    Billy! This is my first "real" drone, and per normal, I am a bit nervous. Your tutorial helped to calm my nerves, assuring me that I won't lose or crash it very easily. I turned it all on. You speak clearly and methodically,. I appreciate that a great deal!

    I used the Smart RTH feature with my Mavic on my first flight and it was fantastic. I didn't have any marks on the ground to compare against, other than a rock, and the Mavic landed within a foot of where it took off from. I'll have videos eventually. It's been raining every day for the last week.

    ON the main screen there is a line that shows how many minutes of battery life you have left. when That number moves down to the H on the line, or the H move up the line as you fly farther from home, that means you have enough battery life to turn around and go home. With smart return to home checked it will go home when the minutes left and H meet..

      Great tool, to be sure. Though IMO one should gauge by voltage, and not percentage/time stated. Safer. To each their own, however.

    Billy, The precision Landing got a lot better yesterday I did a return Home and it precisely returns exactly where he took off, I was so impressed that I did test it again and the same result. (Phantom 4)

    Sup Billy, another note on the RTH I'm not sure if it pertains to the Phantom, but for the Mavic for sure, Is if your distance isn't far enough away from the homepoint and you press RTH, your drone will go into an automatic landing, if your distance is within a 5 meter radius of the home point I believe. I experienced this the other day after a night ascent and had to maneuver and land manually. So word to the wise, know how to fly and land a drone if all those fly itself features fail. It also says it in the manual about the distance, which i read afterwards hahaha

    Hi Billy, about RTH setting altitude to max. I query the wisdom of using that as a matter of course. Often when wishing to get the Drone back you're going to be on the wrong end of battery power & some distance away. making the Drone climb & descend an extra 200ft each way is probably going to use a fair bit of power for the most cases unnecessarily and chance not having the power to get home

    • @billykyle

      That is a good point there. I wasn't accounting low battery, which I should have done

    • @matthewelyash6538
      @matthewelyash6538 7 лет назад +2

      Jedburgh01 is right, RTH altitude is or at least should be situation and site dependent. my RTH is 30m if it is pretty flat, and up to 120 m if I am unsure of the height of ALL obstacles in the area. My question is... Does DJI GO or GO 4 take into account the RTH altitude setting when deciding when to come home? Does the yellow H Circle on the Flight time line change when you set it differently? Inquiring minds want to know!!

    • @basspig
      @basspig 6 лет назад

      I wonder about what is the right RTH altitude to use when taking off from a mountaintop forested area and flying a mission into town and back. If I hit RTH, I want to be sure the drone is going to be at the right altitude on final approach as to clear trees on the mountain. A secondary concern is how accurately it descends and clears surrounding trees, to a landing pad, say on a flat rooftop.

  • @netfolks
    @netfolks 7 лет назад

    Very nicely presented as usual. I would mention that to get home faster don't go into RTH if you got there in a roundabout way. To save time on the return, if there are no high obstacles just go into sport mode and go direct, straight line, back to home. I don't think the Mavic remembers if it had a back wind when it arrived at a destination so it won't know if there is a bad head wind against it for a return. Thus, the quickest way back in sport mode would be wise, especially if there is water below. Would you agree on these options?

    I live on a sailboat and fly my Phantom 3 a lot over water. I sent it out about 500m away and lost signal....app said magnetic disturbance. It just stayed hovering at 100m. I was panicking and after 30 seconds it came home on it's own. I am lucky I regained control because it wanted to land in the water 10 feet off the deck starting point. Thanks for this video, I am going to go to a popular open spot on land and practice/test my drone for losing signal to avoid it going in the water.

