A white wedding is a traditional English marriage. The term comes from the color of the bride's dress, which symbolized virginity and innocence. It starts to make more sense after what you read about his sister being pregnant while getting married. These days, nobody cares so much, but the traditional white wedding comes from an era of different values and morals. The whole song is sarcastic, and the term "shotgun" wedding, which you heard in the lyrics, refers to a marriage where the groom is essentially escorted down the aisle by the bride's father with a shotgun pointed at his back to ensure he doesn't back out of it. Shotgun weddings were a father's way of communicating to young men that they would be forced to grow up and do the right thing by marrying the pregnant woman and taking care of both mother and child. I think the song is a parody on both his sister's marriage, and the changing values in the 80s. Especially in the rock and roll music industry.
One of those timeless songs and videos from the 80s. It never bores listening to it. White wedding itself means the ride weds in a white dress which symbolizes virginity. A "shotgun wedding" means marrying while already pregnant. For me Ido had a string of fantastic songs throughout the 80s and early 90s. Still love them.
Great reaction! Billy Idol's "White Wedding" explores themes of rebellion and rejection of traditional values, focusing on disillusionment with the idealized concept of marriage. The video, filled with gothic and punk imagery, reflects a darker, anti-establishment tone, symbolizing the breakdown of purity and innocence associated with weddings. The song can also be seen as Idol's personal commentary on societal expectations and personal freedom.
This song is about a girl he loves who got married to another guy while Billy was still smitten with her although he got inspired to write this song after his sisters’ wedding
Billy’s younger sister got pregnant, and had to get married. She used to “idolize” Billy, but he hadn’t seen her in a long time and felt a little guilty and angry at the whole situation.
Ok. So you want to rock with Billy Idol. The video for TO BE A LOVER is your ticket yo ride. I can't wait for your reaction to this song. I guarantee your eyes will pop when he seduces you with his Elvis voice and a move that will knock you off your feet. And then, there are these great hits. DANCING WITH MYSELF, MONY, MONY, and CRADLE OF LOVE. He's all yours. If you can handle him. Keep going and enjoy the music.
At this point..im feel that YOU are part now of the idol legion and i know you are still resistant! ..but one or two night you will discover another feel of his art and energy THAT NOW just shake your shoulders but it will shake more life 🍀☺️☕🎹👄🎷⚡🌥️🌛🌟✨🌤️ If you were 🚫 born at the 80s ..you cant not resist!. Lets make the time to complete the conversion ☺️✨💠 Thanks 🙏 for react to Idoll .
For our European friends, the lyric "shotgun" has a common menaing in the U.S. (nothing to do with violence, in this context). Can you guess what it means, and why he would add it to this song?
Hi Inna! I can't get my eyes of the screen when I see your reactions either!❤🥰😍 Banger! Some more Billy Idol songs: Mony Mony, Dancing With Myself, Cradle Of Love, Flesh For Fantasy, Shock To The System. '80s music is awesome!
BILLY started his music career as lead singer in a punk band called Generation X. My favourite Billy songs are not the usual songs ,1) SPEED from the movie 2) Body Snatcher album track that Rock's hard 3 ) YELLIN AT THE CHRISTMAS TREE probably one of the greatest seasonal songs ever. Please check them out all are great energy.
The interpretation I heard is SUBSTANTIALLY different from what’s been said here. I heard the song is about a serial killer who had previously set aside his murder streak, but has now decided it’s time to “start again”. He’s singing to his shotgun, his “little sister”.
I think all these explanations here are way off target. Billy Idol is no choirboy. All these explanation are so vanilla, they don't begin to get into the story he was telling. What he's talking about is a troubled brother and sister who probably grew up rough and went from home to home sharing beds at times (ah-hem!). She ended up getting married before but she's so messed up it didn't work. Now she's trying it a second time trying to create a normal life for herself but her last foray ended up with her taking an overdose. Now she's back at the alter trying to make it work again when her brother (Billy Idol) shows up at the church after being away for a long time and says to her, open your eyes and look at reality. You're screwed up and so am I and the only one you're meant to be with is me. Any dream you have of a normal life is just going to come to ruin like the last one. Note the sarcastic tone when he's saying, "white wedding." Note the steamy sexuality in the song. Note that she is not walking down the aisle with Billy Idol. He shows up and takes her. When he says, "little sister," he means it. The bloody finger represents the toxic nature of their relationship but the brother knows they're trapped in it. Note the home she's dreaming about living in but the wreck it becomes. Idol made some cryptic reference to what the song was about that only explained where the "shotgun" came in. But it explains very little afterward. I wouldn't trust the various explanations you read online. They just fall flat for a guy like Billy Idol who traveled very much on the dark side.
Thank you so much for watching
