Woodturning - The Cedar Root
Embed
- Published on Mar 12, 2026
- Root I dug up during July 2022. Initial turning happened towards the end of 2022, then it was left for 12 months to dry. I've been dropping on and off this now for the last few months but its finally finished.
Will be listed in my website this weekend.

My Dad worked in a woodshop when he was first married, and had no money on their 1st anniversary, so turned a stump (because his boss said it was rubbish so he could have it) into a fruit bowl to give my mum. It still has fruit in it on the kitchen table 58 years later, even though Dad passed away 16 years ago.
Thanks for the video and making think of my very skilled Dad.
The first anniversary is paper, so your dad’s gift fits the theme!
I have never, in my entire stupid corporate career, produced anything half as skilled, useful, or beautiful as this. Bravo, sir.
Well... get busy and make it happen!!
@JDizaster thanks 👍
Skilled? Yes. Beautiful? Absolutely. Useful? Fuck no. Who needs this? Literally nobody. I can see WANTING something like this, but nobody needs this.
It's not stupid. It's provided for you and your family, that's what matters most.
@Blandge There is a difference between useful and urgently needed. You can store whatever in it so it might be useful for somebody.
Sir, not only are you a craftsman, you are an artist.
Thank you very much!!
Really really nice!
I am with you on that one👍
Turning cedar...holy shit the workshop must've smelled incredible during the first rounds of this ❤
He even put some in the oven, imagine the smell
I could smell the cedar and the soil, as I watched the video.
Holy Schnikes! The artistic ability is one thing, but the physical challenge is quite another. I injured my wrists, hands, and fingers just watching the video.
Fapping to this is weird...
And certainly your eyes and face if not wearing proper protection while watching this video.
That is incredible
Me too. It was pretty hot.
The algorithm brought me here, and I’m glad it did! Fantastic stuff!
That was absolutely phenomenal! My father has been a wood turner for many many years however he has dementia and is very very old. I am going to bring this video to him and broadcast it on his television and watch him sit back and I guarantee you this is going to stimulate his brain! Truly fantastic work sir. ❤️
Hope he enjoys and thank you very much!
My old man was fascinated by woodturning, and lathes in general. Didn't know the first thing about any of it, so went out and got himself a copy of 'The Amateur's Lathe' by L.H. Sparey (first published in 1948). He sat in the living room for the entire weekend and read it from cover to cover, then went out to the workshop and got busy. He made some amazing things out of both wood and metal. Me, I have all the artistic sensibility of a damp sponge. I can barely use a cordless drill without taking someone's eye out.
Nice work. You've got some serious talent.
Hahahahaha. Made me laugh. 😃
It comes easier for some people than for others. I absorbed a LOT from my dad's skills.
I don't think I've ever said "wow..." so many times in my entire life as I did in the last 90 seconds of this video. Incredible work.
Thank you very much, glad you enjoyed it!
That piece is out of this world beautiful.
That might be the most amazing thing I’ve ever seen created on a lathe. Great job!
Thank you!
Just got my Laguna 1836 lathe, have all the chucks, and gouges. Now all I need is the talent 😂. You sir do amazing work!
You can do it!
@MattJordanWoodturningtechnically you don't know that..
Practice makes perfect.
Your comment was 7mo ago. How are you doing with it and any suggestions?
I’m definitely getting better. Learning the proper angles and letting the gouge do the work are probably the best lessons I’ve learned. Couple of those lessons have set things flying though😂
Usually not a fan of epoxy in woodworking but you pulled it off beautifully. Got to be the most satisfying thing in the world to apply the finish and gloss after creating that.
Still not a fan. Huge respect for the skill but I think resin looks garbage in this case too.
I was totally stumped by your craftsmanship and skills!
i see what you did there 😀
Ha Ha!😂
I could watch this guy at work all day. Such a skilled craftsman.
Absolutely insane one of the most beautiful pieces I’ve ever seen
You have outdone yourself, that is amazing!
Gorgeous. One of the best woodturning pieces I have ever seen!
Thank you! Cheers!
Wow that is just absolute stunning excellence quality and you have a super skill 👌 Thankyou for the opportunity of watching this, I'm totally blown away 👍
More than deeply felt.
That is absolutely gorgeous. I think that’s one of the best jobs of turning. Anything I’ve ever seen.
Thanks so much, glad you liked it!
Amazingly Beautiful ! So much Work ! Wow !
I am blown away by your craftsmanship.
Just gorgeous! Hats off to you my man.
Wow! Incredibly beautiful!!
Amazingly beautiful!!! You have real talent.
In every aspect, the form, the color, the patterns in the cedar, it's Gorgeous! 🤩
Thank you and sending blessings Matt! 💜
That's just beautiful. Awesome work sir.
Every time I watch one of these, I want to invest thousands of dollars into setting up my wood turning lathes. But I don’t think I could produce anything as magnificent as this.
You would know about it when that started spinning
Breathing all that plastic dust must be horrible for a person anyway.
Buy a second hand lathe and see how you get on!
Breathing any dust is not good, Hardwood dust has been classified as carcinogenic, while all wood dust a cause of COPD for years now, that's why I wear a respirator for protection, have extraction and room filtration.
I'll get to my impression of the work, but let me say that this video was so well done. No long intro, just got right to it. No music, I like to hear the actual sounds happening in a video. Great use of fast forward and skipping to the next thing without missing any of the pertinent details. Now.. the patience, artistry and craftsmanship that went into this piece is phenomenal. I'm thinking it must take years to master. I hope he charges at least $500-$1000 dollars for the work. Edit, I realize that $500 - $1000 is low balling the value. I'm sure that people who don't appreciate the work would still see $500 as too much. Luckily, there are people willing to pay top dollar for pieces of art like this.
I was thinking way more than that. I just paid $1000 to have 2 struts replaced in my car.
@ you're right about that, now that I give it a second thought. I think to a great extent the general public doesn't appreciate that you're not just paying for materials and labor, you're paying for all of the unpaid hours it took to learn the craft.
Trust should easily be a $3k piece. The labor is 90% of that cost.
Gorgeous work!
@libertyoak4925 Definitely, on the 90%, most craftsman know where to find inexpensive (relatively) materials. If I had the money, I'd pay $3000 for that. I pet sit for about a dozen very wealthy clients, and they often pay top dollar for items like this.
I was thinking he should put a pretty hefty price tag on it because it is an amazing piece. I was so glad that I watched the video because it made me appreciate just how much work goes into not to mention how much creativity he has. I don’t think enough people really appreciate true art and are willing to pay for the amount of work that goes into a piece. I am thankful that there are some out there that will because he deserves what ever $$$ he gets for this piece.
That is a beautiful piece of work. I can’t imagine how many hours went into that either.
really reminds me of land masses and ocean. really nice piece of work.
This was randomly recommended to me and I’m glad it was. Cool vid
Beautiful. What a pleasure to watch - you really are incredibly skilled - a true artisan.
Absolutely beautiful.
That looks amazing. Thanks for the video
Great eye, mind, hand coordination
THAT is amazing. Well,done sir.
This color combination is so great!
Very cool! Thanks for posting.
Just 1 word: MASTERPIECE!!!!
Outstanding!!!
Thank you!!
That's plain sick bud. Unbelievable skill. So great.
I have a new appreciation for cedar roots, I used to loathe digging them out of the yard! How I see how beautiful they can be! I wish I could have sent you all the ones I dug up to see what you could do with them, but that was 20 years ago now. Marvelous piece and process!
Man you turners have some talent. That's beautiful
WOW!! That's a masterpiece!! Thanks for sharing 👍🏾
Your very welcome my friend!!