    Thanks for your great video Billy! I have a problem that I can't get resolved and hoping that you may be able help me with. I recently purchased the new iPad 9.7 with cellular mainly to use with my MA while boating for the Return to Remote location. I'm receiving the following popup in the DJI Go 4 app; "Mobile device GPS signal is weak, it's location cannot be acquired." I did GPS signal tests for the iPad alone with the app GPS Diagnostics and Google maps. All tested perfect reception. I tried RTH to remote location in a field yesterday away from any type of interferences such as metal, concrete, towns, etc. I have 16 satellites w/ wifi at 2.4 in DJI Go 4. I normally use my iPad Air 2 but, As I mentioned, I bought this new iPad mainly to use off my boat due to having GPS. If you have any suggestions to correct this problem, I would sincerely appreciate it. As always, Thank You for your great video's!! I have learned so much from you! Happy Flying, Ray 👍😊

    Great voice, details and demonstrations in your vidz! Thx a lot! It made my entry into the drone world much easier! Thank you!
    I have a special situation, where I am not sure, how to put my settings correctly. In the woodz, under the trees, I have disabled obstacle avoidance & set the Mavic to hover, when the transmission to the remote gets lost or interrupted. But I cannot find, how to not let the Mavic RTH, when low-battery-RTH gets activated. At this time, I have to abord the RTH, so I can take control, before the Mavic hits the branches or leaves of the trees. I wish I could enable a "hover (or land) when battery is low"

    • @matthewelyash6538
      @matthewelyash6538 7 лет назад +1

      Billy mentions this. Instead of Return to Home, either select Land or Hover as he shows at around 8:40 in the misc section. Thanks for asking the question.

    • @gogovitch66
      @gogovitch66 7 лет назад

      Thank you for your reply. I fairly know, what has been said around 8m40 and have it set let this. But it is only the setting for signal loss. What I'd need, is the Mavic to hover, when low-battery-RTH wants to launch the Mavic up to my RTH-height 😉

    I have an intermittent return to home sometimes when invoked it just goes into landing made, but not always, sent it in to DJI dealer he just refreshed the firmware on both the drone and controller. Other times it will land on the take off mat, one time it come to me. It’s never consistent. Could my data plan on my iPad pro be interfering be with the signal, I was told is should be on

  • @wbopdcdrone738

    Your description of " Smart Return-to-home" is incorrect. " Smart Return-to-home" is when your drone will initiate return-to-home when it decides there is just enough battery to return home based on distance from the home point - this will only work if you have a signal. What you describe is Fail Safe RTH available in certain DJI models like the P4p. Fail Safe RTH is when the drone loses signal to controller and it attempts to retrace its path until it regains signal and then stops, if it does not regain signal within about 30-60 seconds it will beeline it home. To make things even more confusing 'Smart RTH" feature of DJI drones and the "Smart Return-to-Home" setting in DJI app are completely different things. Smart RTH is when you hold down the return to home button on the controller and the drone will beeline it to the home point. It's all very confusing and not made obvious by DJI.

    It’s 2020 now, I have Phantom 4. RTH is giving me issues. First, the P4 , remote are all updated with current firmware and software ..
    I set the RTH height to 60. Then set max height to 90.
    So, I auto takeoff. Then put the P4 up to 100. feet and fly a good distance away from the home point. I press RTH , P4 starts climbing to the 60 BUT KEEPS GOING UO TO MAXIMUM HEIGHT .. then hovers and no return at all. Then I have to fly back manually. Any ideas why this is happening ? Thank you

And the iPhone 8 Plus has the app for DJI installed on the Deactivated Cellphone of IPhone 8 Plus. for my Current Cellphone that is Actived the DJI app will not download in to it ! As a friend who been fly my 1st DJI Phantom 4 Pro Plus drone. is flying okay when had it in this Repair Shop. Hello Billy, great info on the RTH function. I have a question my friend: Is it possible to cancel the RTH function just minutes before the Drone reaches the location?? What Im saying is that its seems practical to me that we can use this function when the drone is far in the distance but once you have it on a 6 to 12 meter ratio it would be better to re-gain control to land it.

