This is so deep. I like this part 3 most cause it got to the vulnerable side of the band. It clearly show why the band should be honored not just for their creativitity but their level of experimentation which is probably second to none to this day!
Wow. This is everything I wanted that BBC doc to be. Cuccurullo era is, was, and will always be my favorite era of Duran Duran, and it's SO good to finally see it get the respect it deserves. Can't wait til the Medazzaland episode!
Agree to a great extent that the Cuccurullo era of Duran was probably the most creative version of the band as they were starting a new sound which would go on to capture a whole new generation of fans who remain, till this day.
Too bad they make it perfectly clear that the wheels were falling off the band as early as 1995, what with Simon and John secretly recording their Thank You parts without wanting WC to know about it.
I was in grade school in the 1980s, and knew of Duran but I didn't get into them until The Wedding Album and went backward getting into all their original stuff. Such a huge influence on my life. Thank You was a huge hit with my friends and I in the summer of 1995. We could not stop playing White Lines.
Well “Thank You” for this brilliant film, so much to take away from an era that is otherwise lost/forgotten/buried. Always great to hear Simons isolated vocals, Crystal Ship is brilliant. I treasure my gatefold vinyl of ThankYou👍
These videos are fantastic.. being a DD fan since the 1980.. create to hear how the ideas and material comes from an idea to a record .. well done and thankyou ..
You forgot to mention how Warren's former Missing Persons bandmate Terry Bozzio played drums on "Thank You", "Success" and "Drive By". Thank you for having Lamya's vocals in the last part of this episode. She left this world too soon.
The problem with "Thank You" was that the internet was in its "infant stage". Imagine today's internet back then.... Polarizing fans and critics would be an understatement.
I think it was ahead of its time, the album is a beauty. It blends and crashes different tastes and monstrous skills. Eclectic all along and at its best
I was active in the early Duran Duran online “community” (mailing lists and BBSes) back then. I recall so much enthusiasm for White Lines, and no one understood why the record company pulled it as a single 😢 I really liked Thank You and still do.
It's truly fascinating to see how different everyone's perspectives are on Thank You- both the production and the actual content. The different stories tell us how much was going on- truly a frenetic time!
This was a much better video than I was anticipating. The album gives a good insight into what was going on with the band. John was dealing with his addiction and I think this album was when he was at his lowest. Right before he went to rehab and turned his life around.
Ugh, music critics. Most can’t play a lick of music and who’s opinion means very little. Absolutely loving this series and can’t wait for the next episode. Going to put on “Thank You” for a full listen again 👍
This is so fascinating and to be honest such a welcomed eye opener into the point of this , in my opinion, incredible album. To hear the minute and gory details of how all of the songs came to be is like finding a new and fresh way to be even more intimate with a band that in many ways is so much a part of me and my amazing time here on Planet Earth! Duran Duran thank you for “Thank You” and for composing the soundtrack to all that I know of what it means to be alive. Oh and the critics can suck it…. Really. It’s too special for them anyways. ❤❤❤
Really enjoyed this, so here we go: Thank You By the way, this album easily belongs in the top five/top six best albums they've made, if you ask me. Refreshing to watch all this.
Wow this was something. I hope one day there is a deluxe versions with all these numerous unreleased remixes. Kudos to band for the refreshing take of all the unapologetic opinions and views of the band by the producers. Loved hearing all the stories so far.
It's been almost 30 years since Duran Duran released their Thank You album. To be honest, the drum beat that Anthony played on "Ball of the Confusion" still deserves a Nobel Peace Prize. Of course, there are and have been many brilliant drummers in the world, but this beat is simply unforgettable because the whole game is so different. And often when I show it to drummers, they suddenly don't know what's going on :) It's worth a listen. And anyway, the whole album is brilliant, I can only recommend it to those who like to immerse themselves in the game of music.
Oh wow this is amazing!!! Where can I find The chauffeur (Etna beats remix) and Drive by (Barbarella picture remix)??? I have to have them absolutely!!! 🤩🤩🤩❤️❤️❤️
This is great! Favourite episode so far and loved hearing about the making of this album which didn't deserve the disrespect it got at the time. But what I really want to know is who is Barbarella Pictures?
