    Next time you review this can you not dismiss the idea of using it for drawing? In one review I remember Linus saying something along the lines of "Content creators are just going to go with Wacom," not understanding that the entire reason artist look at stuff like this is Wacom has a monopoly and overcharges for every single product they have.

      But, when you invest in Wacom products you get the support and the community most manufactures don't or can't supply to there consumers. I'm personally glad that Wacom has this much competition now as no one company should overtake a niche. But as it stands, Wacom's customer service, quality control, and community interactions are always top noch!

      if they include it it will still be just as expensive, whats your point?

    • @kornkernel2232
      @kornkernel2232 7 лет назад +7

      I would understand to not include the keyboard (though still silly when they heavily trying to market it as a laptop replacement), but not having a pen included for free makes it just another tablet that don't have one out-of-the-box.
      IMO, tablet should have at least a pen these days. Tablet form-factor are just really suited for it, not just for consumption especially large tablets such as Surface Pro. These large tablets are not that ideal for casual everyday consumption, even iPad Pro which is thinner and lighter is still bulky just for that. Large tablets are really meant for productivity.

    I bought the iPad Pro 12.9" specifically to use Sketchbook Pro only to find that perspective tools and other features aren't available on iPad no matter how much money i pay. I had to pay an extra $100.00 for the apple pencil. I don't know if this is as expensive as an iPad pro 12.9" but I do know that if full programs are a must in your Sketchbook Pro I find my old Surface Pro 1 (yes the first one) will have more features than the iPad Pro because it's a full program not a little restricted app.

    The only thing that kills this for me is the lack of at least 2 USB-C ports (and by extension USB-C rapid charging). The inclusion of LTE is nice.

    • @eduardocortez476
      @eduardocortez476 7 лет назад +3

      I agree, that and the fact that Microsoft still hasn't caught on to the idea of including the keyboard and pen (Y'know, the parts that make this product worth buying?!)

    • @N3xtStopHell
      @N3xtStopHell 7 лет назад +3

      Eduardo Cortez They did include the pen for the Surface Pro 4, but Microsoft realized only 20% of Surface users actually use the pen, so instead of forcing people to buy a surface and forced to pay extra for a pen, they decided to sell it separately. Same with the keyboard. People would complain that they're forced to buy a certain keyboard. What if you had a Surface pro 3 but want a pro 4 keyboard? You wouldn't be able to unless they sold it separately like they do now.

    • @kinvit
      @kinvit 7 лет назад +2

      @Ryan Cavitt There are many USB-C cables not capable of charging. When user don't realize this, who would he blame: cable or Surface? Definitely not cable :) USB-C is the one who should mature first, before it will be included into Surface.

    • @antikommunistischaktion
      @antikommunistischaktion 7 лет назад +1

      Vitaliy K, actually they will as cheaper cables most likely will invoke a warning that it's not a good cable. USB-C is capable of this and if MS doesn't implement it that's their screw up.

    •  7 лет назад +2

      Vitaliy K. or the power supply at the end of the cable.
      Type-C needs to mature a lot before it can spread.

    You can't complain about not having USB-C being dated and then say that not having regular SD, but rather microSD, also being dated.
    Almost any SD card that you buy is a microSD card with a regular SD card adapter, having a regular SD port sounds more dated since that form factor is much older.
    MicroSD comes in sizes up-to 256GB (that's the highest I could find) and I couldn't find any regular SD cards that had higher capacity.

      The problem is that USB-C is such a better, faster, and simpler standard that new devices should be looking to phase out USB-A entirely so we can all have fast and simple connections.

    • @eclmist
      @eclmist 7 лет назад +28

      It doesn't matter if you don't actually own USB-C devices to use with it. When it becomes the norm in a few years time, there's also going to be 2-3 more iterations of this device by then. I'd rather have a USB-A port that I can use now, than a USB-C port that I can only use in 2-3 years time.