Previously it was working perfectly when I fly my drone more than 500 ft. away but recently I have been using the RTH feature when less than 30 feet away and each time it decends to land at its current location. Hi Billy, I’ve been doing some training on my DJI P4P and doing great, but the RTH function is not even close to my take off point. Should I calibrate the compass before take off? I have set the app and I notice the app tells me the home point is set, I check the map and it looks right...seems like it is off sometimes 50 or 60 feet, could it be the area I’m in? I have been using my driveway and then I tried in the street but the accuracy is not even close.

    something to think about after reading rth from a moving boat. If you move the boat with drone set on p-gps it will stay on the original spot. BUT, if you put it on ATTI mode or on manual mode (phantom V2+) will it move with the moving boat? similar to throwing up a
    rock into the air from a moving car (convertible). Well? This is an Einstein thing.

    Love your blogs. Watch all of them. I've often wondered how you get the drone to RTH when "home" has moved. For example, if I launch from a boat and then try to RTH but the boat is now in a different location, will the drone attempt to land at the old location? How do I get it to land at the new location?

    • @NathanVong
      @NathanVong 7 лет назад +2

      Eric Moody your best option is to return to your controller not the location.

    • @billykyle
      @billykyle  7 лет назад +2

      +Eric Moody The drone land where the Home point was set originally. I would never use RTH on a boat, like seriously hahahah would not recommend. Although you can set the home point, the boat will always be moving.

      Yeah, return to home if your boat is not anchored up would be "rather sporty" In a pinch I would use return to the CONTROLLER function.

      One Tip I suggest when flying over water, (in case of a water landing), is buying a Gettr-Back, which is a small unit you normally attach to fishing poles. It attached with a velcro strap, and has a small float that releases after a few minutes of immersion. That float has about a hundred feet of fishing line on it and you can hopefully retrieve your drone from the icy depths!
      Yeah it doesn't help the drone float but it doesn't affect flight times or handling either, and your chances of a pool noodle solution not tipping over on a water landing is directly proportional to a number of things, so your probably gonna get the electronics and battery wet anyway.
      I never fly over water without one.

    Why does the P4P s Not Respond to my input. It is a struggle to get it back, and sometimes it crashes. That's in Beginners Mode. My last flight it climbed very high and didn't seem to respond to the RTH. No problems, it descended at full speed into the asphalt ..That's in P mode and RTH in Beginners Mode. Why?

    Thank you for the RTH video, I do have a question not related to RTH. I'm confused about interference from my phone. When I start my Drone should I have the DJI go app running? In testing my new P4P I get a message that my phone signal is interfering, to be careful flying. Any thoughts?
    Thanks in advance.

    Hey Billy, whenever I try to return, I will be about 150 feet away. The drone climbs to the set height, turns to me, then instead of coming back, it keeps climbing! Any help would be appreciated.

    • @gpetheri
      @gpetheri 4 года назад

      Sounds like you're too close to use the RTH function. I did hear somewhere that if the drone isn't very far away, and 150ft isn't very far, it does not perform a return to home. Try it a lot further away and it should work fine.

  • @4everdex

    Setting your RTH altitude to almost 100m is pretty bad advice.
    In Germany you have to do a test to be allowed to fly drones anywhere near people. You should learn to always set your RTH altitude to a proper height depending on your surroundings and site of operation.
    The highest obstacle near you is 20m high? Set it to something above 20m -> like 30m
    there is a really large building somewhere near that might be about 70m high? -> set altitude to about 80-90m
    Setting it way too high will drain your battery heavily for no reason and make the flight longer than necessary. RTH is a safety feature you usually use, when your connection breaks or there is anything you did not expect. Those two criteria are very important in such situations. Setting it totally wrong is a safety hazard.
    Good video though.

    Billy,
    Great video as always. Thanks. One question. I am flying a Phantom 4 Pro PLUS, and there is no SMART Return to Home feature that I can find. Of course there are RTH settings but no SMART setting. I am on the latest firmware and DJI GO app version. Do you know why this might be?
    Thanks, and keep up the good work.
    Jeff

      Hey Jeff, thanks for the comment. This is very strange as smart return to home was introduced with the Phantom 4 Pro series. I just poked around a few forums for about a minute or two and found nothing regarding this issue. It might be best to contact DJI Support about this, or even do some harder digging than I did.
