The Band was Bob Dylan's backing band for a long time, in addition to writing and performing their own songs, so they were pretty good at reading Dylan's mood and adapting to the changes and improvisations that came with playing with him.
"The Last Waltz", from beginning to end, one procession of artists performing classics. The added 'Tales of the Road' 'tween sessions is a perfect blend of rowdiness and melancholy. Did I say, "Turn it up!" ...definitely! If I may... Many Vets adopted 'Forever Young' as a tribute to the youth whose names appear on 'The Wall'. Glad to be able to say that I was at Watkins Glen in '73 when on the bill was The Band, the Allman Brothers and the Greatful Dead...was only 15 and a half when I made the journey from 'Jersey' up there to see them...
I love it that you love Dylan's Voice. I do too. It is textured and nuanced and unique, besides rough and twangy... I am always glad when you say how much you like it. YAY.
@@carojayess1723 I'm learning to like Dylan's voice. I always liked his lyrics, but felt his songs were better when performed by others, such as Richie Havens, Peter, Paul and Mary, The Byrds, and of course Jimi Hendrix.
Yeah the whole show is top notch. Dylan is notoriously tough to play with, he’ll change something up without telling anyone. The Band had recorded and toured with him, so they were pretty keyed in on him. That was a reprise at the end, they played it a few songs earlier too.
You really should try and watch the entire documentary "The Last Waltz"!! Some amazing musicians from that time join the band on stage in this farewell concert!!
Van Morrison has a great performance in this too (not to mention a fabulous outfit). If you like soulful stuff you’ll love him. The first time I heard him I’d have sworn he was a 300 lb black gospel singer, not a 5’5 Irish guy.
Was this from The Last Waltz? If so, Last Waltz was a farewell concert for The Band, a very successful group on its own, that was formerly Dylan's backup band. The Band was breaking up and invited several friends from the music world to play with them. Dylan was one of those invited to perform during the concert. Concert was filmed by Martin Scorsese and made into a documentary, called of course, The Last Waltz. Scorsese is an Oscar winning director of many well known movies including Taxi Driver.
Bro, youre a legend fr these Bob Dylan reactios, and the crazy thing is you havent scratched the surface. Someone recommend thos man Subterranean Homesick Blues by the way
Your comment "looks like they are all communicating", is spot on. Before they became The Band, Robbie Robertson, Rick Danko, RIchard Manuel, Levon Helm and Garth Hudson was Dylan's back up band. They toured all over the world in 1966. Then the Band (4 of them were Canadian) moved to Woodstock New York. Dylan lived there, and there were quite close. When The Band went out on their own, they always communicating, looking at eachother, hand signals. etc.
Bob Dylan won the Nobel Peace Prize for literature. Amazing song writer! And to see him on stage with The Band is super good! Thank you for this treat.
Dylan, as he often loves to do, played a song that they didn't rehearse ... you can see the momentary confusion when he starts playing Baby Let Me Follow You Down, but they had played that song on tour with him hundreds of times... picked it right up. Dylan is famous for changing things up and fucking with the band. I could link you to videos of people talking about it if anybody cared.
@@sjaakkielzog314 Here's Bob fucking with Susan Tedeschi, I saw an interview with her where she talked about this show, they had rehearsed a bunch of songs... but not this one... you can see her confusion and Tony Garnier explaining to her. ruclips.net/video/41ZyPLwA0S8/видео.html
That was indeed an intimate song about life to lift your soul and live your life and do good in your life, followed by a kick ass Rick song, just incredible how Dylan is unpredictable with the Band or any band behind him. Follows “ I Shall Be Released “ which was the last song of the Band and the movie “ The Last Waltz” : considered the best music/documentary ever. Thank you for posting Bob Dylan, the poet, the artist ❤
The Band was Bob Dylan's road band. They lived in a big pink how that was near Dylan's and they practiced in the basement. When Dylan was injured in a motorcycle accident and spent a year recovering, they became "The Band" and released their first album "Music From Big Pink." They have known each other, and played together, for at least fifty years.
You forgot to mention "The Basement Tapes", one of Dylan's best "albums", and the catalyst for "The Hawks" to truly evolve into "The Band", as you can hear from their future albums, their new "sound" was all inspired from the music Dylan and them made in that legendary basement. While everyone else was recording big bombastic psychedelic albums, Dylan and the Band brought it all back home with a more laid back, rootsy sound, that inspired Clapton to go solo and the Beatles to make the "Let it Be" album.
The Band was together for 16 years, then Robbie Robertson the main songwriter and kind of the leader, called it quits, he was tired of touring. 4 member reunited in the early eighties. Richard Manuel committed suicide in 86, Rick Danko died of heart failure at 56 in 1999. Levon Helm died in 2012, and Robbie Robertson 2023, only Garth left.
Hope you get a chance to find some old interviews of members of The Band talking about had much Dylan’s audiences hated the “new” electric Rock music he switched to. There’s a great piece of concert footage from where Dylan’s response to a crowd loudly booing them, was to turn to these guys and say, “play louder”.
I’ve seen him 3 times including once in a stadium and once in a small 5000 seat venue and we were 15 feet away. All brilliant and different. In person he is a mystical unicorn lol….The Dylan universe is a huge and diverse place.
It's interesting to see all the reactors really liking Bob's voice. His voice was joked about when he first became known, hit's on the radio and such in the mid 60's. The singers people were used to back then sang pretty, Barbara Streisand, John Gary, Peter, Paul and Mary, and the Beatles sang nice too. I thought he sounded funny first time I heard him in '66. Now I think he's a great singer.
Love “The Band” with Robbie Robertson, Rick Danko, Levon Helm, Garth Hudson & Richard Manuel who were the backing Band for Dylan when he went Electric back in the 1965/1966 and who also lived in Woodstock,Ny area in the late 60’s where the Wrote many songs together from the Big Pink House that some of them shared , lots of history and great music between these guys and Dylan
One of his loveliest pieces; have never seen video. It's been covered many times over the years, my favorites being Rod Stewart and Chrissie Hynde. Straight up winner 👏
Dylan is as old as the hills but he still tours. And you get your money's worth. Concert I attended a few years ago went on and on long after I thought he was wrapping up. The guy loves the stage.

