When I was in middle school, we did not have a bell to end classes. Instead, this song, or "Black Betty" would start playing . . . we'd leave the class and move to our next class listening to the music. When the song was over, the next class began. It was a small piece of heaven in every day!
I have to ask - How was Steely Dan now that Walter Becker has passed on? I would love to see them in concert. I saw the Doobie Bros a couple of years ago on their own and they were brilliant. I was so stupid for thinking Michael McDonald was the reason they were great. I was educated that night when I saw them live!

I’m 63 going on 15 and if I’m listening to these cats “you can bet your sweet bippy” granny’s gonna be lookin like Joe Cocker at Woodstock (OG) when he sang “You Are So Beautiful To Me.” Y’all keep kickin out the jams! I was born in '72. This was my favorite song as a kid in the 70s. When I hear this, it brings me breathtaking childhood innocence nostalgia, and I can't not feel good whenever I hear it. Your analogy hit me in the feels. Peace.

The Doobies are straight Rock and Roll to me. That's not to say there isn't some country influence ,but you can say that for half the rock in history because the two genres both came from blues and folk. I'd also add that I so prefer this version of the Doobies over the Michael McDonald era although I'm aware that version sold tons of records.
My favorite Doobie Bros song. They played this relentlessly back in the 1970s when this came out. Never got tired of it. So clean. So smooth. Great lyrics. Great harmonies. The whole thing is a masterpiece.
Didn't see anyone else mention it: That was Mr. Patrick Simmons on the lead vocal. He was a more country-based player than Tom Johnston, the main lead singer at that point in the band's history.

It's funny you said they are the Steely Dan of this vibe. The two bands routinely used each others studio musicians. Before Michael Macdonald was lead singer for Doobie Brothers he was a background singer for Steely Dan. Listen to the song, Peg. You can't mistake his voice in the background.
I've told them about Hatchet a couple of times. I thought they would enjoy some bangers from some fellow Floridians. Whiskey Man should be first, it has everything they like in a song.
There is something strangely satisfying about watching you both digging a song that we have listened to for many years. The interesting thing about this song is that it was originally a B-side song. It was never intended to be released as a single but eventually ended up going #1. I've suggested this before but seeing your reaction to Black Water makes me want to see you react to Lynyrd Skynyrd's "The Ballad Of Curtis Loew". This is another really cool swampy blues tune. Has a great slide guitar part in it as well.
Love the reactions guys.. I think the big difference between the current music (which I think is hyper controlled and mostly made for money) is that the old classic songs are real stories, journeys and emotions.. there's a very human quality to them. That's why we still listen and marvel at them. I was in the music business for 30 years all thru the 70's and eighties and nineties, a GOLDEN era my friends... Keep listening to these wonderful crafted songs.. they will make YOUR music that much better. All the best!
We used to cut 1st hour, drive out to the country, smoke a doobie, listen to this song over and over (in the days of 8 tracks when you had to rewind) then get donuts on the way back to school. Great memories! LOL
They did a great “isolation” video of this a little over a month ago....one of the best out there...complete with a fan singalong at the end....somehow I made the final cut!

This comment reminds me of 70's radio and one mainstay I remember them not hitting yet is Jackie Blue/Ozark Mountain Daredevils. There's still a lot of Southern Rock on the vine.
The 60s and 70s, what a flood of incredible music! So glad I grew up in those times. The unfortunate thing is there are many extremely talented musicians around today, but they can't make money as a band. They hang out on RUclips and do their thing. The industry badly needs to figure out how musicians can monetize their work in this digital age. I believe great bands will reappear if that happens.
Lyndon Brown This has always been my favorite by DB. It’s so sad and I still listen from time to time. Such a shame record execs felt the line “the radio is bringing me down) would affect airplay. They could have played it nonstop every day and I’d still love it.
It’s Pat Simmons singing this. Watching it in concert is amazing with the crowd participating. Pat explained he plays the acoustic fingerpicking Hawaiian style (slack key), detuning the guitar. It certainly helped that they were in Pearl Harbor Naval Station at the time.
I was hanging out in Waikiki in a Park in 2012 During the Super Moon hoping to get a picture of it over Diamond Head. I Just got the perfect picture of it right over the top and I heard someone start to jam this song....... Then I realized it was Them LIVE at the Waikiki Shell in a private concert. I started full on sprint across the park when I reached the fence line of the Shell. I stashed my 40 in my cargo pocket and began to climb. Fucking Magical Night. It was one of their last Performances.

