    Love your content but I think you missed the point of the Gus scene a little bit. I didn’t necessarily get the sense that it was “well, I could have a normal life, but it’s back to business, I’m set on my revenge.” In the previous scene Don Eladio basically told him, “remember who’s boss.” In a word, “I own you.” So Gus goes to have a drink and essentially has a very human moment with someone he feels attraction to; moments like these for Gus are few and far between because he has to be so “on” all the time. But he knows that if he even dares to get close to someone like his previous partner, that person is just a potential casualty in the life Gus has built for himself. The “look” Gus has when the waiter leaves isn’t just a desire for revenge, but a mix of sorrow for the loss of humanity that he has had to give up for the business he is in. I believe it is supposed to paint Gus in a sympathetic light to the audience, despite all of the despicable things he has done. He is as much trapped in the life as everyone else. That was my takeaway from it, anyways.

      I absolutely loved that whole scene. It’s really interesting how they’ve humanized Gus in this season. We’ve seen him fear for his life to the point of feeling unrest, and here we see him actually enjoy the company of a man he’s clearly attracted to, only to fall back into himself and leave. Scenes like that are a big part of this show’s success for me.

    Dude, it’s amazing to me how much restraint these creators have, I mean to be able to slow the pace down and make us sit with these characters as they deal with the aftermath of their decisions and actions and how they’re gonna move forward and live with it.. Gould and the crew r just cut from a different cloth, to have the patience and confidence to make an episode like this with only a few episodes left is nothing short of brilliant in my opinion.. I thought this episode was great and even more so, absolutely necessary, to end this story in a satisfying way

  • @Peer165

    The wine scene was basically Gus closing the lid on his own definition of what a normal life is forever. It was a small glimpse into this mans psychology and reminder to us viewers what could of been had this "monster" allowed himself on a different path. Really, Gus having this social moment, without any underlying mischievous motives, was in a way the closest we've ever came to know him. Another tragic figure in a brilliant, brilliant show. Wonderfuly written, executed and acted.

    Tom Schnauz did Bad Choice Road, Plan n Execution, Winner, Pimento.

      Peter Gould is the main writer of this show . How does it work? The main plot of the entire season is written in advance by Peter Gould, all the highlights and twists. The main plot . The idea for each episode was created in advance by Peter Gould . The same can be said about Vince Gilligan in Breаking bad . When other writers get an episode they need to write, they add a bunch of details and give life to an idea that has already been created. This absolutely doesnt take away their merits, because in fact they really write the episode completely and then give Peter Gould to check whether they conveyed what he wanted to say.

    Great video Cody. Was not expecting it to go this way. Things are moving really fast. Or is it just me??? I know there's only 4 episodes left but this going down like this basically garrentees a Kim an Gene reunion in the post BB episode, whenever that is. Unless something changes. One thing I do appreciate is how the show evolved when the two moral compasses in Jimmy's life went away. When Chuck died the BB universe was slowly infecting the show episode to episode. And now with Kim leaving we are fully in that timeline/world. He has nobody in his life and he is now that crummy crooked criminal lawyer we all love. And seeing him in his big lonely mansion just reassures that. This show and BB do that really well, they occasionally remind you this world is depressing and filled with loss, and we're watching it unfold. But as for the rest of the show, i don't know what to expect.

    Loved this episode. My favorite of the season so far. They handled the Kim/Jimmy fallout perfectly and I was genuinely surprised that they decided to jump so far forward in one cut. I was also *very* happy and relieved that there was some kind of actual pay off for Nacho‘s death in this episode, in the scene between Mike and Nacho’s dad. It was a great character moment that gave Nacho’s death more a long-standing impact for Mike as a character, which I appreciated. I feel it only further enriches his relationship with Jesse in BB as well. This episode is just full of great character moments and insights. Jimmy actually having a sincere moment of regret and admitting to jealousy of Howard at the service was very surprising and welcome for me, and Kim very subtly shifting blame to Howard’s widow, knowing their marriage was falling apart, and basically planting a seed of guilt in the woman’s head for not noticing any “drug problem” Howard may have had was just so twisted. I feel that was absolutely when she decided she needed to get away from Jimmy. Her natural inclination to defend him made her cross yet another line of depravity. Great episode. 10/10. Can’t wait for next week.

