out for that. :)

Interesting. I never knew that Metroid Prime was so crucial to Speedrunning's early days. I knew Super was important, but not Prime.
Yup, Metroid and Doom are basically the two series that kicked off speedrunning as a concept.
I highly recommend playing a Metroid Prime game and playing with the glitches and skips. They're incredibly clever, with execution leaving you to feel like you actually did something cool.
Speedrun or not, definitely try it
I feel like we've gone full circle with this video.
10 year anniversary of gdq too. The 2010’s definitely made speedrunning huge

There are some mistakes in the section about TASVideos… But meh, it’s an informative video I guess. Signed, Bisqwit - the founder of TASVideos. (No, I was not contacted for this video. I didn’t even know about it until some viewer contacted me and told me.)
ya
When going into TAS speed runs and mentioning Dragster at the beginning, I was hoping you might mention about the speed run controversy involving Todd Rogers and Dragster.
You could make a whole video on that probably.
I notice that they very intentionally omitted all mention of Twin Galaxies from the video, and that's how it should be. Those vermin don't understand the difference between positive and negative attention, just ignore them and let them shrivel away.
yeah, it doesn't really matter in the whole... if your making a 15 minute video about speedrunning as a whole as to be condensed
Todd rogers billy mitchell and the old twin galaxies crew need to decompose now theyve been buried. Speaking their names only breathes life into their pathetic beings.

Speedrunning is just so awesome and fun to watch. Don't think I could ever really do it, but it's so entertaining to watch everyone in the community. I went to SGDQ in 2019, and it was so much fun. Thanks to all the people to run the event, help out, etc, for such a great event.
So weird to see yourself in a video like this (I’m the goofy looking dude playing Wind Waker during the part about TheSpeedGamers).
TSG is still around! We do a few events per year and keep on trucking with the donations. A lot of us do personal streams too, so if you remember us fondly you should stop by and say what’s up!
Finally, when someone gonna ask:
*_"I don't get it, what's the point of speed running?"_*
This video is a good learning tool and answer to that question.
I don't know what it is, but it is the same as the point of competitive sport.
@@cube2fox It's really more collaborative, the majority of leaderboard people in a run category for pretty much any game are always more than happy to give tips and advice on their runs if you ask at the right time and right way. I know quite a few current/prior WR people and they say they always feel great when they watch the clips of exactly how their record was beaten, because it means there's still more to work on in the game and new techniques to learn. Speedrunning is one of those things where its only competitive when the game's effectively been "beaten", and its down to a few people squabbling over a half-second difference in record.
you can see people write that word in ign speedrun video
Still no point. Just cringy sweaty virgins

I had actually done many speed run races with my brother about 10 years ago. We used real consoles and CRT screens. Because those TVs are heavy, I decided to connect a second one to my game room since I already had doubles of consoles and games. It was great.
Would have been great to hear Summoning Salts opener on this doc 😅
Amazing video, this was so informative about speedrunning, I love history and also watching speedruns so this was perfect, well, almost, it should've been "The History of Speedrunning - Did You Know Gaming? Feat. gladJonas"
This year, AGDQ raised $3,132,422.78, which broke their previous record. I'm saying this minutes after it ended too, and I'm amazed, absolutely amazed. I'll keep watching speedruns for as long as they still happen.
Nothing against Remix, and I see I’m not the only one who said this, but SummoningSalt would have been perfect for this video!
Man, I knew Doom was a hell of a game but didn't know it had this influence on recorded demos that's amazing.
And GDQ has become less about speedrunning and more about banning anyone for nothing because its not following the hivemind.
Everything fun has becoming political platform shiet. Hate what is happening in West society
@@igodreamer7096 it really has. I'm just here for the fun of speedrunning

I was not expecting to see Desert Bus for Hope here but it was a pleasant surprise
Why didn’t summoning salt narrate this
This was great. With events like GDQ continually growing it’s great to see new waves of runners constantly entering the scene. I can’t wait to see where this is heading over the next 5-10 years
The lack of SummoningSalt as the narrator is criminal.
Well you know what they say, GOTTA GO FAST

