    Alex, I can totally feel you. I'm using as a daily '00 Audi TT 1.8T quattro, and not a single day I've owned it (exactly 11 months now) it has been working properly. At the moment I also have loose wheel bearing at right front wheel, snapped coil spring on left side, some whining from the gearbox/powertrain, broken level motor on right headlamp, loose drivers side window, broken seat heater on drivers seat, warped brake discs at front... and those are just few to mention. I've already replaced the clutch and dual mass flywheel with all the bits, ignition coils and spark plugs, blower motor, fixed gauge cluster etc... It has been so stressful and heavy for my wallet to keep it going, yet I still have hope that some day it will be finally in good nick. :) Well, it also should have been when I bought it, but after a while it turned out that it wasn't. :/

    In a years time I've tracked over 30,000 miles in my E46. Only times it's been down was due to a failed seal in my brake caliper and a failed fuel pump. Both happened at home fortunately. I would drive it anywhere the way it sits though I haven't neglected nor ignored anything so it's very reliable. I actually have a 1996 "reliable" 3.4 4runner in the shop getting its engine replaced at only 123k miles. It sat for a long time but still!!

    You know components wear out, I have an M3 E36 with over 100,000 mikes on it, solid as can be, I changed all the wheel bearings at around 100,000 miles and now they should be good for another 100k miles. Alternators, fuel sending units, master cylinders,ect. Will wear out. I don't know what your expecting from a 15-20 year old car. If I were you I would change out all the fluids, transmission, brake, power steering ect. They will help the components last longer. Just imagine it's a 50 year old classic 507 or something and you'll see it with new eyes.

    I drove my e46 m3 from Belgium to Romania, last year, which is about 1300 miles ride. I've achieved a litle over 30 mpg, cruising at 80 miles an hour( with speeding around the autobahn, trying to get it to the top speed and all, lol). It was back breaking, but I had a lot of fun as well. The car did'nt have any issues at all, which why is "superior" over the e36 m3. Lol.

    Bought a 29 year old Volvo 240 this spring. Replaced a brake caliper. Took it for a 2000km journey from Sweden to Germany (and back). Paid 2500 SEK for it, about 210 GBP. That was cheaper than than a one way journey with the ferry to Germany. Did 160kph (100mph) nicely on the autobahn. No signs of giving up.

    I drove back from Germany this Sunday after a long drive to the Nurburgring for the weekend, in my 2000 330ci with 173,000 miles on the clock. Sadly, during my time out there the power steering pump failed, so I drove it all the way from Germany to the Calais then 130 miles to my buddy's garage with no fluid whatsoever! I was stopping regularly and putting drops of engine oil in the reservoir to lubricate the bearings, lol. Other than that the car handled the epic drive and being thrashed round the ring, 155mph on the autobahn and driven 400 plus miles home, with no power steering fluid, lol! I feel you pain Alex. I love my car too much but every time I fix something, you guessed it, something else goes wrong. I guess it's all part of the ownership of an old high-performance German automobile, eh!

      Checking the car is just part of reguar maintenance. The thing that sucks on all performance cars is that young people don't have a clue how and what to service on them. they also usually can't afford much more than a cheap oil change and those cars were seriously neglected their entire life. Unfortunately when a guy with fair intentions and willing to care for it comes around, it's usually too late for the car. The good guy then gets to pay all of the sins that were done by the previous 10 boy racers and can easily spend another car worth of money on fixing it. (Engine work is expensive as hell and unless you are a prof. mechanic and have your own workshop,you can't do it yourself).
      I hope i save someone a bankruptcy because of buying an old performance car by thinking it will be cheap fun.
      Believe me I'm talking from experience with a few old sports cars
      Alex gets sponsored well, so he can pay no problem and by the amount of subs he has I bet he also owns a lot of new and good cars, but for the sake of the series and to stay dear and equal to us he only really shows Phill and Collins, which is ok to me btw.

    Hi Guys, enjoyed the vid as always and a great test/challenge. I think you may have under estimated the effect on mpg of the roof rack. I live in France but still buy most of my cars in England and once I bought a Disco TD5 auto with full length roofie. With the roof rack in place at 120 kph 26 mpg, with it taken off, broken down and put in the boot 35 mpg. Roof racks are killers for mpg.

    Agree mostly with your comment on bmw engines. Biggest exception I know is the 2.0 diesels up to around 2013, timing chain would break at as little as 30k miles and eat anything in its path as it breaks. Very expensive fix. I was going for a 123d but decided to go with a 3 series with the trusty 3.0 diesel instead 😊 plus everything I was looking at I was going to remap straight away, so I thought I’d start off at that power instead 😉

    • @Lolzilol123
      @Lolzilol123 8 лет назад +6

      It is quite common for cruise control (at least in older cars, I have no experience with 2010+) to use more fuel than a real driver. The cruise control doesn't know what's coming up, so it will constantly be "surprised" if there are any gradient changes (a hill or a slope) and will be slower to react than a driver who can see what is coming. In my father's 2005 Toyota Previa the cruise control will, in a hilly area, smash the throttle and let it go a whole SECOND after gradient changes. On a motorway I assume the same will be true of the E36 when there's a slight headwind or tailwind - the car will be slow to react and thus have to "over-correct" because the speed has either picked up or fallen too much.

    • @jantsucca5904
      @jantsucca5904 8 лет назад +2

      Cruise control tries to always keep the same speed, so it for example accelerates uphill, instead of accelerating a little bit before the hill which consumes much less fuel.

    • @gautier998
      @gautier998 8 лет назад +3

      Major feature of cruise control is not being tired af on long trip constantly adjusting speed, not really fuel consumption in effect :)

    • @wobblysauce
      @wobblysauce 8 лет назад

      Older Cruise control was more like.. Set a speed and that was it.. and it would try to be on the speed at all times.
      Modern Cruise control is more like.. Set a speed and then it trys to stay in a window of that, with no hard acceleration say as now you got some gusty wind.