    • @jordanl1911
      @jordanl1911 2 года назад

      I dont think that moment was sincere(maybe only partially) He was just playing the Chuck card, more or less. He really hated Howard because Howard was able to come to terms with Chuck's death and get better while Jimmy was never really able to process it or deal with his feelings of guilt(which he also projected on to Howard)

    • @BareBandSubscription
      @BareBandSubscription 2 года назад

      Oh, I know all that about what it is that fueled Jimmy’s bogus resentment of Howard, but I found _any_ acknowledgment of his envy towards Howard at all to be surprising because he did, in truth, envy Howard, even if the exact cause of that envy is much more complex than he lets on. Though upon reflection, I think you’re partly right as well. I think it was him showing _just enough_ of himself to play a sympathy card. It’s worth noting that Kim is looking at Jimmy as he says this, possibly seeing it as either genuine or a “play”, likely motivating her to further manipulate the situation in their favor, playing into the con of the moment, hurting Howard’s widow in the process. I just love how rich the subtext of so much of this show is. It can be analyzed and interpreted endlessly.

      Never bought the BS resolution here to Howard's death.
      It screams setup anyway you slice it.
      Gaslighting Cherryl can only go so far while she's off her game with grief.
      But the second she calms down and realizes Kim is full of BS, .she wouñd go after both of them guns blazing (were the bowling balls a cocaine hallucination too?), nevermind friends of Howard who would dig into the matter (between a wife and friends, there's no hiding a drug problem as severe as the one they pinned on Howard).

    • @BareBandSubscription
      @BareBandSubscription 2 года назад

      @@el_killorcure
      The bowling bowls don’t have to be related to Howard having a drug problem. Jimmy all but admitted to pranking Howard when he played his sympathy card to Cheryl. It doesn’t mean she’d naturally believe they came up with this absurdly elaborate scheme to make him look high one time at a meeting, especially with Cliff seemingly backing up claims of Howard’s “suspicious activity” (albeit, he did so with a clear non-answer). There are two episodes left, so it’s entirely possible that Kim and Jimmy still get found out, but even if they don’t, I really don’t find it hard to believe that such a meticulous, sociopathic-level plan could go by with only modest suspicion. It’s not like it doesn’t happen in real life.

In the hand of lesser creators, her character would have been killed off. The way she left is heartbreaking (we know how she and Saul felt). The wine scene for me is that Gus finally got a sense of freedom from all the shit, and he just wanted to return to his old life. Also, the story about the wine was great for me. Finally, thanks for this great channel, and I like your tiktoks a lot.

    I thought the Gus and waiter scene was a set up for the rare tequila....that he will eventually gift Don Eladio with, to poison and kill him, as well as to humanize him and show that he won't allow himself to enjoy, or go with a moment. Ultimately he has made up his mind that his life is all about revenge, so there's no room for anything else.

    Best episode of the Season. So rich in character. Point & Shoot prioritized action over character. This episode did the opposite. Both are valid.
    Seeing Gus try to make a romantic connection, but choosing not to because of what happened to Max really highlights what it means to pursue the life he's chosen to pursue. What does a two decade long pursuit of revenge cost? What is the potential consequence of making a romantic connection with someone while being entrenched in a criminal lifestyle? Gus can't live the life he wants to. I think that's important to highlight.