You do realize they have two lead singers. Pat Simmons and Tom Johnston. Right? Pat Simmons sang this one. Tom Johnston did Listen to the Music and China Grove. And this was the "B" side of Another Park, Another Sunday.
Bros, this song was not played on country music stations. This was their take on 70's rock. Yeah, it was a southern soul infused easy going vibe. When this camo out in 1973 Charlie Rich, Tanya Tucker, Roy Clark et al were ruling the charts. Country was still very traditional.
Watching your reaction makes me feel really glad I grew up in the 70’s. To me Black Water was just one of the songs on the radio I liked. Seeing it through your eyes makes me appreciate it more.

"Who else sings catfish in a rock song?" Well, Jimi Hendrix did Catfish Blues. Not sure you'd call it a "rock song" because it's definitely blues. Then again, it IS Hendrix, so... yeah... I knew the harmonies in this tune would get you. You really should try the kings of harmony: Crosby, Stills, and Nash - Suite:Judy Blue Eyes, followed by Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young - Carry On. Those harmonies will melt the whisky glass in your hand.

Grew up on this song. I have been on the Tennessee River dead of summer, with boats tied up floating and partying at night. With EVERYONE singing this. And they're all feeling the whiskey and still get all the words right. Eveb the chorus.Yep. It's the river rat anthem. It is a masterpiece you guys♡
Oh my! Inna bar in the French Qtr of N.O.called Maxwell's Plum all night, corner of Burgundy and Conti. Leave to walk straight due east the few blocks to the mighty Mississippi to watch the sun come up and the moon go down. Sitting on the rocks on the river bank watching the black water carrying barges and ships on down the line. Gives me chills to this day. The only place every single cell in my body relaxes. Whatta song! Was a super hit back in the day. Saw the Doobies open, along with Van Halen, for the Stones in the Stones' World Wide Tour in 1978. So, yeah guys - the Doobies were awesome. Now, if you'd like to try this one: Listen to Tom Johnston solo (he was a founding member of the Doobies) do "King of Savannah Nights." There is a really great version of this one live on RUclips. I can listen to that one over and over. Thanks for your appreciation of such fabulous music!! P.S. Another former member of the Doobies, Michael McDonald, has had an excellent solo career. 'Suite: Judy Blue Eyes' was a startling song when it came out. There's really nothing like it, with brilliant acoustic guitar and vocal harmonies. Play the longer album cut, please!

I remember as a kid all of this music on regular play on the radio, going to school it played on the bus, delivering newspapers with a small transistor radio tied to the handlebars.
Almost 50 years ago - and these guys were totally FUNKY! How can that be, you might ask. WE (I was there) started all of this shit - I love it, love it.
So here's the thing with the Doobies, their great songs and production. The man that basically discovered the Doobies and produced the vast majority of their albums is the legendary producer Ted Templeman. I just read his incredible autobiography titled: Ted Templeman: a Platinum Producer's Life in Music. Guys and everyone else, if you love the Doobies, this is an absolute f-in read! Trust me, I couldn't put it down. He talks about the formation of the band, how he recorded them in the studio, along with his legendary engineer partner, Donn Landee. These guys also recorded most of the Van Halen albums as well as the legendary Montrose debut album. That's one reason why the Doobie songs sound so good. What a great band, some of the best tunes ever.....college outdoor parties by the lake with kegs, smoke, girls, frisbees and the Doobies...yeah! 😎 🍺
I was a sophomore in high school when this came out. I had an accounting class and there was a pretty girl named Marla in the class. One day I was working on a project with her in class and she started softly singing the chorus to this song. She mesmerized me. Sadly she passed away at a young age. Whenever I hear this song I always smile and think of Marla.
Love The Doobie Brothers. My best friend (RIP) and I joined the Navy together in 1984. We went to the on-base bar and played this on the jukebox. By the end of the song, we had bought the whole bar a pitcher of beer. When it got to the final lyrics the whole bar was singing with us. The manager of the bar threatened to close the bar for the night if we didn't stop. So, we said to hell with you and stood up on our chairs and continued to lead the patrons in singing for another 20 minutes. Good times and great memories! Peace

@@michellowe8627 Michael McDonald did not ruin the Doobie Bro. He was brought in by Skunk Baxter after lead singer Tom Johnson became ill & had to stop touring. Michael just took them in a more blusey jazz direction, of which catapulted them in sales & awards. I love both their incarnations, as do many of their fans.

