Sold my Hellcat last month. I'm 51 and I couldn't show restraint driving it. Was addicted to the power and speed. Drove like a mad man. I consider myself a seasoned driver with hotrod's, but I had a date with death. I felt my time was close. She'll be a great memory.
Yeah I wished I had done that,but with my BUSA I was a pro driver with 30yrs experience ,and ended up crippled on the street.. but I’ve since gone through a 800hp trans am, 800 hp ZL1 500hp F-150 and about to possible pull the trigger of a 800hp redeye..although I’ve not totally made my mine up..
Yeah I outrun people all the time in junk, just because I can drive. Most people I see are even scared of what they buy nowadays and they should be if they don't know what they're doing. But they need to also quit flexing like they do know what they're doing
I agree but I will say, at least where I live (NY) or within 75 miles of it (NY), this state spends millions of dollars on walking paths. Biking paths, hiking/cliff face climbing (High liabilities as well correct?), and slow and slower lanes but think that any type of motor sports are reckless, brings in violent crowds, too much liability 😆😂, too much pollution (may we begin on the electric car battery start to finish (disposal issues?), and too much traffic on roads. Well, there is a lot of backed up traffic and accidents on roads that are long and winding and have little to no should and a mountain biker going up or down in lane riding extremely slow or when hikers park illegally and state police do nothing about it although no parking signs all over the road and the road is so narrow add 18 wheelers to the list and people are going head on (happens quite often I may add. Almost every summer weekend). Or the additional amount of litter along and throughout these areas (but we have signs!) Ok we will put up signs as well. And the amount of serious injuries as well as minor (bad road rash, broken arm), and finally, only because very long already, and congregation of many people blocking store fronts, diners, and pizza places, throughout the check points of the trails. So you get it? It's racism in a different manner. Because of what we do does not interest many political staff and many people in general (that the news pushes to broadcast) this state is not willing to entertain it at all nor tolerate its frustrated drivers wishing they could have a local track here and there, we go to the streets (need to learn to drive at night lol) and yes, some of do become violent (frustrated and stressed better word). Let's think of it, aren't all of us as well at this point?

Just bought my Dodge Charger scat pack almost 2 weeks ago. Love the car, but still getting used to it. I’m 21 years old and this video put a lot in perspective for me. I handle the car very well but the talks about driving fast on the highway stood out the most. It seems all fun and games until things go bad. Thanks for the video. It was very helpful.
I wrecked in a drag race 30 years ago when I was 21. Broke my neck, fractured skull, permanent nerve damage to my left arm and shoulder, broken ankle and 17 fractures in my left leg. I was paralyzed from the neck down. They give me less than one half percent of even surviving. With hard work in rehab. I was one in the millions that become paralyzed and regain all motor functions. Lucky is not a word for my recovery. It was a miracle. I had 5 race cars at the time and was itching to get back to racing. After I was cleared from the doctor's to never race again. I headed back to the quarter mile. When I was coming up to maximum speed on my first run, I felt hesitant to keep pushing it. I figured it was just back to racing nerves. I took several runs and could not shake that feeling. I tried and tried for over a month everyday to get competitive again. I finally realized that I had lost my edge and could not be a good competitor. I sold all my drag cars and went back to work doing hvac service work. Now I am 51 and retiring this month. I have had my eye on the Scat Pack for about a year now. I still like to go fast, just not on the track. Just a quick question Jay, How is the Scat Pack for driving long distance ? I have alot of arthritis in my legs and want something that I don't have to stop every 50 miles to stretch. I had to buy a Cadillac just for this purpose. Is it comfortable on long drives ?

I went to a private driving school and my instructor always said when the car gets sideways, to look in the direction you want the car to travel because your hands turn the wheel the direction you’re looking. Let off the gas and look where you want it to go, not where you don’t want it to go. No gas no brakes and look where you want the car to go
@@BC-hc5dq well if you're spinning out of control you've already passed the point of no return. The OP's advice applies to what you should do to AVOID reaching the point of no return. If the car has already spun over 90° you're well on your way. 180°+... you're already there and just along for the ride. Unless you intentionally did this, and are in control (which the majority are not), yeah... you've hit that point. In the end, the object is to avoid letting it get there. These car have WICKED power. One must bare that in mind and RESPECT that fact at all times. Do that, and you'll likely be able to benefit from the aforementioned advice. Don't... well... hope there's no traffic, pedestrians, guard rails, cement barriers, buildings, bridges, or ditches nearby. Any of those and you may have a life changing, or ending moment.
I had a 67 karman Ghia with nice dual carbs 1835cc not a hell cat but it had a surprise for me 1rst race against a new gen gto.my Ghia does wheely off the line ! I forgot to put the sand bags back .

I've daily driven my 392 for about a year now, and to be honest, even to this day, the power of it can really take you by surprise. I've owned several sports cars, but this one has the kind of torque that can make a trip around the damn block quite dangerous, if you're not careful with accelerating and turning.
Not just your 392, my 5.7 rt can find a slick spot under hard acceleration and get slidey really quick! Thankfully no misshaps for me yet, but I definitely respect the hemi. The scat or hc could be too much very quickly if my lil 5.7 can get out of sorts on dry pavement.

Excellent video. I had a WRX also for awhile and loved the freedom of handling knowing it would respond immediately being an AWD car. I’ve had my Scat for 6 months now and oh man, The difference in torque is massive. I’ve practiced in long parking lots with exactly this scenario and you can’t understand how powerful these things are until you get out of sorts and have to compensate. It’s not easy. It’s stressful. But once you can control it it feels like you have “leveled up” I can’t tell you how many dudes have tried to roll race at 3 pm on the DNT, too. No. I pick my spots to unleash it responsibly. I didn’t get this car to go 150 all the time, I got it bc it’s an amazing muscle car that is exceptionally fun to drive and can be tinkered with in so many ways to improve that experience. Anybody who just wants these to race should stick to the track.
Smart man I do that too tbh. I don’t like racing especially a spot I’ve never driven through, don’t know how the road is or how your car will react in case of a bad road but once you know oh it’s on 😈🤣
So true.. My boss bought a brand new 1965 Shelby Cobra w/289, Black. One night while street racing in Fremont Ca. he hit a railroad crossing at 100+ mph ..the car flipped and was destroyed, breaking his back in the process.
@@richbenoit1840 A friend of mine Dick Smith use to race a 427 cobra in SCCA. he was national champion in the car. I was with him at some of his races. I owned a Shelby 350 gt a 66. I belonged to the Shelby Cobra Club for many years. So I may know a little more than your average bear about them. I prefer the 289 version, they were and all around more balanced car.

