Hoodoo moon is a good read he was a Night Tripper alright his ties to voodoo-hoodoo are real . I think he and a friend put a curse on a producer once , and he was part owner in a real Voodoo curio shop and was took part in ceremonies . Dr. Joh was an incredibly interesting and talented person. He was a legendary performer, and his live shows were unforgettable events. He won 6 Grammy awards and put out 30 albums even though he really only had this one big radio hit. Dr. John is also in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame (2011). He was also a powerhouse behind the scenes as a song writer and studio musician. He made contributions to hundreds of songs and albums by a multitude of other artists. He also popped up in lots of movies and TV shows usually appearing as himself. A very unique and interesting individual. Oh Yeah, he had an honorary Doctorate Degree from Tulane University.
Dr John’s Only hit?? “Iko Iko” and “Such a Night” qualify as top tracks, too. There’s a video on RUclips that shows a spectacular piano opening before the band comes in!

"How can he be so funky?" That is pure New Orleans Yattitude, baby! His real name was John Malcolm "Mac" Rebennack - he took his stage name from a famous hoodoo practitioner in New Orleans. You should check out some of his other songs like "Revolution", "I Walk on Gilded Splinters", "How Come My Dog Don't Bark When You Come Around", "Gris Gris Gumbo Ya Ya", "Iko Iko", "Such a Night", "Mardi Gras Day", Litanie Des Saints"...just to name a few. We lost Dr. John in June 2019 - and he is very missed.
He did a super funky tune with Tom Scott ....."So White and So Funky" on the album Apple Juice. Find it and listen......great stuff. Damn I miss the Doctor......
You don’t make it in the NOLA music scene without being funky. Music here doesn’t diverge along racial lines. Mac (Dr. John) played with everyone from Satchmo to Marsalis … well maybe not Satchmo.
This is one of the "BADDEST" tunes ever conceived, composed and performed. I first heard this tune in a bar in San Francisco about 40-45 years ago. Absolutely KILLER! Thanks so much for your reaction, Harry..............
Mac Rebenack is legit. He’s from the ghetto of New Orleans, he just happens to be white. As a young teenager, he was already a hot session player as a guitar player. Then he had a finger shot off in a drug deal gone bad, so he switched to keys. He played on some of the funkiest records of all time, because not only is New Orleans the birthplace of jazz, it’s also the birthplace of funk, that heady gumbo of Caribbean and southern rhythms that is uniquely New Orleans. He took the name Dr. John after a Senagalese/Haitian voodoo medicine man, famous for selling his voodoo charms, called grisgris, not coincidentally the name of Dr John’s first, amazingly psychedelic funk record.
He's from New Orleans, and he was a guitarist but he got injured from a gunshot to one of his fingers, then turned to playing primarily keyboard. He's definitely one of a kind.
I saw Dr. John perform this live at a blues festival in Portland in 2016. I was grateful to be able to see him in person before he passed away in 2019 at the age of 77. My college roommate and I used to listen to him when we were in college in the late 60's.
Dr John is an amazing chameleon of blues styling. He's played with Sonny and Cher, the Rolling Stones, Frank Zappa, Neil Diamond, and many others as a top-tier studio musician. You hear his rolling piano in the background and it's unmistakable. Take a listen to the studio version of Leon Redbone playing "Hot Time in the Old Town Tonight" (another artist to check out eventually) and you'll hear Dr John on the keys.
Malcolm John Rebennack Jr. (November 20, 1941 - June 6, 2019), better known by his stage name Dr. John, was an American singer and songwriter. His music combined New Orleans blues, jazz, funk, and R&B.

I grew up in the 60s and 70s in the Bay Area and lived for concerts…any artist big or small was there to see perform. So the month before The Last Waltz I was at Winterland one night and that concert was announced…they listed a bunch of the artists and it would be on Thanksgiving with a big buffet for all, tickets $25! But all I could think of is “Well that’s just TOO expensive” so didn’t want to go haha. I laugh at that now. But actually I’d already seen most of the artists that did that show before anyway and had seen more stellar concerts than I could ever imagine going to over the years, so yeah I was jaded haha.