      I have an Acer Switch 12 at home and a Surface at work. I love the pen on the Surface, but I'd never buy it after having USB-C. For $35, I have a USB-C dock which I can easily plug in a monitor, mouse, Ethernet, keyboard, etc. I can use the same $35 dock with my phone. At work, $250 dock needed for the surface and no way we keep multiples around. I can also power the device through USB-C with a battery pack. No non-plug option with the Surface. USB-C is simply more flexible.

    As a surface 3 user (super base model) in daily life, I was impressed enough with it as a portable media and homework machine to supplement my desktop that I wound up buying the I5/4GB/128gb (the jump to the 8gb/256 was just not in the cards, though I'm not unhappy at all with this model in any way) new surface pro. The quirks that mattered to me were the goofy micro usb charger on the 3 being really sensitive and sometimes not recognizing itself and I wanted a little more speed for games (I was happy playing diablo 2, FTL, and other old games) but the new pro 5 actually can play most older games. It obviously isn't going to do a ton, but low settings, skyrim runs at 45-60fps. That's amazing. I was so happy with it, I sold my massive Lenovo Y510P with SLI 755m's because of the insane utility of this thing. We use it in bed for watching movies, the form factor is so small in my very space-confined backpack, and it's easy to prop up in my ambulance for watching media while I'm on duty (something no laptop can do)
    I also never run into throttling issues with powerpoint or basic photoshop. I'm NOT a power user on this device, but that's what the more expensive model is for. as an everyday portable device that games a bit (new powerful stuff at home, portable stuff like FTL, hearthstone, some skyrim on the go) and uses it a lot as a media device while doing homework, I'm just blown away by the device for under $900.

      could someone explain why USB-C or thunderbolt is so important?
      USB-C on a phone side is a different story and devices like those which have it, don't need a laptop to have USB-C since they'll still use USB A to charge from etc.
      and also things like flash drives and hardrives also use USB A.
      I have the surface pro 3 which is compatible with everything I have, so what would those ports be needed for?

    • @joesterling4299
      @joesterling4299 7 лет назад +8

      Yeah, that's what I was going to ask. What the hell is wrong with sporting the tried-and-true USB standard port? It's backward compatible with previous versions of, and has no issues at all. I don't have to go buy cables with those rounded ends.
      I think the whole USB-C push is just change for its own sake. Thunderbolt--fine. That's a whole 'nother kettle of fish. Just leave USB compatible and alone on PCs. The Surface and PCs in general are not frigging phones.

    How can Microsoft still not include the keyboard at least, this is not an iPad. They call it a laptop now as well lol. Microsoft is doing such odd things now, they even made a normal laptop under the Surface Brand, when all along the Surface brand was to be touchscreen tablets. Then now they don't even have one USB C/ Thunderbolt, this Surface Pro is a big miss for them, I also know tons of people that bought the early Surface Pro's and now just switched to a normal laptop, these things I don't think have a good replacement cycle.

USB 3.1 Gen 2 is what has the extra bandwidth, it's not actually usable for any flashdrive or external HDD, and external SSDs won't see much difference (they're also highly likely to be running slower than USB 3.0 when you run a SATA III to USB adapter, as nearly all external SSDs do).

    Panay already said the reason they didn't include USB-C was because most people would use it for charging only which is a moot reason to go the extra mile to include it.
    And then there's also the risk of people going into Holydays with the wrong ( underpowered ) USB-C charger from another device and then suddenly realizing why their Surface isn't charging properly.
    So in order to prevent such issues they decided to stick with the proprietary design they still use as of now as it would guarantee that you'd have to bring the right charger with you.

    I am actually a little okay with them not bundling it. The reason they give is that people should be able to customize it to their use case, they can make the actual hardware cheaper by not bundling it, and if people decide they need the pen, or the mouse, or the keyboard (remember it's also a tablet) or the stylus they can get those after.
    It does tend to make everything slightly higher quality.
    Plus, backwards comparability means a lot of the pro 3 upgrades won't need some of that stuff.

    I tried every fix under the sun the Microsoft Support threw at me during our multiple calls, including a complete system recovery. Nothing has worked. I've begged them to help me get a replacement for the past three calls. They keep saying 'one last step' to try...