So many fast cars on the roads now days... Even some trucks and basic suvs are getting quick (3.5 ecoboost) .. Then you have tesla bragging about 0-60 in 2-4 seconds and bragging about a quick semi.... Do we need so many people with cars like this??? Haha no. At least with gas cars the poor mpg in high hp cars would weed out many non car people.
Thats why i started with a v6 in my younger days. Perfect driving and boredom of a v6 and you just might be ready for true american muscle.......****might***
Great vid. C7 Corvette owner here. Huge learning curve...finally took a professional performance race class which showed me what my car was capable of ...was scary actually 😳. Money well spent. After all the learning and practice the car is still the boss.
As someone who owns a 2019 Chevy Camaro SS with a 6.2L V8, and has had it for a year, I don't have one dent on the car. BECAUSE I don't drive it like a bat out of hell!! These kind of cars have a hell of a lot of power and you need to respect that power. It doesn't matter whether your on a road, a highway, or even a racetrack!!! REMEMBER, it's not just the car you jeopardize, it's your insurance.......and more importantly, your own life!!! Happy motoring!!!
I own an 09 mustang gt and occasionally drive like an ass, but ive had it for over 3 years and have gotten used to how it drives when pushed. But it took me a while to reach that point. It took me a few months to get used to how the car felt when driven hard or how to react with me making power slides. But now I dont really do that stuff anymore, the worst I do is speed down the highway[like 80-90 mph)

I'd also attach an angry duck hood ornament!! Unfortunately, I can't do that with a Camaro because the hood design wouldn't look good with an ornament!! (The same hood ornament that was in the movie "Death Proof". In case you haven't seen the movie, it's what Kurt Russell had on his black Chevy Nova).

there are plenty of tracks where you can let it rip , the street is not the place my car hits 128 mph in 10 seconds , but i never let it rip on the street that's what tracks are for
Thanks for doing this particular video. I love my two Challengers and I love pushing them to there limits out on the track. However, as you and others pointed out, too many untrained drivers are getting into these cars and ruining them or, worse, getting people hurt. A well done, straight shooting PSA video like this is most welcome.

Kudos to Mopar also for having their driving school for anyone who buys a Hellcat platform vehicle. Back in 1984 I bought a new Chrysler Laser with a 2.2liter turbo and a 5speed that put out 166HP which made it one of the fastest production cars at the time. We’ve come a long way baby!
About responsibility: I've had my 2013 R/T 5.7 Challenger for about 4 years now. I'm 56. In my 20s I had a '79 6.6 Trans Am, and drove it like a 25 yr-old, lost my driving privileges in 4 states. I'm surprised I wasn't dead before 30. Yeah. Then it was all Hondas and Toyotas to my 50s, and now my R/T. When i first bought it i took it into an empty parking lot and purposely discovered where its breaking points were from a dead stop to getting on the pedal and making right and left turns, as if i were leaving intersection traffic lights. Helped A LOT to know where it broke traction. Over the first 6 months I would get the speedo up to 140mph pretty easy, but due to the factory Eagle RS-A at a 149 speed rating, that was as far as I dared. I also MADE A POINT of 140 ONLY on divided highways with NO other cars going in either direction, and no on-ramps (usually on Sunday mornings 6am, and, yes, once racing a Camaro SS and once racing a Porsche. They both lost, I don't worship Dale Earnhardt Sr for no reason). Literally traffic-free, with no side driveways, etc. The only things I want to worry about are tires, animals, and potholes. If I'm going to kill somebody, it needs to be only me, don't need to kill anyone else. Since then, though, I'm pretty much flow of traffic and only get on the pedal in rare occasions, or freeway on-ramps,. etc. Crazy thing is now I have the Michelin Pilot A/S3+ ZR tires, and I don't get the thing over 115 these days, and that's still only if I'm the only car on the highway. Sure, it's no Hellcat, only 375horse, but that's still enough to kill you before you know it. Get on it, for sure, but don't be a dick.
Not over 140? My 1967 Oldsmobile 442 only had 360 horsepower, but it weighed 3600 because it was barely optioned. The 3.73 gears made sure it didn't go over 115mph
Wow Im the same way! But Im 61 yrs old. Ive learned alot since 18 yrs old. Ive a series of quick muscle cars from that era. Self control is the name of the game! Like you said! Im surprised Im still here!
My 66 Charger ran up to 145 mph, and blew a lot of tires back in the 70's. Finally got smart and got some cop interceptors. Once the road was lonely, it was terrific. Tread life was not great though.
The go fast motorcycle guys learned how self control is early on. When I first got a bike it was a 15 year old beater middleweight...but the equivalent power to weight ratio in a 3500 lb car would have been 800 hp. It’s a different day in the canyons when there’s significantly less “rest” time between corners, and fatigue gets dangerous fast...
Four or five guys I knew in high school (early 70’s). We’re dead before 25. All these guys were into muscle and racing. Since I was a kid I wanted a Challenger. I bought a beautiful black R/T as a retirement present to myself in 2011. It’s got all the power I need. Sure would like to drive a hellcat some day though.
Just got a 2020 Scatpack after selling my 13' GT500 back in 2017. Love the feel and look of these beautiful beasts. Dodge did a great job. I had a 07' Evo MR, 05' E55 AMG and a 17' Ford Fusion Sport. But the horsepower, comfort and looks of the Scatpack is just what I need right now... Awesome. #Blessings

Ill be honest, when i first got my 2019 Scat Pack Charger, i was intimidated because i never driven anything this fast. I spent about a month just getting to know the car especially being that its RWD, heavy and a big car. When i had the chance to open it up with no one around i would floor it at different speeds to know what to expect, and how to react. I eventually was more comfortable to be in Track mode or Sport mode, dont always need to be obviously especially in traffic, just wasting gas for no reason and not enjoying it lol. This is what I did when I first bought my 09 mustang gt 3 years ago. Having came from. 4 cylinders(with a sports version of one coming in at 210), I took it easy with the mustang till I got used to it.

