Totally agree! And people forget that he has worked with pretty much all great directos like Kubrick, Oliver Stone, Scorsese, de Palma, Spielberg, both Tony and Ridley Scott, Anderson, Coppola; I keep hoping he works with Tim Burton and Tarantino 😀
@@Davon85J My suspicion is that at least part of the reason for doing this is that he's wanted to make as many action stunts as possible before he gets too old for them. Of course, he can still do action movies even after that, but he won't be able to do the stunts, and you know he likes doing that.
Glenn Frey is who played the Cardinals' general manager in this movie (the guy who stood up Tom Cruise at the restaurant). You may or may not know it but you've been listening to him sing iconic classic rock songs for over 50 years. He was one of the lead singers of the Eagles & one of their main songwriters.
I remember when this came out they played that Bruce Springsteen song with movie dialogue running through it, on the radio. That's how often one had to hear "you had me at hello" and "you complete me."
@@LuckySmurf - Mid budget romantic comedies rarely get made anymore beyond the Hallmark Channel. And they're rarely released to theaters with a decent budget or famous actors. And now when they do get made, they're often lacking in charm. (I personally think it's that we've gone from that warm film aesthetic to the cold "Netflix standard" for cinematography.)
What I like about the ending is that not only does Jerry still have Rod as a client, and got him a great new contract, but we see him chatting with Troy Aiken, who it seems has read his Memo about the business. What this tells us is that Jerry has now fully embraced his Memo and has put it out there for a small selection of top talents to read. His business will grow, just not to an absurd corporate level. He'll have a handful of clients, probably all STUDs like Aiken, that he and his wife handle personally for all their business needs, focusing on a good relationship between them, just like his Memo stated.
Favorite fun movie fact, this is the second movie that Bonnie Hunt had done with Tom Cruise. When they were filming this she had to remind Tom that he had a small part in Rain Man. She was the waitress in the diner when Raymond counted the spilled toothpicks.
"SHOW ME THE MONEY!!!" Fun Fact: The story for this movie was reportedly based on real-life Orange County agent Leigh Steinberg (who makes a cameo in this movie as Troy Aikman's agent, which he was in real life). Steinberg's ex-partner David Dunn tried to lure away many of Steinberg's clients, just as Jay Mohr's Bob Sugar does in this movie. Another Fun Fact: Jonathan Lipnicki showed up on the set one day telling everyone that "the human head weighs eight pounds". Writer, produce and director Cameron Crowe liked it so much he wrote it into the script. Also, Regina King was really pregnant during the filming of this movie.
Bonnie Hunt plays the sister and I Love Her!! She is so good!!! Wish you would check out her movie: “Return To Me” with her and Minnie Driver and David Duchovny and Jim Belushi and a great cast of side characters!! Romance , second chance at love! Bonnie co wrote it and directed it!!
@TBR Schmitt the wrap up of you and your amazing wife Samantha are always as good as the reactions themselves. Was a treat to see you both enjoy this classic. So many great characters and actors just eating up the scenes
My favorite Tom Cruise performance. I think this movie is the quintessential American movie, with all the good and the bad this means. But it's very inspirational and the scene where Jerry drives and looks for the right song to sing along to is THE most relatable (and joyous!) moment in cinema, at least to me.
Renee's breakthrough role. Cuba won his Oscar for this. Bob Sugar is Jay Mohr, whose sister and my sister used to be roommates. Never met him. We always visited at different times. The Copy Guy is Jerry Cantrell of Alice in Chains. Writer/Director Cameron Crowe also wrote Fast Times at Ridgemont High, and wrote and directed Say Anything, Singles, and Almost Famous. The fiance is the late Kelly Preston. The Arizona coach is Glenn Frey (RIP), a former Eagle, tge band, not the football team. Beau Bridges (Jeff's brother) playing Jerry O'Connell's dad. Jerry was Verne, the fat friend in Stand By Me. Bonnie Hunt (the sister) is a great comic actress. She's great in everything. Yes, that's the kid from Stuart Little. It's not a Tom Cruise film without a running scene. The Philadelphia Story (1940) is one the best early rom/coms. It reignited Katherine Hepburn's career. There are a few very dated moments, but it's definitely worth to see three legends spar: Hepburn, Jimmy Stewart, and Cary Grant.
I love that it doesn't follow the usual romcom formula. Jerry and Dorothy hook up pretty quickly and even get married, but that doesn't provide the usual closure. Not until he realises he loves her too and races home to tell her. Also, the fact that Jerry has an epiphany at the very beginning about himself, then instantly regrets being a good person and reverts to his bad self again for most of the rest of the film. It runs counter to how most films are structured and it still works.
If I can make a recommendation, if you two haven't watched it, but I'd say watch Up in the Air. It surprisingly makes a good combo watch with Jerry Maguire. Both main characters going through similar arcs.
