In the early 70's a good friend of mine worked part time and weekends at his grandfather's funeral home. He and his buddy only had a one speaker radio to listen to music while they worked. He convinced his grandfather to buy a portable stereo 8-track tape player, based on the premise that they would be able to play organ music at the grave site. Things worked out well, the young guys would listen to rock after school and his grandfather played appropriate music during the funerals. The day came for my friend to help setup for the funeral services at the grave site. He forgot to remove his rock tape from the machine. With the family and guests seated and as the services started, his grandfather pressed the start button and over the speakers was heard, Steppenwolf "God damn the pusher man!". The music ended abruptly and my friend said he could see every vein popping out of his grandfathers head. He knew he was in big trouble

How is it they've never heard any classic rock? Hard to believe. If you're big music guys it's almost impossible to have nor heard some of these. I'm dubious but ate very likeable guys.

These songs were SO embedded in our consciousness back in the 60s, that it's very difficult to grasp that others haven't even heard these songs.
phil Stone This. My son only hears the radio when he’s with me, otherwise it’s really Spotify or Pandora. And he’s not always paying attention. Not to mention what’s on classic rock stations has changed. I really don’t hear this too much anymore
Rodger Lang , yeah the difference now is that you pick what you want. We were provided with stuff we didn’t know we wanted. Ha ha! God I swear NOTHING gives me a bigger dopamine hit than watching people hear something as great as these classic songs for the first time. Like, watching you guys react so perfectly to the start of the song and then just break into these big smiles and really enjoy yourselves is just... the BEST thing! This song seriously gets me every time and watching people listen for the first time really reinvigorates my love for it. also I AGREE with that yell at 6:06 - I lose my shit every time too! It makes my heart drop from how good it is. And I fully understand being upset by the fade out at the end but maybe I really am just a masochist bc I love being tortured like that right at the end of something so good.
People who are accustomed and have grown up with long form songs get startled by the compromises required for them to be released as radio singles.

Steppenwolf is part of the psychedelic rock genre, the aptly named acid rock. These are great tunes, and many young people heard them tripping on LSD and other recreatables. Vanilla Fudge, Strawberry Alarm Clock, and especially Iron Butterfly, are totally cool examples of acid rock. Hey, Timothy Leary, are you listening? Steal this comment.....LOL.
It's so wonderful to see young people hearing the music from my generation - it really means a lot to me.....

I was 8 years old when this came out. I immediately went from being my parent's star child who liked Tommy Roe and The Carpenters, to a hard core Steppenwolf fan overnight. They never got over it! When I doubled down with Black Sabbath they damn near threw me out of the house. Ah the good old days when rebellion could be as simple as changing your tastes in music!!

My grandfather played 1st violin in the Philadelphia Orchestra at the age of 18. His son, my father, was a successful jazz musician. When I was about 10 ('65), we were visiting my grandparents & I was listening to rock-n-roll on my transistor radio when my father told me to turn it of because he couldn't stand the noise. That's when my usually very grandpa spoke up. "No, it doesn't work that way," he told my dad. Then he went on to a lengthy explanation of how every generation has their own music & all you can do is accept it. Then he looked at my dad & said, "But I am glad to hear you say that. Now you know how I felt when you got into jazz." 🤣 Can't tell you how many times I had to remind myself of my grandfather's speech while my daughters were growing up.

This was my brothers in law favorite band. When he was on his death bed, and my wife was forced to pull the plug on his ventilator, we played this song for him. We don't know if he heard it or not, but he peacefully passed away moments later. Every time I hear this song I think of him.
I truly believe he heard it. I sat vigil with my dad before he passed on and talked to him constantly and I believe he heard every word I was saying. When he was still coherent he was talking to his sister and my niece who had both passed before him. they were waiting for him on the other side. Oh great now I am crying. But I do believe your brother in law heard the music that you were playing for him. God rest his soul.

