  • 1995 BMW M3 auto to manual swap, short overview
    Check out www.bmwe36life.com for some more photos and explanations.
    Here's a quick rundown of the parts that I bought new when I swapped everything for this project
    -flex disc
    -center support bearing
    -new LTW 14.6lb FX flywheel
    -oem sachs clutch
    -oem sachs pressure plate w/pilot bearing and oem sachs throw out bearing
    -metal clutch pivot pin
    -UUC stainless line intended for z3 (eliminates small bracket on trans and screws directly into slave cylinder)
    -new hose from brake reservoir to master cylinder
    -ECS shifter rebuild kit
    -Delrin clutch pedal bushing
    -OEM pressure plate bolts
    -Slave cylinder
    -For trans: new input shaft seal, output shaft seal, selector rod seal, shift pin service, shift detent service for 5th and reverse
    -Bolts and nuts for flex disc
    -Copper nuts for exhaust
    -Gaskets for exhaust
    -Trans mounts
    It's also a good idea to have a decent torque wrench, and a paint marker. Torque things down, use a paint marker to dab on the nut/where it seals so you can inspect it some miles later to see if anything is coming loose.
    Sorry I said "Umm" alot - I'll work on that!

    you should take that Insulation out before it fails/crumbles

    • @krohn27
      @krohn27  7 лет назад +2

      Thanks, I thought about that but wasn't sure how necessary it was. After about 1000 miles or so, I'll get under the car to inspect my work and make sure everything is doing okay under there. I may tear that out and use some dynomat/or something equivalent in nature for heat and sound insulation.

      Thank you I appreciate it! This whole thing took me about month. I worked on the project on and off while I ordered small parts, etc. I would say don't attempt it unless you A.) are prepared to spend more than you intend to by at least a few hundred dollars. B.) Have another car as a daily driver, that way there isn't pressure to hurry anything. C.) Have patience. There's no doubt you'll run into frustrating things along the way, stuff might be seized up, you'll need to order things you hadn't planned on etc. If you go into the project knowing that you will learn, take the time to do everything properly, and budget accordingly, it's a fun swap. I would say on the difficulty scale, it's a 7. Not because it's extremely difficult, but there is a lot of grunt work, you are on your back a lot, and just the sheer thought of doing it all frankly can get overwhelming. That being said, these cars aren't super difficult to work on and are pretty simple. If you have a friend to help along the way...that's a huge plus. It also took me a little longer because I had to take everything out of a donor car, then everything out of my car. I also did the shift pin/detent service on the transmission as well (and that took a couple nights of tinkering). If you have the room, and can swing buying a donor car for a good price, I suggest it. You learn how to take all of it apart, and it helps envision how it all goes back together in your vehicle. I'm going to write a more extensive D.I.Y at some point, i'm not sure where, or when. But I'll link it in the comment when I do it! Thanks!

    Nice video. Loosen the motor mount. Dont take them off but it allows the engine to be moved to gain access to the bolts on the bell housing. You can lift the front of the engine from above. Watch out for fan clearance if you still have one in there.

    • @krohn27
      @krohn27  7 лет назад

      Thanks! If you look at my long comment where I replied to user "GimM3datbeckett" I went over a few things. About the stainless clutch line. You can use the stainless/braided clutch line intended for a Z3, which allows you get rid of a bracket/hardline that goes into the slave cylinder. Basically it just simplifies the process, you'll understand exactly what I'm talking about if you take a look at a ZF trans under a car. I used several links in the official to auto to manual swap thread on bimmerforums. For re-assembly, since I've never done any of this before, I followed this video, which was amazingly detailed. I'm actually going to work on a blog or something for this swap so I can document it all in one place for people with questions.

    • @krohn27
      @krohn27  7 лет назад

      Hello, I didn't put the auto back in the donor car. The donor car had some pretty bad rust and it ended up getting parted out. I tried for several months to basically give that trans away and eventually scrapped it. Nobody wanted it!

    I've been agonizing over buying manual swap parts for my 1995 M3 (Avus Blue as well) Did you replace any of the existing parts from the 328is? Clutch, flywheel, etc. If not, how are they holding up despite being from the 328is rather than the m3? I plan on attempting this swap as soon as this coming semester is over.
    P.S. Your car is phenomenal condition and my jealousy is making me wanna hate you for it. :)

    • @krohn27
      @krohn27  7 лет назад +1

      Hey there, I updated my description with a list of parts I bought new for the swap. I'm sure I'm forgetting a few things, but that's off the top of my head. I would go ahead and just get a new clutch/pressure plate/flywheel if you are doing this swap honestly. Getting the trans out isn't a small task, so if you can swing it, it's nice to know you are starting fresh with new stuff. Keep me updated when you start the swap, I can help as much as I can.

    Great video! I have a 1997 M3 E36 sedan with the auto to manual swap (done by previous owner). How do you get the backup lights to come on when you go into reverse? The previous owner left the slider switch from the auto under the gear shifter shroud so I’ve confirmed all the electrical works.

    • @krohn27
      @krohn27  6 лет назад

      I remember it being sort of a pain, but just unbolt it from the trans, then obviously undo it from the cooler, I then remember bending it in a way I was able to shimmy it out. You aren't going to use it again more than likely, so if you have a cut off wheel, hack it off and throw it away!