All of this is amazing. I'm new to this channel but I was shocked when the resin comes out looking like turquoise colored marble!
Gorgeous, stunning, great skills!
WOW!! Someone has a lot of time, tools, skills, money, patience. Impressive. Looks very nice. 👍
And even if you have all those things but not the idea….you have no hance
Absolutely beautiful. What artistry❣️
Most of the time, these famous woodturning videos are mostly resin turning !!!

Stunning! Absolutely beautiful!
Very nice vase! Looks like a dried out world yet with beautiful vibrant oceans!
Beautiful.
Thank you!
Brave guy wearing that ring while doing this type of work
The way you apply your skill and knowledge to such "simple" materials is amazing. What a beautiful piece of art
The wedding ring is a bad idea dude
Get a ring guard. Might save your finger some day.
I’m divorced - can confirm
That’s all you took away from this huh? he’s a big boy shhhh
@Lennart_Gerkensumthing like that, not common but you never want to risk it
I use a silicon ring
Wow. Truly amazing!
Over the top and outdid yourself this time.
always love your videos
Amazing. Beautiful art!! But, wearing a metal ring while using a lathe... Google Ring de-gloving a finger.
NEVER google while using a lathe.
Google googling while lathing (after you've finished with the lathe)
Stunning, beautiful artwork ❤❤❤
almost a shame to do this in color... imagine it being clear and polished so much that you could see through into the vase itself.
I know right, I did clear and volcanic rock for my pop effect on a large 6-person custom card table that rocked the house!! Love using clear, and letting the wood take center stage👍🏻
Brilliant work 💪🏼
Thanks!
Man that is magnificent..!!
Compliments!!
Beautiful, just beautiful. 🙂
And the smell of cedar is a bonus.
Thanks Gary
Another totally unique work of art. You are a true Master Craftsman. Love your videos Matt. Can't wait for the next one.
More to come!
That's fantastic. I don't usually like the resin and timber together, but this is one in a million!
First time watching something like this. What a work of art, and whatever you sell this at, it is not enough. Job well done.
I was enjoying this video until the Blue colored play-doh was introduced. Unoriginal, generic, unnatural.
Lol probably why he makes more than you.
Outstanding wood working!
I can imagine the smell in your shop, and it is amazing!
Nicely done
That’s outstanding work that is
Привет !! Это шедевр!!! Рекомендую для расточки резец Брюкнера , очень удобно и без нагрузки на руки ))
Now that! Was worth waiting until the end! What a beautiful piece! Very jealous of your skill! 💪
That's a work of art, Matt! Stunning piece!!! 😮
Stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
Brilliant result, Matt.
Nice work
