You're absolutely correct about this being a show with small beginnings. It never ceases to amaze me how the writers took the loudest and most bombastic character from Breaking Bad, and gave him a show centered around much more quieter, introspective and nuanced character development.
BB was a show with a ticking clock. Cancer/impending death is about the scariest thing a human can ever experience. Even as Walt goes into remission, it never seemed like he was out of the woods entirely. BCS takes that away, this show could take as long as it wanted to.
This show is the rare case where every season is better than the last.

Thats one way to look at it. I feel like the show only gets good at season 3 or 4. Thats a lot of shit to watch before it gets good.

My only complaint so far is the end of season 5 when the hitmen go for Lalo, those guys were completely inept at their jobs... Gus would not have hired those clowns.

I think you and Gus are vastly underestimating the ingenuity and, I'll admit, some luck Lalo had.
I'd say if those assassins came in to kill him 100 different times, they'd kill him about 85-90 times. Plus they planned the attack at 3am where most fucking people are asleep. Lalo is just one of those super paranoid and cautious dudes.
The talking toilet where the guy's oblivious to how sexual it sounds is one of the funniest episodes.
In some ways, I love this show more than Breaking Bad. I call it the Schindler's List/Jurassic Park difference.
And that "I broke my boy monologue".....dang,so good.
Mike is most definitely my favorite character in both Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul. A lot of time I get annoyed when we go back to Jimmy's storyline because I'm so into what's going on with Mike.
The slower pace was never a problem for me since my favorite characters were jimmy and mike anyways. Im now on season 3 and the story just keeps getting better and more exciting as well as saddening.
The pacing is one of the things that make these series so great. Events unfold in a more real sense of time.

This show does a really good job of introducing characters for you to care about in a prequel setting. I enjoyed Chuck when he was around, and I enjoy Kim, Nacho, Lalo, and even Howard now. I hope none of them die besides maybe Lalo.

YES by far the breaking bad world is peak of what television should strive to be. Vince Gilligan and the writers of this universe have done so well to English out all the characters and provide interesting endings to subplots. Honestly this show would not be what it is if it isn’t for Bob Odenkirks portrayal of Jimmy/Saul Goodman. This character has made me a huge fan of his and nobody was a love note to the audience that loves Bobs comedy and tuff guy character.

I rebooted the show last week, I had only seen season #1 and #2. Bob Odenkirk is such an underrated actor. This show can be heart wrenching and he nails it every time. Great serie, glad you are reviewing it!

I never comment much but I had to after this great review you gave, I agree 100% with everything you said Breaking Bad is the greatest show of all time, Mike is freaking awesome and yes Better Call Saul did have a slow start but I think it’s because Breaking Bad has such a huge group of followers, the show creators didn’t want to rush things and they told Sauls story how they wanted to tell it because they knew the hardcore fans were going to stick with it and what a treat for us fans who stayed for the ride because I think season 6 of Better Call Saul is going to be the greatest season in the whole Breaking Bad universe!!!
Your right, you could watch this with no knowledge of Breaking bad and still totally get what's going on and that's the beauty of it.
This show can certainly feel like a slow burn at times especially the first season while you’re at the early stage & you’re constantly comparing it to BB but it does carry the show on its own. The dramatic tone is set towards season 2. I love season 4, and watching Mike’s character more often is a true experience!

Same but the parts that hooked me in from season 1 were the talking toilet scene and mikes backstory
3:30 It's sad when Jimmy finds out that despite stopping his con man "Slippin Jimmy" antics and trying to become a lawyer to make Chuck proud it was Chuck himself preventing him being one.
I’ve been hoping for awhile that you would review and rank Better Call Saul! Ah, this is so awesome. I was a Breaking Bad fanatic as well, but I actually prefer Better Call Saul and the reason for that is I like the characters better. With that said, I hated the Chuck storyline and I didn’t start loving the show until after his death. I just couldn’t get into that storyline. But now, season 5, was my favorite season of any series, ever. Look forward to more reviews.
I was super late to watching Breaking Bad so I only finished it late last year. I was honestly exhausted by the end (in a good way but still, that last season is intense) so Better Call Saul starting slowly was a breath of fresh air.
Glad your covering this Cody. I love BB but I think BCS is actually better. It's written phenomenally. The first 3 seasons are like a lawyer drama with Mike's orgin and beginnings in Albuquerque. Then from season 4 on the Breaking Bad infested this show like a plauge. It's amazing to see where the show started and where it is now. Brilliant. And it's all cause of one event really in the season 3 finale titled "Lantern". That's the moment that changes everything for the show and these characters. The Moral Compass of the show basically goes. Great video Cody. Look foward to the rest.✌
Better Call Saul was my most anticipated show back in 2015, and it was a good thing since I just finished watching Breaking Bad in the Spring and Fall of 2014, and damn, this very first season did not disappoint. Loved the reintroduction of Saul Goodman as Jimmy McGill, as well as Mike Ehrmantraut, my favorite character of BCS, and the introduction of new characters like Kim and his brother Chuck. The flashfowards taking place after Breaking Bad, where we see Saul working at cinnabons always give me goosebumps! Plus, the confrontation between Jimmy and Tuco had me filled up with anxiety and tension, and it was cool to see and explore more of Mike's past during the season. Season 1 sure ended with a bang and I repeat, IT DID NOT DISSAPOINT, without a doubt, my second favorite season of BETTER CALL SAUL! 10/10