I think Carsten mentions somewhere that this is Duran Duran sounding their best musically - or something like that! And I tend to agree with that statement. They had a virtuoso to show them the way, to play ad hoc, not to rely on triggers and beatboxes indefinitely. I’m still very much in awe of Thankyou. I don’t think most appreciate how intricate the songs on this album are to play. Simon is at his very best with Watching The Detectives and Lay Lady Lay. He sounds so emotional and raw - and he needed to be, to be convincing. It’s really sad how the splinters began - so soon after TWA aswell. It’s probably why many artists prefer to be on the road as opposed to being cooped up in the tiny constraints of a studio, where it can be so easy to not just turn up. It’s hard to imagine that Thankyou will always be the most underrated covers album by one of the biggest selling bands of our time. Unreal. Yes it got hammered by Q. I recall sending out letters expressing my discontent to editors of such magazines at their relentless criticism of the album, including the likes of NME - who loved to hate Duran Duran. However, I think if the promo was there.. and if the band were more united, it could have turned out differently. I love Perfect Day - but as a first cut from the album? No chance. It’s not a radio friendly song. There’s better on there. Success is one just song. But anyway, I’m going to have a watch now - and enjoy learning about an album that Duran Duran decided long ago not to brush the cobwebs off. Very sad that the album will be heard by so few.
Suscribo lo mismo. Sin Warren, la banda nunca habría transcendido más a yá de los sintetizadores y el "Hause". Thanks John - the comment is much appreciated. The funny thing is when I went through all my TY stuff for the documentary I found the 'Q Playlist' (you can see it in the video at the 32.15 minute mark). And what did they recommend? 911 is a Joke. To be fair - it may have been a sarcastic addition to the list but having said that there's no indication of that. So they may have secretly liked it before jumping on the TY hating bandwagon. And yes, in my opinion it is their best sounding album. Everyone sounds amazing on it - especially Simon. Thanks again for watching.
@@FRPAPvision Haha. I wrote to both Q and NME and they both featured my letters - and they ripped me to shreds. I read them back recently and I witnessed the uncontrolled, crazy, unhinged passion of a Duran Duran fan who was 28 years younger than he is now, going to battle with media veterans. Unfortunately my sword was not as sharp as theirs. They thrived on sarcasm - the nod to 911 was most definitely the killer blow. No coming back from that mate!
25:33 Nick's role (in my opinion) isn't as "keyboard player" he is a sound architect like Brian Eno. He's almost like the audio guys on a motion picture.
I wish this documentary would go beyond Medazzaland and cover the band’s discography up to Red Carpet Massacre. I would love to hear about the drama behind Astronaut and RCM,
It said at the beginning that this was the last part, but Medazzaland would be covered in the next episode? I really hope so, I’m really enjoying these! 🤟🏻👍🏻🙂🙏🏻🎧🎹🎼
@@FRPAPvision love what you’ve done here. Finally, a documentary that does justice to the band and the team around them. Many congratulations on what you’ve achieved. Can’t wait to the next installment
Will be looking forward to it.@@FRPAPvision The Medazzaland era was a roller coaster! It was during the time frame I really got into the fandom and started getting into the demos and the remixes and all the bits and pieces of news and rumors flying around what would have been the early days of the Internet
Artistically Thank you (album) may have benefited from Anthony J Resta being given carte blanche. Maybe he should have been around at the inception of recording so that the disagreements with John could have been compromised over?
It still sounds thin, not sure what they are talking about. Production on Notorious, Liberty, Rio sound much better, full rich deep sound VS thin & bright
Guess they teach that whole “they’re desperate, flailing” bit in critical school…… never listen to talentless hack critics, and that would be all critics.
The history is gonna repeat itself again. The band is currently on tour and by the end of this year 2023, they will be releasing another cover album this time with Andy taylor with the exception of two new songs.Just why ? why another cover album they didn`t learn anything from thank you?Its a great album for me as a die hard fan but general public won`t accept it.Another career suicide?
Its not going to be covers album. It has 3 new tracks and half the remaining tracks are new versions of old DD songs so, not a pure "covers album" and its not like Future Past is the massive juggernaut that TWA was, not by a long shot. 2 totally different situations in 2 different era of music. Not the same situation by a long shot.
This is so deep. I like this part 3 most cause it got to the vulnerable side of the band. It clearly show why the band should be honored not just for their creativitity but their level of experimentation which is probably second to none to this day!
The best of the 3 parts, yes!
Finally a unbiased documentary that does not hid Duran Duran's era with the Amazing Warren. Infinite Spirit. Love Medazzaland!
I want all these alternate mixes!

I guess this explained why WC never returned back even when Andy left again for the second time
Anthony J. Resta’s face while listening to his mix of ‘Lay Lady Lay’ is pure joy ❤
It's a pity that they removed that fretless bass part...

I’ve always loved the “Anyday now” on “Drive By” cleverly borrowed from Bowie’s “Diamond Dogs” ❤

So... is this going to be a four-part documentary instead of a three-part one? I'd really enjoy that!