I had the pleasure of seeing him in concert several times. Such a versatile performer! I love his funk, but my favorite album of his is "In a Sentimental Mood", his take on Great American songbook tunes such as My Buddy, Making Whoopie (with Rickie Lee Jones) and the title instrumental song. Backed up by a full orchestra, it is absolutely gorgeous and the best version of this song I have ever heard. Besides his unique voice, he was a stellar pianist!
Spot on. Imho this was far and away his finest recording. He shines on, My Buddy, and his choices left me wanting him to do more from the American Songbook. New Orleans own, with a remarkable catalog.
Completely agree. His first album, "Gris Gris" is just astonishing in its deep swamp vibe, and "Gumbo" perfectly captures the feel of 1950s New Orleans. But "In a Sentimental Mood" showed him to be an all-time master, one of the great interpreters of song to grace this plane of existence. Saw him in the 70s, saw him in the 2000s, was spectacular at every turn. Boy do I miss him.
Born and raised in New Orleans. The New Orleans funk scene is phenomenal - you need to start with The Meters and Eddie Bo, then The Neville Brothers, Dr. John of course, then you can move on to our legendary piano players, Professor Longhair, Henry Butler and the list goes on and on. I remember a late night back in 1992, the Meters had reformed and we were trippin balls watching them play at Tipitinas, dancing our buts off and I look to my left at the cat jammin alongside of me and it’s Bill Murray. Back in the 70s Paul McCartney rented out the QE2 and had the Meters play a show. The Meters are the funkiest band, next to P-Funk.
Glad you enjoyed Dr John! He was an amazing artist from New Orleans - you'll find many references to voodoo in his songs. His early album, Gris Gris, is an interesting trip through the local culture. Sadly he passed in 2019 but I had the pleasure of seeing him perform in 2015. His second line in New Orleans is on RUclips.

I had the pleasure of meeting Dr. John backstage at the buffet table at "The Hot and Spicy Food Festival" in Atlanta in 1993 or 94, I think. My band was playing one of the tiny stages, but we all got to enjoy the crawfish backstage! I was directly across from him, and when we made eye contact, I said, "It's such an honor to meet the one and only Mac Rebenak". He grabbed his chest like he was having a heart attack and said, "How's a kid your age know my real name?" with a big smile on his face. I said I grew up watching The Last Waltz over and over again, and I always really loved 'Such A Night'". He said, "That's groovy baby, that's groovy!". What a great memory! Oh Harri!!! Your reaction is priceless!!! That's one of the many reasons I love your channel. There is a reason why music is universal! Love from Texas!!!
I believe he's from New Orleans Luisiana in the southern part of the United States. Known for Mardi Gra and Jazz, along with the strange practices of Voodoo, and other Dark Pegan religious practices. This man was an odd fit to the Rock scene in the early 70s, but it worked really well. And yes, D. John had some real funk about him.
Yes Mr. Drummin! I've been so looking forward to this one! I knew Harri was gonna vibe on this one! Right up his alley! Nice shocker huh Harri. We're you expecting George Clinton and the Funkadelic...lol?! Dr John has an MD in Soul! Nice reaction Harri!
I've seen the Doctor play live twice, in Munich, Germany. Once around 1990 together with Johnny Winter, and the second time around 2010. He was awesome both times.
Yes the Dr. was very funky and quite white. He was also a New Orleans native who I had the pleasure of seeing many times. Seeing him perform was like attending a mini Mardi Gras and always always funky.
There's a lot of great comments about Dr. John below. I sat 10 ft. away from and I saw him in huge venues. He was always terrific and was the pre-eminent rock, funk, soul, pop, blues studio and live pianist in America. 'Right Place, Wrong Time' was such a smash hit that it led to the good Doctor being the highest earning artist in the world that year.

Dr John is a New Orleans icon, He’s one of the Funkiest men who ever lived. He lived and breathed New Orleans music which is rooted in African rhythms and yeah.....the whole city is one big ghetto really. So there’s that! I went to his second line after he died. It was huge. You should do a reaction to New Orleans 2nd line music or brass bands. Which he was associated with. He was a Mardi Gras Indian and very intrenched in Nee Orleans African American culture. And yes he was the Dr of Funk! He was called the “night tripper” and we miss him so much!!!!! RIP.
I grew up in New Orleans and while I was in college, we'd go to local bars and listen to him, the Meters, Irma Thomas, The Neville Bros and a host of Nola greats. The seventies in Nola were awesome!
I know I'm late to the comments, but the band here is George Porter on bass, Joseph Modeliste on drums, Leo Nocentelli on guitar, Art Neville on organs, and Allen Toussaint filling in, basically some of the best musicians New Orleans had at the time. Most of those guys were also the Meters check out Look-Ka Py Py if you haven't already, one of the foundations of funk music.