I absolutely love Better Call Saul. I think it’s the best show on TV. From the very first episode I was hooked & Ive never seen Breaking Bad. I’m recording every episode of Season 6 so I won’t miss a thing. The ending of season 5 was fucking amazing & I can’t wait to see what happens next. Now after Better Call Saul’s final season ends I will watch Breaking Bad.

It was really hard to get into better call Saul I gave up then rewatch breaking bad for a second time and went back to better call Saul and I really liked it. I was unhappy to realize that BCS wasn’t Breaking bad but now I think it’s good

As a fan of Bob's for thirty+ years it was easy to like the first season, as a Breaking Bad fan season 3 really is were you find yourself in the same world.

Great review Cody. Better Call Saul Is excellent and Is currently my favorite show on T.V. The performances, character development, writing, directing and cinematography are some of the best I've seen. This show has potential to be even better then Breaking Bad which Is my favorite show of all time.

I honestly don't remember why it happend cause it's already quite a few years ago. But when i first watched BB i got to season 2 maybe 3 and i just stopped watching for some reason, i liked the show but it didn't hook me (i probably was watching some other show at the same time that hooked me more at that time). And then months or maybe even years later i gave it another go from the beginning and watched it completley and i loved it and the same happend with BCS. Now rewatching both shows i don't understand how it happend.
Somehow BB and BCS manage to elevate their early seasons (which are weaker than the later ones in my humble opinion) through their later seasons. Like if you only watch season one and two of BCS it's fine but not amazing but after seeing the later seasons, season one and two seem amazing. So interesting to watch the different relationships develop and seeing the reasons why Jimmy became Saul later. And BCS has some amazing new "non"-BB characters like Nacho, Kim and Lalo to name a few.
I love all that you said. I have come to really love season 1. I think season 2 is the weakest and all the other seasons are great. Season 1 just has so much fun stuff. My favorite quote is from episode 2 when one of the twins says he is the worst lawyer ever. He said he talked the twins down from a death sentence to six months probation and that he is the best lawyer ever lol
I never watched Breaking Bad. I do plan on doing so, of course. I finished the first season of Better Call Saul yesterday and I loved it. Basically, everything about it. So, that opening black-and-white scene with him working at the ice cream place in the mall: would only Breaking Bad fans understand what was going on? Because I didn't really understand any of that.

So my girlfriend has never watched breaking bad. And since the new season of better call Saul is around the corner, I had her start watching that show from the beginning with me as I rewatched it. It's so interesting to see her perspective on it because she has no connection to any of the Easter eggs. We're in the middle of season 5, and she didn't like who they cast as the DEA agents, saying they were too cocky, not realizing that it was a main character from breaking bad and I thought that was funny. But at the end of the day, since the very first episode of the very first season, she's been hooked with the show. It being 'slow' at first did not bother her at all, because she didn't come from the highs of season 5 of breaking bad. And she's not going to watch breaking bad until after the conclusion of season 6 of bcs, so I'm excited to see how she reacts with the Easter eggs in the opposite direction. What a time to be alive LOL.

I've been watching the franchise since the pilot of Breaking Bad (I was a Bryan Cranston fan from Malcolm in the Middle and without knowing the plot, he was enough to check it out). I think I may fall into the camp of liking Better Call Saul SLIGHTLY more than Breaking Bad. There's more character development and Mike is my favorite character portrayed on television. I also enjoy the set pieces a bit more. As far as pacing, it does start off slow but so did Breaking Bad. I thought the pacing of the first season of BB was the slowest of any season in this universe (it's still my second favorite season of BB, however). Slow pacing is fine as long as they're doing something interesting and I've never gotten bored with either show.

I just recently started to rewatch this with my girlfriend. I watched the first couple of seasons on AMC as they aired, but for some reason I fell off afterwards. Watching season one again though it’s great.
Part of me almost does like Better Call Saul slightly more at this point because I like Jimmy/Saul as a character and seeing more of Mike’s backstory.
Apparently they are going to incorporate Jesse and Walt from season 1 into season 6 of Better Call Saul, which is 15 years later in real life. 🤔
When Better Call Saul ends, we'll have probably the best duology of shows pretty much ever. You could start at BCS and eventually make it through Breaking bad, with new perspectives on the characters and their motivations.
I very much prefer Better Call Saul to Breaking Bad. To be honest, completing Breaking Bad was a bit of a chore for me, and Mike, Saul and Fring were 3 of the characters that made me stick with it, so I was so happy to know that there would be a show with these characters. Can't wait for the new season and your reviews.

