This is the group that other musicians listen to!! Truly one of the most unique and talented bands of our time! 3 lead vocalists, all wonderful! This is Rick Danko, but Richard Manuel and Levon Helm also sang lead. This is from the movie "The Last Waltz" and every music fan should own a copy! Dylan, Joni, Neil Young, Neil Diamond, Van Morrison, Muddy Waters, The Staple Singers, Eric Clapton, Dr. John, Ronnie Hawkins, Emmylou Harris, Paul Butterfield, Ringo, Ronnie Wood....hell everybody was there! I'd have a hard time narrowing my recommendation to one Band song, so I'll give you a few......."The Weight" "Ophelia" "The Shape I'm In" and the beautiful "Acadian Driftwood", but I promise you there are so many more. Hell, just make a song list, put it on the wall and throw a dart. I'll guarantee you hit a great song!
This song breaks my heart everytime. Especially now. Of course its the words that speak so much. I mean just look at this line.. "Now there's no love As true as the love That dies untold But the clouds never hung so low before" Whats more heartbreaking than a love that could have had a story, a wonderful story of romance, commitment, family and memories but ended before the happy ever got started. It goes untold. Thats when you start noticing everything is so heavy. Even the clouds hang a bit lower than ever before. The rain seems like a flowing of tears at your door. And you dont notice the sunshine due to the depression. The lonely deep isolation nearly drives one mad and crazy. Every corner seems to be haunted by that love lost. "Without your love I'm nothing at all Like an empty hall, it's a lonely fall Since you've gone it's a losing battle Stampeding cattle, they rattle the walls" The song places us at the scene in a cabin I think. Alone. With a thunderstorm beating at the doors and even the imagery of cattle stampeding is placed as the persons thoughts just beating his heads thoughts about that love. Rattling the mans very soul because since shes gone he knows its a losing battle to get back to normal. "And the dawn don't rescue me no more" Even a new day that comes doesnt let him forget. Theyll be no nee starts. His heart is crushed. A very moving song that mixes old western ideas with a crying voice from Rick Danko as he sings in that yearning amazing voice that he had. He has a tear in his voice. A pain. And it fits this song perfectly. Robbies guitar bites through the song ringing in the strain of the emotions within the words to express it in a way that the heartbroken pounds on the wall with the hurts of lost love. Levons drums plod to keep the beat of a man who has to throw love letters away in order to even cope. The drums set that feeling of barely feeling like lifting your feet to the next step due to the heaviness of the loss. One of the greatest sad songs ever written and the performance is lightning in a bottle of whiskey. Thank you for posting this one that no one else really does in reactions. If you get the chance go back and really listen to the words and bring them up to read them. Paints a powerful picture of the heart.
That is a wonderful description of this song. You really hit it and you are so right about Rick, he is my favorite singer from The Band (although I love all of them) love how he draws out the waaal.
Turning 70 soon and been listening to this song forever. They just don’t make music like this anymore. I know it sounds cliche but there aren’t any other words to how good this music is. The Band was just so talented.

