If cool was a song....this is it.
Couldn't have said it any better.
Dr. John is a New Orleans musician’s musician, a legend in artistic circles. A Rock & Roll Hall of Fame member and winner of
several blues Grammys. His piano playing is legendary. His version of "Saint James Infirmary" is classic.
The incomparable Dr John. His musical history is massive! Do yourselves a favor- read his autobiography. He talks about 3 different sessions of music during any night in New Orleans. 1st-for the tourists, 2nd-for the bands, 3rd-for the true local musicians swapping licks through wee hours of the morning.
RIP Mac, aka Dr. John❤
Amen, Brother. The incomparable Dr. John, sometimes called "The Night Tripper".
💙💙💙💙💙... I haven't heard this in SO LONG... I'm actually sitting here getting chills watching you guys discover Dr. John for the first time!! Again...
thank you for taking me back to my youth!!!!!😎😎
This is New Orleans music royalty! We sadly lost him a fee years ago. He would close out Jazz Fest often with the Neville Brothers. His voice is a straight up lower 9th ward accent. He also played session piano on a lot of other tunes you have heard from other artists. Also played with SRV a couple of times. We LOVE The Good Doctor!
Got a funny story about the guitar solo. Session guitarist Dave Spinozza, got a call from Dr John to do the solo because they forgot to do it with Leo from the Meters who had left. Dave walked in, took out his axe and was playing along to the track, to get a feel, not even thinkin. They stopped the track and said something like " Yeah ! OK, thank you Dave" and he said " Wait..what ? I was just warmin up..Lemme do it right" They said " No need man, you did it ! "
This is a jam. Funky and soulful. Great reaction fellas. Appreciate you 🙏 ❤
Dr. John is BAD!! I bought a box set with his first 7 albums and love his stuff! This was a hit when it came out and I remember seeing him do his Night Tripper thing on In Concert or Midnight Special.
Dr John has my favorite version of "Iko Iko". Dude brings the heat.
He’s New Orleans finest, but you must jump into the Meters, another great funky band from New Orleans. Their song “Sissy Strut” is an instrumental, but it always gets my juices flowing during Jazz Fest season. Zigg-a-Boo’s (pronounced) drumming riff defines the word FUNKY!!
The Meters are backing the good Dr on this track!❤
Meters are so sick!! In an amazing turn of events were able to get Leo Nocitelli to play at our New Year’s Eve party as 2000 came in. He, Merl Saunders, and this cool younger (my age at the time) guy from New Orleans, Derrick Freeman, to play drums. Such an amazing experience!
You’re entering the New Orleans dimension now, so nice of you ! As far as Dr John is concerned, I recommend you the duet live with Etta James on « I’d rather go blind ». If you don’t know it already, I can guarantee tears of joy. Thanks for your marvelous channel
Finally 🎉
There's a super cool unscripted vid of Dr J and Johnny Winter hanging and playing unscripted really attests to their skills
You guys need to watch the Concert/Movie called The Last Waltz. It’s the farewell concert for the band called “The Band”. It was directed by Martin Scorsese and features so many great bands including Dr. John, Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, Van Morrison, Eric Clapton and many more. It’s a must watch!
For sure!!!
You guys have some great self control. There is no way I can just sit and listen to this tune, I am up shaken it every time. 🕺🏻💃🏼
Same!!
A great voice! And Dr. John was the model for the leader of the Muppet band, Dr. Teeth.
Dr John in the house! Th!nks fellas...always love the energy! Give a listen to Dr John the Night Tripper and Walk on Guilded Splinters....
Oh hell yeah, Dr. John!
This was so popular when I was a kid! I still love it! Thanks guys. Peace!
There's enough gravel in that voice to cover my driveway! 😁
Dr John is a New Orleans Jazz mainstay and this song - as cool as it is - reminds me of a New Orleans parade performance... drawing us in as Dr John and other players get closer... add more and more layers and layers to what first seemed to be a deceptively simple tune... keeping us all grooving and guessing what is coming our way... as they float on by... and fade away... and approach yet the next group of folks lucky to be their next stop along the way.
First concert: Lou Reed and Dr. John. Mid seventies.
How can you not get up and groove to this, the Dr is in!
Wow. I never thought of the Brickhouse similarities 😮Nice! Dr. John is from New Orleans, LA.
That was a Great Comparison... I had Never seen the similarities either....✌
Mama Roux is a great DJ song-great groove. Such A Night also. Walk On Gilded Splinters is trippy
Dr. John, the Meters, Allen Toussaint, a Neville Bro… New Orleans vibe all over this funky sound. Now I gotta go find me some gumbo, jambalaya, po boys…
Don't forget the Professor!