    Wonder what last step they might have for me before warranty runs out.

    I've been waiting for the Surface Pro 5, or "Pro" now, to replace my Macbook Pro for months. The Surface Laptop looked like a great replacement, until I annoyingly discovered it had no USB-C / Thunderbolt 3 (the prototypes had TWO USB-C ports). Once again, I find myself annoyed and making the same statement about the Surface Pro - an excellent device with a huge disappointment (there's a headline). The lack of USB-C on almost any device in 2017 is ridiculous, and in the case of phones, tablets, 2in1s and laptops, has become unjustifiable. The 'new' Surface Pro is no exception, especially during the middle of the tech industry's transition to USB-C. The new 2017 HP Spectre X2, a Surface Pro 4 inspired 2in1, has TWO USB-C 3.1 ports (Gen-1 though, but still). Mind you, the X2s battery life doesn't come close to the Surface Pro.

    I suspect they've painted themselves into a corner regarding IO because of the Skype Room System dock. Changing the IO immediately forces a revision of the dock (which itself is only a few months old) and there wasn't room to also add USBC or Thunderbolt without moving the other ports.

  • @kowhoojaide6285

    lol Microsoft is moving backwards... SP4 included the pen and keyboard sold separately.... Now New Surface Pro the pen and keyboard are sold separately... Next year the Pen, Keybord and Battery will be sold separately lol. Also Microsoft need more ports, louder speakers, include (Pen and Keyboard), custom pen buttons and tilt function for the pen.

    • @Vincentmrl
      @Vincentmrl 7 лет назад +13

      Did you watch the video? First: why would they include pens and keyboards, what if you don't want them or for example have a Pro 4 or Pro 3 type cover and you don't want to buy a new one? Same for the pen but including who doesn't want it at all. If you actually informed yourself you would've known that they added better speakers, the pen now has 4096 pressure levels and it supports tilt, plus it's the pen with the least latency on the market now.

    • @piotrmazek540
      @piotrmazek540 7 лет назад +1

      In Windows 10 there is an option to set custom pen buttons.

    • @kowhoojaide6285
      @kowhoojaide6285 7 лет назад +11

      Vincentmrl First off: your first sentence is idiotic because the pen actually came with previous surface pros.... That shows that you do not own a Surface otherwise you would know that. It's funny how you don't talk about the lack of ports, battery life accuracy, or the cost of surface pro type cover/accessories because you don't own a surface otherwise you would be saying the same thing. So the new Surface Pro has better speakers... What do you mean by better? is it louder? ... where in the video does he talk about the speaker? I only said tilt because I own a surface and was looking at all the things I needed to better my SP4. I'm not sure why you don't mention the other things I said because you don't own a SP. Also yes you need a type cover because window/program tablet mode is not optimize like Ipads... When I get the new Surface I'll sell you my Pro 4 without the keyboard and pen for a cheap price that you can afford :)

    • @Vincentmrl
      @Vincentmrl 7 лет назад +6

      Uh? Excuse me but I have a Surface 3 WITH a type cover and WITH a Pro 4 pen. They shaved the price down by not including the pen as their global research shows that less than 20% of the people use it (while others just sell it on ebay). I never had problems with the ports amount and Microsoft hinted at a type c surface dock like device so that's all covered. The battery life is honestly accurate because Microsoft always states that the test is done with video playback, the battery life changes depending on your use, it's impossible to do an estimate when there's such a big usage variety. I don't know exactly what microsoft means by better speakers but apparently they're better than the Pro4's. The new pen supports tilt and has the 4096 pressure levels PLUS I just learned today that all these features will be available on all the Surfaces from the 3/Pro 3 to the new Pro (yes that includes having all the 4096 levels of pressure sensitivity and tilt) which is great. I used my S3 without the type cover and with just the pen for over a year and I didn't have any problems with it. I know having the type cover is years better though (and when I needed a keyboard I bought it).

I just think Microsoft should at leased put this port on there along with full sized 3.0 port. Now, I'm not sure about how difficult that would be or if it would be even possible. But would sure be a plus and send this device over the edge of greatness! That's all.