@@thanksfernuthin That's because there never was such a thing as a "pusher". Sure, there were dealers, but they never had to push their products on anybody. Customers seek out dealers. Nobody ever bought drugs that wasn't looking to by drugs.
@@SciPunk215 I had to reply to this type of comment before. I don't know where you grew up, but where I did, yes there were Pushers. They worked the elementary and Jr. High schools (Middle schools now). By high school there was not much of a need to push, they were mostly hooked by then. If you didn't have them hanging around your schools you were lucky.
One other point, the pusher would also push their drugs onto a regular customer that was trying to get off the drugs and break their habit.
To give you an idea of the neighborhood I grew up in. The pushers tried to make out like you needed this to be cool. But if you didn't, you would be harassed to and from school. Usually by someone they would set up to bully you. You would end up fighting your way to school, at school, and on your way home. If you were lucky it was only one or two. I even learned to handle three. Had my nose broke about 4 times, got stabbed at 14 (this guy was in his mid 20's - i called him a dumb ass after he did it and threw the knife away), broke my hand on a guys head one time (he was in his early 20's and I was about 13 or 14 - oh I didn't lose that fight). You get the picture. You also needed to have some good friends of your own that weren't afraid to mix it up with just about anyone. Because where I grew up, that's just the way it was. There are thousands more just like me. If you didn't have to then, just consider yourself lucky, but don't believe there wasn't such a thing as a pusher.
To this day I have never seen anyone make it through this song without closing their eyes to experience it at some point.

Keep in mind that a lot of us were tripping on acid while listening to this stuff. LSD was a lot purer back then, so the sounds in these songs really produced a lot of incredible psychedelic images in our heads that some thought they were actually seeing, lol.

Steppenwolf’s sound on this song sort of embodies the psychedelic sound that hit in the late sixties and early seventies. I was born in ‘64, but I had sisters and brothers who were much older than I was, so I was introduced to this kind of music much earlier than most. I love it all.
Robin Trower ‘Bridge of Sighs’ is one of the best albums ever. ‘Too Rolling Stoned’ ‘& Day of the Eagle’ are definite bangers you should consider. He is 75 and still rolling! Another good ELO song to consider is ‘Fire on High’ -great instrumental. Can’t wait to hear magic carpet ride. We used to rollerskate to this back in the 70s😄

This song brings back memories of seeing Steppenwolf on Ed Sullivan’s Sunday night variety show with my parents. My father was horrified. I thought they were really cool.
Early psychedelic rock. Their anthemic classic was Born to Be Wild. My parents’ generation feared the end of civilization as they knew it due to long hair rock music and drugs. This band embodied that.

They got their start in the Yorkville(Toronto) coffee house scene in the 60’s as Jack London & the Sparrow...at one time Rick “Superfreak” James was their singer before John Kay....the rest of the side after Magic Carpet Ride is a great blues/boogie joint...the first side has Don’t Step on the Grass Sam....and basically a reverse Born to be Wild in Faster Than the Speed of Life....great band

Their song Born to be Wild is the first known instance of the term Heavy Metal used in the music industry. Yes, it is in reference to motorcycles, but, could be argued it's the origination of that term as it relates to a music genre.
Born to Be Wild is fantastic, and I agree about the Heavy Metal comment, but I would argue that The Beatles Helter Skelter is the first Heavy Metal song.

This was such a great top40 song when I was in high school. I remember hearing this, Time Has Come Today by the Chambers Brothers and Sly and the Family Stone Everyday People on the school bus on the way to school and coming home. It was always jam time. Glad you liked it!

Goldy passed a couple of years ago and he would have loved your reactions - so thanks (as always) for the major respect shown for the iconic bangers that laid the groundwork for Rock yet to come. I know Goldy is smiling! ❤️
Goldy was an absolutely awesome member of this band. His keyboard work on all of the albums he played on was tasty AF. For me, Never Too Late was his shining star, in addition to Magic Carpet Ride of course.