@@pvank1799I think that he's talking about the personnel involved in this wonderful album and Professor Longhair wasn't in it.
I first saw Dr. John in 1973 on the Midnight Special performing this song when it was released. His reputation as a fantastic pianist and musician was already established. One of the things that made his singing so unique was the way his New Orleans background sounded in his jowls as he sounded out his lyrics.
You guys should watch the video of Jeff Healey playing SEE THE LIGHT and notice that Dr. John is the one tripping out the keys in the background. This says plenty about his reputation and willingness to work with fellow artists and musicians. His duet with the great Etta James singing I'D RATHER GO BLIND is beautiful. Keep going.
An incredible life of experience transposed into melody
GOOD MORNING YALL!!!!! THROWING OUT THE HITS AS USUAL!!! HAVE AN AMAZING SUNDAY!
Have to love exploring old song's, the talent of so many people threw out history.
Welcome to the music and culture of New Orleans where the Supernatural meets Cosmos!!!! And things are Stranger than the popular show "Stranger Things." The Main Medicine of this Culture and Music of New Orleans is Dr. John who sings about Drugs....LSD....Heroine...Weed....Vampires....Werewolves.....VooDoo ....and Ghost. He and his team epitomizes Southern Rock and Funk!!! You guys are going to enjoy This Rabbit Hole!!!! lol....Good Reaction!!!!
Thanks for taking me back to the summer of 73. Dr. John's biggest hit. "Just need a little brain salad surgery
I got to que my insecurity". What's interesting is in December of 73 EL&P released an album titled Brain Salad Surgery. Keep the 70's going gentlemen.
I've been there since the first album. The original version of "I Walk on Gilded Splinters" goes as far back in the delta swamp as you will ever reach. The spirit and soul of New Orleans passed from Professor Longhair and resided in Mac until his death. I could not imagine a life without Dr. John on my system - barely a week goes by without him. RIP, Mac.
Guilded Splinters is amazing! You can visualize moonlight filtering through the Spanish moss, the mist rising from the swamp, all sorts of spooky shapes gliding just out of view …
I saw Dr John do this song in concert in 2016 in Portland. Great performer.
Your hitting on all cylinders now guys with this and Van the Man, it's gonna be a good day....
Have loved this Man for Decades!!
I'm 66 !
I discovered 17 years ago that my Biological father was from' New Orleans '
And I'm apparently part Native American, will never meet him but it's all Cool!,
It's gotta be in my DNA !
Probably why I love these grooves so much!
Much love from London!!!...
X
You guys are killing it
Love the Doctor! Was a very cool hipster right out of the New Orleans soup of cool…just need a little brain salad surgery…indeed! Voodoo funk from the master! Thanks, guys!
Hello La n Che, Ned from Spain here. Thanks for brightening evrybodys day ! King of New Orleans Hoodoo Voodoo n Gris Gris funkyness is this man, Mac Rebennack aka Dr John ! His backing band on this LP are the awesome Meters, Ziggy Modeliste on dr, Leo Nocentelli gtr, Art Neville keys and George Porter bass. No one can do the NOLA gumbo swamp funk like them. You gotta get summa those Meters instro sides into your repertoire. Thanks mans !
Completely forgot about this song ...I love it. How can you not dance ?
Now that’s some funk! Love this song!
It`s New Orleans, where it`s party time all the time.
Great reaction my friends! 😊
Dr. John played that funky piano on the SNL performance of See The Light by Jeff Healey. Crazy talented musicians created a must see performance.
Makes me proud to be from Louisiana.
I'mma recommend [from Dr. John]:
"Can't Get Enuff";
"The Ear Is On Strike";
"I Been Hoodood";
"R U 4 Real";
"Qualified";;
"The Lonesome Guitar Stangler" [sic]
"Women"';
"You Said It";
"Babylon";
"Make Your Own"
'Everybody Wanna Get Rich Right Away'
Dr John Breaking It Down !!!!!
I have had this tune on my playlist for many, many years. It's one of those songs that I never get tired of hearing. He has such a unique voice most likely being from New Orleans is my guess. Great song and great reaction. Take care.
Got to love New Orleans music
Love Mac. His song Such a Night is a classic!
Cajun!
Thankyou- knew you’d love it!!! And New Orleans thanks you! ❤
Great choice.
The song that made everyone love funk.

Good stuff my MEN! Love y'all. Lord loves ya 2!
That's my Hometown Brotha....New Orleans!
I was thinking that I never realized how much Dr. John sounds Like Johnny Guitar Watson, and then you guys mentioned it!
Such a great voice!
You should watch all THE LAST WALTZ!!