Awesome story. You guys made the whole speedrunning scene seem to be a great moviment.
I was a semi-finalist in the 1990 Nintendo World Championships in Miami. I lost because of a screen error (it was black for an extra few seconds and I have a photo), but it was an awesome experience!
Wait, how does just a photo show that a screen was black for an extra few seconds?
*EZScape has joined the chat*
I don't speedrun, but I do speedrun tricks in some games either to show off, or because it's a better way of getting stuff done, like Bomb Impact Launches in BotW, it makes traversing Hyrule a breeze.
OoT speedruns are my favorite to watch.
I'm always impressed with id when I learn something new about Doom. I'm playing through it now on the Switch and it's impressive to this day.
Now that I've had a couple days to stew on it, I want to share some thoughts. Consider this as criticism of the research/journalistic aspects of the video.
First, I'm a bit disappointed I wasn't consulted at all for this video. Even just as a sanity check for the material being presented and to give a go-ahead on releasing the excerpts, it would have been nice to have a heads-up that this was on the way. I'm not hard to reach.
Second, I am a bit disappointed how little there is in the way of original or combined research. The vast majority of the flow and ideas were lifted directly from the History chapters in my book. This isn't an accusation of plagiarism, but it became a video summary of my written content and interviews when there are still other angles you could have investigated to provide something beyond what I describe in the book. I appreciate that you used my book as a reference, but there are plenty of other sources with information beyond what I was able to capture that are worth including as part of the coverage.
In any case, thank you for covering the topic and providing further exposure to speedrunning and its roots. It was an enjoyable refresher on the major milestones, and was fit for a general gaming audience that may not have encountered speedrunning before.
My favorite speed-run is when Toufool achieved a new world record in Diddy Kong Racing while playing for one of the GDQ’s. All the tricks, and glitches he performed and knew were outstanding to watch live.
And then, Narcissa Wright happened.
I grew up in the 80's and high scores were the big thing. I once walked into an arcade where a guy had been playing Asteroids Deluxe for almost 8 hours on one quarter. I guess speed running is now the new 'high score' these days.
Well score based games went out of favor once games were able to fit more than a few KBs of Game Data in them. Back then the high score thing made such games have more replay value. Youd be hard pressed to find a game with a score system outside of Sports games these days lol
And yet ADGQ has some of the worst management around...At least they are helping a good cause, but I wish they had a competitor so they couldn't have a monopoly.
There is the ESA (European Speedrun Assembly) that I found about recently that has some good stuff on it. Not sure how big it is in comparison to GDQ though.

I was hoping for a mention of co-op speedruns for games that are really long, like this year's run of Final Fantasy VIII, when they brought up the variations at the end. Otherwise, very informative and appreciated.

Loading ready run is chill as fuck! It's super cool to see their charity marathons played a part in speedrunning history and it's now vast array of charaity marathons
C'mon dude this HAD to be narrated by summoning salt
Also, since this video is playing Kirby 3 music I gotta say why I find it one of the more interesting TAS’s.
RTA time is usually from when you gain control of the character to when you e beaten the game and lost control.
TAS is from power on for the system to the last input on the controller (regardless if the game is actually beaten at this moment or not... just so long as the game becomes beaten).
In the RTA for Kirby 3 on the final boss you get a better time by controlling Kirby in phase three to kill the boss faster and get to the end credits faster.
In a TAS you can move Kirby to a certain position and stop pressing inputs because kirbys weapon has an active hit box at all times and the boss will kill itself while the TAS has given a few frames less to complete the run.
Basically a TAS is rated on its file size. As long as it completes the game and meets the conditions of whatever category is run it’s about optimizing the run by making the smallest file size that can do this.
I could never speedrun a game due to how bad I am.
But to all the speedrunners out there, I salute you.
Shiro-Luna With practice you can become great at those games
You can speedrun any game you like. A WR is a nice concept. But being able to outpace what you feel you can do is always a joyful experience.
The Call of Duty zombies community then made an event based on teams speed-running zombies map’s main quest against each other, where they streamed for charity and raised $200,000 one year.
next episode: the history of banned GDQ runners... we got enough of them now to fill an episode 🤣🤣
@Damian 2000 "The History of GDQ Bullshit" would be the title I would choose
History of the cringefest dubbed GDQ
That is something to look into.
Don't forget the time they took 40% of the donations as profit. The event has gone downhill over the years.
Chess Puppeteer source?
I really admire the amount of time these speedrunners put into their craft. It's truly insane. When I was younger I used to play Megaman X all the time. Whenever I was bored or had an hour to kill I'd turn it on and beat it; sometimes multiple times a day over several years. When I found out people speedran the game, I watched them play... even overlooking the strategies and glitches found by their community, the skill level of the top players put my gameplay to shame. I had already practiced the game for years, had most of it down to muscle memory, yet I knew I wouldn't be able to compete at the top level. That realization turned me away from ever becoming a speedrunner myself but I can enjoy spectating.

I love watching compilations of GDQ runs
The heck is a “x1” multiplier? Did they mean a x2 multiplier?
No, the game says x1 XD and they wonder why Tetris dwarfed the other two games score. x1 isn't a multiplier.
Presumably, if they didn’t get 50 coins, they’d have a 0x multiplier, but if they did collect 50 coins, they’d get exactly their point total
AGDQ Jan 2020 just hit over 3.1m final count still pending!

Yeah, you only needed 50 coins to pass to the next game. The vid wasnt very clear about that.
I mean wasn't the whole creation of Sonic based upon the creator beating Mario in the fastest way possible? So wouldn't Sonic the Hedgehog be the unofficial child of speedrunning. The fact that he also goes fast and 'runs' is something I find hilarious.
I think this led the way for 'time attack' in most games this generation. The most recent example I can think of is the official online levels of SMM 2.
