-Our Intro Song "Feel the Love" From Alex's band
open.spotify.com/album/4Dao8y... - Кино
Two years of waiting for this song. The day has come.
Dr. John was the boogie woogie master !!
I've read that Dr. John was the original inspiration for the muppet character, Dr. Teeth. And that's all you need to know.
The 1st time I saw Dr. Teeth, I remember knowing this! Haha!!
Sounds plausible
And Keith Moon inspired Animal.
I do believe you are right.
I’ve heard something about it in an interview decades ago.
📻🙂
Electric Mayhem suits Dr John. 😂😂
Dr John was the voice of New Orleans in his prime. In fact, his voice could be heard in many Popeyes Chicken commercials.
Love that chicken at Popeyes 🎶😋
I only eat Popeyes while I'm listening to Dr John (or maybe the Meters)...
Welcome to New Orleans Funk! More of this please. Just so you know, Dr John talks the way he sings. Quintessential Nawlins musician.
Always one of my favorites cuz he sounds just like my dad.
Speaking of New Orleans funk the band on this album members of Neville Brothers/ The Meters .
They should also hit
Meters - Cissy Strut.
Nevile Brothers - Fire on the Bayou
Mine too, old school upper ninth.@@jennbienvenue804
Dr Jaaaaaaaaahn
Add 'The Meters' to your checklist. They're backing Dr. John on this song, and the epitome of New Orleans funk.
Absolutely agree with this statement, Cyril Neville is one of my favorites. They should probably start with the Cissy strut, the meters claimed to invent Funk, and I believe they might’ve been right
This.
Absolutely. "Cissy Strut" must be done.
The Meters rule!!
😁
Cissy Strut. Classic from The Meters!
Dr. John is a genre within himself. I haven't heard this song in ages. Thanks for taking me back.
I was 10 yrs. old when this song came out, and living in New Orleans, our local rock station, WRNO, played this song _incessantly_ , but I never got tired of hearing it. It's on a level with Superstition by Stevie Wonder, in terms of having a funky ass beat.
New Orleans native here. I was 14 when this song came out. W-e're the R-ock of N-ew O-rleans . Keep on rockin', bro .
Don't forget 92.3 WCKW.
@@satanlaffing Yeah, I listened to Walton & Johnson, driving to work in the morning on that station.
Awesome, Now try Billy Preston : Will it go round in circles. As well as a great solo career, Billy played lots of legendary piano and B3 parts for bands including The Rolling Stones and the Beatles
Billy was considered the fifth Beatle.
Oh this!
They should also do "Outa-Space"
If you’re turning to Billy, first out of the gate for me is “Nothing From Nothing”!
And maybe a little Johnny Guitar Watson with A Real Mutha For Ya.
Love that New Orlean's funk! IMHO, Dr John and Leon Russell both possessed that seeming effortless delivery in their groove. And they were both Piano smiths. Have a great weekend Guys.
There's a duet Dr. John did with Rickie Lee Jones called "Makin' Whoopie" which is an old classic tune (I think it was written by Cole Porter or maybe Gershwin). Very fun song, and these two killed it. Dr. John's piano is real nice on this song, too.
"Makin' Whoopee" was written by Walter Donaldson and Gus Kahn. The phrase was originally a reference to marriage, and over time it eventually became a euphemism for intimate relations. It's been recorded by many artists, since Eddie Cantor first popularized it in 1928.
Speaking of Rickie Lee Jones, her "Chuck E.'s in Love" must be reacted to one day!
@@Skeezer66 Agreed.
I've suggested Rickie Lee Jones. I hope they react to her soon. What a raw talent. Anything from her self titled album.
Alex will enjoy her masterful lyrics!
I was going to mention his collaboration with Rickie Lee. Good call!
John received 6 Grammy Awards and is in the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame.
This is his highest charting song on the Billboard hot 100, #9(1973). #24 on the year end chart.
It actually peaked at 9 on the BB Hot 100.
I don't wish to discredit this artist for his induction into the R&R HOF, but when you have bands like the Doobies, The Smiths, Soundgarden, ELP, Kansas, Sting, not inducted, it makes most music fans scratch their heads. Besides, he's not even a real doctor! LOL
@@jonathanpeters5027 yup, I was looking at year end stats. thanks.
@@coyotecreekband236 When you consider that the RRHoF is total rubbish, and its selection process is pretty much who kisses their arse the best... I wouldn't use that 'institution' as a barometer of greatness. No Doobs, no Kansas, no ELP... but you ut in Donna Summer, Run DMC and Alicia Keys? Get the F outta here!
