One thing your video shows, but you didn't acknowledge, is that when the Phantom 4 is flying at its top speed, the propellers do come back into the view. You can see this at around 4:43 of your video. I've seen this in other video reviews of this drone. Yes, you could point the camera down to avoid "seeing" the propellers, but that limits your choices of how you capture your scene. This is where the Inspire 1 would be a better choice, although it is substantially more expensive. The Phantom 4 looks like the best choice overall. Especially on the issue of stability. While I know both drones have internal image stabilization processes, the stability of the drone itself is extremely important under any weather conditions. Regarding the maximum distance the drones can fly away from the controller, I don't see any problems with this. Flying the drone a mile / kilometer away is pretty damn far. I think with careful planning of your shots, you won't have the need to fly so far away. Three miles? Really? Good review. I have subscribed and look forward to future videos. Cheers.
bushgreen DJI has the Inspire drone, which has legs that lift up above the camera level so you avoid seeing them while filming. Of course, it's a more expensive version. But, probably worth it if you're going to use your drone for filmmaking.
This was the most helpful and thorough feature comparison I've seen. In fact, this was the most thorough feature review of the Phantom 3 alone as well. Thank you!! Fantastic video..
Great review Tom. I can tell this took a lot of work. Found it interesting how the flight time for p4 was only slightly more and p3 flies further. does the p4 still have the same intelligent modes and is there any improvement in the way point mode? Any ability to pre-plan flights?
tom, first I want to say how much I enjoy all of your videos, have been super helpful. now the question: I am a bit concerned with the prop connectors, I really love my P4, but those little white things want to snag on everything in my back pack, until someone makes a prop motor protector for the P4, I might be a bit extreme and sacrifice a set of props and cut off the blades and just keep the round cap center, what do you think about the new connectors? and those little white things, they sort of look like a piece that might break. thanks
Hey Tom ... I have a question about the Active Tracking feature on the new P4. Is there a way to tell the drone to adjust altitude/filming angles etc in Active Tracking mode? For example: In your video you are only tracking the girl who is running from behind ... would it be possible to have the drone move up to the side of her and then turn around to the front and film from that angle as well? Thank you!
Tom I just had my P3P die in-flight and fall into the ocean, video just froze then it fell like a house brick into the ocean..battery was reading 89% at the time was in the air for just a few minutes..what would cause this, drone was 4 months old..dont want to buy another one if they fail like this...please advise
Hey Tom, your comparison is quite awesome.. But.. I am not agreeing with you on your long flight test - i have the phantom 4 and i have a flight on 4,1 km away, still with full controller and video signal.. Otherwise NICE! Keep up the good work ;)

You forgot The biggest downside of the Phantom 4. It costs approximately 600 € more and as a film maker only usability and picture quality counts and you can fly with both the way you want and the quality is even as other tests said. Yes the P4 is nice but 900 € vs 1.500€ are too much for these features.
Good but some of your facts are completely incorrect 1- tilted horizon problem exists in the phantom 4 also 2- props show up in videos for the p4 also. The reason why you didn't see the props in your video is because p4 flys slower in P gps mode hence there is not enough pitch .therefore props don't show. In your video clip you can clearly see that the p3 is flying faster and this is why you see it's props.
So Tom...by clicking on your link with DJI you benefit? I wish I would have done that when I ordered my Phantom 4. I will from now on. Love your stuff!
Saray Mubasiri The Avanced and Pro range is the biggest difference. It depends on what you are going to do with it. Where I fly, I need to be able to fly 1 to 2 miles out. The Standard maybe all you need.
Amazon Reviews report WAY more disconnects and fly away's with the Phantom 4 vs the 3. Is anyone familiar with this issue? +Tom's Tech Time ? If I'm spending around 1k I'd really like to be sure it isn't going to commit suicide on me! 23% of reviews for Phantom 4 on amazon are 1 star! That is insane!!
3:20 in the U.S. we are not permitted to fly at night... are the new props more balanced than the P3P stock props? Is there a practical video use for that new maximum speed? Or do you consider video stability and image quality to be more important. ? I think I'm glad, that for now, I've decided to remain with the P3P... for me anyway, this isn't enough of a jump in image/video quality. I do like that the props don't show in video files, but again, that only happens during higher winds, or during faster operating speeds. Thanks for the review and comparison.. very well done.
