New Orleans own funk master. Don’t sleep on this artist, he’s a legend in the musician community. 🤘😎
Pure New Orleans funk!! Take a deep dive into his discography...we LOVE the Dr. RIP Mac.
Straight out of New Orleans. Combines New Orleans blues, jazz, funk, and R&B. One of a kind
Dr. John is from the real NAWLINS!
He is from New Orleans LA. He is a jazz fixture down there of over 50 years. He does a fusion of Jazz/Funk and Rock. He also has a hit couple of other great songs like "Such a Night," and others.
He was huge in the 70s.
I'm 61 and it does my soul good to see the younger generation still able to appreciate the greatness of our times music.
62 here! Agree 1000% with you!
Meet Mac Rebenac, aka Dr. John The Night Tripper. Mac was born and raised in New Orleans, La. and there was no hiding that fact. He brings the funk to everything he touches. RIP Dr. John.
Gris, gris gumbo ya ya........
Brain Salad Surgery is a reference to an Emmerson, Lake, and Palmer album released the same year (1973) . Dr. John is New Orleans music. He was born and died in New Orleans.
ELP picked that line up from Dr. John .. Right Place was released 6 months before BS Surgery and it was used in a super clever way with that album cover ..
@@VIDSTORAGE , you are right...and brain salad surgery = oral sex. The Dr. meant it in that way. Now that verse means a bit more, eh?
Dr. John was also part of the wrecking crew who was composed of studio musicians who played on most of early rock and roll.
Wife here..This got serious radio play in the late 70's..!!..Definitely New Orleans Funk.!!
Even as a small child I would be JAMMING..to Dr.John
Love Dr John. This song is like a psychedelic funk. Reminds me of Sly & The Family Stone a little.
Yep...
When you reacted to Jeff Healy “See The Light” he was playing the piano… The Late, Great Dr. John
Oops, you beat me to this comment.
You gotta do Dr. John with The Band at The Last Waltz doing 'Such a Night'!
Where ya at, man? Dr. John is struttin' with some New Orleans funk here. And that's his hometown (and mine, too).
"Ah took da right roooad/but I musta took the wrong toine..." 🤣 Loved him & his Nawlins accent. Check out his tremendous performance of "Such a Night" from the Band's "Last Waltz" concert film.
There's a nice duet between Dr. John and the equally eccentric Leon Redbone on the children's Christmas song, "Frosty The Snowman" that's available on RUclips - check it out sometime.
Its become one of my favorite Christmas songs
The best version.
When I found your reaction to this song:
I knew I was in the right place, and I knew it was the right time!
💥🔥✨
Asia & BJ, you might like his "Such A Night" as well! Tasty piano!!
The live version from The Last Waltz is awesome
Great New Orleans funk song, but he is really known for his phenomenal piano playing. Listen to Tipitina, Iko Iko or Junko Partner from his Gumbo album (live versions). Also, Such a Night from the movie The Last Waltz. There also a video of him playing an instrumental called Mac’s Boogie which really shows his piano skills.
New Orleans funky sh*t. Dr. John was huge figure there, for like 50 years. Was a virtuoso funky/blues/jazz pianist too, played on lots of peoples stuff. Long, rich, varied career. Listen to some more stuff off Dr John's Gumbo album or this album (In the Right Place) to start checking him out. Had some great late albums too: Tribal, Locked Down, City that Care Forgot.
I love this song, and I love to sing along with it, but it does aggravate me that I've never been able to sing the entire song without messing up what he did when, 😆
When he pronounced "turn" like "toyn", I thought, "THAT's definitely some old school Louisiana"!
💃 💃 💃 This takes me straight back to my childhood, when my mom dressed me in a bell-bottomed denim jumpsuit, platform shoes, shag haircut and sent sent me of to grade school 🤣🤣.
This was so fun guys!
Great job as always 💕💕💕
I need to see a photo. 😄
Your Mom was cool!