@@coyotecreekband236 Dr. John is Professor Emeritus of Funkology.
If you have spent much time in NOLA, you would've been familiar with Dr. John. One of a kind.
Such a Night - he played piano and sang on the Last Waltz, was great
What you're hearing its a true New Orleans accent. It is unique in America.
Would love to see some Rare Earth in here. Rock, funk, soul...I Just Wanna Celebrate!! (another day of living...)
So much good music left to hit!! Rare Earth would be a great pick.
The only rock band to sign with Motown Records. Great, Great rock band with heavy blues influence.
I thought of Scorpio by Dennis Coffey while listening to this.🎸🎶
If you want Dr John at his most New Orleans play” Walk on Guilded Splinters”
YES. They dont Know about Da Night Tripper!
Anything from Gris-Gris is amazing
The Doctor did some great studio/sideman work too - because he could play literally anything.
And while his more poppy stuff is generally better known, one of my favorite things in the whole wide world is "In A Sentimental Mood" (a bunch of the "old standards").
If you wanna see some roots - Dr John Plays Mac Rebennack
Good work today, guys.
I *love* that album (Sentimental). I wish that they would do him and Rickie Lee Jones doing "Makin' Whoopee" -- not only musically great but clever and funny.
This was the first song I ever heard in stereo, my Uncle had just bought a "stereo hi-fi" with earphones probably in mid 70's. Still remember that moment.
There's something timeless and cool about this song...such a cool vibe to it, and a great cruising tune as well.
If you want your mind blown, go back to his first album "Gris Gris" and check out "I walk on Gilded Splinters". I can almost guarantee it'll make your hair stand on end - some of the swampiest sounds ever recorded. No one goes deeper than Dr. John. And yes, I saw him live. First time in 1972, last time two years before his death. A consummate artist.
That’s the song I would suggest, also!
Voodoo Rock -- that Gris Gris album is a genre unto itself and one of the wierdest coolest albums of the 70s
Would love to see u guys finally cover some classic fun rock, like That’s What I Like About You, Hang On Sloopy, and Roll With the Changes. And on the funky side, Groove Is In the Heart and Love Shack. And when you get drunk, react to Rock Lobster. It resurrected John Lennox’s career. Fun songs and love songs are the very heart of pop music. Open ur hearts, fellas, and have some fun!
Agree, Hang On Sloopy!!
True, most reactors seem to think things got started in the 70s
Yes! Groove Is in The Heart was on my self-made Poll of happy but good songs for April Fools day.
Hang on Sloopy for sure and More today than yesterday by spiral staircases
Easy A+. This song came on Sirius while my wife and I were driving around and I immediately said this was a perfect song for you guys. I knew you'd love it.
Humble Pie’s Live at the Fillmore has a great 23-minute jam cover of his “Walk On Gilded Splinters” with several amazing Frampton guitar solos. If you’re ever in the mood for. 23-minute song. 🎸
Wow!! The whole Dr John catalogue is a grand trip, it will impress. Thanks guys.---Senior from Canada
Dr John was a brilliant New Orleans style funky pianist who appeared on many people’s albums.
I listened to this when I voted in the poll and enjoyed it, but watching you guys listen to it, I enjoyed it at least 3x as much. Funny how others' enthusiasm and enjoyment is contagious.
I didn’t appreciate this song until I saw “Dazed and Confused.” Now there’s a flick with a GREAT soundtrack, not to mention its depiction of teenage life in the 1970s. You guys gotta watch that!
They already reacted to it on Patreon.
It was also the opening theme of "Sahara". Not a bad movie, but the book was better.
@@youtpfpm6097 Aren't all books better? Sure seems that way to me!
@@catherinelw9365 Thanks. Didn’t know.
For more funky New Orleans check out The Meters, Lee Dorsey and one or two tunes by Allen Toussaint -- and some more Dr. John. And more Little Feat and War since so many of their songs have a similar vibe.
Zigaboo Modaliste laying down the funk on drums!
With the Meters as your backing band on this song… how could you miss?
Ziggy one of the baddest drummers ever!
I've never really been into funk, but the Doctor has always been cool.
Not many performers get immortalized as a Muppet Character.
I love David Spinozza's guitar solo in this one.
His heavy New Orleans creole accent plays a big part in his vocals and overall sound.
Dr John, the pride of New Orleans. Not the only one but definitely one of them.
"Iko, Iko" "Such A Night" "Big Chief" "Mess Around" "Walk on Guilded Splinters" "Mama Roux" are all great tunes done by Dr. John, among many others! The Meters are backing the Gris Gris King here, and are a giant bowl full of funk fun themselves! Ziggy Modaliste is responsible for the unbelievable drums on this song! One of my favorite drummers! New Orleans music should be explored deeply!