As far as connections to others, “The Night Tripper” is as unique an artist to be found anywhere. His catalog is absolutely worthy of a deep dive, that so perfectly represents the musical gumbo that is New Orleans, R&B, rock, zydeco and FUNK. Legend.
Malcolm John Rebennack Jr. , better known by his stage name Dr. John, was an American singer and songwriter. His music combined New Orleans blues, jazz, funk, and R&B. This song is certainly a perfect example of fusing these genres together and coming up with a unique sound.
I remember this coming on the radio late at night in the early 70s. I had my transistor radio with the little earpiece. What great music, what luck to be around as a teenager. That New Orleans funk is something else! I love the ultra funky guitar solo.
New Orleans... Dr John... almost all his tunes/fame are based on his New Orleans blues, jazz, funk, and R&B roots. He is not with us but left a lot of great music for us to all enjoy. .
A true funk meister and greatly missed! RIP dear sir. May I suggest Stevie Ray Vaughn, if you haven't heard him already. I'm really enjoying your reactions, so insightful.
This song never fails to get the crowd moving. If I recall, it was also on the soundtrack for the movie Sahara. Don't need a DNA test. Not close enough to be brothers, but we are ALL cousins on this one little world.

And yes he was the Dr of Funk! He was called the “night tripper” and we miss him so much!!!!! RIP.
Funk music always has lots of instruments with a fabulous beat, and of course great dance music.
Another good tune from him is "Such a Night"
Yes Dr. John is one funky mother.
I grew up in New Orleans and while I was in college, we'd go to local bars and listen to him, the Meters, Irma Thomas, The Neville Bros and a host of Nola greats. The seventies in Nola were awesome!
This is my favorite Dr. John song.
Dr. John is funk through and through. Got to get this CD off my shelf and play it again - Loud! N'Oleans, yeah!!!
Loved watching you love this song!!! 😀❤️
Love, love , love this one.
Dr John is the Night tripper. Thanks where the Funk comes from
This is why we love your videos. Thanks.
He’s the doctor of funk
oh ya man! this IS funky. Being a hard rocker in the day I really enjoyed DR John.
Isola Doctor John the night Tripper as I remember him with the Allman Brothers at the Beacon Theater in New York 1970s fabulous love you Harry God bless you and yours
Skydog and the Doctor on one billl.....you lucked out on that gig!
I thought they also called him: dr. John the Nighttripper. 🎸🎸🎶🎶🎶😄
He was also a studio cat....played on more recordings than you can imagine.
Man, you need to watch a live performance of him. This man is New Orleans Cool personified
Harri, awesome reaction!!!
I'm always impressed by what a good person you are. You consistently give credit where it's due and have very little negative energy
Saw him live in the 1970's what a fantastic night that was
I noticed the change in your face immediately and started laughing. Absolute confusion for a few seconds. Loved it.
White boys can't jump...but we can funk! Spread the love Harri😎🇺🇸
I remember this coming on the radio late at night in the early 70s. I had my transistor radio with the little earpiece. What great music, what luck to be around as a teenager. That New Orleans funk is something else! I love the ultra funky guitar solo.
"Too Funky!!" You're hilarious, Hari. Love it!
New Orleans... Dr John... almost all his tunes/fame are based on his New Orleans blues, jazz, funk, and R&B roots. He is not with us but left a lot of great music for us to all enjoy. .
Like Jean-Pierre Melville, he achieved the dream. He became immortal, then he passed on.
RIP to Doctor John A New Orleans Legend. We both use a cane, I wish I could get my hands on one of his.
A humorous & funky New Orleans song he did you would like: “How Come My Dog Don’t Bark When You Come ‘Round?”.
Yes! One of my favorite songs and was going to suggest it here. I think it was a remake, but I actually only know the Dr. John version.
A Classic, damn glad someone rember's him other than me.
A true funk meister and greatly missed! RIP dear sir. May I suggest Stevie Ray Vaughn, if you haven't heard him already. I'm really enjoying your reactions, so insightful.
This is one song that always got turned up when it came on the radio in my car. Funky is right. Ooooomphunky!
Dr.John is a legit New Orleans musician. Nuf said.
Dr. John The Night Tripper. Walk on Gilded Splinters!
😎😎😎 *New Orleans's, is in the House* 😎😎😎
This song never fails to get the crowd moving. If I recall, it was also on the soundtrack for the movie Sahara. Don't need a DNA test. Not close enough to be brothers, but we are ALL cousins on this one little world.