Learn what your car feels like in a safe environment, both when it feels good and when it feels bad. When you finally have that "Oh - - - -" moment, you'll know what to do.
Did that with my ninja my first real superbikes. Had yrs of riding bikes but not with that kind of power and handling. I went to deserted areas and slowly pushed it and it saved my life s few times. Even racers do not jump into f1 fast it takes yrs of driving cars in lower classes to build skills and feel for rea
Great advise my Man! a lot of young folks don't get it, especially if they haven't drove or own Muscle car before. I talked to a young guy the another day and he thought he could just get in a high powered car and just go smashing in it and never drove a Muscle car before.

Anytime the rear wheels are going faster than the car problems can happen to an inexperienced driver. Maybe you can invite them to the tracks and some of you guys can school them. DrDefenseman
That is why you have the teenage and valet mode. Never got to drive a Hellcat. That was a Roush certified test drivers job. But did drive the Mustang 5.0 and tested all the modes. With all the transmissions. Until I got caught. I guess Ford was sure I would break the Manual shift 6 speed? I have a cycle endorsement and a 750 Katana. That is about 4 Horses for every 10 pounds of motorcycle. Don't like the Rs motor is too pipey. AKA narrow HP and torque band with steep increase. Smooth is much better for driving For drag race HP is about all that matters as long the rear wheels do not pass the front wheels. I wore out 5 motorcycles. BTW a "88 Saleen does have problems keeping the rear wheels behind the front ones. Drove one of those. Also did drive a purple shaft 440 4 speed '66 Charger. Never wrecked either one. I don't like automatics in the new cars. The computer and I have a different idea of what gear is proper for what I am doing.
i drive a v6 charger and even though it doesn’t make a whole lot of power in the rain it did get lose im 17 but i knew what to do i let off the gas and let it come back. and i am also very responsible with my car and respect the car and its power at all times
@@warrengreen3217 the V6 is the only way to get all wheel drive, the insurance is way less, gas mileage is way more, and the reliability is better. Mine works great in the snow! I love the Challenger GT AWD. Plus, the modern V6 in the challenger GT has 305HP which is more horsepower than the V8 muscle cars of the 80s made.
It doesn't help.thst Chrysler is notorious for the $7,000 rebates to pay off the outstanding loan on your 18 year old Cadillac and get you into an actual NEW car.
Really appreciate your comments regarding responsible driving. I’ve always driven very capable cars for the time - but as good as you may be - when other vehicles are on the road, talent may not be enough to avoid a tragedy. Great video
From personal experience, when you begin to feel the car kick out, DO NOT panic and let off the throttle so quickly! This will cause your car to correct itself be snapping into a straight line and eventually turning you car in the opposite direction from inertia. I recommend powering through and using counter steering until the car is straight. It takes practice but it's easy with these cars due to the long wheel base. Make sure your tires have plenty of tread on them. If you are at the minimum tread level, you're already in trouble. Another thing is that people are neglecting the suspension upgrades! The suspension is the weak point on these vehicles.
This is why I'm glad I grew up driving nothing but rear-wheel drive cars no matter what the weather. Sun, rain, snow, sleet, ...didn't matter, ....you had to figure it out. I think it helped make me a much better driver when I started getting into some "real" horsepower.
Back in the day when front wheel drive cars were practically nonexistent, the way we learned how to deal with loss of traction was to wait until it snows a few inches, then take a car to a large, unplowed parking lot. Learn what it feels like and how to counteract it. I had an old school Charger ('73) with a seriously built '71 340 block, and a built 727 behind it. It was intended to be a highway car so the diff gear was 2.73. Even so, it took very little effort to light up the stock tires with their relatively small footprint. A pair of 295 50s on the back solved that nicely.
You kind of hit on something here. I am 53 and I grew up with rear wheel drive cars. All of the things in this (lengthy) video made total sense to me. For a generation of people who learned how to drive in FWD and AWD cars with pokey engines have no reference to a high torque RWD car. There is a reason why you see these cars in the 1/4 mile races. They are straight line cars period. While I am a real freedom guy, I do see the point made in this thread of maybe applying a special license (can't believe I just typed that). I will shut up now.
Naw surprisingly challengers handles pretty good in rain,I can make a turn on a onramp at like 60mph while wet and feels stable.meanwhile my fwd honda is hydroplaning all over the place going up a bridge
Yeah but nowadays its way worse because the high hp stuff of today is basically twice as powerful and twice as fast. Factor in way, way more traffic, in cars driven by dangerously distracted drivers and its a wonder the crash rate with these isnt 100 percent
LOL,,,I drove cars back then,,,,the tire and brake technology was very poor yet we drove at speeds far beyond the vehicles capabilities. We drove constantly simplify for the joy of driving. People today just plain don’t know how to drive.
Nobody takes driving classes, they don't do Track-Days, they don't even find a lonely road and burn-off a set of tires.. I had a 'CUDA when I was a kid.. I built the engine and trans and drove it HARD.. I found a road out in the middle of nowhere.. My friend and I learned how to do doughnuts, power-slides, and "ROCKFORDS."
Something I'd like to point out on this is if you are going to do a burnout, lock it in low. An unexpected shift and sudden increase in wheel speed can do all sorts of weird stuff
Absolutely great video, my man. Great info even just to bring awareness to how much skill these cars really require. As a 19 y/o who purposefully got a 5.7 Daytona in part to learn some skill before getting into a scat, or something more powerful, this really made me see that I truly made the right decision in getting into power over time. I’am glad you are teaching self manners for drivers with any muscle car with 400hp up to 800hp from factory. I was young once full with testosterone haha! With 150hp and lost my driving license, no transportation to go to work, that when I started going to the race track smartest thing I did and still racing at the track today. 😎👌👏👍
I totally agree with you the track is the safest place to fully push your car to the limit and beyond rather than endangering yourself or others in the street. I myself am 21 about to be 22 on this 18th and on my 200hp+ el camino I want to floor it whenever I have the chance.
Very well stated. People buy these cars not knowing what these cars are all about. I just purchased a Scat Pack Widebody T/A with a 6-speed Tremec and never driving a Challenger, it is Powerful, but it is heavy. I was in a turn lane and made the turn at an intersection and decided to show-off a little, because the sound this thing makes when it accelerates is Awesome. The car already felt heavy when I test drove it, but maybe solid is a better term. It is built very well and when you close the doors it sounds solid. But when making that turn in the turn lane at about 30-40mph, you can really feel that weight. The car does not want to readily turn which is where learning to drift a car around a turn and let the back wheels break free is important. Now I'm 54 years old and I know better. There was no danger and I was not going fast enough to depart the roadway, plus this is my first manual transmission car ever. I have driven stick twice and I own a 2007 Ducati 1098, so I know enough to figure it out, but these cars are indeed Muscle Cars intended for straight line performance. Yes they can be driven aggressively but you need to have the knowledge and experience to do so. And being on a closed course doesn't hurt either.