It's absolutely NOT illegal to fly at night. Says you must maintain visual line of sight and fly responsibly. VLOS is alot easier at night with the lights
Just went by the FAA before you fly video guidelines... "never fly at night" I guess that was crap, not surprised. Glad you received permission, I don't know why they bother putting out non-applicable rules.
Excellent video, covering all the key issues. Improved stability will help in a lot of filming low altitude situations when the wind doesn't cooperate. Range of the 3 Pro and Advanced are fantastic, but illegal to use. The strength of signal quality may help with lower altitude shots. I'm disappointed in the flight time increase vs promised 28 minutes. I have been steering newbies to the Advanced for $800 and more batteries as of May 2016. 4K video is hard to justify, edit and store if you are not a professional film maker. Great value in the Advanced with 2.7K video. Not sure the "follow a person" is very useful. They need to allow you to name and store a POI flight, so you can repeat it. Ideal for construction project updates, seasonal changes of the same POI and other useful storytelling. I think more should be made of the capabilities of the still photos, which are much easier to share and have 95% of the artistic value without all the moving of the videos. The new lens on the 4 may be worth the entire cost upgrade if you take great still photos of interesting subjects. Less distortion, lower light levels and less high ISO noise might be worth it. Someone needs to post some cityscape still at night using the Pro and 4 to compare the camera lens quality. I have the 2, 2+, Advance and Pro, but can't justify adding the 4. Probably need to garage sale a lot of the old ones to newbies to get them started cheap.
users say they can see the blades still. yes the p4 is better but the price difference between the p3 and p4 is huge. I'd rather pay £600 than £1200 for not a great amount of difference.
+bushgreen Agreed, the conclusion was stupid. Of course it is SOMEWHAT better, but the only thing that is interesting to us is, whether this is worth a 50% higher price!!
You talk about flight time...I'd say that the percentage of flight time to promised is more important. If I say 22 minutes and you get 19, is that worse than someone who promises 40 and gets 29? I'd say the one who promised 40 is lying more...
Hey Tom, good comparison. The prop view mentioned is the only inaccuracy. Only with collision avoid (CA) enabled will you not see props, unless a gust of wind hits it, or you fly toward the sun at certain times of day, which flickers prop shadows. With CA enabled top speed is only 22mph, way to slow most the time. Disabling CA in P mode is like a P3 at about 35mph, and in S mode it will do over 40mph. There was one important omission, P4 has a 2X camera zoom in the Go app when recording in 1080, which basically crops the 4K sensor. It works good, very handy to have. FYI, zoom is not mentioned in the manual.
+Tom Spurlock Zoom in from the app, really? Wow! Is it variable or like two fixed position zoom? Still a great feature to have. Thanks for sharing that important info. DJ SOUL FORCE

WARNING this guy only does marketing, NOT real quad comparisons - I know without watching, he's gonna say (as instructed and paid forby DJI) BUY THE NEW ONE !
I bought a P4 and put over 50 miles on it before I returned it. While fast and good looking, the range really sucked. So, I took my P4 back and purchased another P3P on super sale. I predict future P4 problems: 1) The camera contacts the ribbon cable on the P4 when off. 2) The quick release props on the P4 make fail over the self-tightening screw-on types. 3) The range seems significantly worse with the P4. I've seen my P3P to 15,000'. The P4 barely made 8000'. So...what good is extra speed and battery life when the range is significantly reduced??
Edslittleworld Nice! So you got an extra battery aswell? I'm looking into buying the p3p my self but I don't know when the prices go down. I'm here in Canada lol
My phantom 3 SE 4K not wobble... And flight time is litle beter... good value for money! it makes no sense to overpay for something that you can lose.. Very good movie!
Saying every single minute counts when p4 wins time but saying that they both have great charging times and it’s a tie when p3 wins totally rigging this
Thank you for the detailed comparison review. I have the P3 and have been considering the P4 but this has made my mind up for me to stay with my P3. Thanks Again :)
hahah you can tell he doesn't know much about multirotors. There is another reason those props don't show in the video, the 4 is moving slower! (less tilt) the reason it has sport mode is because it flies slower in normal mode!