      True. I just think They could probably put it on there along with usb 3.0 full sized port. Just because I think they could doesn't mean it's possible. I get that. But adding 4G card, and not usb 3.1 thunderbolt? Sounds like they should be able to do this. I feel it's pretty much the same thing with very minor upgrades. Usb-C does need to mature for sure, and adding this port doesn't change that much.... But I feel it should def. be on the "new" Surface Pro. All the things you can do with just 1 USB type C and all the products coming out with that port. Makes sense too me, ya know.

    In addition to USB-C and Thunderbolt, there's no NFC so the Surface Pro can also be used as a lite mPOS (e.g. accepting payments from smart cards like #CompassCard and #八達通), for more convenient and secure online payments (instead of entering card number manually, just tap), online inquiries of transponder (e.g. #CompassCard stored value and passes inquiry, #八達通 inquiry), and more.

    I would like to think that they didn't include the keyboard and pen to push the cost down a bit for people upgrading from a previous surface device. But I'm also not seeing any surface+keyboard+pen bundles on the site, which seems like an absolute no-brainer.

    if they give it a thunderbolt 3, you can basically add an external graphic card so that u can play games with this compute

    they sure managed to mess up the line, when they reach were i live mentioning "surface pro" will mean nothing to the seller. that is exactly the kind of notebook that i need for engineering class ( i have a cube i7) but the lack of usb -c is a deal breaker. i use the pen to substitute paper because i keep losing very important papers that i spent 1+ hours making.

    So glad this came out so that the price of the surface pro 4 will drop hopefully, second hand or used

    One minor detail you missed Luke was that the last gen Surface Pen had pressure levels of 2048 (the one that came with the Surface Pro 4), other than that everything was on point. 😎

    I watched the New Surface Pro ad last night after watching Linus's review of Surface Pro 4, before that watching Scrapyard Wars S5 Episode 1

    i love how even razer no longer uses dumb naming schemes based on 'new' because of how confusing it was

    I would have wanted to hear more about drawing with it, how programs such krita, sai or photoshop works on it. And more detailed pen pressure and stroke precision testing rather than specs.

    Panos Panay, the guy mostly responsible for this devices, tried to explain why no modern I/O. Would be nice to hear about what you guys think about it.

    As a pro 4 user, I just want to know the PMW backlight problem was solved or not...
    And a good news for me, the new keyboard cover, is identical to the signature type cover I owned, and the new pen are fully compatible, even the new tilt functions (I would exactly pay for it), oh yeah I have a new surface pro!
    so...that's perfect time to buy a surface pro 4, new CPU and graphic card on a tablet? you won't care that, core i5 6300u are good enough.

    Love my Surface Pro 4! Use it for mild video production on the go. Runs RED 4K footage decent to haha.

    I think that not including the pen is fine. It's a novelty item for most people, and this allows Microsoft to make the best pen possible for artists and notetakers who actually use the pen.

    I want something that can replace notebooks. I want to be able to take notes with a pen, I want to be able to use it like a laptop, I want it to be the only thing I need to carry for class. What should I buy?

    • @oliverhancock5397

      whatby101 dell xps 15 is good, surface pros are good but not good in the lap. The surface laptop is if you just want something that you can turn on and it works and has good battery life. If you want something a bit more powerful (and costly) the surface book is good for light gaming graphic design and would meet the not taking criteria... what I would do is go to a Best Buy and try the stuff out see what you like and where you might have trouble. Also look up reviews from people who might use it in a certain way to see what they think. Good luck.

    Sounds like they improved the pen input dramatically. I hope that's the case, cause after trying the Apple pencil I couldn't go back, writing and note taking feels way more natural on the iPad

    I think that 90% of computer users don't even know what thunderbolt is, and most people don't use it, so why add the extra thickness for a thunderbolt port?

    You guys don't understand that it LITERALLY is a Surface Pro 5. They just want you to buy the SP5 sticker along with everything else sold separately.