"What a Fool Believes" is still my favorite by the Doobie Bros. I heard them in concert alongside Steely Dan back in 2018 and damn they were good. Amazing show.

For me, I like all of the Doobie Brothers and their incarnations. This one was brought to by my all-time favourite Doobie, Patrick Simmons. He was always there, consistently delivering awesome, heartfelt performances. Doing it to this day. Nice reaction guys🤘
I saw them at this show January 25, 1973 Memorial Coliseum, Portland, OR (with Rare Earth who you should definitely check out, they had the best opening bands) They were even better live at this point. They opened for Rare Earth. Phenomenal!! So good that when Rare Earth came out on stage the crowd booed and screamed for Doobies. Rare Earth was devastated and grabbed they're guitars and walked off stage. The whole Doobie Brothers band came out on stage and reamed the crowd out big time!! They said Rare Earth was one of the best bands they ever toured with and they owed alot to them, so we should show them some respect. You could hear people in the crowd saying what assholes they'd been. Everyone applauded. Rare Earth came back out to wild cheers and blew everyone away!! The kicker was the encore. The Doobie Brothers came out with Rare Earth and jammed for over an hour. Early rock classics and free form jam. Smok'in Hot!!!! One of my all-time favorite shows.
I remember when Blackwater first aired. It defined the whole summer. Sure there were other huge hits: Born To Run, Bohemian Rhapsody, Wish Your Were Here, to name a few, but, this song counter-balanced everything, and it aired A LOT. Didn't matter what came on before or after, this song set the mood. What an incredible vibe.
Another classic. One of the coolest grove tunes that is in their catalog. Love the acoustics and blended voices. Another suggestion would be South City Midnight Lady or Another’s Park Another Sunday. Keep on rockin!

Donna Lockhart Steely Dan was amazing even after the loss of Walter Becker. Donald Fagen has always put on a great show.

The Doobies are straight Rock and Roll to me. That's not to say there isn't some country influence ,but you can say that for half the rock in history because the two genres both came from blues and folk. I'd also add that I so prefer this version of the Doobies over the Michael McDonald era although I'm aware that version sold tons of records.

It's funny you said they are the Steely Dan of this vibe. The two bands routinely used each others studio musicians. Before Michael Macdonald was lead singer for Doobie Brothers he was a background singer for Steely Dan. Listen to the song, Peg. You can't mistake his voice in the background.

There is something strangely satisfying about watching you both digging a song that we have listened to for many years. The interesting thing about this song is that it was originally a B-side song. It was never intended to be released as a single but eventually ended up going #1.
I've suggested this before but seeing your reaction to Black Water makes me want to see you react to Lynyrd Skynyrd's "The Ballad Of Curtis Loew". This is another really cool swampy blues tune. Has a great slide guitar part in it as well.

I think the big difference between the current music (which I think is hyper controlled and mostly made for money) is that the old classic songs are real stories, journeys and emotions.. there's a very human quality to them. That's why we still listen and marvel at them. I was in the music business for 30 years all thru the 70's and eighties and nineties, a GOLDEN era my friends... Keep listening to these wonderful crafted songs.. they will make YOUR music that much better. All the best!

The 60s and 70s, what a flood of incredible music! So glad I grew up in those times. The unfortunate thing is there are many extremely talented musicians around today, but they can't make money as a band. They hang out on RUclips and do their thing. The industry badly needs to figure out how musicians can monetize their work in this digital age. I believe great bands will reappear if that happens.

It’s Pat Simmons singing this. Watching it in concert is amazing with the crowd participating. Pat explained he plays the acoustic fingerpicking Hawaiian style (slack key), detuning the guitar. It certainly helped that they were in Pearl Harbor Naval Station at the time.

I was hanging out in Waikiki in a Park in 2012 During the Super Moon hoping to get a picture of it over Diamond Head. I Just got the perfect picture of it right over the top and I heard someone start to jam this song....... Then I realized it was Them LIVE at the Waikiki Shell in a private concert. I started full on sprint across the park when I reached the fence line of the Shell. I stashed my 40 in my cargo pocket and began to climb. Fucking Magical Night. It was one of their last Performances.
They’re touring now with Tom and Mike. And they sound just as great. Saw them two years ago in Mountain View. Their 50th anniversary tour.

