Sega Saturn on MiSTer FPGA is now on update all and while its still in beta there are still a ton of of best Sega Saturn games and Sega Saturn hidden gems to play! MiSTer FPGA Saturn core fun times! and the FPGA Core has been updated again! Bringing in some important fixes to some of the best Sega Saturn games! so let's do ANOTHER testing update video on the Sega Saturn FPGA core because why not! The ram controller has been rewritten and fixed up in dual updates! and we have another new core as of 6/12/2024 and its on Srg320's GitHub page! Sega Saturn review fun incoming
You will see a HUGE improvement in performance on 2.5V MiSTer FPGA ram modules and a ton of other fixes!
and if you need a MiSTer FPGA guide I have them on the playlist :) along with MiSTer FPGA review videos and MiSTer FPGA vs emulation videos!
I asked, you answered...and I try to listen :) Of all the requests for new content on the channel one of the most frequently asked for videos is a series on the Terasic DE-10 Nano MiSTer FPGA hardware...so here it is! Retro gaming goodness.
SRG320 just updated the Sega Saturn core with new code...AGAIN......so of course we are going to test the new binary and see how it performs. and now it's been folded into MiSTer Main and Update_all! Seriously...the improvements in performance and compatibility is a small retro gaming miracle! A LOT of games we tested previously have HUGE improvements and some new games work that never used to! and some games that STOPPED working on previous cores are now back and better than ever! Plus Burning Rangers has a seriously awesome improvement!
and now we have new working games that never worked before as well! Amazing. This is a core testing video with user requests! So enjoy!
This core fixes a massive ton of issues from the last Saturn core. Also make sure you update MiSTer main as there are some CD loading fixes in there that benefit Saturn!
and now it seems like more people that have older RAM modules / the four chip ram module variants are seeing more success running the current Sega Saturn MiSTer FPGA core too!
and game saves are here! Which is HUGE for the core! Because playing Sega Saturn in FPGA on MiSTer FPGA without being able to save your game was NOT easy!
So that means its time to test a new batch of games...viewer requests too!
Note: this is the current build of the Sega Saturn core for MiSTer FPGA and NEW GAMES WORK! but really its the save functionality that is the huge thing! Also this is a MiSTer FPGA Sega Saturn setup guide as the core is once again manually installed and you need to switch to MiSTer Unstable Main vs being on Stable main...which I will show you how to do in the video!
This is part of the MiSter FPGA Sega Saturn testing series...but now with a brand new core build! So lets put it through its paces! Because the audio quality on the new core just sounds PERFECT...in spots!
Note; you may need to format memory depending on the game. See here vampier.net/Saturn/
and thanks to Andy D!

can a link be shared on where to find Srg320 Saturn test build please.
I tried a link but it points to a file and that gets YT angry. It’s on his GitHub under the issue tickets
It seems there is both a Srg320 and a MiSTer-devel one. I found it on the MiSTer-devel one. Use the search field in the top and search for Sega Rally. Click on the first result and scroll down to the screenshot of the options screen. Just below that, srg320 has attached an innocent looking file attachment, which contains the core
Pinning this
@@kennethchristensen6529 Much appreciated Sir. I found it from your comment.
Can you please start putting the date of the core you are using on the thumbnail?
Agreed.
Or in the video title or prominently in the video description.
@@blahdelablahit seems to be in the video description - dunno if it was there when you originally posted this comment.
I put it in the description
It’s been there since the vid went live
Rockin the 2.4 ram i got in late 2019. Great vid!
Super old school module
Sky textures in Sega Saturn MechWarrior 2 actually look sick. That game had a bunch of special versions on PC for different early video cards, and they all had different graphics as well.
It’s a game I haven’t played in forever. I need to give it another replay
Everything that didn't work before is now working, things like both of the Cotton Games and Final Fight Revenge. There wasn't a game I tied that didn't work.
Good to know and glad it’s getting you better results
Sega Rally is still broken (White Screen after main menu) & major audio issues with V2.5(C) Ram :(
Sega Rally is working perfectly fine for me...
@@RetroGamer_George 2.5c ram?
@@Ransom1122 I'm not sure exactly wich version of Ram but I bought my Ram pretty much as soon as the Neo Geo core was released years ago, i have had a MiSTer pretty much from the beggining. Previously I was luck to get 30% of the games working, now everything I have tested is working. I use to get these funny lines on the top of the screes with Die Hard Aracade and now is its perfect.
