      At one point a curved display and a bezel-less display were pushing the boundaries. Even face unlock (infrared version not the terrible photo version). I'm sure we will see something again. Foldable smartphones might be that thing.

    • @Mikri90
      @Mikri90 6 лет назад +1

      Yet I had people telling me how modern iPhones are better than a FF 5D camera. Yes, people are that ignorant.
      And it is usually wrapped up in a typical "technology is advancing every year, hurrr, durrr" catchphrase which is worth jack shit. People will never stop spouting such nonsense without actually realizing that the tech behind camera sensors remains largely the same. The details of the sensor architecture change, sure, but there was no new large breakthrough in sensor tech for a while now. But of course an average smartphone "photographer" knows nothing about that.
      A FF sensor is tens of times the area of a typical smartphone sensor, so a larger sensor based on the same tech overall will be better especially one that much bigger.
      Sure, the sensors do get better over time, but those improvements can't tip the scales in favor of a smaller sensor if you compare it to a much larger one. And lets not forget that the final output is also dependent on software, so it begs the question how much of it is the result of actual hardware improvement, and how much of it is due to improvements in processing.

    Woulda been awesome if people hadnt pre-emptively shat all over Windows Phone. Reviewers are guilty of it too. I got bored with Android and Apple, so I used a Nokia Lumia 1520 for 2 years. In spite of the reported lack of apps, I had apps for just about everything I needed, and to this day I feel like it was the best experience Ive ever had with a smart phone. The OS is miles ahead of static icon grids in practical use. I loved it, yet nobody seemed to want to take the time to understand its benefits because "ewww it doesnt have snap chat".

      I'm sticking with my trusty 950, but i still have the 1520 and use it as a small tablet nowadays. Still goes just fine! And the battery life of the 1520 is just epic!! On average it does 4-5 days, even as phone, making calls, watching some youtube vids the lot. I had the 1020, and sold it, but I still enjoy many of the superb pictures i shot with it. if only people would choose for potential, instead of present day performance, but the average person is just too dumb to understand what that means....

      I had one of the first lumia phones, not sure wich one, 900-something maybe? however, I think windows phone was amazing, it realy was fun to use. and it was something different for a change. surely it wasnt as mature as android or apple back than, but people never gave it a chance, for the reasons you mentioned. maybe you also remember webOS by palm, that OS was also way ahead of its time, that OS was genius. it got killed just like windows phone. We could realy need a 3rd or 4th smartphone system, just so we have more choices than only apple and google. but that wont happen anymore.

      the only problem with Windows Phone was that nobody liked and they the same Microsoft did big mistakes like at first in first versions do not have an notifications centre or switchs for basic things like wi-fi or screen rotation lock those mistakes made things go wrong, also people when was released windows phone 7.5 they expected have the same amount of apps than they had on an matured Android OS althgought be glitchy but were apps avalaible for virtually everything ad people since do not had much patience then do not was able to do much also Nokia never did any advertisemment on my country at least or have stands of sale on shopping centers on Chile for sell their products, a different approach that HMD is doing with set up stands and make their products avalaible worldwide , tyhe same Europe centered Nokia had the guilt of make windows phone fail.

    And I thought you were my guy Juan and you just out here hurting my heart. 😁 I still have my white Lumia 1020 with two camera grips and I have been saying for years that the Lumia 1020's camera sensor was held back by that generation's processors and Windows Phone itself. Aaah, that sensor with a Snapdragon 845, QHD screen, 3500mAh+ battery, microSD expansion, dual pixel focusing, updated software processing algorithms, dedicated image signal processor, and running Android Oreo. 🗣 HOW HARD IS THAT?! 😂 Doesn't Nokia own any of that tech from the Microsoft partnership? +The RaRa85 all marketing and perception. Even when the 1020 was new you had a bunch of tech pundits jumping thru hoops to explain why the iPhone was still a better camera than the 1020. That entrenched "team" mentality is even more severe today.

      Whats even more frustrating is that despite there being many small and big manufacturers concentrating on niche interpretations of a mobile phone, the camera first phone with proper optics and a big sensor is still not emerging.
      If we can have a gaming oriented Razr Phone....why not a photography oriented phone....Considering the reduction in sales of smaller point and shoot cameras in favour of mobile phone photography, may be Canon/Nikon/Sony can actually bring their optics expertise to the world of mobile phones.
      Or may be HMD can collaborate with Zeiss and Sony to bring out a spiritual successor to the Lumia 1020 with the new Nokia brand.

