    • @HiDDENk00l
      @HiDDENk00l 7 лет назад +8

Ryan Zhang the reason the keyboard isn't included is because there's a bunch of different colors for the keyboard but only one for the surface itself. This makes it easier to not run out of stock and whatnot.

I've always loved the surface line up but Microsoft seems to be going down a slippery slope. No USB-C or thunderbolt is just mind boggling and their bundling options (no type cover/ pen with surface pro and windows 10S on surface laptop) is just a frustrating money grab. I think the surface line up should be the bar that microsoft sets for what a windows device should be but the lack of the latest hardware (USB-C/ Thunderbolt) is frustrating. These devices are also aimed for productivity so again why sell the surface pro without anything, no one buys it to just use it as a touch screen tablet that'd be a humongous waste. With the surface laptop why would you cripple users by defaulting the OS to be windows 10S even at the highest tier model. Such amazing devices but their marketing strategies just really puts you off from buying them.

    • @colinkiama
      @colinkiama 7 лет назад

That's the whole point, they want you to want them. The plan is to set the standard for the other hardware makers. In a few months, you are going to see computers that offer everything you want for a cheaper price than the surface pro (2015) ;)

The Surface Pro sits in a much better place than Surface Laptop. For STEM the combination of the Pen for mathematic notation writing/diagrams while note taking and full Windows Professional are what makes the Surface Laptop just another laptop that can't do those things well.

Onfe It can become a Laptop but I just don't find Windows pleasing to use as a Laptop. Most programs where not designed with touch in mind, and I have yet to find a good note taking app. Neither PDF annotator nor OneNote are really good.
On the iPad you can find GoodNotes, Notability and more. It has been around for longer. Maybe in two years people will have created good note taking apps for the Surface.

I disagree I think each device hits a different category. For those who want the "traditional Laptop" experience there's the Surface Laptop. For those who like using the Pen- artists, students, etc. The Surface Pro is a much better option. The Laptop doesn't have a good "writing experience". The Surface Pro is more those value mobility above all else.... The Surfacebook is the more premium device, whereas the Studio is the ultimate creators device. They each have their place, it just depends on what you prefer in terms of input method. If you use the pen Surface Pro and Book are your options. If you want the traditional laptop then the Surface Laptop is your thing. I prefer the Pro myself. I currently own a SURFACE 3 that I use everyday for work and it does a great job. The Surface Pro will be a great upgrade when I'm ready to purchase.

The Surface Pro has been the best option for me as an illustrator and frequent writer and note-taker.
The Laptop is awkward to write and draw on. The Studio is very expensive and not portable. And the Book is slightly more expensive, less easier to carry around, and harder to write on (with keyboard attached).
So that's who the Surface Pro line is for: an artist or writer on the go with a decent budget.

You would need to carry around your Surface charger if you wanted to charge all of your USB C devices. A normal phone charger won't be anywhere near powerful enough. It is the same situation for the Nintendo Switch. You can't use most battery banks to charge it because the Switch needs more juice.

I got the Surface Pro 5 because it was on sale & I couldn't afford the laptop version. I got it as my only other computer outside my prepaid phone, to help with my channel & give me something to watch videos & Netflix, which I do most of my time even when multi-tasking, because I'm disabled & too sick to go out much. It helps to have an escape, since I got rid of my TV 5yrs ago! I'm who it's for!

Hi I've used graphics tablets for the past 14 years. To everyone complaining about the added price of the pen, it is vastly improved upon the previous stylus. it actually rivals top end Wacom devices which is an incredible step in the right direction for people using this device for artwork. Again when it comes to the keyboard, a lot of people using this for art want something they can hold in their hands, and possibly just use a Bluetooth keyboard with. These are extras, that not everybody will need, so they don't need to come in the box.

My Surace Pro 3 was my best purchase for college. Small, compact, one note is excellent. I would keep the keyboard off and take pictures of slides, long math problems, and write all over them. When I got home I have a dock powering 2 1080p screens a keyboard and mouse. Today my surface pro 3 is still running strong with zero issues. Great purchase for students, and useful for the business man who wants portability and power.

I have a surface pro 4 and I'd have to say that these models (the tablet laptop things) are perfectly geared towards students. At school in class, I take the keyboard off and handwrite my notes with onenote, I get the handwritten note experience (also saves paper when teachers provide handouts, I can write on them in onenote) while also storing everything on my computer without carrying a ton of weight. I use the keyboard when typing obviously, but I also love to detach it and just watch youtube when I am at home. It's the best investment I've made.

It's a refresh people with Kaby Lake processor, longer battery life, better tilt mechanism and same base price as last gen. The surface pen probably had the most change with tilt support and more than 4000 points of pressure. I can understand why they didn't include the surface pen. If USB-C is not on the newer model (Pro 5?) then that's different.

Hi Austin, I have a Surface 3 (non pro) and a Surface Book. I use them for note-taking as tablets with the pen and as laptops for essay work or long reports. I use them as either for Skype, browsing and other lighter tasks depending on the situation. I have never liked laptops as flexibility is the most important thing to me, and if I want a comfortable keyboard, mouse and display in a relatively inflexible design I will always go for the greater power per £ of a desktop. If I need mobility, I want full mobility, not only when I am sat down or at a table/ desk. That is where Surface Pro and Book stand compared to the laptop, for people who value flexibility on the go.

I think what I like about the Surface line is that they've developed it into a "what's best for you?" product. If you just want a regular laptop, get a Surface Laptop. If you want a tablet that can also be your main PC, then get a Surface Pro. Need a high-end laptop that can also be a tablet on the occasion you need it? Get a Surface Book. Graphics designer who needs everything regardless of cost? Surface Studio, for you.