@RetroGamer_George strange I got my ram same time as you... if you look at your ram module it'll display what version it is
I got one game file “salamander deluxe” and loaded the core all the osd options were there but screen was black when I tried to load…is this my error or is the core update help? I can try this weekend as I am away from my setup on travel
For the first time, I finally installed Sega Saturn games. I had some issues with sound or games not running at all. I'm currently running v2.5 ram chip, I just placed an order for v3.0 ram chip hopefully it'll be better.
It’s still a good move :)
I got my Mister at the end of 2020. No idea what board revision I have, and don't know if I can find out without opening it up (which I don't want to do). The issue seems moot though now. It's always seemed to run everything fine, including PS1 N64 etc.
Then you should be fine :)
I hope in the next few years we start to see better tools to make it easier for development so we can see some quality home brew games like the genisis gets
The tools are improving. Just needs more time in the oven
Would love to know Andy D's capture settings for the MiSTer CRT filters as I find that, while it looks great on the HDMI outbound monitor I play on, the filters captured look horrible and nothing like the raw output. Have tried adjusting OBS settings and different MiSTer visual filter options, can't get anything to look good in a capture.
They just never capture well honestly
This is extremely exciting. My ram is circa 2020, maybe 2021, so I'd been wondering if this was my issue. I only really play a few Saturn games (mostly the Sonic ones) and I felt like there were places the audio was missing and I wondered if it was my RAM.
99% chance it’s the ram. A 2020 board most likely has a 2.5V module
I love puzzle fighter recently beat it with my kids wish we get a sequel someday
It’s a classic even if it’s 100% not what you would expect from Capcom
I actually had to go and look at my Mister addons purchases to see which RAM module i had lol. it's 3.0. looks like i just lucked out in having the good RAM lol
If it’s 2022 or newer odds are everyone has at least a 2.9V. I think 2.5 was kind of sunsetted in 2021 per memory
So, not much of a change (or no change at all) for those with the sdram 3.0?
Oh, almost forgot... What about games that requires disc swapping? Do they work?
May still be some small improvements here and there
Does Mister have options to handle those 480i Saturn games better?
Not yet but presumably later in development
I think that's the last thing I need to fully not miss the real hardware I put in storage 😅
I’m sure it’ll come towards the end of the core development
"Others Are Still Inside, Save Them"....
A classic Sega line with classic Sega delivery
Have you seen the Marsupial Mister Multisystem? If so what do you think of it
Interesting concept for sure
where do you recommend we get ram for the upgrade (I have 2 sticks, but older build and 1 stick was from Amazon so kinda shady)
Depends where you live. US = MiSTer Addons. Not US lmk and I can let you know
@@VideoGameEsoterica US, thanks. That is what I was thinking. I think I bought from them before, but I know I got my "snac" adapter from BlissBoard, but only use 1 port for actual adapter (Intellivision controller). Use 8bitdo M30 with usb dongle for most playing. When Taki releases his, might do entire new build with different controllers for each core, think that might be way to go.
Porkchops ram has always been reliable for me
LOL after so many of us upgraded our RAM 😂
At least I didn't throw away the old stick
I was too broke. :) This validates my broke-ness!
@@emmettturner9452same I didn’t know this was the reason for my broken sound in the Saturn core
Haha I mean doesn’t hurt having the new stuff
Haha you win
Yes lot of sound issues on 2.5V
I have a V2.9 module and refused to upgrade unless it was absolutely necessary.
2.9 and 3.0 are near identical. It’s just a change in ground. Which does not factor into core performance. So you are golden :)
I'm on the 2.5 ram, will test now and report any changes
👍lmk how it goes
@@VideoGameEsoterica just tried a few Saturn games and i have no sound .. hmm
Odd. At all?
@@VideoGameEsoterica didnt have time to try all the games, but the ones I tried had no sound at all
I update all again and now its seems that all the games are working very well now , maybe it was something with my setup, but the sound is now working perfectly
Dumb question but how do I check what RAM I'm using if I bought my Mister prebuilt?
Open it and look at the module. Only way
Are dual SDRAM modules required or will it work with a single module? I'm on a single v2.5 module. If it requires dual, I think I need to upgrade to a digital board.
Single is 100% fine
@@VideoGameEsoterica Very cool. I'll have to check it out.
👍
I got 2.5 YESS!!!
Enjoy the new core :)
After running "update_all", my Mister tells me the Saturn core is still version 24.03.23? Any idea why it hasn't changed to the 24.06.12?
These are manual install only and not added to the main repo
@@VideoGameEsoterica The video description stated the updated core was "folded into the Mister Main and Update_all", so I was under the impression it was gonna be installed automatically after running the script.