I like Better Call Saul more than Breaking Bad. There wasn't a single character in BB that I didn't hate at one point or another. Walt was literally the least likeable lead in TV history 🤣. But the show was crazy and wanted to see what was next.
This is a great series, just gets better each season, can't wait to watch the new series, great characters as good as Breaking bad

I like Better Call Saul better than seasons 1-4 of Breaking Bad, but we’ll see how season 6 goes before I say the whole series is better. I do feel like Breaking Bad has a stronger opening, though, with a more focused narrative, whereas BCS spends the first season introducing a lot of plot threads that won’t pay off until later on, so it can feel a little all over the place without context from later seasons.
This is more of a review of the entire programme than season 1.
The first two seasons aren’t the best but when you get to season 3, it’s great. Bout as good as Breaking Bad

I'm sorry you feel that way. There's not as much murder (until season 6 that is) but there is all kinds of betrayal, schemes, moral dilemmas, character development, etc.
Those same components are what made the first 4 seasons of Game of Thrones so intriguing. Then, incidentally, once the action overtook story, the content paid a huge price.
Fortunately, BCS has not fallen victim to that fate and can still tell a compelling story while ramping up the action and delivering fatal consequences for bad choices.
But to each their own. This show is boring for you and that's fine.
I like bcs a lil better then bb just because saul is my favorite character out the universe so it only makes sense i like the show about him a lil more
I think the Chuck storyline is so interesting, it’s nature vs. nurture. Jimmy isn’t innocent in it all. And at some point he could’ve cut his losses with Chuck and moved on with his life. But he pokes the bear with the Mesa Verde situation. Chuck is definitely at fault, but Jimmy proves Chuck is right constantly. Personal responsibility is something that Jimmy really needs to learn.
Totally agree on Mike though, Five-O is definitely my favorite BCS episode, and probably in the top 5 of both series combined.
It's weird, because BCS is a pretty slow burn... until it isn't. I didn't care for the first two seasons that much. Didn't give it a try again until last year. Found I liked seasons 1 and 2 slightly better, but I powered through, and was hooked at season 4.
Breaking Bad started off sort of slow too, but seems to have ramped up at a steadier pace.
My ranking:
1. Season 3 Very sad with chuck’s death.
2. Season 4 Awesome. Mike’s best storyline.
3. Season 5 I’m kinda confused why people think this season is a masterpiece but I still think it is a great season.
4. Season 2 Great continuation of season 1 but has a couple boring bits.
5. Season 1 Very lighthearted and fun and serious when it needs to be.
Shows in the Breaking Bad universe are part of the rarity of shows that don't have a bad season.
I've only seen up to s4, so far. I love the show, but don't feel like I could handle a re-watch, simply because Chuck annoys the fuck out of me.
if you're going to watch BCS, you would be better served watching BB first

Totally agree with your season 1 review. Great season and even better on a rewatch but seasons 1 & 2 are the reason I can’t say BCS is a serious contender to being better than BB.
BB is the greatest show of all time IMO. It’s earlier seasons weren’t to the level of the latter ones but still superior to BCS early seasons. All that being said, I am so hyped for this final season. Complete confidence in Vince and Peter to stick the landing. There are so many great shows this year but nothing I’m more excited for than BCS.

i just don't get it. No hate to anyone who likes this show but for me i don't see it. My one word review Boring. Nothing really happens. Maybe it gets better but i don't know if i can get thro it. I love breaking bad tho. Seemed like BB was a bit slow at first but i never really found that show boring, this one i do

i remember trying to get through the first season. I would always fall asleep until i said fuck it, started over and once i got through it the show would get better by the episode
I have watched BCS but I've never watched Breaking Bad and I can honestly say BCS is a master piece!!!

I ended up liking this show more than Breaking Bad. In Breaking Bad, you start off liking Walt then gradually hating who he becomes, with Saul Goodman, he starts off unlikable, but eventually we sympathize with Jimmy and he becomes likable to the very gut wrenching end.
Season 1 sucked I’m on to season 2. It’s strange how it’s telling mikes story and sauls story. Rather see mikes

Breaking Bad is overrated. Could not get past season 2. Gave it my best shot after hearing and reading all the rave reviews. I was disappointed. But.... Better Call Saul is amazing. Maybe it's because I genuinely care about Jimmy McGill and want his to succeed
How can you judge a show you never made it past the second season? Seasons 4 and 5 are a freaking ride!