THIS Song by Rick Danko (RIP BBE 🙏🏻💔) was ONE of my FAVE from this full video called "The Last Waltz" by Martin Scorsese!! You should watch the full concert!!
...and that is how a great band sounds when everything works together - love this performance so much! Get chills every time I hear it. Enjoyed your reaction!
The Band gets their name from starting out as the backup band for Rompin’ Romney Hawkins, followed up by backing Bob Dylan when he went electric. They are special in that there is talent all over the place instead of a star. The Weight, The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down and Ophelia are all great songs. Actually if you like them, it is hard to find a bad one.
They weren't his backing band at newport in '65 ... that was mike bloomfield, al kooper, and members of the butterfield blues band. They were his backing band for his 66 world tour, a year after he went electric.
@@dylanthompson8511 actually they didn’t, robbie and Levon were part of that crew but it was also Harvey brooks and al kooper, who are not from the band.
I read this description of Rick's voice "his voice was so plaintive achingly beautiful and it could bring a tear of the most hardened Hell's Angel". I love The Band love Robbie, Rick is my favorite singer from The Band. Not to take anything away from the others, they were all great.
I'm a huge fan of The Band, they are of my generation. Love all of them, however Rick kills it in this song, and Robbie and Garth at the end. Love your reaction, one of the best I have watched.
The interviews Martin Scorsese does with the band members, throughout the movie are worth watching all by themselves. Hope you can eventually cover all the guests who performed in The Last Waltz. Many people have said, including the artists themselves, most of their performances that night were the best of their careers. You’d be one to fully appreciate the movie.
Not only does The Band make me feel so many emotions, but those emotions are intensified by the American early 19th century atmosphere that adds a touch of nostalgia and history. The final touch.
Like it says at the very beginning of The Last Waltz..THIS FILM SHOULD BE PLAYED LOUD! Too bad you got a clip with such low volume. Anyway, great tune, great reaction. One of the most emotional live rock & roll clips you’ll ever find.🎸💥
Read them at weep, however the line that always gets me is "and the dawn don't rescue me". We have all been there, you get up in the morning and think it will be better, and then you realize that is not the case.
One of the all time greatest bands in the history of music ,the inventors of country rock , you should check out the last waltz concert movie that this is lifted from ,the best concert film ever made , directed by scorcese with lazlo Kovacs brilliant cinematography 💥
First time I heard this, I had been away from my love for a long stretch...it kinda tore me up. The line "And the dawn don't rescue me no more" always hit me, too. In most of my most depressive phases, I would at least have a bit of reprieve in the morning. I knew I really was hitting bottom when even the dawn didn't rescue me
We stole the bread also, the three amigos. We hurt 7/11 back in 73 on. We knew the guy couldn’t chase us and leave the store. The Band was Great, we probably consumed the goods while listening to,The Band.
they all get a chance to shine. never allowing one to be bigger than the other. Because they all could lead a band!!!! Extremely talented. first to be on the cover of Time magazine as musicians!
This is my favorite live performance of all time. That being said, this entire album/documentary is full of great performances. Neil Young doing "Helpless is another standout, Joni Mitchell's back up vocal puts it over the top.

Insane how people think Rick is the weak link. It’s obviously Robbie. Don’t get me wrong, his guitar playing is perfect for their sound but I’m sure a lot of guitarists could do his job. He does know Neil Diamond so there’s that.
No one in THe Band was the weakest link, less of all Robbie and Rick. Robbie wrote the lyrics and he knew how would do the song most justice, in this case Rick. Like Robbie said Rick would sing it with pouring all of his emotions into it, but still not make it come off as self pity. Both genioues Robbie and Rick. Love all The Band members, but have a soft spot for those 2.
Ok if you ever get the chance. React to a group called Goose creek symphony. I do not care the song. Their style goes from bluegrass, to folk, to country, or to rock. Whatever they feel like. So yeah pick a random song and react to them.
Love The Band, Levon Helm was the only one who could claim a legitimate southern accent ( loved his voice ). The other four band members are Canadians eh! Lol. You must try Up On Cripple Creek and The Weight. R.I.P. Levon Helm, Rick Danko and Richard Manuel.
None of The Band members are forgotten by me. I read Robbie's book last summer, was almost done when the news came he passed away. I then ordered 2 books from Amazon about The Band. Rick Danko is such an emotive singer. Glad to see him getting the respect he deserves.
Truly one of the best ever! The man with the stage fright, just standing up there to give it all his might.......

Oh, there’s plenty of cringe in The Last Waltz

So many great songs at this show. I love the Coyote Joni Mitchell does. And the back story between her and Neil young. Awesome.
Neil young said it was the greatest honour in his life to play with the band on last waltz.

Actually there is a full tilt horn section at the gig with the venerable Howard Johnson on tuba.
So fun that someone finally reacted to another song than The Weight! Id love to see some reactions to other The Band songs, this was gold.