Yep, and maybe with Andy & Alex taking a side-trip to Dr. John's mentor, Professor Longhair, and his touchstone song "Tipitina".
NO is the musical capital of America. It's obvious once you go there. It's not LA, NYC, Nashville or Memphis -it's NO! Dr John is the coolest guy in music! I like 'Everybody Wanna Get Rich Rite Away' off of "Desitively Bonnaroo".
You forgot his version of Iko Iko...
@@daveveautour4886 First song listed in my comment is Iko!
@@tommathews3964 Damn my eyes!!!
"Right Place Wrong Time" heard in
" Dazed & Confused " (Emporium scene)!
Band on this album all members of
Nevile Brothers/ The Meters
Can't mention Dr John without mentioning New Orleans. Other NOLA artists to hit,
1) The Meters- Cissy Strut
2) Radiators- Like Dreamers Do
3) Nevile Brothers- Fire on the Bayou.
4) Galactic- Hey Na Na
Would love to hear some Neville Brothers!
@@JustGoBackpacking All musicians on "Right Place Wrong Time" are from
Neville Brothers & The Meters.
@@jgsrhythm100 Yes, but I really love the voice of Aaron Neville...
Galactic’s Paint is on my Greatest Unknown Songs list.
@@privatename123 Well not unknown to those that attend Jazz Fest or spend time checking music in NOLA!!! There they are legends amongst the others on the list.
Dr. John always has a groove going on.
I would like some more, please.
The rhythm is what hits me about this classic song. The starts and stops.....ups and downs...texture....funkiness.
How do you not love that voice? Hey Andy, that accent is called New Orleans. Not a choice my friend, not a choice lol. Damn that still sounds good after all these years! Guess that's what they mean by classic. Saw him at Taste of Chicago Grant Park 2005-ish. Stankin, bluesey, jazzy rock. Dude was one of a kind. RIP
My oldest brother and I used to sing that together when we were in the car together. He died in 81, thank you for that memory. I had kinda forgot about that song.
Speaking of "time", you should check out The Chambers Brothers - "Time Has Come Today".
Be sure and do the long version, not the radio cut.
Yes, PLEASE. I've asked a dozen times. I'm old and sick. I just want to see the boys listen to Time Has Come Today. Doctor John (Mac Rebennack) was a big hit in The Band's The Last Waltz.
Welcome to the club Ricky. I've asked for the Brothers a bunch of times. If we keep knocking they have to answer eventually right?
@@peterstilla8733 Well, there are a lot of songs out there so it can be tough. The best bet as of now seems to be to get people on Discord to rally it so it will show up on a poll. I'm never available during the poll building time.
I was gonna say the same thing...NICE!!
The legend of New Orleans. Rip John
Finally, I'm born and raised in New Orleans and on Dr John songs, in fact my mom went to high school with him. Suggestions, try "Wild Honey" and "Rain" from his City Lights album. Heavy New Orleans accent and also the voice of all the early Popeye's commercials, "Love that chicken from Popeyes"!!! Sadly, he left us in 2019.
Dr. John used to be a guitar player, but lost a couple fingers when a bar fight broke out.
Like Tony Iommi of Black Sabbath and Def Leppard's Rick Allen, he was determined to not let it stop him, and only hit it big after he switched to keyboards.
More from New Orleans!
Check out the Meters, the Neville Brothers and Professor Longhair for starters. It is a great rabbit hole to explore.
This guy was great. Who likes "walk on gilded splinters?" Either the Doctor's version or from Humble Pie's Rockin' the Filmore!
Widespread Panic rocks the hell out of Guilded Splinters too!
One of my favorite Dr. John songs is "How Come My Dog Don't Bark When You Come Around."
YES!
I remember we had this on the old K-tel album. 💕
Those were the best back in the day.
When you have the Meters as your band, the song is guaranteed to groove!
You gents just touched on my most favorite jam ever! There has only been, or ever will be, one Dr John. 😊 He just epitomized the music of Nawlin's, heart and soul, in all it's flamboyant style. So miss seeing him on a stage, doing what he did best, being so totally himself.✌
The first concert I went to was Deep Purple in 1972. Dr. John opened up for them. Two totally different music vibes but Dr. John was fun. Deep Purple? AMAZING !
Nice!