He’s in it doing Such A Night. So many great 60s artists bidding farewell to The Band.
Filmed by Martin Scorsese!
I was gonna post the same suggestion. I think I will do it’s seen multiple times lol
Learned From Professor Longhair!!!Just a Groovin White Dude that Rocked that NOLA VIBE ALL OVAH THE PLACE!!
50 years ago this week on the American Top 40, this song dropped from #13 to 33. and now...back to the countdown
I was 12 years old when this came out and I always thought he was black until I saw him on The Midnight Special, boy was I surprised 😀. He was born in New Orleans and died in New Orleans and was an absolute master at combining blues, jazz, funk, and R&B.
Mac Rebinack aka Dr John was the king of Cajun soul. A studio musician in his teens, his writing defined New Orleans! His song, Iko, Iko, tells the story!
You guys are on fire today!! Thank you!!! 👍❤🤙
You gotta do the song Mos' Scocious next. One of my favorite Dr John tunes. It's badass.
I didn't know y'all were familiar with Johnny Guitar Watson. I love his music . His old blues and his later funk influenced music.
Very cool song. Love this vibe
Oh lort. This gon be good. I LOVE this song...
I had the Johnny G Watson album at 14...

To hear Dr. John's magnificence as a pianist, check out , "Goodnight Irene", or "Accentuate the Positive"
Best Ive seen this afternoon. Ty, guys...
Three Great Reactions and Songs Today !!🙂
Fun! Your sources are leading you towards all good stuff. Hats off
6-time grammy winner, a 2005 R&R HOF inductee who had lots of soul throughout his body. Dr. John played guitar but later switched to piano, his style combined blues, pop, R&R, boogie woogie and jazz. His discography list is longer than your arm. He passed of a heart attack in 2019 (RIP) at 77 years of age. This song was his biggest hit and is synonomous to his identity. Thanks for reacting.
Y’all gotta recognize that voice from “Love that chicken from Popeyes”
I knew both of you would enjoy this absolute classic & I'm so glad you did.
There is a very wonderful live concert called B.B. King and friends. Of course B.B. King, Albert King Eric Clapton, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Paul Butterfield , Phil Collins, Gladys Knight, Etta James, Chaka Khan, Billy Ocean and Dr. John. One stunning performance Dr. John and Etta James do I'd Rather Go Blind, and Gladys and B.B. have a terrific performance as well. The whole show is amazing I highly recommend watching the whole thing. So many legends on stage🎼🎶🎸✌️
I think I saw that in 1987 concert. I'd Rather Go Blind duett.❤❤ with Etta James🔥🔥
Saw the good Dr. open up for BB King at the Umbria Jazz Festival in Perugia Italy years ago. Amazing.
Hosted Mack a few times at festivals! Spent some “quality” time in his tour bus.
He was a big demander of superior backline stuff! Had to rent a B3 and a full size grand piano for him, each time!
Peace
I was 8 when this came out! Great job!
anytime Dr. John was involved in any musical undertaking guaranteed it was gonna be better...
some people just have it and this is the perfect example!
Another song when it came out I'm a Motown white kid absolutely positive this is the coolest black dude ever. Probably in his bones Dr John got him some French Quarter Cajun funk DNA off a bartop or something.
Can’t miss with the “Meters” backing you!
Zigaboo Modeliste laying down the groove! Great reaction!
Boy does this take me back
Dr. John is the City of New Orleans in human form. Wild, crazy, fun, outrageous, dirt down gritty and PURE SOUL!
Dr hook a whole groove 🔥
……..you really should react to their live version ! Great reaction as always ❤️ the 70’s was a fun time 🫶🏻
Well played guys!!!!
MEGA-classic!!! New Orleans finest..haa, yep prolly some drug references, he was a Dope addict.
Love the meters.
Love Dr John…please play him singing Such a Night,with the band live from the last waltz
The Meters were the rhythm section on this LP, and Dr. John wrote a masterpiece on this one!
I was like 10 or 11 when this song came out back in the day. Way back then this was different and was kickin ass. Thanks fellas another banger. Take care.
Spanking groove!
Malcolm John Rebennack Jr. "paging Dr John, your presence is required...."
Dr. John...THE NIGHT TRIPPER
He was a wild New Orleans jazzy blues man.
Brain Salad Surgery ,another band called Emerson, Lake and Palmer took that line and named an album with it
The only Dr I like..... Killer version live with the Band in the Last Waltz. with brings up my idea. Do every song from the last waltz. They feature all great artist and trust me they knew it was going to be an epic send off to a great ensemble of talent we call THE BAND. Van, Eric Neil, the hawk and many more sing and play. Thanks guys