Thanks for the great comparison video. DJI has served filmmakers very well. Both the Phantom 3 and 4 are extremely capable filmmaking tools, and with the release of the 4, the 3 is now extremely affordable.
+Ho Stevie! ---- I started with the P3 Standard and after just 2 weeks changed up to the Pro. Worth every penny and then some, just for the range. I rationalized over the price difference, then realized my errors. I had very little confidence in how far out I could push the Standard when I started getting weak signal and loss of signal and I could still see the drone profile in the sky. I'm taking less than 1000 feet max in reality. And the other major "whoa" difference was the video signal! With video over a separate WIFI link for the Standard, I would lose control sometimes before video, and sometimes visa-versa. With the PRO, your video signal and control signal are through the same link, but the video downlink is through Lightbridge, which in turn travels over USB from the remote to your tablet or phone. Much, much better video signal ratio to the control signal. They are pretty darn close in degradation the further you fly out. I was at 5000 feet our this weekend and the signal drop was about 50% for both of them at the same time. So, my advice is to save up for the Pro. I ended up buying Both and now looking to sell the Standard on Ebay or to a friend.
Ah man I would have bought your Standard if I knew! I already ordered one, it's coming today. I only need it for surfing, so I don't think the distance thing will be an issue... at least I hope not!
I agree with what you're saying, Greg, but would instead recommend the P3 Advanced, not the Pro. The only real difference between the Adv and the Pro is the 4K resolution. Not sure about you, but I never film in 4K (editing and end user issues problems, for the most part). The Advanced holds all the same benefits as the Pro, like what you're saying, but at a compromised cost between the Standard and the Pro.
You got me at the propellers part... I was about, REAAALLY CLOSE, to buy the 3 Pro for the price difference, but I've always hated videos that propellers interrupt. Ill just save some money and get the better option. Thanks man. Great review.
A few things to keep in mind though. If you're upgrading from, say the Phantom 2, the props are compatible. Nothing else is, but at least you'll have the additional props. I got the P3 Advanced, and to avoid prop shots when moving forward, simply tilt the camera down a touch, or move at a slower speed and adjust the speed post production. I calibrate my compass whenever I fly in a different spot that I was before, so stability is no issue at all for me. Obstacle avoidance would be nice, but like you said, don't rely on it...if you can't 100% rely on it, than what good is it? I wouldn't be flying any different than I am now. Just my 2 cents. Good video, otherwise.
Jason Powell I haven't seen that, no. I don't recall a book that had that many pages in it either though. With the Phantom 2, it was recommended to recalibrate the compass any time you flew more than 10km away from the previous flight area. That's kind of what I base my practices on, maybe it's overkill, but I can't imagine it's hurting anything.
Page 51 for the Phantom 4 says: Calibrating the Compass Only calibrate the compass when the DJI GO app or the status indicator prompt you to do so. Observe the following rules when calibrating your compass.
The phantom 3 pro in this video is the new version (with 2312A motor). This new version has reduced power in Lightbridge, means shorter range than P3P old version. So the winner for range is P3P old, P3P new, and then P4.
If DJI will add a few more degrees to the rotation of their gimbal, then you could fly forward while pointing the camera backward. By flying forward the collision avoidance sensors could give you some protection while you're shooting a subject that you're pulling away from.
Not sure if it was said before, but the short flight times I think are due o the fact it would return to home and land at this point. It is all ready home so they will land. Tray this again with them 200 or 3oo meters at and I be the will start return to home, then land. Think of the extra flight time as Bingo Fuel.
The phantom 3 standard price is only half of what the Phantom 4 is! I own the DJI Phantom 2 with a GoPro Hero 3 + camera and it costed more than the phantom 4
When you flew forwards to show that you don't see the props on the P4, you felw faster with the P3 than with the P4. I don't have to tell you that this strongly influences the results.
This was the best detailed review I've watched of this product. Honest, direct to the point and I even learned few things from it as an owner of Phantom 4. Thanks. Subscribed.