Safety features seem to give us a false sense of security. Crashing isn't bad, I have airbags. Slick roads are nothing, I have traction control. 'I can text and drive with lane keep assist and accident avoidance sensors' mentality.

First night I had my scat pack it was raining. Going down the interstate, touched the throttle and she tried to walk out on me. First thing I did was order new wheels and tires. Went to 305s on the rear. Much better
I stuck with the stock size on the front. 245/45 r20s on a 9x20 inch rim. On the back I'm running 305/35 r20s on a 10.5x20 inch rim. All COOPER® ZEON RS3-G1's. I love how the car feels on the road now
Mine did too first week i got it. It was raining, traffic slowed down, i changed lanes , car downshifted because i was going forty and it drifted out on me. I'm just going to get 275's all the way around and see how that works before i change the rear rims. 2019 scat pack
When I was a teenager I could do a controlled fishtail on dry pavement for as long as I wanted. It takes a lot of practice but you can use oversteer to your advantage and do an extended burn. Anybody who grew up in a snow climate with RWD knows how to recover from oversteer.
As you said it's a combination of an unprepared inexperienced driver combined with a car that is not set up for that said driver. Personally if someone's never driven anything like this they need to take lessons in my opinion.

Thank you, great video. I’m almost 60 and I grew up with rear wheel drive muscle cars. Been a long time since I had a RWD car. I just bought a 2018 scat pack and it’s like re-learning to drive again. That awesome power of these cars must be respected. What a machine though!!! Having a blast but yes in the wrong and careless hands it will be a huge problem.

I was wondering when you were going to do a Video on this. It happened to Me. I have been driving FWD Cars for so long, when I went to buy my 17’ Challenger R/T Plus 5.7 I had the Salesman drive it for the test-drive. Needless to say we haggled until it was closing time @ the Stealership. I had traded in my 2015 MINI Cooper S with twin Turbos, and signed the contract. I was in a area I had to use my GPS to find; By then it was 10PM and Raining hard. The navigation system was brand new and wasn’t even set up yet & it took me like 2 hours to drive home in the dark and pouring down rain. I was really freaking out because I was lost and my car had like 5 miles on it.(They didn’t even have anyone there to do the “Initial wash& prep) They told me to come back in the morning (which was a Saturday) I got home okay 👍 & brought it back the next morning. Think they sold my MINI while I was haggling (I saw it when the service department finished washing it) It looked better than the day I bought it. Anyways I had to tell you that story to get to the point with another story. BTW I am a NCDOT certified Lab technician at an Asphalt Plant. I was leaving the local Pet Store to get my dogs some food. And it started to Rain lightly. (Which is worse) all of the oil rises to the surface and I decided to get on the Highway, had like a 45 degree ramp that I was driving down and pushed the sport mode button because it downshifts better (but I forgot that I had the traction control set off in sport mode.) When I had to merge a little Rice burner cut me off BTW; I only had less than a quarter of a tank of fuel; so the back end was already light. I cut the wheel to avoid the vehicle that cut me off and matted the accelerator;-(BIG MISTAKE) Immediately went into a spin across five lanes and thank God nobody touched me while the car was completely out of control spinning and by old habits I turned the wheel into the direction of the spin while trying to power it out of it and all it did was spin faster. I ended up backing into a concrete barrier. I messed up the rear bumper cover and tail lights. But it caught the left rear quarter panel right under the spoiler. Three months in the body shop (I was also going 35-40 mph) I got my car back. It happened before you had your incident. I caught so much crap from everyone I knew. All the jokes about “Can’t ya handle the HP? Hahaha. I was so lucky to walk away from it. And I still want the 6.4ltr. BTW I was a ASE certified technician for over 25 years; and now test Asphalt for a living; I SHOULD HAVE KNOWN BETTER. I NEVER HAD BEEN SO EMBARRASSED. THE ONLY THING THAT REALLY GOT HURT WAS MY PRIDE. It might have not happened if the fuel tank was FULL. Stay Safe You All out there! Listen to Racer X He is totally telling you the Truth!
I learned when I was 12 years old about how different fwd, red and AWD cars react differently and in glad I did. I had always drifted around corners and skid around in the rain, and the first time I took a fwd car in the dirt and tried to take a hard turn, it just kept going straight, so I learned not to come into corners too hard with a fwd. I be tried the same thing in the rain in a SUV with AWD and it didn't slide at all and I be learned 4wd/AWD goes where you want it to. Knowing all of that before even getting my license helped round my driving skills once I got out of high school, in 2004 before there were many affordable, high horsepower, factory built sports cars, and bought a built 500hp car. Every car I built after that, had to be faster and faster.