30 years later, I saw Dr. John open for the Stones, in 2002, in Chicago's Aragon Theatre--holds about 2,100 people. Bono came on half way through the show to join the Stones for It's Only Rock n' Roll (But I Like It). Unforgettable night or rarities in an incredible venue for the band.
Wow...what a contrast with music styles. Yeah, Purple must have been amazing! Machine Head tour, right?
Deep Purple was also my first live concert but it was in 1974, the Burn Tour. I just looked it up and it says the opener was ELO, but I have absolutely no recollection of that, which is strange.
@@bencurti7693 yes you are absolutely right .
BTW, the Bonnaroo festival got its name from Dr. John - from the 1974 album and song "Desitively Bonnaroo". The dude had massive influence, right up to and including the Black Keys. Dan Auerbach produced Dr. John's final CD, "Locked Down".
Dr. John is one of the all-time greats. His live shows were magical, mystical jam sessions that were just...beyond. I saw him at the Jambalaya Jam in Philly once in the 90s, w/ a 4-piece horn section, and it was one of the greatest shows ever.
Mac Rebenac, aka Dr. John "The Night Tripper", (RIP) brings the New Orleans Funk to his music at all "times". Guess he was also a fan of Emerson, Lake and Palmer, calling out Brain Salad Surgery, but he may have invented it. Who knows. This was his most famous song, but he has many more.
Just read above that this song came out 8 months before ELP's album was released. Cool story behind how they settled on Brain Salad Surgery
Dr John used it before ELP
I know 4 Dr. John songs & 3 of them I first heard in movies. Right Place, Wrong Time (Dazed & Confused), Such A Night (The Last Waltz), Hudson Hawk Theme (Hudson Hawk). The 4th song is a duet with Leon Redbone of Frosty The Snowman.
Crazy 'bout Leon Redbone!!! Another genre in and of himself.
New Orleans legend. A one-of-a-kind voice. Check out everything he did over the next 50 years.
Dr. John is also one of the most talented, unique piano players in the world. Real New Orleans style piano.
He is phenomenal. If you've never seen him and Jools Holland playing a piano duet called Boogie Woogie twins, you should check it out. That's the video that made me realize what an amazing pianist he is. His hands look almost still, yet he's rippin'.
'such a night' and 'iko iko'...great grooves. i love the good voodoo doctor. . saw him many years ago and gained perma smile the entire show. RIP the night tripper.
Great swampy song and a party banger back then, and backed by funky blues men,The Meters.
This man’s catalogue is varied but always quality.
Terrific, Funky song! Fun fact: this song, with its line "brain salad surgery," was released 8 months before the ELP album of the same name, which makes me wonder if ELP was influenced by Dr. John's song to title the album that?
The story on the ELP connection goes something like this. ELP had a different tentative title for that album, which was something like Whip some Skull on Ya - British slang for oral sex. The album cover was designed around using that title. But the record label rejected that title because they thought it was too sexually explicit. They opted for using Brain Salad Surgery because the term was used in this top-charting Dr. John Song (so he got away with it) and it was also slang used to mean the same thing.
Yes, and Brain Salad Surgery is a euphemism for masturbation.
Iko Iko worth listening to
There was a title song that got left off the album but was released on a single.
If y’all like New Orleans Funk, then give a listen to the Meters! Especially “Chicken Strut” short instrumental but sweet funk! Art Neville is a genius on the B3 Organ!
The backing band are the one only Meters. If you really want to dive into New Orleans in the 70s, The Meters and the Neville Brothers are where to start.
I recommend such a night next from Dr. John/Max. It highlights more of his New
Orleans piano playing..Saw him in 1973 with Chuck Berry and others.
Man, I was so excited when I saw this on the poll. Love, love Dr. John.
The song Dr John did in The Last Waltz was “Such A Night”. Awesome song as well.
I was 14 years old when this came out! Thanks for the Summer of 1973 memory!
New Orleans is home to some of the coolest and funkiest musicians on the planet. A hidden gem of massive talent. Explore it more!
I saw the Doctor at the 1973 Ann Arbor Blues and Jazz Festival. This was during his Dr. John the Night Tripper persona (and he was indeed a trip!), and about five years subsequent to the release of his debut lp, “Gris gris”. One track on that album that received a lot of airplay was “I Walk on Gilded Splinters”. You might want to check it out. Nawlins voodoo music at its best. You mentioned his performance in the concert movie “The Last Waltz”. That number was “Such a Night”. One of his best.
98% of the time I'm watching them hit a song I'm very familiar with, and that's fun to see. The other two percent, the song is new to both them and I, and that's really special - especially when it's as good as this was.
