  • I designed, carved, and installed a 25000 granite boulder tub that holds around 250 gallons of water. Complete process from excavation to installation. This project took around 7 weeks of labor, over the course of 6 months.

    I love that this is presented with such modesty when it is by far the most impressive tub build you are ever likely to see, the humility is as impressive as the build. The attitude of saying "I was more inspired than I was threatened" is good advice on how to create a good aptitude for anyone in any endeavour. Fantastic results and approach
    I have seen rocks with similar rocks discarded by quarries because cracks devalue them, sometimes you will see them spray painted with an orange box around the crack I guess so no one takes it by mistake. Really impressed by the repair and sure it hold out perfectly fine

    • @jameslostlen
      @jameslostlen  2 месяца назад +12

      Thank you so much! I do feel modest about it, at the end of the day I am just a curator and not the artist. I adore the natural beauty of the local stone here, and hope to make many more functional pieces that are modified just to the point of function. Maintaining the original skin and not over-polishing is something I hope to be known for. Appreciate the kind words on the crack, I think it will be ok! I would avoid using a piece with any cracks next time, I feel grateful to learn a valuable lesson without catastrophe. 🙏

    This is INSANE! I own a Fence and deck company and have come across 2 boulders like that. Granite and Massive. They were the most annoying rocks I have ever dealt with.
    1 I had to core drill (it ate up 2 carbide bits so I started renting them instead) and fill with expansion mixture, which sort of worked so I bought a set of rock splitting wedge and shims. It was a complete fkin nightmare and took WEEKS to bust down small enough to have a crane come in a pull it out in 8-10,000 lbs pieces.
    The other I used a saw and Jack hammer to make a flat spot that I could bolt the post to the rock lol (I learned my lesson the first time!) 😂

    ❤ 2 years ago I bought an old granite stone house in the Algarve mountains and started to restore it. In the living room a granite boulder showed up over floor level and we had to break it away...WHAT A WORK ! The material was unbelievable hard...Respekt for your work from Portugal 🇵🇹

    great job and great video! Granite is a mix of quartz, feldspars, and micas. Quartz is a 7 on the Moh's hardness scale. I think the better route to be taken would had been drilling a series of 1 inch holes evenly spaced close together. this is how they typically remove blocks from the quarry. 👍👍

    • @bigbattenberg
      @bigbattenberg 9 месяцев назад +3

      In fact it is also used in hogging out metal blocks. Drilling is the most efficient operation.

    • @jameslostlen
      @jameslostlen  9 месяцев назад +3

      I know a lot of stone carvers and all use this method. That method sounds like the way to split, not selectively extract. I’d be all ears for a better method but I trust the guys that have done this for decades :)

    • @bigbattenberg
      @bigbattenberg 9 месяцев назад +3

      @@jameslostlen I'd say core drilling would be the way to go. The advantage of stone over metal with (blind hole) core drilling is that with the former, the core can be removed by breaking it off. One thing however is that for (deep) drilling operations a solid clamping surface is required. Like a metal plate with pre-cut guide holes temporarily expoxied in place or something similar? Depending on the drilling machine interface obviously.

    • @brushmasterspaintingfranchise
      @brushmasterspaintingfranchise 8 месяцев назад +2

      @@jameslostlen understandable. There are many ways to complete the task. I am an artist and have carved many mediums. hard brittle surfaces should be cut by perforation. Your way is great too.

    super awesome. i can imagine how nice it must feel to relax in it on a hot day. my main concern is about 10 years down the line that rebar my start to rust and expand, adding more cracks to your tub.

    • @jameslostlen
      @jameslostlen  9 месяцев назад +3

      I totally overlooked that when focused on the crack. I wish I had used stainless. Hoping to totally seal off the crack all around to prevent the water from rain or the tub entering, then in this desert heat and dry climate I won’t worry about the rust - it is not an issue out here unless in standing water or deep underground. Thanks for the heads up!

    A friend I used to mountain bike with rigged up a shower in his back yard, just ran a hose and attached a pipe to a tree with a shower nozzle at the top.
    We were able to shower outdoors after getting really dirty and sweaty in hot central texas summers.
    The water was all cold, but if he had hot water there were wouldn’t have used it.
    What I’m getting at is that it was so much more refressing showering outdoors than indoors.
    I wonder if the outdoor tub will also feel as great.
    What a cool project. Color me jelly.

      @jameslostlen  9 месяцев назад +10

      The algorithm gods have smiled upon me :) I would use a bigger saw, and cut more like the last long slices you see later in the video, cubes are not necessary. Learned a lot and tooled up quite a bit during this. I’m not sure sandstone would be rigid enough or hold water but I am very unfamiliar with it other than lake Powell and rock climbing in red rocks…

    • @09conrado

      Sandstone would need a sealant for else it would run dry in half an hour or more, depending on the type of sandstone

    My wife and I bought a 54.5 acre property on the side of a mountain in north central Washington state and had a custom built home built into the side.
    On the north end of the house we built a waterfall from the rear of our house to the front.
    At the bottom the water flows into a used hot tub. We cemented rocks around the edge of a hot tub so it looks like a natural pool at the bottom of the waterfall.
    The natural slope of the land made it easy.
    We then built a “gazebo” over the “pond” at the bottom so that in the heat of the summer we can sit in the cold well water to relax. We’ve planted Evergreens around the “pond” for more privacy.
    The Pond seats 6, so we have enough room for friends when they come over.
    On the south side of our house we’ve built retaining walls into the mountain side so we have flat garden beds and next to the house we built stone walls to and put bottomless galvanized raised beds (they look like watering troughs for livestock), so my wife can enjoy her Rose garden.
    We have a small naturally flat area of our property where we’ve planted Dwarf and 3/4 Cherry, Apple and Donut Peach trees.
    We grow almost all of our fruits and veggies with enough left over that we freeze dry instead of canning.
    We barter enough of our freeze dried fruits and veggies with my wife’s family ranch (in Montana) for a pig and 1/2 a beef every year.
    The growing season in Montana is too short for the fruits and veggies that her parents love.
    Bartering with them is a win win for all of us and my wife gets to see her parents and other family members yearly when we make the 12 hour drive to their 17K acre ranch.
    They have a butcher shop at the ranch so our meat is cut and wrapped.