For students in secondary school, I would recommend the Surface Laptop as it is stylish and has Windows 10 S which prevents you from running .exe files which helps avoid getting viruses on your laptop. For students in university and college or someone just looking for a good, solid laptop, I would recommend the new Surface Pro because it doesn't come with Windows 10 S so it can run applications that you might need for your course. It has good specs and a good design.
I personally, am getting the new Surface Pro.

The tablet has more potential than you think for many people, including, but far from only creatives, architects, musicians, note takers, students and any people that can use the pen.
Its diminutive size make it a fantastic business laptop, very light and transportable in small business bag.
And yes, with the type cover you can work almost anywhere in almost every situation, which is not the case of most bigger laptops, including on coach flights.
Having worked many years with the SP3, I can attest this is an advantage you'll enjoy every day, and I took it over my (equally fantastic but in other ways) Dell XPS 15 whenever I could.
The biggest drawback is of course the total price that is very expensive (tablet+keyboard+pen), and the ports where one USB type C, at least 3.1 or thunderbolt 3, would be appreciated, including from musicians.
IMO, a new Surface tablet with a 13,5" screen would have been more interesting, as it would have offered an alternative to people needing/wanting bigger screen, while still being able to fully benefit from a pen and touch enabled device: I don't know that it will be that useable on the Surface Laptop, which, as far as I know, can't open 180¨to have the monitor flat on a table.

Geez stop whinging about the keyboard and pen not being included. Just add the cost on when you purchase. Surely that's not too difficult. The reason they have them separate is because there's a range of colours to choose from. It's not the end of the world.
Also, the improvements all round are actually quite substantial for people who want these devices - much longer battery life, much much better pen, and LTE support. A really good upgrade all round.
You really show how out of touch you are when you say that you're not sure who Surface Pro is for. Surface Pro makes up 70% of all Surface devices sold, so evidently it's still the most popular form factor.

It's a laptop. Always has been. Nobody complains that we call desktop computers computers even though they don't come with monitors. You can't use a desktop computer without a monitor, can you? Just like a desktop, the surface allows you to choose your keyboard. Already have a keyboard? Guess what..you can use it. Rather have a separate Bluetooth keyboard? Guess what, you don't have to pay for the Surface keyboard cover unless you want one. Rather use the pen and the onscreen keyboard when mobile and an ergonomic keyboard when you're at your desk. You get the idea. After 4 generations it's time to retire that old song and dance (:

The Surface line is actually really well thought out. There is not a single device from any company that is 50% laptop 50% tablet perfectly, and even if there is physically one, either side of the experience would not be ideal (because the perfect tablet experience will only exist on a device that is 100% tablet and vice versa for laptops), so it is physically and conceptually impossible to build such a device. And Microsoft, the company who invented this convertible category, recognize it.
So what they are doing is to have Surface Pro to be 70% tablet% 30 laptop and the Surface Book to be 70% laptop and 30% tablet, instead of trying to get the impossible balance as explained in the previous paragraph. The entire line up is now looking like:
    Surface Studio - Desktop
    Surface Laptop - Laptop
    Surface Pro - 70% Tablet 30% Laptop
    Surface Book - 70% Laptop 30% Tablet
The only thing missing is mobile, in the form of the tablet or a phone, or a foldable, which is what Surface Phone is supposed to be. It would not make sense to build a pure tablet in Microsoft's eyes because 1. tablet is dead (except iPad) 2. windows is not a 100% tablet os.

In the IT space a lot of my clients use the Surface Pro, it was so popular that they were sold out when they first came out and companies were running to the vendors to see if any of us had them in stock. Still popular, so if you're a home user, yes the Ipad might be a great option. But with Windows 10 Pro on the latest Surface Pro, it's all businesses need to keep their MDM locked down.

I like the ports. I don't have a single solitary USB C device or cable. I do have tons of USB A, display port. The Surface Pro imo is for folks who'd like to use the pen a lot without having to shell out for the Book. Photo editing, taking notes, drawing out stuff, designing... there's a fair amount of folks out there who like doing that and appreciate the dual functionality. The Surface Laptop seems like a better laptop by itself though.

The difference between the Surface Pro and Surface laptop is that the Pro is meant for the on the go content creator and consumer. The detachable screen makes it more portable and the kick stand makes it better for artist on the go. When comparing to the Surface Book, the Pro is all around a better tablet experience due to again, the kick stand for drawing and manipulation of on screen items as well as having better battery life so it could be used as a tablet longer. The Surface Book is for those who want a desktop experience with the ability to take it from place to place in your home or studio. The everyday user will opt for the laptop because they aren't the creators of the world, but still want a great experience and good looking laptop. The artist/drawer will go for the Pro, the engineer will go for the Book, the architect/graphic designer/film will go for the Studio and a combo of the Pro or Book.
I can clearly see whom each device is meant for because they all serve different needs.

I own a surface pro 3 and in my opinion, the only reason to get surface pro is if you need to use the pen a lot for some reason. I'm an engineering student myself, and use the surface for all my note taking. It's by no means perfect (Onenote especially has a lot of room for improvement, also the battery life sucks on surface pro 3), but I don't think there's any other one device solution that is better for both note taking and general pc use. I also find the keyboard totally satisfying. The surface pro 3 i5 model also gets a little noisy sometimes, so the passive cooled version could be nice for that reason. I hope it doesn't throttle much though. Have to see some reviews to decide weather it's worth the upgrade though.
