I would love to see a viking style hand axe made out of basalt. It is a pretty stable stone, but quarts would be epic. Love the idea of stone artwork with modern tools, keep up the good work.
Just found your channel today. I love the fact we have almost the exact setup.for lapidary. I made a vertical lap using the diamond pads and it works like a champ. Love the stuff you are doing.
Beautiful design but I think you should have made a full tang knife with wood panels on the sides to make the handle. Using the stone for the rivets is a beautiful touch to tie it all together
Hi John! Good to hear from you. I'll try my best to stay on schedule this summer. You will see some ads on our videos soon because we just crossed the 4,000 hour watch time barrier. Goal is to be profitable this year. Thanks for watching.
Just found your channel today, and I'm loving what I see so far. I will say this, watching you cut is giving me an arrhythmia every time your fingers enter the saw path..
Interesting. I do wonder about safety precautions. It may all be different with stone working tools, but compared with what I am used to seeing with wood work, you seem to be light on the after - holding the rock while you drill into the end, and pushing it through or past a blade with your fingers instead of a pusher. It seems pretty risky to me.
While I have to admit that I cringe a bit when he gets that close to the business end of those kinds of tools having worked with them, I will say it's sometimes necessary or just more effective. Safety comes second to getting the job done in a lot of instances. Whether it should is arguable, but it's the way a lot of people view it. Some go their entire lives and never have an issue, and some end up missing digits. What really scares me is when I can see the stone jumping or climbing. Granted, they're grinding blades, but I've seen saws grab and mangle things out of nowhere, and it's not something you can plan for. All you can do is get out of the way.
I have practically the same equipment and the saws (continuous rim) will not cut you unless you really force your hand/fingers onto it. Worse injury I got over many years was a bad manicure.
I once made a knife out of a rock when I was like 8 years old. I carved it with much harder rocks. I still have it to this day. It's the size of a pairing knife, I just could never figure out how to make wooden handle for it.
Modern geologist, Ben, makes stone age tool! Cool looking knife. How long did it hold up? There are good reasons that stone age people used chert or obsidian, and other microcrystalline rocks for sharp tools, like knives. Weekly, I use the Pig-Rock shot glasses that you gave, and all of my colleagues and friends are envious. Thanks again, and keep up the interesting projects.
Next blade should be nephrite jade. That is an amazing stone to work with. Incredibly tough and will take a better edge. A stone handle takes it to the next level. Cheers!
I've just found your channel and like what you're doing. So I've subscribed. With that said. It would suck to see you loose a finger!!! Currently I work with wood and metal, not stone. But I do see similar-ish tools. Please use a piece of wood when working with such small pieces on your table saw. No, I don't always have the safest work practices. But I do have all my digits at the age of 48. So my comment is merely a suggestion. You're making some really nice things with great energy! Keep it up! Thank You Sir for all your time and efforts!
@@JohnDoe-uc5iu oh, well just goes to show what all I know. Which is debatable. Yet normally doesn't equal to a hill of beans. Thank You Sir for setting me straight!! No, I'm not being sarcastic. I've watched this video twice now. As for a suggestion of something to make from rock, how about a coffee scoop. Now THAT would be slick! BTW, recent subscriber here.
I don't think the thickness of the tang is the problem, id wager 2 months from the time when he made the knife if he's actually using it and washing it like its an normal knife that the adhesive is gonna let loose because its only a really short stone dowel holding the blade and the handle together plus the stain he used if its water based is actually toxic and doesn't seal or make the handle waterproof so its gonna act like a sponge and soak up all the bad bacteria and its gonna smell
new sub here Nice work! I found myself thinking, a reverse technology knife would be cool. stone blade, wooded guard and steel/aluminum handle with brass rivets.... anywho, well done.
nifty, this is cool, and from the looks of it your in ontario at least a little bit, im not big into rocks myself outside of geodes but im really into fossils :3 so i found you through the Eurypterid vid! pretty cool!
yo! I love your channel. My criticism is that the music doesn't fit the scenery. When I think geology, I don't think your music choices. Maybe some bluegrass and less quick-speed camera one-takes. Just cut the long parts out by showing a fraction of the time. I think you'd be a star!
Great job - keep it up :)! Sincerely wish you more and more various achievements. BUT, please, pay a bit more keen attention to the safety - use the pushing tools instead of your palm and fingers while cuting the stone. Try to construct some device to clamp the stone body from above or modify the existing vise on your table.
As I understand, a diamond saw like that is very unlikely to cut you. As someone who cut a good chunk out of his thumb with a table saw, I see cuts like this and cringe, but I have seen someone put their thumb directly on a rock saw blade as it was spinning. I dunno though, I don't have any hands-on experience with this type of tool. @Natural Stones, do you have an opinion on this?
Very helpful. I have a piece of Jasper that I would like to work with. I have a flat lapping machine and a 6 inch trim saw…. I don’t have a belt sander though. Do you think it’s still possible to make a blade from Jasper and use the Dremel tool to make the serrated edge once it is thin enough?

Mate, do you have footage of the time you chopped your fingers off? Cause you're sure losing some soon. Look at how close you put your hand to the blades. Insane!!
these types of saws are abrasive, not sharp, so it’s hard to cut yourself on them as you could with a table saw or bandsaw. it’s still kinda jarring to watch though
please make rock DICE!!!! like 6 siders at least but bonus internet points if you make a full play set (4 sider, 6 sider, 8 sider, 12 sider, 2x 10 siders (aka percentile), and a 20 sider!)
you should have used natural wood oil to stain your handle plus the handle looks really ruff and uncomfortable to use unless you super big hands and your blade should have been alot sharper. theres almost no swedge and the back of the blade is really chunky thick. i like what your doing but you gotta refine it a bit more. i really think you could have made a full tang knife with a hardwood handle maybe hickory or even redwoood and oil stained the handle with danish wood oil or tung oil and it would have turned out AMAZING. suggestion maybe try making stone mallet or hatchet if sharpening is difficult you should try sharpening stones and sharpen it by hand so you can concentrate on not chipping if it helps they make really useful axe sharpening pucks one side is 2k grit and the other is 6k grit im sure the stone will go through the grit faster but it will most likely keep and edge longer.
Hey that's a cool concept and videos. Do you think you can make usable throwing knives out of stones? if you can though, might as well make a decently large enough set! Hope to see it soon on your channel.

I love it how he just put is effing thumb right in line with that saw he uses.... if one of those rocks just decided to fail, have a crack or just fall out... kiss that thumb goodbye.. you're killing me man...
lapidary saws aren’t the same as your standard tablesaw/bandsaws, it’s abrasive as opposed to sharp and it’s significantly harder to cut yourself with them