Bros, this song was not played on country music stations. This was their take on 70's rock. Yeah, it was a southern soul infused easy going vibe. When this camo out in 1973 Charlie Rich, Tanya Tucker, Roy Clark et al were ruling the charts. Country was still very traditional.
Watching your reaction makes me feel really glad I grew up in the 70’s. To me Black Water was just one of the songs on the radio I liked. Seeing it through your eyes makes me appreciate it more.

"Who else sings catfish in a rock song?" Well, Jimi Hendrix did Catfish Blues. Not sure you'd call it a "rock song" because it's definitely blues. Then again, it IS Hendrix, so... yeah... I knew the harmonies in this tune would get you. You really should try the kings of harmony: Crosby, Stills, and Nash - Suite:Judy Blue Eyes, followed by Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young - Carry On. Those harmonies will melt the whisky glass in your hand.

Leave to walk straight due east the few blocks to the mighty Mississippi to watch the sun come up and the moon go down. Sitting on the rocks on the river bank watching the black water carrying barges and ships on down the line. Gives me chills to this day. The only place every single cell in my body relaxes. Whatta song! Was a super hit back in the day. Saw the Doobies open, along with Van Halen, for the Stones in the Stones' World Wide Tour in 1978. So, yeah guys - the Doobies were awesome. Now, if you'd like to try this one: Listen to Tom Johnston solo (he was a founding member of the Doobies) do "King of Savannah Nights." There is a really great version of this one live on RUclips. So here's the thing with the Doobies, their great songs and production. The man that basically discovered the Doobies and produced the vast majority of their albums is the legendary producer Ted Templeman. I just read his incredible autobiography titled: Ted Templeman: a Platinum Producer's Life in Music. Guys and everyone else, if you love the Doobies, this is an absolute f-in read! Trust me, I couldn't put it down. He talks about the formation of the band, how he recorded them in the studio, along with his legendary engineer partner, Donn Landee. These guys also recorded most of the Van Halen albums as well as the legendary Montrose debut album. That's one reason why the Doobie songs sound so good. What a great band, some of the best tunes ever.....college outdoor parties by the lake with kegs, smoke, girls, frisbees and the Doobies...yeah! 😎 🍺

I was a sophomore in high school when this came out. I had an accounting class and there was a pretty girl named Marla in the class. One day I was working on a project with her in class and she started softly singing the chorus to this song. She mesmerized me. Sadly she passed away at a young age. Love The Doobie Brothers. My best friend (RIP) and I joined the Navy together in 1984. We went to the on-base bar and played this on the jukebox. By the end of the song, we had bought the whole bar a pitcher of beer. When it got to the final lyrics the whole bar was singing with us. The manager of the bar threatened to close the bar for the night if we didn't stop. So, we said to hell with you and stood up on our chairs and continued to lead the patrons in singing for another 20 minutes. Good times and great memories! Peace

I saw them at this show January 25, 1973 Memorial Coliseum, Portland, OR (with Rare Earth who you should definitely check out, they had the best opening bands)
They were even better live at this point. They opened for Rare Earth. Phenomenal!! So good that when Rare Earth came out on stage the crowd booed and screamed for Doobies. Rare Earth was devastated and grabbed they're guitars and walked off stage. The whole Doobie Brothers band came out on stage and reamed the crowd out big time!! They said Rare Earth was one of the best bands they ever toured with and they owed alot to them, so we should show them some respect. You could hear people in the crowd saying what assholes they'd been. Everyone applauded. Rare Earth came back out to wild cheers and blew everyone away!! The kicker was the encore. The Doobie Brothers came out with Rare Earth and jammed for over an hour. Early rock classics and free form jam. Smok'in Hot!!!! One of my all-time favorite shows.
I remember when Blackwater first aired. It defined the whole summer. Sure there were other huge hits: Born To Run, Bohemian Rhapsody, Wish Your Were Here, to name a few, but, this song counter-balanced everything, and it aired A LOT. Didn't matter what came on before or after, this song set the mood. What an incredible vibe.
Another classic. One of the coolest grove tunes that is in their catalog. Love the acoustics and blended voices. Another suggestion would be South City Midnight Lady or Another’s Park Another Sunday. Keep on rockin!