Tom, great review, however you got one thing wrong. The issue of props getting into the view of the camera, it's worse on P4, versus P3P. If you measure the distance of the camera to the props, ITS CLOSER with P4! The camera sits 9mm higher in the P4 versus the P3 when you sit it on a table an measure it. MEASURE IT! You'll see DJI didn't tell the truth. The props aren't higher, the camera is! The props are identical in height when sitting on a table. Measure it! This makes the camera closer to the props, and when flying in identical wind conditions and identical speed, you'll see worse results with P4, although it's slight. You should review this yourself with and MEASURE things, don't believe DJI. They are not always truthful, like the 28min flight time of P4, when it's really 23min max with ideal conditions, and typically 20min.
You really created the definitive comparison video here. I'm really impressed .... most excellent job. I'd love to have a P4 for all the reasons you pointed out but simply can't afford one after buying the P3 just before Christmas (of course they came down in price right after) :-) I don't understand the comments below from people who somehow think you are in cahoots with DJI. Even if DJI gave you the P4, the information you provide is straight forward and factual so I don't see what difference it makes. In any case, keep up the great work :-)
Had my P3 Professional for almost 2 weeks. That horizon camera tilt was annoying. Calibration after Calibration... Anyway, the P4 price went down so just in time to return the P3P and get the P4.. Can't wait to just get out and fly instead of jacking around with calibrating the camera..
I have seen lots of videos about all kinds of rc-models, drones etc. - and I am VERY impressed. Very professional work, good sound, good picture quality - I would book you if I ever had to do a "documentary movie"... VERY WELL DONE !!!! Carsten, Hamburg - Germany
Good Video I have a Phantom 3 Advanced and never had any problems with it yet still pretty new too bad they came out with the 4 like 5 month after I got my phantom 3 but I still love it !!!
I have a few serious issues with the 4.1 - the fly time is not accurate,,infact VERY little improvement..Why bother lying about it, it's going to be found out.!2 - Distance/range - Again not even close to the specs,,according to your test. Infact NOT EVEN CLOSE to what DJI is bragging. It barely hits over 1 mile..not that we need to go that far, but at least be honest about what it will or won't..!Sport mode is nothing different from ATTI mode on P2v+.The speeds of the unit is nothing to brag either, in fact with a full batt the P2v+ can do 42 miles/per/hr. I have done it myself.I was really looking forward to the new Phantom but on the fence when comparing features and price. The only benefit I see is the avoidance feature, which actually seems to work, with in reasonable hope. The one thing I have not heard about yet is the tilt control on the remote,,how does it feel and is it easy to adjust when flying at the same time.???????Also not mentioned is the screen/Lightbridge lt,,,what comes with the unit???????????
I loved your review. This was very helpful in deciding if the Phantom 4 was worth the extra $500 rather than get a Phantom 3 Pro. My only negative feedback is about your "TomsTechTime Deals" self-promotion. The link is just a referral link but doesn't actually offer the customer (your viewers) with deals any better than they can get anywhere else. I can get the same prices through DJI's website or through Apple or another dealer. If you have a fair number of interested viewers who would be willing to buy through you, I'm sure you could work out a partner/bulk discount with a representative from DJI.
My Phantom 3 Professional NEVER bounces around like yours did when comparing the hovering stability. It seems like you didn't calibrate the compass on the P3 before you did that hover comparison. My P3 stays EXACTLY in place always.
I have: two p3 advanced (one with 4k), one p3se(4k) and one p3pro. the biggest downgrade on new phantoms (including my se, had to mod the controller) is the range... i know that you don't have to go 5km away... but if you take shots around a big building you will lose signal and return to home will crash your drone in the building. Same on big rocks and other stuff that will be on your signal way.
Hi Tom! does the Phantom 4 Series have that tap to focus like the mavic? I really don't get that. I don't want to have to be constantly tapping the screen just to focus the camera. This sounds so backwards. I currenty have a broken P3P and I'm trying to decide if I should be refirbushed one from DJI or just jump up to the Phantom 4 line. I've also heard that the P4 does not have as much range. My P3P had crazy range over 2 miles easily!!! That is one thing I really enjoyed. Just for the solid connection if nothing else, as we still have to fly in line of sight
I got mine, pushed the home button and it flew back to China.
haha

+VFX Todd but for the phantom 5 they should hang the camera lower and put taller legs for it so the propellers never come into view.