    I just finally upgraded from my 6-7 year-old Nokia Lumia 1020 yesterday, had an Otterbox case on it from the day of purchase and my screen is still mint, although the same can't be said for the body itself and the Zeiss lens. Hoping my new LG V60 ThinQ lasts just as long, but I have my doubts. Spot on Juan! Spot effn on!
    I keep going back to the 1020 in my mind! it really was ahead of it's time, comparing that to today's gen phones is like comparing a Phase One to a FF DSLR. That Mate 10 overexposes too much, 1/3 to a 2/3 stop in some cases. If only, eh? if only they weren't so obsessed over slimness. I'm a photographer, the Lumia 1020 always come with me, got a good battery grip for it so it's easier to hold, i bought it back in 2014, the black version, best phone i ever had and i still use it and will continue to use it, being used to high end camera's i'm very pleased with how it's back camera performs, it's OS and overall usability is excellent, so is the battery life, unlike the modern smartphones which are usually oversized, ultra thin and fragile with poor battery life and clunky OS's and poor camera performance and lastly today's phones are insanely expensive.

    • @ES-qy2ju
      @ES-qy2ju 7 лет назад +6

      Quoutub We all know how HDR works
      But anyway its software, you can make that effect in Photoshop or Lightroom using several shots, that doesn't make the hardware better is an illusion, a fast solution but limited at the same time.
      HDR + is not real dynamic range, it is a postprocess, That is why the images taken in this mode have Halos in the high contrast areas, oversharpening and excesive microcontrast.
      This does not happen in cameras with true wide dynamic range, where the images look much more natural and less artificial.

    • @llennoco
      @llennoco 7 лет назад +1

      Emmanuel Santos it's true it is a composite rather than natural dynamic range but it still increases dynamic range. It is however much better than no processing when it comes to the sensor size and performance in phones. Sure if you have a massive sensor with better dynamic range that would be better even if it had the same range. However, phones are small so what can you expect? The lumia is push the limits of most people's tolerance of a fat phone. If you want a big sensor, by a DSLR.

I still use a 1020 today, my current one came from a bunch of broken phones I bought and cost me $8.50. In some ways I prefer Windows Phone 8.1 to Windows 10 Mobile. Hey Juan!
    Do you still think there'd be an audience that would want that larger sensor size, like the photography/videography enthusiast market? Or has lens quality and software processing advanced so much that it'd be unnecessary? If there is, which company would you bet would put out that experimental revisit of a 2/3" sensor design?

    • @SomeGadgetGuy
      @SomeGadgetGuy  7 лет назад +6

      +Kyle K unfortunately I don't think it'd be a very big market. Most folks are fine with the smaller sensor fare offered today, and likely wouldn't value the benefits enough to warrant the additional cost.
      If any company could, it might be Sony or Panasonic. Samsung was rumored to be working on a 2/3" sensor, but recent isocell rumors point to them going smaller instead.

    That phone could record up to 240fps, but i often used just 120 because the resolution was decreased, it was January 2011 and i was shooting slow motion with my friends at the pool haha.

      @@Vadimbeldij pixel? They use software to make photo good not because of camera lens.

    The 1020 xenon flash was so great. Also it had a manual exposure mode and an awesome handgrip. Overall lovely phone.

    As an ex-owner of a shockingly yellow 1020 and now a more than satisfied Mate 10 Pro owner, I found this video EPIC, almost a sentimental thing. The old dude still gives great results. Ode to the old king.

      Eh, judging from the Nokia 8 which I got, kinda wished HMD worked on the stock camera software more. Getting way better results, when it comes to the bokeh thing and colors with the modded Pixel cam software than the Nokia one. Great hardware, let down a tad by the camera software.

      That would be great! But remember it's not just about high-megapixel counts. There is a lot more in the Lumia 1020 why it's still one of the best camera phones out there, and it's turning into a legend.

      That would be great!
      but it seems that HMD is just using Nokia's name and some of its tech or ideas to sell but not really developing the best phones the way it did before.. 😥

    Brilliant video man, and yes it's sad that we don't get cameras like on the 1020. Imagine how stunning the pictures would be with a sensor like that and the power we have now.

      Fingers crossed we see a few more larger sensor experiments...

    I still use and own a 1020 and CANNOT find ANY smartphone to come after this in term of raw photo quality (sharpness, details, resolution, light fidelity) without all these shitty hdr enhancements they make nowadays.
    Help !

      JuanBagnell the camera and its features kept me going. Flash and HDR adjustment was so freaking good! I don't care what your creepy tunnel photo show, my night time San Francisco photos rock! :D

    Holy Lord that first baseball shot off the 1020 actually made me gasp! Thing of beauty, that, I'd almost get one just to use as a camera.