The brother just can't get a break. If it's the right place, it's the wrong time. If it's the right this, it's the wrong that. 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Dr. John,..just love him,..you knew exactly who you were looking at when you saw him perform,..Robert Plant,..Steven Tyler, and a lot of others you know have that rock star look,..Elton John,..again unmistakable who you were looking at,..the wild psychedelic glasses,.platform shoes, boots,..Dr. John too,..with the rose colored glasses,.boa feathers,..velvet coats,.leopard,.zebra design,..top hats 🎩,..pimped out hats,.(I don't know if it was an inadvertent nod to who,..but Peter Gabriel wears the same type hat in Steam video,)..he was a dresser I tell you,..little from the 60's, going into the 70's,. yess hippie'sh,..bohemian like too,..he was awesome,..keep going young people,..love your journey into this old music,..Godspeed, Peace ✌
Absolute Legend! Definitely check out "Such a Night" as well, then go for a deep dive into his funk but also his masterful New Orleans jazz/blues piano.
Dr. John filled the prescription for early 70's funk rock no doubt.
Saw him in '86 Monterey Jazz Festival , on Blues Saturday .
Memorable .
He's at the keys on that liveJeff Healy all time banger "See The Light" that you played .
Y'all blessin me again .
The band on this is The Meters. THE New Orleans premiere, legendary funk band. Sampled in Hip Hop ) Tribe, LL, EPMD, PE, Latifah…)
An absolute legend but sadly most fans don't know this fact....But you can bet your ass on one thing, ALL musicians and those in the know recognized his musical genius.....
Dr John actually started out as a guitarist, but he got shot in the finger after a gig and switched to piano.
He was also part of the Wrecking Crew, a bunch of studio musicians who played in a lot of the early rock albums as well as the popular music of the time. They eventually became Phil Spector's (huge music producer of the time) in the 60's
The hippie funk band on the Muppets, Dr Teeth and Electric Mayhem, was based directly on Dr John.
The guitar solo was ONE TAKE. The guitaists says he thought he was would get several chances, but the producers took his first take.
“Brain Salad Surgery” was an LP by the incredible three man band ELP.
Emerson Lake & Palmer. I’ve always heard rumors about what the title meant
but I’ll leave it there!
More of the doctor please ! The catalogue is deep, funky, trippy, diverse and awesome
To add to my own comment, this album is awesome. Can't go wrong with the meters backing you up
Gris Gris pronounced gree - gree was Malcolm John Rebennack Jr's first album and when he took on the name ~ persona Dr. John , Doctor John Montanet was a real voodoo priest in the mid 1800's in New Orleans . Dr John the musician like his music lead a very colorful ~ weird life . He was actually a part owner of a Voodoo shop in Naw'lins where they sold Gris Gris's (Voodoo Charms ) . Nice reation . . . now how about some early EWF " Head To The Sky " ?
Dr John is one of a kind. Has too many great songs to list. He does a badass version of It Don't Mean a Thing if You Ain't Got that Swing.
Y'all would also enjoy these two bands, The Meters, and Little Feat.
Yes he is one the best funk masters.i still have him on 8 track and cassette tape.
His music combined New Orleans blues, jazz, funk, and R&B
"I been in the right vein, But it seems like a wrong arm"-Mac "Dr. John Creaux" Rebbenack-The Night Tripper. Now go really deep into Doctor John with Patriotic Flag Waiver.
He was a heroin user 30+years
Finally someone woke up and got Doctor John on there RUclips channel.
Good job folks. Doctor John is awesome!
going back to "Brain Salad Surgery", that was not only a great album, but the title song to it didn't appear on that album, it came later on a different album for some reason.
you guys should listen to ELP's song Tarkus, or the album Trilogy or Pictures at an Exhibition. their songs, Toccata, Hoedown, A Time and A Place, Lucky Man, Fanfare for the Common Man, are just AWESOME songs
Didn't Dr. John sang in the theme song of "Curious George"? He is incredible
The good Dr. is from New Orleans , as am I . Seen him more than a few times , sadly he's no longer with us .
I was so fortunate to have seen Dr. John, Irma Thomas, Joe Cocker, BB King & SRV at the Benson & Hedges Blues Festival in Atlanta on June 15, 1990, just 3 months before SRV's untimely demise.
An INFECTIOUS groove in this smash! Dr. John is from Louisiana and he is a more blues/jazz artist, but this shot up the charts in the early 70s. Damn Hot
This song was big on the jukebox at the city pool back then , fun times thanks again!
Dr. John is an icon
"Such a Night", another good tune from the Doctor
Dr. John (aka Mac Rebennack, his real name) is an awesome New Orleans musician. If you like his funky sound here, you ought to check out any of his boogie-woogie piano tracks. They are impeccable! A true master, following in the footsteps of some New Orleans greats.
