- I am so excited to show you this rock mug I made! I still can't believe I made a coffee cup out of a rock. This thing will never break that's for sure! It took many hours and a lot of trial and error. It's composition is some kind of igneous rock, if you can ID it in the comments I would greatly appreciate it. The way he is into it is great, a lot of people can't get into anything and they aren't the happiest folks. My other comment, why not just start with a 5" diamond hole saw and drill a cylinder out, work it from there.

Ride a motorcycle in the cemetery... well I've driven cars in the cemetery (usually to go visit the deceased or go to a funeral) so there's no reason you couldn't ride a motorcycle either I guess. Maybe not what you envisioned but it still counts technically.
Beer mug. Coffee is good, but beer is great. How about a beer stein made from Pig Rock? Challenge.

When I was in school to become blacksmith and stone masoner artisan, I made like 180 or so pendant ocarinas out of stone. Used certain very hard black stone for most of them. You should try to make potato or pendant ocarina, they sound so damn good when made out of stone and it's nice little challenge to figure out right tone/notes etc for each hole.

But... one still needs to get the inner core detached at the bottom . Fore the outside diameter, your idea would work. For the inside core removal, I think hid method is sufficient and suits the need.

For the next rock mug, my guess is that you will have an easier job if you begin by making the hole in the mug first.
Insert a slug of wood into the hole to fill it completely. So you can turn it between two centers.
Then grind the outside surface on the lathe using a diamond blade on an angle grinder.
Good idea, and after it's core drilled and plugged, the lathe could be used with external / live cutter heads for the outside.
This is basically the same as you mentioned, but I think of these things also, because I work on machines in a Granite shop, and I used to grind glass lenses also.
I wanted to reconfigure an old lens grinding machine to do these sorts of things.
Use a metal lathe and a carbide cutter. This angle grinder stuff is for children.

I don't know enough about the properties of carbide vs granite etc.
Except that carbide is very tough material. I've had concrete drill bits(carbide tips) last for amazingly long periods of drilling.
But I'm guessing that a fresh rock with big angles and edges would be difficult for me to avoid snapping tool holders and things.
My thoughts exactly, had my experiences with this work and there's no real alternative to this

I made a pretty big sink out of a granit rock I took with me from the beach. The feeling when you complete a project out of something THAT hard is incredible.

@@naturalstones4529 Not sure whether you've looked too deeply into making another mug, but if you still haven't then may I reccomend (gently) drilling a pilot hole in the middle of the piece so that you can get a lathe tool down in there to A: make it easier to cut the "negative space" out, and B: get a more even, smooth finish on the intside?

Your technique is genius. Concerned that the stone might be of questionable material for food purposes. Could you do a video on carving a stone chain?
Armchair geologist here! A little hard to tell from a video, but going by the color and texture, it looks like he used a chunk of granite. People have used granite as cutting boards, counter tops, and all sorts of other things for centuries; just like marble it's food safe as long as you keep it clean.

@@pi198273 A few yeah, mostly those containing poisonous metals. Cinnabar, for instance, is a very pretty red-orange but contains mercury and is toxic. Definitely wouldn't want a mug made of cinnabar.
@@pogostix6097 To me it looks like this one is Halmstad, which is a Migmatite, a metamorphic Material.
Pogostix Never use stone for a cutting board. It will dull the knife in no time.

Since I found out you can melt rock with a fresnel lens, I've wanted to see someone do a rock carving using one. That would be epic I think.
you can melt rock many ways not just with heat, had you stayed in school, and took grade 10 chemistry you would know this

This is how we made cups in the old days. We didn’t have fancy stuff like wood or science just rocks and more rocks. Kids have it to easy these days.

You are not forgotten or ever will be forsaken. You are special. You are unique. You are one of a kind. You have been reserved for this time and The Lord needs you on His side.

I have a suggestion for you. When I saw how thin those shavings of rock are, it occurred to me that you could make a full deck of cards out of very thinly sliced stone.

Between my wife and I we are always breaking coffee cups.
Usually happens when the coffee cup hits the floor.
The other problem is finding a cup that fits my large hand.
A stone mug could be made proportional to the hand that will be using it.
It could also dent the floor or break a toe!

Great coffee mug! Though is anyone else a little concerned in the high speed footage when he is running the wet saw and the water splashes up on the red plastic housing with his hand close to the blade? He's a great craftsman, the high speed footage with the splatter of red so quickly appearing just reminds me of power tool disasters I have witnessed.

