  • The time finally came to buy a drone. I got a deal that I couldn't pass up on a DJI Phantom 3 quadcopter. I intend to use it for fancy shots in my videos and, honestly, to have an awesome toy/hobby.

    The drone does fly out 5km or for people in US 3miles which is pretty impressive since you can get live feed out that far.

      +theodoro89 the Phantom series are not quite as professional as any 6 or 8 rotor platform, but they're still not to be considered toys... this is your "toy"

    Here it is 7 years later and I'm getting great value from your video. I was gifted a Phantom 3 Pro recently. It came from a Real Estate photographer who was retiring and wanted to pass on his quadcopter. I didn't know him. He was an amazingly generous man who said the drone paid for itself many times and he wanted to pass it on to someone who would appreciate it.
    Circumstanced kept me from flying it for months. Today I am going to fly it for only the second time. It is a bit windy (within the numbers from DJI). I was waiting for a calmer day, but your video has encouraged me to give it a go.
    I'm glad to see you are still posting 7 years after putting up this video.
    Thank You.

    As a Phantom 3 Advanced (P3A) owner I agree with your assessment of your P3P. I only want to add that in the 4 months that I have owned mine I have been impressed with the upgrades that DJI periodically makes to the firmware. There are features that I have on my P3A that were not on it when I bought it. One of the best (useful to me) is the "follow me" feature that when activated will as the name suggests, cause the aircraft to follow you and record you as you go about your activity. It actually follows the controller but you get what I mean. Not so impressive though is DJI's customer support. Hard to contact, unresponsive are terms used on the various forums and boards that I am acquainted with. Even DJI's own Facebook page has customers complaining. Just saying.

    Thank you.. GREAT video demo.. comforting that you were able to learn with the Phantom 3 rather than wasting time and money on a cheap drone for practice. I'm apt to just jump in with this system... did you use post production software to stabilize the video, or is that right out of the camera as is? The Phantom 3 Pro is on sale right now... sooo... I guess it's time!

      +Frederick Dunn Not buying a $30 Hubsan x4 and spending 20 minutes with it is an extremely stupid thing to do. You should ALWAYS start with a Hubsan or Nano QX or at least a Syma X4 to practice and learn the controls. It's definitely not a waste of time or money

  • @michaelwilkes0
    @michaelwilkes0 4 года назад

    you say its not autonomous, but return to home is pretty darn autonomous. if it lets you set a waypoint other than home, that would be the definition of autonomous, so its pretty darn close. also, phantoms and mavics seem to cause the most trouble for us drone pilots in the news. when you make a drone video with a phantom, you might rattle off a couple of the obvious rules, like stay away from airports, aircraft routes, and crowds of people, and dont linger over peoples homes very long. good job mentioning the 400ft rule. i appreciate that. also, you did it right, you should just pop up to 400ft to get your shot and then quickly come back down. dont hang out at 400ft for too long. news choppers fly that low sometimes and you often cant hear them. great job at everything and welcome to quadcopters. i fly racing drones, its a blast.
    EDIT: Oh dear, i just noticed this video was 4 yrs old. well my comment is still applicable.

    Thank you for sharing this. I have a P3 Standard. I really enjoy flying it, when the weather is right. The other day I was in my Father-in-Laws back yard when off in the distance my P3 was hovering and drifted into some branches of a tree and she went down. Thank goodness not much damage was done. I still need to do a test flight to see if my P3 still can maneuver around. Once again, thanks for sharing your video

  • @avidgamer2011
    @avidgamer2011 9 лет назад +4

    I really need to stress this. it's really important to know that despite it being easy to fly, it can go wrong. something like a hubsan x4 would make a good and fun tool to hone your skills.
    I don't want to be that guy, I have a phantom and I love it, but a lot of people who buy a phantom without previous flight experience can make very severe mistakes. mistakes which can not only be a pretty big punch in you wallet, but ruin the hobby for everyone. I would be totally down to communicate with you more 1 on 1 if you have any questions about multi rotors and rc aircraft in general.

    • @johnni37
      @johnni37 9 лет назад +2

      +Larocka totally agree and cannot be stressed enough. Invest $90 on a cheap quad and learn to fly that first. It helped me immensely. I can fly my cheap quad indoors room to room, down hallways and land anywhere. Very useful before graduating to my P3.

    • @Ian_MacGregor
      @Ian_MacGregor 8 лет назад +1

      +Larocka most definitely, soo much better to lose a $100 or less toy than to lose an expensive piece of machinery. plus the small weight of a toy grade is much less dangerous if it losses battery and falls on someone or something. I think every major drone retailer should sell some sort of toy grade quad and recommend that as a trainer for the higher level stuff..... or even better, make some kind of package deal with both, so you have something fun to learn on first before even setting up your expensive one.

    you should not be flying over the pubic , what if it lost control and landed on someone ? . the US are now going to make you register your drones as the are too many noobs flying and crashing there phantoms in unsuitable places. always fly safely :)

    • @GranVlog
      @GranVlog 8 лет назад +2

      +jack00scarecrow you loose signa. the automatic Return to home will start and fly it back to where you took off and land. registration wont do shit. if people want to take risks they can just remove theyr name from it or buy a different brand or build it themself. :)

    • @jack00scarecrow
      @jack00scarecrow 8 лет назад +4

      9 times out of ten its the return to home function that causes fly away,s its a very common problem with the phantoms. people dont wait for the gps to pick up 6 satellites and it returns to the last place you have flown it , if that was ten miles away thats where it will head too . you should not fly over the public at all , RTH wont help if an esc dies or the battery dies or a prop brakes off !! always fly safely :)

      I bought my DJI 3 Pro and received it before New Years 2016. I was having trouble downloading the Update Firmware, I wasted about 18 hours with all the confusing information from DJI. I prepaid to send it back for them to do the Update. It took about 3 weeks turn around time from East Coast U S A to the West Coast USA.
      My weather has been bad, so I still haven't tried to fly it. I'm still watching a lot of Video's and tips. Also bought a New I-Pad 2Mini but now have to download the DJI-Go Application, which I was having the same problem before, that I could not download this application. Next week Rain and 40 degree temperature. I was hoping DJI would do the Firmware Update on a Micro Card Reader or Flash Drive and send it to me, then I could help someone else that need to get the Update. They should be able to buy them cheap in Bulk and then load the firmware to the Flash Drive.