Funny story , when I bought my hellcat , the other salesman had just sold a kid , a Scatpack stick shift. The kid had never even drove a stick and could literally not even move it out of the parking lot. The salesman could care less. I felt bad for the kid , took him to an empty lot and tried to Teach him. Needless to say , I don't think the kid could have ever learned. He had to call someone to come drive it home for him. True story
you're so right the drivers of rear wheel drive sports cars owners not understanding or realize potential issues and how to handle them. my 6.2 camaro ss told me to back off on a hard acceleration when the back end kicked out and power dropped and traction control lights came on at 81 mph. That is when i found out Eagle F1 tires should not be used for aggressive driving under 45 degrees F. I was never told that. It was 36 degrees that day and the road surface was probably below freezing.
I started off with a ricer with about 200 HP, then I got a modded 96 SS impala that had about 340 without a supercharger kit(add 100 with it), then I got an older AMG with around 380 and crazy torque, then I got a Panamera 4S with about 400 HP stock include a chip and thats almost 500. Now I have that experience to handle a 500 HP plus car and everything it does. Dumbasses with a little money are jumping from a car thats got little to no power to trying to drive a car that pushes out power theyre not used to. What also helped me out was a 3 day class drivers course where they teach u all the track fundamentals and recovery techniques which has saved my asss PLENTY of times. Also, many times its not the HP that fucks these guys up, its the torque
We practice power slides from day 1 in Michigan Winters. The key is to follow through and not keep the wheel cranked into the slide once it straightens back out.
Honestly most of the time it's more fun driving a slow car fast , rather than a fast car slow. Just cruising around with 400+ horses is like a tease , unless I can get my monte carlo out to the back roads I have way more fun in my beater s10
I’m literally upgrading as I outgrow the power range. Started V6 not I got the 5.7 but I’m jumping to Hellcat next year. Definitely need some time behind making jumps in hp/tq
I'm from Motor City Detroit where the hellcats hit the street first, and I remember when they first came out you couldn't drive off from the dealership without taking a special driver test, now that they are selling like hotcakes the don't care about people safety they just worried the money they sellingto anyone. 🥴

Sold my Hellcat last month. I'm 51 and I couldn't show restraint driving it. Was addicted to the power and speed. Drove like a mad man. I consider myself a seasoned driver with hotrod's, but I had a date with death. I felt my time was close. She'll be a great memory.

I agree but I will say, at least where I live (NY) or within 75 miles of it (NY), this state spends millions of dollars on walking paths. Biking paths, hiking/cliff face climbing (High liabilities as well correct?), and slow and slower lanes but think that any type of motor sports are reckless, brings in violent crowds, too much liability 😆😂, too much pollution (may we begin on the electric car battery start to finish

Well, there is a lot of backed up traffic and accidents on roads that are long and winding and have little to no should and a mountain biker going up or down in lane riding extremely slow or when hikers park illegally and state police do nothing about it although no parking signs all over the road and the road is so narrow add 18 wheelers to the list and people are going head on (happens quite often I may add. Almost every summer weekend). Or the additional amount of litter along and throughout these areas (but we have signs!) Ok we will put up signs as well. And the amount of serious injuries as well as minor (bad road rash, broken arm), and finally, only because very long already, and congregation of many people blocking store fronts, diners, and pizza places, throughout the check points of the trails. So you get it? It's racism in a different manner. Because of what we do does not interest many political staff and many people in general (that the news pushes to broadcast) this state is not willing to entertain it at all nor tolerate its frustrated drivers wishing they could have a local track here and there, we go to the streets (need to learn to drive at night lol) and yes, some of do become violent (frustrated and stressed better word). Let's think of it, aren't all of us as well at this point?

Just bought my Dodge Charger scat pack almost 2 weeks ago. Love the car, but still getting used to it. I’m 21 years old and this video put a lot in perspective for me. I handle the car very well but the talks about driving fast on the highway stood out the most. It seems all fun and games until things go bad. Thanks for the video. It was very helpful.

I wrecked in a drag race 30 years ago when I was 21. Broke my neck, fractured skull, permanent nerve damage to my left arm and shoulder, broken ankle and 17 fractures in my left leg. I was paralyzed from the neck down. They give me less than one half percent of even surviving. With hard work in rehab. I was one in the millions that become paralyzed and regain all motor functions. Lucky is not a word for my recovery. It was a miracle. I had 5 race cars at the time and was itching to get back to racing. After I was cleared from the doctor's to never race again. I headed back to the quarter mile. When I was coming up to maximum speed on my first run, I felt hesitant to keep pushing it. I figured it was just back to racing nerves. I took several runs and could not shake that feeling. I tried and tried for over a month everyday to get competitive again. I finally realized that I had lost my edge and could not be a good competitor. I sold all my drag cars and went back to work doing hvac service work. Now I am 51 and retiring this month. I have had my eye on the Scat Pack for about a year now. I still like to go fast, just not on the track. Just a quick question Jay, How is the Scat Pack for driving long distance ? I have alot of arthritis in my legs and want something that I don't have to stop every 50 miles to stretch. I had to buy a Cadillac just for this purpose. Is it comfortable on long drives ?

I went to a private driving school and my instructor always said when the car gets sideways, to look in the direction you want the car to travel because your hands turn the wheel the direction you’re looking. Let off the gas and look where you want it to go, not where you don’t want it to go. No gas no brakes and look where you want the car to go

If the car has already spun over 90° you're well on your way. 180°+... you're already there and just along for the ride. Unless you intentionally did this, and are in control (which the majority are not), yeah... you've hit that point.
In the end, the object is to avoid letting it get there. These car have WICKED power. One must bare that in mind and RESPECT that fact at all times. Do that, and you'll likely be able to benefit from the aforementioned advice. Don't... well... hope there's no traffic, pedestrians, guard rails, cement barriers, buildings, bridges, or ditches nearby. Any of those and you may have a life changing, or ending moment.
Not just when you get out of shape, ALWAYS look out ahead where you want the car to go.