One of the most badass bands of all time! John Kay one of the most recognizable voices in the business. I always considered these guys as the start of heavy metal before Black Sabbath. So many good songs! Born to Be Wild, Screaming Night Hog, Jupiter's Child and the Pusher is about drug pushers and a great song.
Steppenwolf was my favorite band back in high school. I had every album. They’re an amazing mix of hard rock, psychedelic and blues. You need to listen to Monster/America.
yeah dudes Monster is one of those that you have to hear in your lifetime. It stands the test of time. I know the words by heart. And I still have every album, signed by the way . Well most of them anyway 7 albums signed by John while hanging out with the band in the Magic Carpet Ride bus, drinking a few brews before a show in Denver Colorado. Pulled up on my Screaming Night Hog and John came right out. He's a cool m...f er.

The pusher was not the same as the dealer. The pusher went out and promoted the drugs, got kids samples, hooked. Then sold them for the dealer.

When I first came to the States in 1970 I was 10 years old and Magic Carpet Ride was playing on my little Airline headphones as we landed. Fell in love with Steppenwolf right then and there. Make a long story short became a pro musician later on in the 70s and always loved Steppenwolf, especially Goldy McJohn's Hammond Organ playing, which was actually Cutting Edge for that time. About four years ago I was in a Steppenwolf tribute band and got to play for Goldy's birthday party in Seattle with Goldy himself. It was a crowning moment in my life, especially as he gave me a big thumbs up at the end of Rockin Me, and told the audience I played it just like the record. Goldy passed away shortly after that. How Steppenwolf never made the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is beyond me, as they have influenced so many musicians. Their catalog is wide and varied. And some of it very political. The song Monster is very apropos for these times. Thanks for checking out Steppenwolf!

Something interesting... My step-father had a classic Mercedes Gullwing for sale. John Kay (singer in Steppenwolf) came to our house with an assistant to look at it. He had on dark glasses and never said a word, his assistant did all the talking. This was right after Born to Be Wild came out. He bought the car for a lot of $$$.
The car was probably a gift John Kaye was giving someone special , I recently learned John was legally blind thats why he always wears dark glasses.

"The Pusher" was written by Hoyt Axton and so was "Snowblind Friend".among others.
"Magic Carpet Ride" is a 3 minute acid trip! Steppenwolf was a psychedelic band after all. There is a recording out there of them playing at The Matrix in 1966 that is very much a trip.

You guys MUST do some Kinks. I'm not going to give a history lesson of the group, you can do the research on your own but in short they are massively underrated as far as mid 1960's English rock groups go. Ray Davies is one of the best lyricists bar none and his younger brother Dave is one of the most influential guitarists in all of rock. They have tons of great songs but you really need to start with their very first hit You Really Got Me.

"You Really Got Me" is considered to be the mainstream breakthrough for "hard rock." It basically codified the genre.

I was just about to suggest this very tune. Very much in the same ballpark as Magic Carper Ride, but it does not suffer from ending too soon.
You must be young and haven't been subjected to this song a hundred times. For rock fans my age this is the most mentioned example of overindulgence. Try listening to it not stoned. Stick to the short version. LOL

Snow Blind Friend is one of my favorite Steppenwolf songs. The lyrics are so personal and tells an all to familiar story.

I grew up in the 70’s but I had 8 older siblings who exposed me to some awesome music. IMO the best music was written in the late 60’s and the 70’s. I just love you guys! It’s so fun to see you having fun with the music I’ve loved since being a kid.
Another extremely talented group. They named themselves after a 1920's novel that had a real renaissance in the 60's. Cool dudes.

I'm italian and I remember I used to ride around my hometown (Milan) in the late 80s with my custom motorcycle (a Suzuki 750cc, Harley was too expensive those days 😁), a black leather jacket where I stitched on the back the "Steppenwolf" logo in dark brown leather... Everytime I listen to them, I remember those wondeful years... ❤❤❤❤❤

Filet Knife59 There are in the history of rock, only a few songs that continue to amaze you. Forget the early Beatles (too much Pop), but Born to be Wild still is an anthem that every biker recognizes. If this song came out today, it would be groundbreaking.
I grew up in a small East Texas town of under a thousand people and on the City Cafe jukebox when we are shooting pool in the back room this song and the flip side Born to be wild Ware played almost constantly the entire time we were shooting pool.
We were all Junior high the early high school at the time, what great memories! 👍🏻👍🏻🇺🇲