This brings back a lot of memories and epic stories of Tipitina's, Dr. John played there quite regularly. Sneaking in as a underage teen and seeing some great acts in that historic venue. Also Tuesdays were WTUL (collage radio station) quarter water night, twenty-five cents for a draft beer!
Total groove! This track sound so much of it's time, yet never sounds old. This is where ELP got the title Brain Salad Surgery. Check out another outstanding Dr. John track, I Walk On Guilded Splinters.
Great song choice today! You will love his grit! 😄
This album is so good, I had it stolen from me twice in high school. TWICE!
Can't get a better endorsement than that.
Nice little New Orleans ditty. Good choice. At some point, cover a Tom Waits rambling story song.
Do the whole Rain Dogs Album, by Tom Waits!
How about Skateaway, by Dire Straits?
Great song- trust me!
Awesome in all ways. Dr John is fun..he and Riki doing Making whoopee is a gem and classic.
Now yer talkin'! I love Dr John. I was fortunate to see him live right around the time of this album. He came out in a 10 ft. long Mardi Gras indian headdress and proceeded to funk the place up! He was going by 'Dr. John: The Night Tripper' at that time. I have loved him ever since. Check out 'Tipitina', 'Walk On Gilded Splinters', 'Such A Night' and 'Locked Down'!
The Doctor! Mac Rebbenack… excellent choice.
The man was New Orleans Jazz Icon that's his vocabulary speaking or singing
New Orleans own…it’s pretty much the way we talk down here. Love Dr John….RIP
Nothing bad about being a 80's radio DJ, I was a 70's DJ and often clothes were (shall we say) more flamboyant. Perfect pick for a Friday heading into Summer. RIP Dr. John.
I saw Dr John when he opened up for War in St Louis in 1996. Both were great!
I want the opening of this song on a loop to be my walk around every day music.
I was really hoping Badfinger was going to win in the poll. Please consider reacting to their song "Baby Blue". Harry Nillson was a big fan of Badfinger, and covered their "Without You".
I voted for Right Place Wrong Time, but I agree they need to react to Badginger. It was a hard choice between those 2 for me.
Just finished breaking bad for the first time and I’m with you: Baby Blue or Come n Get It which was from The Magic Christian. A film with Peter Sellers and Ringo in 68 I think.
Man, that was grooving real hard. I never looked into Dr John's discography, but I should make up for that, I guess.
I was in the right place and it musta been the right time. Great tune and excellent review!!!!
Wow, such fun reactions, you guys! Great job.👍
One of the many great songs from my H.S. senior year of 73. What great memories this brings back. Thank you guys. Always enjoy your reviews.
If you want some good vocals in the low range, check out Barry White.
The guitar solo on this was played by David Spinozza who also played with Paul McCartney, John Lennon and Ringo Starr during the 1970s.
Ooooo, them congas and horns? That bluesy guitar solo? He was a funkified doctor for sure-- Now that's how ya work a 3 chord song!! A++ as far as I'm concerned!!
My Dad was mostly a jazz guy but he liked Dr. John!
Distinctive voice. "Such a Night" is a great song, too. He has cool vibes all around. Fun songs, great songs, timeless songs: that's Dr. John.
The ultimate expression of a song having a "vibe." Never gets old.
I saw Dr. John play a solo show, just him and his piano, at an outdoor show. Unbelievable performer.
That's the stuff! Glad you did this.
Dr. John, the Night Tripper plus The Meters. S tier all day
Just watching you guys hear this for the first time made me realize growing up when all this was coming out was Incredible. As a kid, I had no idea to that I was grooving into the greatest music of all time. Sure glad that I grew up in the 60 and 70 decades for the music almost more than anything else
"I done hit the right vein, but it musta been the wrong arm." Dr John Rebennack got sober later in life. I used to do an annual fundraiser for a friend who had six halfway houses for addicts. Every year some rock and roll celebrity would show up, and give me anxiety attacks about performing in front of them. Two of the most gentlemanly dudes ever--who came over and hung with me for a few minutes, were Dr. John Rebennack, and Ricky Byrd--of Joan Jett and The Blackhearts. But being a huge fan of Dr. John, and having him take the time to come over and hang a few minutes was one of the biggest thrills of my musical life. When he passed in 2019, it hit me hard. Thanks for bringing this back. It's still a bitchin' tune.
What a great artist, yet almost forgotten. More Dr. John, please!
If you guys haven't watched Dazed and Confused, you should. I can't hear this song without thinking of that movie and you mentioned Low Rider which is also on the soundtrack. You'd dig that movie, the soundtrack is amazing and the whole thing is a vibe.
Great reaction as usual!
