If you were wondering where the sax player was until the end, he was the guy playing the organ. They were all multi-instrumentalists. Never a band like them before or since.
Played at my Brother's funeral...30 years it still hurts. Such a heartbreaking song. I know it's about losing a lover.. but to me..when Danko sings.. 'Makes no difference how far i go..like a scar the hurt will always show'..& "well i love you so much..its all that i can do..just to keep myself from telling you.. that i never felt so alone before"..man ..i can relate to that pain even the guitar is crying.😢thank you to the person that requested this & thank you for your reaction .you found the song soothing , we all get different feelings..me ..i get agony, loneliness..each word & each sentence...total freaking dispair.. Lol😊 did i go overboard with my emotions? You heard it differently ..oh well ..i guess.. it makes no difference. Just glad you played it✌
Also... pretty much every performance from The Last Waltz is pretty legendary... worth watching more for sure!
The Band were such a original tight genius band ,their musical intelligence will move humans as long as they are heard. ☮️
You can feel joy listening to it because the lyrics Robbie wrote were so amaziing, and Rick sings it with such feelings and soul, however the song is considered one of the best heartbreak songs of all times "and the dawn don't resuce me". I think most of us remember after a break up, we would get up in the morning and thinking things will be better, and then as the day goes on you realize they are not better the dawn don't rescue you! Robbie was in his twenties when he wrote this, some of his other master pieces he wrote in his early to mid twenties, he was an old soul.
This is The Band saving the very best for last ...The Last Waltz ! Incomparable and unbelievable quality of musicianship ..The Band !
Garth Hudson. Keyboardist. Sax an accordia
Mugs, glad you enjoyed it. There's just so much emotion in this song, and like "The Weight", it has an almost gospel feel. Pink Floyd "Us And Them" has amazing sax that trades off with the organ. It's another emotional song.
The Band were The Band, no one like them.
Robertson is the fourth member of The Band to die, August 2023. following Richard Manuel in 1986, Rick Danko in 1999 and vocalist/drummer Levon Helm in 2012. Keyboardist and organist Garth Hudson is now the group's only living member.
When you consider that Robbie Robertson also wrote "The Weight," the probability that THIS is his best song, makes you realize what a great songwriter Robertson was. RIP. Also, Rick Danko's lead vocal perfectly conveys the deep emotional content of this masterpiece. This is real music.
Rick Danko & "The Band" ripping your heart.
Listen to the lyrics, it is about a love affair gone wrong. Anyone that have loved and lost can identify with this song. And Rick puts all his feelings into it.
Chills every time.
When I heard the news that Robbie Robertson had died, the line "and the sun don't shine anymore, and the rain falls on my door", came to mind. They were all unique, but Robbie's songwriting and guitar playing was like no one else, and Rick's voice and soulful singing tears your heart out.
That marriage of Gospel & Blues is what gets me. Brother Guitar is home and Cousin Saxophone has come to play. Oh, yes!
One of the best groups ever. Never heard this THX.
Love this song and Rick Danko. I am glad you noticed how well they all blended their musicality into a unit, a BAND, THE BAND!
Robbie's guitar playing and Garth's sax, the back forth you just don't hear often or ever. Loved the entire concert, The Last Waltz.
Really loving your reactions. The Band is just so damn good.