Tile saws don't draw blood that easy... I know from experience. I will get on that airplane next haha

The rock is quite beautiful when polished. I love stuff carved out of rock. I got a Chinese stone carving of a couple of fish swimming together that once belonged to my great grandmother. It's ok.

It's funny that I saw a guy turn a rock into a lampshade that actually let light through, but your cup video was really fun to watch. I think I liked your project because it seems like I

Mica is really good for that and was supposedly one of the early translucent window materials. Horn was also used at times for things like lanterns.
Idk how feasible this would be but i would love to see one in basalt with a more rough hewn look, especially if it was made out of a solid block 🙏
Its definitely possible, but you open yourself up to more toxic metals the finer you go, plus possible holes and brittelness.

@@Drewsky840 I'm interested, because I think I want to do it, but the right way. Toward that end, I googled "stone wear and food safety" and got a hit from stack exchange. I'm not sure if you can put links here, but the url includes "What kind of stones should not be used to grind food," so googling that sentence ought to produce stack exchange as the first hit if you're interested. Anyway, the question was this:
"I found a pink slab of stone with a nice dip in the middle and thought of using it as a mortar for grinding spices. Are there any stones whose makeup could potentially leach toxins?"
Answer:
"Granite, marble and jade are all common stones used for mortar/pestle combinations. There are probably many other stones that are safe, but you want to avoid the following:
anything that is porous such as sandstone or dolomite
anything that will break apart easily, mainly sedimentary stone
anything that might expose you to metal toxicity such lead or cadmium
anything with organic matter attached
anything that reacts chemically to whatever it is you're grinding"
I don't know about the credentials of the author of the answer, but it's enough to suggest concern. I still want to do this (thinking about it, anyway), but I'll stick with decorative pieces not meant for food use.
Assuming I can do anything that truly qualifies as decorative.
I'd coat the inside with a food safe epoxy, like you'd do if you make a wooden tankard, to ensure it's safe to drink out of.
@@elizabetholiviaclark Just from the look of it that is probably a type of granite. Seeing as what you said reccomended three types of metamorphic rock and that rock in the video appears to be metamorphic he should be alright.

this is definitely a mug I would preheat because it's got a lot of thermal mass and will suck the heat right out of a fresh cup
This is awesome. I have to ask though if there's any risk of the rock fragmenting off or containing substances that might leech into the beverage? If it's completely safe I'd love to own stone mugs.

Depends on the rock. Granite is probably about as inert as one can get. Water will win at eroding/dissolving stuff - but not in your lifetime.
Also, those are tile saw blades. Not carpenter blades with nasty teeth. The blade is smooth with diamond dust mushed into it. Nasty abrasion maybe, but it won't take your finger off. Gloves are probably sufficient protection. sawstop also probably wouldn't work since the water all over the blade would trigger false positives.
I agree completely. Tile saw is nothing like wood or metal saw blades. The worst that you will get is an abrasion cut. While you could probably take a finger off, it's because some has it held there for a while until it finally gets through it
@@eh42 The concern is rocks containing lead, arsenic, mercury, cadmium, etc. All pretty common.
I'll take the stone utensil every day over plastic or aluminum.

This is one of the coolest things I’ve seen. I hated watching you grind down the wet handle on the saw. I wouldn’t be able to do that without losing something 🥵 Is there a special glue you had to use so the handle doesn’t break off?

Awesome video! Seeing that you built your own rock saw from a tile saw I'm wondering if a radial arm saw would work better? The stone would be stationary and you would be moving the saw instead. I can't wait to see what other creations you come up with!
Thanks! That is a good idea but im not sure how to get the cost down on a radial saw. Also there are so many moving parts made from steel that might rust so Im not sure if it would be worth it to try. I am thinking about building an industrial band saw with diamond tipped blade so U can cut large slabs!

A radial arm saw is probably the most dangerous tool ever made. Stay away from it. It's so bad that there is a organization that buys these saws just to get them off out of the hands ( that is if they still have their hands) of people before they lose their finger or hands. I believe they pay $150.00 per saw.
@@shoppe99 I have 2 radial arm saws, I have had them for over 10 years. Any power tool in the wrong hands can be dangerous, in some cases the radial arm saw is safer than other power tools in my shop
