Robert (or FPGAZumSpass) is doing with active development of the MiSTer FPGA N64 core, giving us 99% of a fully functioning Nintendo 64 on MiSTer FPGA. Let's talk about what happened, when N64 will his MiSTer FPGA Update_All, the videos I have planned for the future and generally just celebrate the progress made on a Nintendo 64 FPGA Core! and a MiSTer FPGA review of the N64 is coming soon...and I have plenty of MiSTer FPGA tutorials and MiSTer FPGA guides on the playlist!
but he ISNT done with the Turbo core as there is a brand new MiSTer FPGA N64 core that expands on the Turbo functionality and brings it in line feature set wise with the stock N64 FPGA core! and it will run Banjo Tooie at near to 60 frames per second!
The impossible Nintendo 64 FPGA core just got updated again on MiSTer FPGA! With huge improvements to the MiSTer FPGA N64 core bringing new life to so many best retro games! We now have LOD or level of detail which is another N64 hardware feature added to the MiSTer FPGA N64 core! N64 FPGA fun incoming! and now we have YUV support too so we have a FEATURE COMPLETE N64 FPGA core! and now Bangai-O has been fixed and is playable!
and here comes the big tests! Is MiSTer FPGA as good as real hardware for N64?
and now we have a MiSTer FPGA N64 Turbo core! That runs many games faster and better than a stock Nintendo 64!

I asked, you answered...and I try to listen :) Of all the requests for new content on the channel one of the most frequently asked for videos is a series on the Terasic DE-10 Nano MiSTer FPGA hardware...so here it is! Retro gaming goodness.
On this episode of our MiSTer series we are going to be talking about the recent happenings in the MiSTer FPGA scene in regards to the potential of a Nintendo 64 core for MiSTer FPGA! Nobody saw it coming...and it was long considered an "impossible core" but perhaps Nintendo's first 3D console might be coming to MiSTer soon! Which would be amazing as there are a ton of great games for it and software emulation, while much improved, is still a bit hit or miss. Plus modding a N64 for HDMI out is expensive and VERY difficult!
N64 on MiSTer FPGA would be a huge moment for video game history and preservation too!
The N64 core RSP work seems to be getting buttoned up...so next comes the RDP or Reality Display Processor which is in progress and it now has perspective correction built in! . Which means we can now "play" Super Mario 64, Mario Kart 64, Wave Race 64, even The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask...and some other items! and most of the corrupted graphics have been solved by this point in time! Plus F-Zero and Pokemon Snap now too! and Cubivore! And Animal Crossing...and 007 (no not GoldeEye yet) plus Pokemon Stadium! And Harvest Moon 64, and Extreme G and Glover 64...plus some beta Ocarina of Time!
But after the PS1 core on MiSTer (developed by Robert as well) and the PSX 2X core…nobody should doubt his talents!
and when it comes out just play Bomberman Hero, the N64 hidden gem of choice around this channel!