First time I heard Dr John was in 68. "Dr John The Night Tripper"
The Meters were also a huge influence on this fella.
The Neville brothers came from the meters
Used wonderfully as part of the soundtrack of the movie "Sahara".
I saw dr John in 1972 ... academy of music New York City....
Asia & BJ I’m glad you guys are experiencing the music I grew up with. That way I want you experience more Santana.
Dr. John was born on 20 November 1941 New Orleans, Louisiana. Birthname Malcom John Rebennack and became a professional musician playing in Nightclubs at 13. Dr. John was the inspiration for the Muppet character Dr. Teeth. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2011. In 2003 his album Dr. John's Gumbo was listed as #404 of Rolling Stones top 500 greatest albums. Sorry had to edit this post. I forgot to think you both Asia and BJ for this reaction. RIP Dr. John (6 June 2019)
I especially love his duet with Rikki...called Making Whoopee! Awesome
Oh yes yes yes. Check out his tune "Such a Night," especially the live version with The Band.
We also can't forget this track from Dr. John was produced by Allen Toussaint. Allen and Mac made a lot of good music together.
Backed by the Meters! I would recommend his bio. I was on a cruise with him about 30 years. Everyone was sick and he only left his room for shows. I had him sign the book. I said interesting life and said I don't want live it again. Wild life. New Orleans!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Surprised it hasn't been mentioned yet...This is the guy that sang that "love that chicken from Popeye's" jingle...
Dr John and Etta James. I'd Rather go Blind. Phenomenal
Got it BJ, Creole from Louisiana. "Gri, gri gumbo, ya ya" 😄🤟
Ooooweee... that conga playa kicks some azz on this track! Props to the Dr. for the funk.
Awesome 👍, RIP Mac Rebenac
Please check out Average White Band “Cut The Cake” And “Pick Up The Pieces”
Years ago, when he was first on TV, he came out on stage dressed as a tree, seriously. Needless to say, he was a HUGE hit!!👍😉😎😍
He received a full Orleans funeral parade
New Orleans funk, in the video of Jeff Healey see the light, Dr john was playing on piano
The line in this song Brain Salad Surgery references Emerson Lake And Palmer's Album and song
Dr. John is the New Orleans soul/funk master
Doesn't get much more funky than this song.
Great reaction, again!!! Gettin funky. Love it!!! Check out the 1974 Live version on RUclips. It's baaaad!!!
Yesssssa! Grooveline baby!

RIP Mac, sure do miss him. More please!

Lol, yeah Dr. J has some funk going on, and we know who to thank for that. Haven't heard this tune in a long time, and it makes me laugh every time. Thanks Asia and BJ, see you soon!

Legendary. RIP Dr.
See my life shakin with every whoo I meet. Haha. Love his accent.
I remember this song when it came out. Great music.
Oh Asia when u started singing the song...u sound so good...I knew you were a singer! So explore!!!
Southern...great bluesy funk from New Orleans.
Dr John is a true original from New Orleans, the coolest and most original city in the USA.
Cajun Funk Rock!
Saw him live about 10 years ago... was on my Bucket list.
Dr. John is straight up N'awlins!
Puts on one HELL of a show!
RIP Mac the funkiest white boy to ever roam the earth! Thanks for the music.
I've always considered it to be my introduction to Funk.
The next one you should react to from DR. John is, Such A Night!
As others have said, New Orleans, with funk and blues rolled up and smokin'.
Creole....good call
Dr John is a legend!
This was sampled by Steady B on I’m Serious BDP Remix
Kinda forgot how cool this song is. Enjoyed hearing this one again
If y'all would consider featuring another Dr. John cut I would emphatically recommend "How Come My Dog Don't Bark When You Come Around"...i bet.your reactions would make a good video
Funk - New Orleans style
Do yourselves a favor and listen to his 'Such A Night'. He did it with The Band in The Last Waltz and it was one of the highlights of the show.
Classic early 70s
Any time you play and react to funk, my respect for you bumps up!
You've seen Dr. John before. He was playing the piano when you reacted to Jeff Healy "Can You See the Light?"
How did I miss you doing this. The Doctors great! You seen him playing with Jeff Healy. "Help me Doctor I've got the blues".