I was abale to buy a Phantom 3 Pro for $700 exactly half the price of the Phantom 4. I think the 4 looks great, but savings were worth it for me.
Can someone please invent a little screw thingy that will raise the propellers on the P3? Thanks!

Hovering uses more energy than forward flight. Forward Flight test should be done.
Super video!!!
ISO test was unfair. The phantom 4 gets a view directly under a light, but while the 3 is facing away from the light.
the problem is that the P4 is wayy more expensive than the P3 Pro

Obviously the newer updated model is better....without surprise...but good video. I think Ill be buy the P3 Advanced as my first drone

Can't go wrong with the P3A. You don't need 4K or a 100W charger. I find the P3 flies better, but the camera isn't as sharp as a P4. I now own 2 P4s.
I got the P3S. Really wished i got the P3A instead

That's hard to believe, But before you fly the P4 you have to Load all the updates and Calibrate EVERYTHING!! My buddy and We LOVE OUR P4's
+Frederick Dunn and only a 2 minute battery advantage, no real reason for the upgrade.
It's absolutely NOT illegal to fly at night. Says you must maintain visual line of sight and fly responsibly. VLOS is alot easier at night with the lights
+Shady your right. i just got done flying at state capitol building at night, and i got permission from faa as well as neighboring airport.
Just went by the FAA before you fly video guidelines... "never fly at night" I guess that was crap, not surprised. Glad you received permission, I don't know why they bother putting out non-applicable rules.
+Frederick Dunn i think your reading "proposed laws". If it was up to them, they'd ban it outright.
I like to see the props in the shot
wish you could hear the drone too through the cam
I would pay 600$ alone for the easy prop removal lol
Obviously the phantom 4 will win. Every new phantom is an improvement. they wouldnt go backwards.
+bushgreen But he is testing how much of a difference and if it is worth the extra money.
+bushgreen Agreed, the conclusion was stupid. Of course it is SOMEWHAT better, but the only thing that is interesting to us is, whether this is worth a 50% higher price!!
+DrFlox the title is stupid. its like saying "iphone 6s vs iphone 6. which will win?" loool
Why is the Phantom 4 so expensive..
You talk about flight time...I'd say that the percentage of flight time to promised is more important. If I say 22 minutes and you get 19, is that worse than someone who promises 40 and gets 29? I'd say the one who promised 40 is lying more...
Mate! What a fantastic comparison! VERY WELL DONE! A HUGE amount of work has gone into this video. Thank-you and Hi from Australia!
Great vid, THX from Germany. Its gonne be a P4:-))
Awesome. Viele Grüße aus Deutschland zurück! Please purchase your P4 through my link to support my channel for free: click.dji.com/_9NUClUMvs7-T-lg?pm=link&as=0004 Stay tuned and fly safe!

Hey Tom , can you give a review of my girlfriend. .... im not sure if shes workin righ... she may be broken?
that's a very common problem, have you tried unplugging her and plugging her back in?
Aj Berarducci i cant seem to calibrate her MIU compass
YoungBlaze Of Chitown If I were you id just throw her out and get a new one...
I predict future P4 problems:
1) The camera contacts the ribbon cable on the P4 when off.
2) The quick release props on the P4 make fail over the self-tightening screw-on types.
3) The range seems significantly worse with the P4. I've seen my P3P to 15,000'. The P4 barely made 8000'.
So...what good is extra speed and battery life when the range is significantly reduced??
Hey man what was the super sale price you bought it at?
R. Malik I got it for $825 at Best Buy after a price match from Amazon. Plus, the extra batteries were $109.
Edslittleworld Nice! So you got an extra battery aswell? I'm looking into buying the p3p my self but I don't know when the prices go down. I'm here in Canada lol
R. Malik If you have a Best Buy or similar "big box" store, they usually price match. Give it a try!
Do you have trouble with the propeller being in the frame when flying forward like in the video? If so is it really annoying to deal with?
My phantom 3 SE 4K not wobble...
And flight time is litle beter...
good value for money!
it makes no sense to overpay for something that you can lose..