Cameron Crowe does such a wonderful job of making us feel such emotions for these characters while relating to them at the same time. Another gem that he directed was Almost Famous, which is loosely based on his own life as a music journalist in the 1970’s. You guys would love that movie. Very much in the same style as this film.
Amen. Was coming to the comments to recommend the same thing. I adore Almost Famous. Which is autobiographical, to an extent. Crowe was hired by Rolling Stone as a teenager.
90s Tom Cruise was such a different actor and much more willing to take risks with his image and the kinds of movies he did. I miss that guy. Bonnie Hunt is definitely my MVP in this. She plays a similar sister role in Only You (great 90s rom-com with Marisa Tomei and Robert Downey, Jr.) -- if it's not already on your radar, it should be.
I think one of Cruise's best performances that doesn't get nearly enough credit is the first Mission Impossible movie. That's the one MI movie that was very heavily character-driven and relied on acting more than action and stunts. Cruise's acting in MI1 is in his top 5 performances, imo.
Remember the Titans is one hell of a football movie if you two aren't already familiar with it. It goes deeper than football but football is a great part of it. Cuba Gooding Jr being in this just reminded me of the movie Radio (football related). By far his greatest acting performance.
My wife was a huge Tom Cruise hater for many years bc she saw him as his cocky, a-hole characters in movies like Top Gun, Rain Man, Cocktail, Color of Money, etc. In the theater, during credits for this movie, she turned to me and said: “Okay, I finally get it. Now I see why everyone likes him.” Tom Cruise is a really good actor and this is one of his best by far. An Oscar-worthy performance even though he lost out to Geoffrey Rush for Shine. Great reaction guys. “Do you want my jacket? ‘Cause I’m cloaked in failure!” So good.
LOL Most of Cruise's famous 80s roles definitely had an eerily similar vibe about them, the cocky and arrogant "maverick" with an older mentor-father figure to set him on the right path. Ironically, all of those 80s roles that you mentioned are sandwiched between 2 very non-cocky Cruise roles in Risky Business (1983) and Born on the 4th of July (1989) where he played more vulnerable characters with actual humanity and depth. Born on the 4th of July is the role that really made Hollywood take Cruise seriously as an actor, resulting in him getting 3 Oscar nominations within the span of a decade. I personally think he should have won for Jerry Maguire and also his 2nd Oscar should have been for Collateral in 2004, a film he wasn't even nominated for. Two big oversights by the Academy, imo.
Tom Cruise's best acting performance is in Born On The Fourth Of July - and that's saying something seeing as he's never given a bad performance. But BOTFOJ should have won him an Oscar.
Agreed! Jerry Maguire is great, but The Replacements is such a fun football movie. Excellent cast, Madden and Summerall in the booth, just outstanding from start to finish
Thank you! lol I've been so disappointed seeing so many thumbnail reactions to The Longest Yard and it's the freakin remake and not of the original 70s classic.
First off let me just say I’m really happy this got to be viewed on the channel. I am. It has been a fave since it came out. Having said that, lol… I am honestly so surprised it won the sports poll. And not by a bit, not by a couple of points, it was way ahead. When you make a poll for a genre, obviously it brings out people interested in that genre. And I would have to say that Jerry Maguire is (without hyperbole) got to be at the bottom of that amazing list of ‘actual’ sports flicks. That is amazing(ly weird, lol). I mean, The Replacements isn’t even on that list. On a side note… when this movie came out I read a lot of essays in movie magazines and articles in newspapers basically talking about how people in the industry were just looking at each other and asking “how has no one thought of this before?!” Like, to analyze it, you have the perfect product to fill theatre seats for all the date crowds and couples; enough sports in it to keep the guys interested, and enough romance to keep the gals occupied…ish. Yeah, this movie was huge when it came out. I mean… even the Joker quoted it when he talked to Batman…! 😂😂😂
Another great film from Tom's early career is "All The Right Moves", which he plays a high school student who plays football in a lower middle class city near the steel mills of PA. I think it's one of his best, at least early in his career.
One of Cruise's finest hours and Crowe's best films. Renee's excellent too & all hail Bonnie Hunt (love her!) The agent giving advice thru out was originally to be the legendary Billy Wilder, who Crowe admired and patterned his film after Wilder's THE APARTMENT (another must see).
The "copy guy" at the beginning is Jerry Cantrell, lead guitarist of the band ALICE IN CHAINS. And yes, the Are you Hootie line? Is a in reference to HOOTIE IN THE BLOWFISH. 🤣
It's hard not to love this movie. Even if you have never watched this movie you will recognize lines from this movie. One of the many good things about it is the presence of the always wonderful Bonny Hunt.
