- I finally got to get the Hellcat out to play after more than 3 weeks of it just sitting and something unexpected happened. This could have been really bad.

The last thermostat I put in my Dart years ago was a decent lifetime one that is supposed to fail in the open position if it ever does. I used to run a 160 in the summer and 190 in the winter. I found out by just driving the car and researching that I was better off to run a 180 so the engine gets thourghly warmed up all the way with no cold and hot spots. I was surprised they wanted a 190 in a 69 engine but that's what it called for. I also added a old Taurus electric fan and adjustable thermostatic fan switch for when it's hot out and it gets warm sitting in traffic with the regular fan, when it kicks in it pulls it right back to normal quickly but car and engine has a lot of miles and is retired for now. It was built in LA and delivered Feb2 of 69 and is a Western Sport Special. My driver now is a 06 Charger Hemi RT with 90k I got cheap, very fun.

Glad it was only a thermostat, you kinda knew it was giving a slight problem with the temps, but when goes way up there, it does give you that sick feeling, nice job on
changing it out. A happy car is a happy owner.

Happened to me before too. Milodon t-stat has been the best one to use. Also if that happens again, roll the windows down and put the heat on full blast so that you can make it home.
That last little bit of info I was wondering the whole video if it needed a tune for it lol thanks for that.

I might of mentioned this in one of your other videos. If you plan on jacking up your Mustang to work on it, get a set of BMR jacking rails. They make the maintenance a lot easier. And if you do, the longer rail goes on the driver's side during installation.

It's true. Vehicles don't like to sit. They are meant to be driven! Stagnant fluids = bad. If a vehicle sits for too long, you'll be singing the blues about a "Dead Battery" song. I'm glad it was just a thermostat and not an expensive lifted head issue. With that, the look you get on your face when the G forces push you back in the seat, Priceless. :)

Bro, the moment it overheated, I had a feeling it was the thermostat. I had a similar experience with a different ride many years ago, only the car was stock and I didn't have to worry about tunes or programming. Just took out the old bad one, put in the new one. Good to go.

Hopefully running that cool it won't kick the check engine. Glad you got that beast fixed.
It will trip a P0128 DTC, but you just uncheck that code in the tune and it won't trip the CEL.
That's the one I have it runs perfect. Also it keeps the temperature in the summer heat arround 185. In the spring time when its cool its arround 170. Really great product.

Damn that car is crazy violent and don't know how anyone could replace that, it would never be the same after owning it lol. Well I'm really glad that it was just the T-stat and a little maintenance, that's why I had my Challenger flushed after purchasing it because it was pre-owned and don't know if anyone had it done before. I also junked that hot stock stock one, and got a 180 from speedlogix that works great
I had the same situation, besides the stat I replaced coolant sensor as well...just to be safe, why not right...

Hi, I just found your channel and have a question for you or your subs. I want to buy a challenger . Either a RT with tons of options or a scat pack with hardly any options. Which do you think would be better in the long run to hold its value? I dont do much driving so mileage would be minimal. Trying to make a decision based off a bunch of peoples opinions. Ive tried an RT 50th anniversary edition loaded and know the power but is the scat pack that much faster?

Racer x you indicated that putting in a lower temperature thermostat without tuning the car would risk burning up your cooling fans, I am not sure I understand why that would be the case. It seems if the car is running cooler the fans wouldn't actually run as often.
I'm surprised your stable coolant temp after the new stat wasn't lower than 185 - like 175? I run the Mishimoto 180 stat and am always at 185 once engine is up to temp...

Man something always happens when you don’t get to drive your car for a while and you get on it and it’s not the same. I had the 47th 392 challenger and had to sell it before anything else started to go wrong on the car

Your car might have a faulty Thermostat. Happened to my scat pack when I did the 180° Thermostat swap, happened in 3-4 weeks the thermostat went bad.
Seen a video with the exact same problem on a scat pack. I wonder if the vehicles just simply run to hot for how those lower temp stats are made. I was considering changing mine out but I don't know....
Is this a direct result of yet another inherent design defect, or a fluke only effecting RUclipsrs?
RacerX I assume the stock stat keeps the coolant temp around 200F. What are the benefits of the 175F/185F stat?
Performance t stats in high HP applications do have a hx of taking a crap, particularly in Mopars.

My SRT went the other way. Mine was stuck open and was throwing out engine management and transmission management codes. New 203 t stat. Simple fix.

Probably, it usually occurs a 1/100 second prior to death, traveling 180 mph when striking a solid object.

Hey man, I wanted some insight if this problem has ever happened to you or if you had heard ever about it. I tried to look online but I can't find any concrete information... I recently got a brand new 2020 challenger v6 off the lot 6 months ago and it's currently at 6k miles . Yesterday as I was about go home from work, my car "stalled" in the parking lot and the check engine light came on. I couldn't move for a few seconds but finally I pulled over and parked. Called my mechanic friend and he was on the way while I tried to reverse and it wouldn't let me... My car could not reverse and on the screen it would say "Change into P for parking, then change into designed gear." I did that and then selected reverse but still no luck. It's at the dealership at the moment and it's been a whole day but still no update. I'm sure my warranty will cover it but it's just so bizarre since it's a new car. Been trying to get rental all day from the dealership but no luck . The dealerships in Texas really do suck sometimes lol. Sorry for the long post but if you have any insight it would be helpful!
cool video I have the same product but I have to do the timing belt and etc at the same time so I'm a put it in the shop don't have the special tool to do it myself

I would go with a 295 in the front.. doesn't really matter.. maybe a Michelin Pilot sport.. in the back go MT Street SS in 305.. they will serve you well (just not in rain lol)
5:31 where did you get the Carbon Fiber piece for the engine shroud, one with the Red Charger Lettering on it? love to get that for my daughter's new charger, she'd love it

Man I’m having the same problem with my 07 charger r/t just got the air out the system yesterday and now the fans run hard when I reach normal temp but when I mash the gas it jumps to the middle or it try’s to jump over a little until I drive normal the temp goes back behind the middle line is this normal anyone????

Sadly both are spotty on reliability.I bought a KIA Stinger because of that. Ford even got a bad batch of 5.0 engines and produced thousands that had issues and people had to fight them.Check out the forums before you buy either of these--and buy them if can own it--not lease or payments.I have had 3 Fords and all wound up in the shop for semi major repairs that were no fault other then bad engineering.