Copy and paste mistake maybe. I’ll look into it
@@VideoGameEsoterica That's understandable, considering the numerous videos you make. Thankfully, one of the comments here gave a helpful guide on how to find the file (by searching "Sega Rally" in the Mister-devel github). I installed it and the new core is a HUGE improvement!
With how much time he spent working on this latest update, he definitely didn't just RAM it through!
Banned. 7 days!
Hints on the upcoming arcade boards?😊
Fighting game. 3D
@@VideoGameEsoterica Psychic Force
Maybe…
I don't even know what version ram I have, is there a way to tell via a script or mister settings?
No script. When did you buy it?
@@VideoGameEsoterica I want to say it was 2021 ish.
Would guess 2.5V
Woo-hoo! I have the Antonio Villena low-profile 4-chip module so this is great news for me. :)
I had the same ram but I couldn't wait! LOOOL
Let me know how that tests
@@VideoGameEsoterica I have the same 4-chip module and it actually works just fine now with this new version of the core! Before I had graphical problems even in the startup screen and no games booted - I have tried a handful of games on the new one and everything just plays. I am so happy!
Good to know. Four chip was a variable I hadn’t heard much on yet
I hope everyday that the geniuses and nerds that are actually doing all of this stuff are praised with luck and fortune. Cause god knows my dumb ass could never do this stuff 🙏🙏🙏❤️
Haha they are def appreciated
This probably sounds petty but I really wish some of these updates would come to update-all. I have an issue with my MiSTer where removing the micro SD card has about a 10% chance of the card falling into the unit case which is a giant pain. So manually updating cores, for me at least, is a bit risky and a definite nuisance.
Why not FTP into it and send over Wi-Fi?
Turn the case upside down when you put the card back in
Always an option
@@ScottWozniak I've just been doing updates over ethernet so I don't even have the thing hooked up to wifi. I still imagine something like that is possible, it's just a matter of figuring out how to do it which isn't at the top of my to do list.
@@VideoGameEsoterica funny enough but this has been my best solution to the issue so far.
I'm using USB. I just got a 8bitdo Saturn controller.
Also a valid option!
The pronunciation in Japanese of Elan Doree is:
eh ran dooru. No pause in between. I don't know why they picked doree as it's sounds way far from the Japanese pronunciation.
Good question. I just always say it phonetically. It’s almost always wrong but it never comes off like I’m doing “a voice” since I don’t want to make anyone think in immigrating / making fun of an accent. I don’t want this to be a Breakfast at Tiffany’s read lol
Saturn emulation is so poor that I would actually consider forking over the cash for fpga if this continues to improve
Def worth the cash
2.9 is "on order", I have 3 Misters, so I have to check the old ones. And before anybody goes why? 1) MiSTer for Desktop Gaming, 2) MiSTer-Cade (Jamma), 3) Mister (Irken Labs) for New Net CIty.
I have three so I don’t judge lol
No need to explain. No low-latency display is ever 100% complete without a MiSTer.
Only 3?
@@dynatroniX86 Yeah I'm still a beginner :D
I like your videos and I will see them anyway. But you must recognize that every time you publish a video that says new core update, the logical thing is to think that it really is like that, and not that it is a core that has been published for at least a month ago. If you put it in the description, people have already seen the video and I know that is the purpose of not putting it in the title. As I said, I will continue watching your videos, but recognize that there is some clickbait in these titles.
The core was published this week. Not last month. It’s in the description with the date. So I do not know what you are talking about here 🤷🏻♂️
First paragraph. Dated with directions on how to obtain
Ok I apologize, I didn't saw this update un discord server, so my fault. But if I wrote this comment is because most of the time is like I said before...
There “updates” which is testing and there’s “updated” which is new cores. That’s how they are titled
@@VideoGameEsoterica ok ok...
FIRST!
And not last
"so much fun, PVM, I own the game, I am terrible at playing this game" Here is 99% of your 'content".
And 100% of your personality is weak comments. Which is worse
Think about this for a second. This guy makes content and has 35k subscribers that seem to enjoy it. If it's not your thing, that's fine.
You however, pop up on almost every single video to post something stupid like this just to be a troll. Do you have a life? You clearly don't like the channel, yet take the time to constantly be here to troll him. And you're always one of the FIRST comments 🤣Like you've made it your job.
That behavior speaks volumes about how sad your life must be if this is how you spend your time.
This makes me laugh every time. It's so odd that someone would be this upset and obsessed with a RUclips channel. If it bothers you so much why not just block the channel? VGE what did you do?! It wouldn't have something to do with the 4th planet of our solar system would it? 😜
Haha he does it to other channels too. It may be the only interaction he gets daily
Haha you think this is bad you should see the emails I get (not from Dr. No. at least I doubt it)