As a huge fan of Dylan's voice, and someone who is used to defending it to the many, many people who can't stand it, I say BRAVO for your open mind and ears and heart! Like you said, he really knows how to use it. No it isn't a trained voice of perfection, it is one of emotion and character and honesty. As usual, great video! And yes, I agree with everyone suggesting you watch this whole movie. It is one of the all time great concert films AND music documentaries, no doubt. as Muhammad Ali was approaching a late career fight, they put together a montage of Ali, and played this song Forever Young in the background. and it just held you in the moment...
Forever Young was written for his children. You have to consider, Bob Dylan and the Band had toured together for ten years. This was the Band’s farewell and they knew it was the last time they were ever going to play together. Thad was Robbie Robertson on guitar, if you want to hear a jam like no other, off the same album, “The Last Waltz” Robinson and Eric Clapton have an incredible guitar duel on “Further up on the Road”

I recommend everyone tracks down the concert movie for The Last Waltz. Should be more than $20, and is a solid block of emotional driving music. You’ll smile, you find yourself dancing, you’ll laugh, and with a few tracks you’ll be in tears. Only concert movie I recommend higher it Talking Heads, “Stop Making Sense.” All sorts of fun on it, as the band, stage, and action literally build up than break down until it’s just one man playing you a song in his guitar. Do try to find the uncut one, as it has the TomTom club segment in the middle of the set instead of awkwardly at the end.
My respects to you Bob Dylan is an acquired taste which I love and I respect you for playing him. If you really want to see his genius he has a song that has so many bars in it iI consider that to be the first rap lyrics. “It's Alright, Ma”

He goes on record with Rolling Stones when they told him he would lose half his audience who liked his folk acoustic music guitar from the 60s and 70s he said “SO WHAT”. I wish we had more of that in these times