Banjo Smoothie
So bear chunks whirred up? That’s evil
😈
Played Quake 2 at 60fps the other day. It's almost uncanny seeing these games so smooth.
Seriously it’s like a brand new console
Quake 2 with a Voodoo card in your PC played buttery smooth back in the day.
Well sure but this is fun because it’s not supposed to be that good
Funny to think not too long ago people were saying an N64 core was impossible. Now we've got an overclocked N64!
So impossible it’s better than the real thing lol
Is possible but on mister it will never be 100% unfinished impossible 😊 nothing can defeat the real hardware the mister fpga is a rip off 😊
Lol yeah…real rip off
This is amazing, the MiSTer just keeps on giving (thanks to the hard work of brilliant people), given Rare is one of my absolute favourite devs and CBFD is almost my fave game oat (2nd only to OOT), Its kinda mad that I have never played Banjo Tooie, and now thanks to Robert I can play it for the first time in immaculate 60 FPS, which I'm actually proper excited to do, thanks to Robert and everyone who made this possible.
Now is def the time for your first playthrough
Haha, that tripod head analogy. Gotta respect a filmmaker's take on things.
oh man i can't wait for recompiled banjo kazooie and tooie
I can't wait either.
That will absolutely be awesome
Probably before we even know it
that tool only supports majoras mask iirc. Will require lots of work for each game still. Probably still better than source port from scratch, but not easy
@@x0j yeah that's correct. i think the excitement for the N64Recomp tool is going to bring a lot of people together to get as many games recompiled as quickly as possible. just speculation on my part though.
This is so surreal so see. If I remember, even the Xbox 360 port didn't run at 60fps. And tbh, the 360 version also just didn't have the same charm as the N64 version, it just felt...TOO clear. This might become the definitive way to play it for me
Def the definitive way for me now
Funnily enough when emulating N64, I set it to 640x480 and then use FXAA to give that N64 smudged look. While it also applies to 2D elements, the end result is strangely similar.
It’s funny how much time we spend improving things on paper just to devolve the image after the fact
@@VideoGameEsoterica CRT filters on the RT4K must be the ultimate realization of this! I paid a lot of money to make sure the picture is JUST the right amount of blurry ;)
Haha I was just using the 4K to capture and smear up a console to the point where it’s got VHS vibes and I love that I can do that
That looks incredible! Will the turbo core ever hit update all? Or will it always be a manual install only?
Manual install just due to how the repos work
@@VideoGameEsoterica Thanks 🙏 il have to install it, looks too good not to!
Way too good not to :)
"Tooie... we're home..."
Threeie when
It kind of reminds me of Dreamcast ports of games meant for the previous generation. Framerate is smoother out but not much more. I am always amazed at just how GPU limited games can be on even these older systems. Unlocking the framerate can reveal just how many games had an internal clock for 60fps.
An example was the game Destroy all humans on Ps2, it was originally targeting 60fps but eventually the decision was made to "screw the framerate, we want to do all the things!"
Haha this was the generation of “make it look good for 20 frames per second Vs meh at 60”
Nice! Where on the discord is the newest turbo core? I see April 25? Thanks!
That’s the one
@@VideoGameEsoterica ah, ok! Everytime I see a video of yours I’m wondering if there is another 😂
Haha I say “updated” if there’s a new core updates is just info
I think you bring up some of the reasons that I like to play games on software emulation where I have the option to, and frequently use, overclocking and increased internal resolution on earlier 3D platforms. They allow me to play the games as my younger brain remembers them rather than at the blockier and slower real life. Conversely I like running older 2D games with all the blockiness and no smoothing or crt filter options.
Everyone gets to change it how they want so I’m just glad we have so many good options :)
as someone new to patching roms, where can i find these 60fps patches for n64 games so i can do it myself and run them on the turbo core?
Just googling the game name and framerate patch will do it
@@VideoGameEsoterica ok ty
I wish we could lock the Framerate to 40 - 45 fps.
I don’t mind it jumping myself
@VideoGameEsoterica It would be nice to have both options though.
The engine is uncapped so caping it would probably create issues
A locked 30 using that turbo core would always be more preferable than a one varying wildly between 30 and 60. A locked 60? Rare Replay...
Just how the engine works being unlocked I’m the first place
I'm not hearing the music at the beginning. Not sure if that's intentional or if it was struck down by the content matching system.
Neither. I reduce all music to -100db, record and lay in VO then lift music. I missed that clip
Is N64 DD possible on Mister? I know it did not amount to much and was Japan only. But it would be cool to try it
DD converted games will run but no there won’t be a dedicated DD for the core
It's the N64 Pro
Haha basically
I do wonder if N64 cores can use High Res texture mod like on the emulator on PC
Maybe in the future on a larger FPGA
I can't even start to explain how much I love these kind of improvements we're getting in these days of retro gaming history. But I will admit that even before this video displays the FPS counter, I'm having a bit iffy about the variable FPS that we see.
I don't have the nostalgic experience with Banjo Tooie. so I don't know exactly how the game is supposed to perform. But I really want to have a full proper playthrough of the game. I'm unsure if playing it using a setup like this is the best way to go or if the Xbox [360/Arcade/Rare Replay] route is the better way to go🤔🤔
It did this unlocked ramping and slowing in the regular game too. You just notice it more now due to higher frame rates
Do you think that overclocking the processor of the real hardware that performance can be achieved?
Possibly but with much more effort and a lot more heat to manage
Right. Cool cool
I wonder if we can get at least a 30fps Wave Race 64.
I believe Wave Race is locked engine wise so it may need a patch
@@VideoGameEsoterica I figured at some point someone might make modifications with the recompilation project.
Would be fun to see
Has the core been updated?
Not since last month
What GameShark code is this? Link?
It’s a patch. Can’t link those here really
@@VideoGameEsoterica who is the patch creator or where can we get more info?
Can you show us some 60FPS Sin and Punishment and Hybrid Haven? 🥺
Maybe soon
First of all I love all your videos. But every time a n64 vid comes all I can focus on is the dust on your n64.
Haha it’ll never disappear
No intro sound ?
Oops lol
@@VideoGameEsoterica lol unsubbing! 4 lack of tuneage brahhh!
You know you can’t quit me
@@VideoGameEsotericaI wanna hear mariachi music next vid intro or im out
Best I can do is polka
i'm willing to accept an apology and a small symbolic payment, $35 post-fees at most
Best I can do is tree fiddy
@@VideoGameEsoterica ok, i feel like we're close to a deal here. and the apology?
Bag of encheliditos
@@VideoGameEsoterica i'll take it!
First you gotta sing the jingle
Maybe it's so fast that you lose the details.
I didn’t really notice any missing details 🤷🏻♂️
FIRST!
I’d expect nothing less
@@VideoGameEsoterica I hope more games get this treatment, I'm stupid excited for Kaze Emanuar's release of the original SM64 but optimized.
Yes seems like a lot of fun is coming the N64s way in 2024
"Robert (or FPGAZumSpass) is doing with active development of the MiSTer FPGA N64 core" -> done

Lol congrats for reading all the text and finding the one typo. Tell that story at your next dinner party with friends. I’m sure they will all pat you on the back for it. And maybe don’t say “engrish” in my comments. It offends some people