Very good movie!
looks like you're always wearing lipstick lol ;)
Do not People with ADHD because I have itAnd I will not subscribe to you if you’re making fun of me
Saying every single minute counts when p4 wins time but saying that they both have great charging times and it’s a tie when p3 wins totally rigging this
i like phantom 3 more than 4. because 3 is cheaper than 4.
I hate when they promised 28min flight time but real flight time is Only 21:48.
Thanks for a Great review! ... now we will wait for your review on the Typhoon H!
masha Allah nice review bro, will try that link too .... saving up for the P4 :-)
the range is the most important point. because with more range it easier to spy
+Drone Captain lol
DJI reduced their range in their new products. the Phantom 3 pro (old version) has the furthest range of all DJI Drones.
and compared to the inspire 1 ?
Yes, P3pro (old ver) has more range than Inspire 1.
The inspire has longer range
The rotors don't show up anymore he says plays the next video rotors show up
Thank you for the detailed comparison review. I have the P3 and have been considering the P4 but this has made my mind up for me to stay with my P3. Thanks Again :)
If you don't want props in your shot get the Inspire
Its disappointing about the battery life.
hahah you can tell he doesn't know much about multirotors.
There is another reason those props don't show in the video, the 4 is moving slower! (less tilt)
the reason it has sport mode is because it flies slower in normal mode!
Ha film makers with low budget phantom 4 is like 1,400 $
Thanks for the great comparison video. DJI has served filmmakers very well. Both the Phantom 3 and 4 are extremely capable filmmaking tools, and with the release of the 4, the 3 is now extremely affordable.
I think I'm gonna get a Phantom 3 standard, it's so much cheaper!
+David Vazquez Lel.
David Vazquez Yep, that's the compass calibration you're doing, and it's a good idea to do it every time you change locations.
+David Vazquez has no one read page 51 where it says Only calibrate when the app or indicator indicates to do so?
Jason Powell I haven't seen that, no. I don't recall a book that had that many pages in it either though. With the Phantom 2, it was recommended to recalibrate the compass any time you flew more than 10km away from the previous flight area. That's kind of what I base my practices on, maybe it's overkill, but I can't imagine it's hurting anything.
Page 51 for the Phantom 4 says:
Calibrating the Compass
Only calibrate the compass when the DJI GO app or the status indicator prompt you to do so. Observe the following rules when calibrating your compass.
Jason Powell ok. I was talking about the Phantom 3 Advanced. It might be the same though, I don't know.
Хороший обзор. Мне понравился. Excellent review. Present to me the Phantom isn't present money to buy it))
The phantom 3 pro in this video is the new version (with 2312A motor).
Which drone are you talking about at 6:05
Great review Tom. I'm still a noob flying my P3S and loving every minute of it. I do look forward to the day I get my hands on a P4 though.
Excellent video and well compared - P4 is the way to go - think I'll notice the difference compared with the P2 + Gopro ;-/
I think p3 wins. p4 is a total downgrade from the p3 except for a few new modes. big woop. vertical studio app does the thing as the p4 on the P3.
Pe la pi banding saiz bateri utk depa berdua ni...
you would think the damn horizon issue would be fixed via FW update for my Phantom 3 standard and professional! ;(
not true props still show up in phantom 4
When you flew forwards to show that you don't see the props on the P4, you felw faster with the P3 than with the P4.
I don't have to tell you that this strongly influences the results.
I need this Phantom 4 in my life.
This was the best detailed review I've watched of this product. Honest, direct to the point and I even learned few things from it as an owner of Phantom 4. Thanks. Subscribed.
Another great video.. Thanks Tom! Now to make a decision whether to upgrade or not?????
I want it so bad. But that price. 😭
Thank you! Don't understand a word on English but on video all is clear!))
Sexy chem trails in da sky @ 10:15
So when are you doing a giveaway contest of the phantom 4?
+Hector L Whenever someone gives me a giveaway unit... :p
In any case, keep up the great work :-)
thanks tom. I will be getting the phantom 4. your the best.
❤😂🎉😢😮😅😊. ไฟแอดพ์ ?
this was an amazing video, you put in so much effort, one of the best drone videos on youtube and the views reflect it!!
I Have the DJI Phantom 3 Advanced is very Nice !
can you make a video above the DJI Phanton 3 Advanced ?
P.S Nice Video ;)
+AaronGamer HD nice
:)