I've daily driven my 392 for about a year now, and to be honest, even to this day, the power of it can really take you by surprise. I've owned several sports cars, but this one has the kind of torque that can make a trip around the damn block quite dangerous, if you're not careful with accelerating and turning.
Not just your 392, my 5.7 rt can find a slick spot under hard acceleration and get slidey really quick! Thankfully no misshaps for me yet, but I definitely respect the hemi. The scat or hc could be too much very quickly if my lil 5.7 can get out of sorts on dry pavement.

Excellent video. I had a WRX also for awhile and loved the freedom of handling knowing it would respond immediately being an AWD car.
I’ve had my Scat for 6 months now and oh man, The difference in torque is massive. I’ve practiced in long parking lots with exactly this scenario and you can’t understand how powerful these things are until you get out of sorts and have to compensate. It’s not easy. It’s stressful. But once you can control it it feels like you have “leveled up” I can’t tell you how many dudes have tried to roll race at 3 pm on the DNT, too. No. I pick my spots to unleash it responsibly. I didn’t get this car to go 150 all the time, I got it bc it’s an amazing muscle car that is exceptionally fun to drive and can be tinkered with in so many ways to improve that experience. Anybody who just wants these to race should stick to the track.

So true.. My boss bought a brand new 1965 Shelby Cobra w/289, Black. One night while street racing in Fremont Ca. he hit a railroad crossing at 100+ mph ..the car flipped and was destroyed, breaking his back in the process.

I belonged to the Shelby Cobra Club for many years. So I may know a little more than your average bear about them. I prefer the 289 version, they were and all around more balanced car.

So many fast cars on the roads now days... Even some trucks and basic suvs are getting quick (3.5 ecoboost) .. Then you have tesla bragging about 0-60 in 2-4 seconds and bragging about a quick semi.... Do we need so many people with cars like this??? Haha no. At least with gas cars the poor mpg in high hp cars would weed out many non car people.

Great vid. C7 Corvette owner here. Huge learning curve...finally took a professional performance race class which showed me what my car was capable of ...was scary actually 😳. Money well spent. After all the learning and practice the car is still the boss.
As someone who owns a 2019 Chevy Camaro SS with a 6.2L V8, and has had it for a year, I don't have one dent on the car. BECAUSE I don't drive it like a bat out of hell!! These kind of cars have a hell of a lot of power and you need to respect that power. It doesn't matter whether your on a road, a highway, or even a racetrack!!! REMEMBER, it's not just the car you jeopardize, it's your insurance.......and more importantly, your own life!!! Happy motoring!!!

I own an 09 mustang gt and occasionally drive like an ass, but ive had it for over 3 years and have gotten used to how it drives when pushed. But it took me a while to reach that point. It took me a few months to get used to how the car felt when driven hard or how to react with me making power slides. But now I dont really do that stuff anymore, the worst I do is speed down the highway[like 80-90 mph)

I'd also attach an angry duck hood ornament!! Unfortunately, I can't do that with a Camaro because the hood design wouldn't look good with an ornament!!

Thanks for doing this particular video. I love my two Challengers and I love pushing them to there limits out on the track. However, as you and others pointed out, too many untrained drivers are getting into these cars and ruining them or, worse, getting people hurt. A well done, straight shooting PSA video like this is most welcome.

Kudos to Mopar also for having their driving school for anyone who buys a Hellcat platform vehicle. Back in 1984 I bought a new Chrysler Laser with a 2.2liter turbo and a 5speed that put out 166HP which made it one of the fastest production cars at the time. We’ve come a long way baby!
About responsibility: I've had my 2013 R/T 5.7 Challenger for about 4 years now. I'm 56. In my 20s I had a '79 6.6 Trans Am, and drove it like a 25 yr-old, lost my driving privileges in 4 states. I'm surprised I wasn't dead before 30. Yeah. Then it was all Hondas and Toyotas to my 50s, and now my R/T. When i first bought it i took it into an empty parking lot and purposely discovered where its breaking points were from a dead stop to getting on the pedal and making right and left turns, as if i were leaving intersection traffic lights. Helped A LOT to know where it broke traction. Over the first 6 months I would get the speedo up to 140mph pretty easy, but due to the factory Eagle RS-A at a 149 speed rating, that was as far as I dared. I also MADE A POINT of 140 ONLY on divided highways with NO other cars going in either direction, and no on-ramps (usually on Sunday mornings 6am, and, yes, once racing a Camaro SS and once racing a Porsche. They both lost, I don't worship Dale Earnhardt Sr for no reason). Literally traffic-free, with no side driveways, etc. The only things I want to worry about are tires, animals, and potholes. If I'm going to kill somebody, it needs to be only me, don't need to kill anyone else. Since then, though, I'm pretty much flow of traffic and only get on the pedal in rare occasions, or freeway on-ramps,. etc. Crazy thing is now I have the Michelin Pilot A/S3+ ZR tires, and I don't get the thing over 115 these days, and that's still only if I'm the only car on the highway. Sure, it's no Hellcat, only 375horse, but that's still enough to kill you before you know it. Get on it, for sure, but don't be a dick.
Not over 140? My 1967 Oldsmobile 442 only had 360 horsepower, but it weighed 3600 because it was barely optioned. The 3.73 gears made sure it didn't go over 115mph

My 66 Charger ran up to 145 mph, and blew a lot of tires back in the 70's. Finally got smart and got some cop interceptors. Once the road was lonely, it was terrific. Tread life was not great though.
The go fast motorcycle guys learned how self control is early on. When I first got a bike it was a 15 year old beater middleweight...but the equivalent power to weight ratio in a 3500 lb car would have been 800 hp.