Cameron Crowe wrote and directed *Jerry Maguire* and *Almost Famous* , and won the OSCAR to best original script for the latter. 👍 He also wrote and directed VANILLA SKY (starring Tom Cruise), or rather translated the *Abre Los Ojos* script from Spanish to English. 😂
I ADORE Bonnie Hunt - and wanted to adopt little Jonathan Lipniki. He's such a precious little cherub. Would LOVE for you to also react to Adventures in Babysitting, The Secret of My Success, and License to Drive. Three hilarious, AMAZING 80's movies that I know you would enjoy. The Skulls is a darker suspense thriller with the awesome Josh Jackson and late great Paul Walker. Cheers and big love from Ontario, Canada - and a fellow Schmidt. Can't wait for your Cobra Kai reactions. INCREDIBLE next five episodes!!
One of my all time favourite films. Some great lines. 'Don't cry at the beginning of the date, cry at the end like I always do'. For best sports films, Moneyball, Any Given Sunday, The Replacements, Tin Cup, The Natural, Bull Durham.
I probably looked at Tom Cruise as a normal, well adjusted man the last time I watched this one. Cameron Crowe has proven he can find the right balance between humor and heart, and does again here delivering a solid romantic comedy.
Type in here, Cuba gooding jr, Oscar speech! Because of the director, and his affinity for great music in his movies....fast times at ridgemont high, say anything, vanilla sky, singles, High fidelity, almost famous, the copier guy? Jerry Cantrell of Alice in Chains!!! Even her brother here, is a main character in High Fidelity!
Enjoyed your reaction to this classic movie. If you're looking for more romance films, you both could consider The "Before" Trilogy - Before Sunrise (1995), Before Sunset (2004) and Before Midnight (2013), all directed by Richard Linklater (who also made Dazed and Confused) and starring Ethan Hawke & Julie Delpy.
This is what a ‘rom com’ used to be, yes, funny and romantic, but also clever, deeply felt - quality, why they were so successful back in the day. this movie is so smart, so true, and so well acted. This movie doesn’t live in expected tropes, we’re so used to the typical beats in movies these days, when you see a movie like this it throws people - which should be the opposite reaction, we need to embrace original writing and filmmaking - enjoy it!
The whole freak out scene where he’s quitting in the office is hilariously spoofed in Half Baked. A funny movie you guys should watch. And I’ll recommend again a movie with Kelly Preston is Mischief.
Cuba won a academy award for this and as much as I think it was deserved I think some people think it should have been Edward Norton for primal fear. Both deserved it in my opinion
Awesome reaction guys :) Oh and I think you may have missed his homage to one of his iconic hits - Risky Business - when he was wearing the sun glasses. You should check out Draft Day (2014) also Trouble with the Curve (2012) you'll love them both.
Those famous lines all originated from this movie, "You had me at hello", "You complete me", "Show me the money".

Cruise is one of the most consistent movie stars in history, he had Jerry Maguire and Mission Impossible in 1996.
We tend to take him for granted, but he's been box office gold for over 40 years. That's completely unheard of.
One example of why the 90s were the best era for movies, these types of films simply aren't made anymore.
Not even close.....you must be a millennial.

This film is a goldmine of quotable lines. I used to use Quon and Ya'know! all the time.
Agree! One I use a lot is, "jump into my nightmare where the water is warm". My favorite is Kelly Preston giving her "sensitivity" speech. So great!
Love this movie👍. Thanks for another GREAT reaction ❤️.
The little actor playing Ray is probably what John Denver looked like as a young man.
*VANILLA SKY* (2001)
Also Tom Cruise and director Cameron Crowe must see
One of the worst movies ever made?
Please add Men of Honor (2000) to your list. Cuba Gooding Jr. and De Niro, true inspiring story.
Yes! Agree!
IMO this is the Godfather of rom/coms. Thank you guys for reacting to it. 😎🙏❤️
The general manager is Glenn Frey from the Eagles.
I saw him
21:00 Best joke, out of nowhere🤣🤣
The whole freak out scene where he’s quitting in the office is hilariously spoofed in Half Baked. A funny movie you guys should watch. And I’ll recommend again a movie with Kelly Preston is Mischief.
If you want another movie about football, may I suggest 1979’s “North Dallas Forty”
Great analysis! :))
11:08 "Is that Hootie from Hootie and the Blowfish?" -TBR
Is there another Hootie?
I sure hope not! One is much more than enough!
You guys should watch almost famous, great coming of age film, directed by Cameron Crowe as well
Cuba won a academy award for this and as much as I think it was deserved I think some people think it should have been Edward Norton for primal fear. Both deserved it in my opinion
Awesome reaction guys :)
Oh and I think you may have missed his homage to one of his iconic hits - Risky Business - when he was wearing the sun glasses.
You should check out Draft Day (2014) also Trouble with the Curve (2012) you'll love them both.
This is a football movie, like Die Hard is a Christmas movie. There’s so many good football movies. Any Given Sunday and Varsity Blues.
They made a mistake. They admit it. They didn't know. It was still a great reaction.
if you haven't yet please watch Almost Famous by the same director :)
Peak Cameron Crowe. Almost Famous next!!!
Forgot about Rudy too! Another amazing football movie!