    All this time later, mid 2018, I STILL think the P3P. $200 more than the GoPro Hero Black. The P3P was as good as the initial P4. The range topped the P4. That’s argues, but the P3P. I was a tad to hung ho, and while plain* “speed racer” going full speed, half mile away, and I managed to hit some power lines connecting 2 street lines. It did a forward flip, fell to within a few feet off the road, but the gimbal and quad snapped back to stability. It started climbing back up to the up to the impact point, horizon crooked, acting a little drunk. Only did I take control, and as I flew it back it got back to normal. Damage? A little grease, and a little dent on the gear. Amazing. I flew two full miles out to sea at dusk, headed back to shore, hit the beach a couple miles North, and flew home, low over the surf and beach as the sun was setting. Beautiful footage. This thing was way ahead of its time in the DJI lineup.

      Well at least we agree he's being a souche.
      He says its not a drone, then calls it a drone.
      What a douche.
      And that mustache?
      Douche.

      Yeah! I mean, I'm building a quad right now. It's no drone, but if I gave it an extensive sensor suite, powerful processors, and programming to the point of nigh autonomy, it could be one. But until then it's just my "acrobatic ultra portable remotely controlled FPV enabled quadcopter," which if you ask me sounds cooler than "drone" anyways.

    you can use course lock mode and you dont have to worry about orientation. It will always move in the direction you push the stick, regardles of where the nose is pointing.

    Oh! I forgot to mention, the last two quad copters retail for just under $200, which I thought would do better than the $100 one! Some how, they always landed upside down and sooner or later the gyro would mess up and fly sideways instead of straight up. Good video, thanks. I subscribed!

    Nice demo. I flew my neighbors DJI Phantom 3 the other day and it is indeed easy to get started with. I had never flown any RC aircraft before and was a little concerned that I would wreck it, but it went pretty smoothly. I will be looking for a deal like you got.

    Love those DRONES (quad copter, pish posh) especially now that they are crash-proof? Thousands of Americans flying a Chinese made drone with Russian Satellite quidance in the US - who'd have thought :)
    PS: That is a quite stable video! Now I see how the drone video is much better than it would appear to be by watching the actual quad flip back and forth. It's all in the gimbal.

    I love this drone, but just to clear: A device does NOT have to be automatic for it to be a drone. While this device is a quadcopter it IS ALSO a drone. Drone is not being overused here, it is a correct definition. Drones are 'a remote-controlled pilotless aircraft or missile'.

    *** I have a couple questions, and I'm hoping that you might respond. It's 31 March 2018 and just watched your video. Now that you have now had your Phantom 3 Pro for almost three years, How is it holding up ? Have you had any real issues with it? I ask because I am seriously considering the purchase of one. Any input would be greatly appreciated ! PS. Great Video!

      Scott B Traveling I have two Phantom 3 Professional models.... and the only thing I will say about them is they are great.... until you crash one..... because DJI discontinued both the advanced and professional models. and u can not buy new parts unless you are lucky enough to find “new/old “ stock parts on eBay or amazon. I personally think that the light Bridge System installed in these two models is the reason they discontinued both models.... only to be replaced with models reverting back to using WiFi transmission systems......

    This is a video of great quality. You covered pretty much anything I was interested in and you did some impressive shots out there. Impressive how the DJI itself and the gimbal can handle fast winds at those heights without crashing or getting shaky shots. Everything was really well balanced and smooth, especially nearby some other antennas and radio towers which could interfere with the DJI's GPS signal. The 'Return Home' feature is great. It seems like this Phantom 3 has everything I wish my Phantom 2 had. Guess I'll wait until the 4th comes out then :)
    P.S. Great audio quality for your voice! Did you use some sort of external mic? One of those attachable to a shirt? :)

    Awesome video and Information. I did not know that the DJI Phantom was so sophisticated. It almost has automatic pilot. I have two cheap Quadcopters. The Syma X8G and the JXD 509G. The Syma takes a lot of experience to fly.The JXD has automatic hover which makes it easier to fly. I am saving my money for a DJI Phantom 3 Professional. Thanks for posting a very in depth video.

    Thank God for cinemascope cropping. Seems like the blades reveal themselves quite clearly at the top of the frame every time it goes backwards (7:24) & even forwards at times (8:13-8:18) lol. I'd imagine this could have been easily avoided had the designers positioned the camera cage a little further down... At that price, not sure how that was overlooked during the design phase. Also not too sold on the camera quality at night, but hey it looks like a winner overall. Definitely on my Christmas list lol.

    Nice review video. I didn't read all of the comments below and not sure if it was mentioned, but wanted to point out that you didn't have the antennas on the controller pointed outward (like rabbit ears). I'm surprised you didn't have any reception/signal issues which could have had a bad outcome. Make sure to point those out before flying.