Just got a 2020 Scatpack after selling my 13' GT500 back in 2017. Love the feel and look of these beautiful beasts. Dodge did a great job. I had a 07' Evo MR, 05' E55 AMG and a 17' Ford Fusion Sport. Ill be honest, when i first got my 2019 Scat Pack Charger, i was intimidated because i never driven anything this fast. I spent about a month just getting to know the car especially being that its RWD, heavy and a big car. When i had the chance to open it up with no one around i would floor it at different speeds to know what to expect, and how to react. I eventually was more comfortable to be in Track mode or Sport mode, dont always need to be obviously especially in traffic, just wasting gas for no reason and not enjoying it lol. This is what I did when I first bought my 09 mustang gt 3 years ago. Having came from. 4 cylinders(with a sports version of one coming in at 210), I took it easy with the mustang till I got used to it.

I have a cycle endorsement and a 750 Katana. That is about 4 Horses for every 10 pounds of motorcycle.
Don't like the Rs motor is too pipey. AKA narrow HP and torque band with steep increase. Smooth is much better for driving
For drag race HP is about all that matters as long the rear wheels do not pass the front wheels.
I wore out 5 motorcycles. BTW a "88 Saleen does have problems keeping the rear wheels behind the front ones. Drove one of those.
Also did drive a purple shaft 440 4 speed '66 Charger. Never wrecked either one.
I don't like automatics in the new cars. The computer and I have a different idea of what gear is proper for what I am doing.

i drive a v6 charger and even though it doesn’t make a whole lot of power in the rain it did get lose im 17 but i knew what to do i let off the gas and let it come back. and i am also very responsible with my car and respect the car and its power at all times

@@warrengreen3217 the V6 is the only way to get all wheel drive, the insurance is way less, gas mileage is way more, and the reliability is better. Mine works great in the snow! I love the Challenger GT AWD. Plus, the modern V6 in the challenger GT has 305HP which is more horsepower than the V8 muscle cars of the 80s made.

True Even if your at a stoplight And someone rear ends you how do you defend against that? Too many idiot drivers out there.
From personal experience, when you begin to feel the car kick out, DO NOT panic and let off the throttle so quickly! This will cause your car to correct itself be snapping into a straight line and eventually turning you car in the opposite direction from inertia. I recommend powering through and using counter steering until the car is straight. It takes practice but it's easy with these cars due to the long wheel base. Make sure your tires have plenty of tread on them. If you are at the minimum tread level, you're already in trouble. Another thing is that people are neglecting the suspension upgrades! The suspension is the weak point on these vehicles.
This is why I'm glad I grew up driving nothing but rear-wheel drive cars no matter what the weather. Sun, rain, snow, sleet, ...didn't matter, ....you had to figure it out. I think it helped make me a much better driver when I started getting into some "real" horsepower.

Back in the day when front wheel drive cars were practically nonexistent, the way we learned how to deal with loss of traction was to wait until it snows a few inches, then take a car to a large, unplowed parking lot. Learn what it feels like and how to counteract it.
I had an old school Charger ('73) with a seriously built '71 340 block, and a built 727 behind it. It was intended to be a highway car so the diff gear was 2.73. Even so, it took very little effort to light up the stock tires with their relatively small footprint. A pair of 295 50s on the back solved that nicely.
I imagine driving a challenger could be like driving my truck. Rear wheel drive. Easy to lose control in rain and snow.

You kind of hit on something here. I am 53 and I grew up with rear wheel drive cars. All of the things in this (lengthy) video made total sense to me. For a generation of people who learned how to drive in FWD and AWD cars with pokey engines have no reference to a high torque RWD car. There is a reason why you see these cars in the 1/4 mile races. They are straight line cars period. While I am a real freedom guy, I do see the point made in this thread of maybe applying a special license (can't believe I just typed that). I will shut up now.
Naw surprisingly challengers handles pretty good in rain,I can make a turn on a onramp at like 60mph while wet and feels stable.meanwhile my fwd honda is hydroplaning all over the place going up a bridge

I had a 'CUDA when I was a kid.. I built the engine and trans and drove it HARD.. I found a road out in the middle of nowhere.. My friend and I learned how to do doughnuts, power-slides, and "ROCKFORDS."
Something I'd like to point out on this is if you are going to do a burnout, lock it in low. An unexpected shift and sudden increase in wheel speed can do all sorts of weird stuff
Absolutely great video, my man. Great info even just to bring awareness to how much skill these cars really require. As a 19 y/o who purposefully got a 5.7 Daytona in part to learn some skill before getting into a scat, or something more powerful, this really made me see that I truly made the right decision in getting into power over time. I’am glad you are teaching self manners for drivers with any muscle car with 400hp up to 800hp from factory. I was young once full with testosterone haha! With 150hp and lost my driving license, no transportation to go to work, that when I started going to the race track smartest thing I did and still racing at the track today. 😎👌👏👍

I totally agree with you the track is the safest place to fully push your car to the limit and beyond rather than endangering yourself or others in the street. I myself am 21 about to be 22 on this 18th and on my 200hp+ el camino I want to floor it whenever I have the chance.

Very well stated. People buy these cars not knowing what these cars are all about. I just purchased a Scat Pack Widebody T/A with a 6-speed Tremec and never driving a Challenger, it is Powerful, but it is heavy. I was in a turn lane and made the turn at an intersection and decided to show-off a little, because the sound this thing makes when it accelerates is Awesome. The car already felt heavy when I test drove it, but maybe solid is a better term. It is built very well and when you close the doors it sounds solid. But when making that turn in the turn lane at about 30-40mph, you can really feel that weight. The car does not want to readily turn which is where learning to drift a car around a turn and let the back wheels break free is important. Now I'm 54 years old and I know better. There was no danger and I was not going fast enough to depart the roadway, plus this is my first manual transmission car ever. I have driven stick twice and I own a 2007 Ducati 1098, so I know enough to figure it out, but these cars are indeed Muscle Cars intended for straight line performance. Yes they can be driven aggressively but you need to have the knowledge and experience to do so. And being on a closed course doesn't hurt either.