    Hi Cody - loving your BCS stuff. I think this show was always going to take its own route to the finish line, and reckon its ending will have a very distinct feel from BB. For me the wine scene was Gus momentarily allowing himself the pleasures of an ordinary (albeit rich) man - relaxing that tight grip he keeps on himself. The celebratory wine bottle her refers to - that could either be shared with some he loves, or be cracked open when the Salamancas are finally destroyed. We see him opt inevitably for the latter of those two. Yes it did go on a bit, but GE's performance was immaculate, and that final tableau of the wine bottle, etc was pretty heartbreaking.
    Oh, favourite line from rewatching the episode - Jimmy's 'What's done can be undone', totally without irony. A direct reversal of Lady Macbeth's 'What's done cannot be undone', when she's eaten up by guilt at the end of Shakespeare's play. Genius.
    Keep up the good work. Looking forward to seeing where it goes.

    i feel like the wine scene might be the last we see of gus for the series. It may have gone on a little longer than it needed to and was a little boring like you said but it was well written and a good way to sort of indirectly confirm Gus' sexuality and his true relationship with Max, and it works as a good send off to his character cause its really the first time we see him being very natural and human.
    edit: Also i want to think that it ties back to the quote that Mike and Saul have said in this episode and earlier in the show. "One day you'll wake up, go about your day like normal, then suddenly you will realize that you haven't thought about it at all" I think when he took that last sip of wine he suddenly remembered Max and had that moment, he kinda had to remind himself what he was doing and why.

      Except that Chilean wine isn’t nearly as internationally respected. Part of the scene was also to show that Gus was a connoisseur who appreciates quality. It’s an important part of his character, and that character doesn’t want wine from a budget region. He wants world renowned Bordeaux

    I mostly agree with your review except I dont see slow pace as frustrating, it was always one of the reasons I loved the show so everything's fine here. What I find frustrating is the open end of Kim's story yes she left Jim no we don't need a scene with her boarding a plane but I want to know what happens to her next. Well maybe they will still shows us. Or maybe they are setting up a new spinoff of a spinoff ;) As for the wine scene I admit I even failed to catch the purpose of it. If the purpose was as you described yeah we certainly don't need it at this point, that's probably why it didn't even occur to me that's what they were trying to show.

    I really don't understand how this episode could frustrate you, it's so solid in paying off every character moment. Better Call Saul is a show about character moments, less high octane insanity. Even my biased Breaking Bad preferring brain knows this episode was essential, you couldn't have some high intensity episode. You just needed emotional impact for this episode, and this episode was a gut punch, just like when Walt clashed with Skyler, just less bombastic

    You mean the self-gaslighting of him pretending he has one!
    He's been established to have been a dirty cop long before his son bought it, never regretted that once.
    Him working for Gus was 100% his choice, there was nothing pushing or coercing him in that direction other than "how can I best enhance my chances of really messing with Hector?".
    Him being nice about Nacho was simply him projecting his hurting over his dead son onto Nacho.

    This guy doesn't seem to recognize exactly what's going on in this episode. It's not just "an epilogue" to the previous 2 episodes. That just means you missed every bit of new information that came from this episode -- and I would say this episode pertains more to each of these characters (Jimmy, Kim, Gus, Mike) and who they are during breaking bad than even the previous 2 did. There's no way to tell that story without slowing it down and watching each of them try to process the hell that just took place. Go watch Die Hard 2 if you want things to just happen for no reason. This show is about characters changing thru choices & consequences. And more change took place here than just about any episode to-date -- especially for Saul Goodman.

    I agree that the pacing was deathly slow considering where we are at. It was all fairly predictable. I personally didn’t get the feels I thought I would and maybe it’s because the breakup was so telegraphed and the Mike scene with Nacho’s dad was pretty unemotional for the sake of making the point about gangsters being gangsters. I was great in all the usual ways but not the classic some are saying it is imo.

    I thought they should've ended the episode with the breakup. Doing the time jump to the start of the Breaking Bad timeline was a bit abrupt and awkward. I have a feeling the series is going to end with Saul turning himself in.

    Much more time could have been spent with Papa and Mike discussing in depth the next move with the Manitoba drivers licensee. I say this as Mike and Papa have much more in common now, both lost their only sons, plus Papa may still have to leave town much like Mike had to leave Philadelphia.

    I hated the wine scene. The gay angle I always thought was stupid. Living in Mexico is tough. If I watched my friend die after we clawed ourselves out of a life of poverty I would be bent on revenge like Gus as well. Sexual orientation should have nothing to do with Gus's angst. This character trait seems shoe horned in.