Safety features seem to give us a false sense of security. Crashing isn't bad, I have airbags. Slick roads are nothing, I have traction control. 'I can text and drive with lane keep assist and accident avoidance sensors' mentality.

I actually put my Hellcat in Valet mode when the roads are wet. That takes away all that torque, you know what I mean you own a Hellcat also ! 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽

First night I had my scat pack it was raining. Going down the interstate, touched the throttle and she tried to walk out on me. First thing I did was order new wheels and tires. Went to 305s on the rear. Much better
What size tires and rims did you get?
I stuck with the stock size on the front. 245/45 r20s on a 9x20 inch rim. On the back I'm running 305/35 r20s on a 10.5x20 inch rim. All COOPER® ZEON RS3-G1's. I love how the car feels on the road now

Mine did too first week i got it. It was raining, traffic slowed down, i changed lanes , car downshifted because i was going forty and it drifted out on me. I'm just going to get 275's all the way around and see how that works before i change the rear rims. 2019 scat pack

When I was a teenager I could do a controlled fishtail on dry pavement for as long as I wanted. It takes a lot of practice but you can use oversteer to your advantage and do an extended burn.
Anybody who grew up in a snow climate with RWD knows how to recover from oversteer.
As you said it's a combination of an unprepared inexperienced driver combined with a car that is not set up for that said driver. Personally if someone's never driven anything like this they need to take lessons in my opinion.

I was wondering when you were going to do a Video on this. It happened to Me. I have been driving FWD Cars for so long, when I went to buy my 17’ Challenger R/T Plus 5.7 I had the Salesman drive it for the test-drive. Needless to say we haggled until it was closing time @ the Stealership. I had traded in my 2015 MINI Cooper S with twin Turbos, and signed the contract. I was in a area I had to use my GPS to find; By then it was 10PM and Raining hard. The navigation system was brand new and wasn’t even set up yet & it took me like 2 hours to drive home in the dark and pouring down rain. I was really freaking out because I was lost and my car had like 5 miles on it.(They didn’t even have anyone there to do the “Initial wash& prep) They told me to come back in the morning (which was a Saturday) I got home okay 👍 & brought it back the next morning. Think they sold my MINI while I was haggling (I saw it when the service department finished washing it) It looked better than the day I bought it. Anyways I had to tell you that story to get to the point with another story. BTW I am a NCDOT certified Lab technician at an Asphalt Plant. I was leaving the local Pet Store to get my dogs some food. And it started to Rain lightly. (Which is worse) all of the oil rises to the surface and I decided to get on the Highway, had like a 45 degree ramp that I was driving down and pushed the sport mode button because it downshifts better (but I forgot that I had the traction control set off in sport mode.) When I had to merge a little Rice burner cut me off BTW; I only had less than a quarter of a tank of fuel; so the back end was already light. I cut the wheel to avoid the vehicle that cut me off and matted the accelerator;-(BIG MISTAKE) Immediately went into a spin across five lanes and thank God nobody touched me while the car was completely out of control spinning and by old habits I turned the wheel into the direction of the spin while trying to power it out of it and all it did was spin faster. I ended up backing into a concrete barrier. I messed up the rear bumper cover and tail lights. But it caught the left rear quarter panel right under the spoiler. Three months in the body shop (I was also going 35-40 mph) I got my car back. It happened before you had your incident. I caught so much crap from everyone I knew. All the jokes about “Can’t ya handle the HP? Hahaha. I was so lucky to walk away from it. And I still want the 6.4ltr. BTW I was a ASE certified technician for over 25 years; and now test Asphalt for a living; I SHOULD HAVE KNOWN BETTER.

I learned when I was 12 years old about how different fwd, red and AWD cars react differently and in glad I did. I had always drifted around corners and skid around in the rain, and the first time I took a fwd car in the dirt and tried to take a hard turn, it just kept going straight, so I learned not to come into corners too hard with a fwd. I be tried the same thing in the rain in a SUV with AWD and it didn't slide at all and I be learned 4wd/AWD goes where you want it to.
Knowing all of that before even getting my license helped round my driving skills once I got out of high school, in 2004 before there were many affordable, high horsepower, factory built sports cars, and bought a built 500hp car. Every car I built after that, had to be faster and faster.

Funny story , when I bought my hellcat , the other salesman had just sold a kid , a Scatpack stick shift. The kid had never even drove a stick and could literally not even move it out of the parking lot. The salesman could care less. I felt bad for the kid , took him to an empty lot and tried to Teach him. Needless to say , I don't think the kid could have ever learned. He had to call someone to come drive it home for him. True story

you're so right the drivers of rear wheel drive sports cars owners not understanding or realize potential issues and how to handle them. my 6.2 camaro ss told me to back off on a hard acceleration when the back end kicked out and power dropped and traction control lights came on at 81 mph. That is when i found out Eagle F1 tires should not be used for aggressive driving under 45 degrees F. I was never told that. It was 36 degrees that day and the road surface was probably below freezing.
I started off with a ricer with about 200 HP, then I got a modded 96 SS impala that had about 340 without a supercharger kit(add 100 with it), then I got an older AMG with around 380 and crazy torque, then I got a Panamera 4S with about 400 HP stock include a chip and thats almost 500. Now I have that experience to handle a 500 HP plus car and everything it does. Dumbasses with a little money are jumping from a car thats got little to no power to trying to drive a car that pushes out power theyre not used to. What also helped me out was a 3 day class drivers course where they teach u all the track fundamentals and recovery techniques which has saved my asss PLENTY of times. Also, many times its not the HP that fucks these guys up, its the torque

We practice power slides from day 1 in Michigan Winters. The key is to follow through and not keep the wheel cranked into the slide once it straightens back out.
We used to practice full out of control maneuver mall parking lots when empty wet or snow
