I bought an m3 in 2008. fucking thing died on my way home from the place I bought it. the main things were: vanos leaking oil, as well as the whole engine, air filter had probably never been changed, holes in the exhaust system, the carbon fiber air intake was broken and leaked, the car had also been crashed at some point. I payed about 5-6000 pounds roughly calculated. sold it for about 2000 6 months later. drove about 900 kms one way to buy that car, and I was in the middle of a cancer treatment. too bad the guy who sold it totally fucked me. so don't feel too bad about yours! I drive an impreza today and am fully recovered from both the m3 and the cancer.
Really sorry to see that it went so poorly for you man! I think you just happened to get a terrible "base" car. No matter what, if you are buying a 13+ year old car it's going to need a few things changed. My total cost for my 2003 BMW 325i? Less than $5,000 and it runs stellar (bought for $2,500; $2,500 in parts). Furthermore, in essence it is mechanically brand new. In the end it is a great value, but ONLY if you can work on it yourself.
This is a 20 year old normally used car. Yes the previous MOT was performed by Stevie Wonder. But its not bad for its age. If you can't handle corrosion, worn out suspension components and stuff battered then you are buying the wrong era car for the wrong money. I'm sure there are some quite nice ones about for £25,000.
@jermaineotoole3668 £35k would get you a really nice low mileage car. But trying to find a good car in a rare colour is like finding hen's teeth in rocking horse poo.
+boy638 I think he said in the video that the car had "passed" a similar inspection before in "December." So either it was not a good mechanic checking it out or something fishy was happening.

If you pick secondhand cars, make sure you check for any major problems. If there is any, walk away. You need to have basic knowledge of secondhand car problems factoring in labour costs if you need any repairs :D
+Khairul Izwan just make sure nothing is wrong with the engine, walk away from ANY car with an engine management light. If you're oil is going down or a lot of white smoke is coming out of the exhaust, most likely the head gasket is gone and labour for a head gasket replacement is around £200-400. +glazuna So that's almost $10,000 usd for an M3 with 150,000 miles. That is pretty absurd by any logical persons standards. ''Well the outside looks good.'' No you didn't screw up... You bought a Beemer that needs you. Give it what it needs. If that's not for you, well, a Kia comes with a good warranty doesn't it...
@@herbienbrian2 eh; sums it up. If your going buy any type of older "classic"; its going be a money pit; your doing pretty good if its worth half of what you invested into it. More of pure passion of bringing a classic back to life.
Kind of late, but wish u knew how people buy cars in uk... Both times my parents were selling their cars, the buyer checked out the outside of the car in 2 mins, inside for 2 mins, asked for short test drive around car park and said he is buying it, everytime my parents buy a car, they spend like 30-50 mins checking every single thing, the sellers look at them like they looking at weirdos
Not really a lemon at all... For a 20 year old, 5 owner performance car it's pretty good. The rust is really the worst part... All of the other things are common E36 wear and tear that's been neglected by previous owners. I totally agree you over paid but it's it pretty good shape overall.
If you own a 10 year old+ BMW, it leaks oil. Just one of those facts of life. Generally, unless you're capable of doing all the work, it's not worth fixing. Starts with valve cover, then oil pan gasket, oil filter housing, and finally, timing cover. Unless you ave the time, tools and expertise to replace the timing cover gasket, don't fix any of the others unless it's major.
yeah not a proper m3 driver move right there. He doesn't use the stuff that he teaches his students in the lectures of how to become a proper BMW driver! Very disappointing... Not to mention he didn't bring his Bluetooth headset, his reflective sunglasses and his naturally colored tie!
4 years later after me watching this when it first came out with no driving licences being 16. I now own a E36 328i 🤣 AYYYYYYY and its got rust but. Fixing it dw :)
ProCityGaming Sway bar does nothing to affect 0-100 times. All it does is add stiffness to the front suspension, and make it more firm. any car can go in a straight line without a sway bar..
@@fueledgti One of the mounts is broken, so the sway bar is completly useless to start with that. A sway bar makes the suspension travel a lot more smoothly with no sudden trasitions of weight, on acceleration a sway bar can help maintain suspention geometry at its tuned levels and if that does not happen tyre wear is the tip of the iceberg. To be more specific, go and watch how the new m3's launch, they tend to sway in one side more than the other and the antiroll-bars help to first eliminate it and second to control it, if you dont have that control, one wheel will tend to have less grip than the other because the weight bounches verticaly and horizontaly and dramaticly change the load that each spring has, so the best way to emagine it is as your suspension works like a worn out rubber bushing, it goes all over the place. Grip is lost so fun and feeling of the car are gone out the window so yeah, good stuff xD.
Karnige Vlogs totally agree! People called me crazy for buying mine because it had some miles on it, and it was actively on fire when I bought it, but I got a decent deal! Plus, I have a sweet spoiler to put on it once it stops smoldering
My e36 has 405,000 miles and still running. I've beat the f out the car chipped the ECU only and suspension changed. No rust problems to bits and parts falling off or breaking. Yeah the horse power lacked before but it real won't die. Lol Best 3 I ever bought
honestly most of those issues are pretty damn common on older performance cars,. not to mention you cant expect everyone to take perfect care of it. this is why you always make the seller give you an up to date inspection. shop smart
A very nit picky inspection. This is an older vehicle. They don't stay perfect forever regardless if you want them to or not. Even if he had paid 4x the price for a "perfect" example there would have been something on the list that needed to be repaired. Cars are complex machines. They are hard enough to make perfect out of the factory. Add a few years of age to a vehicle and that "perfect" target becomes more and more expensive to maintain. While there were a few things that needed attention on the list it would have been very easy to fix many of the things on that list without breaking the bank.
On the strength of this video, I used Munich Legends for a pre-purchase inspection of my 2011 BMW M3. They inspected it thoroughly, produced a report, and I got the dealer I was buying the car from to sort out the couple of issues (non-cosmetic) found which was 1 tyre to be replaced and rear brake discs and pads to be replaced. Since I bought the car, it's been sweet as a nut! Clearly they did a good job on the pre-purchase inspection. Happy days! :)
Lol you don't think all that rust is an issue? That's a powerful engine to have on a rusty chassis. I'd be worried about the arse falling out of it haha
Lol I don't give a shit what the government says so that's not why is be worried. The car might not fall apart driving down the road but in an accident it might disintegrate. That's what would worry me and being a Mom, I have to think of little ones in the car with me ;)
Blake Belladonna It's true that the MOT will pass if the car is safe for other road users and the environment, but Alex said it passed with no advisories which most of the stuff listed should have been.
It wouldn’t have passed an MOT ... it’s clearly a dodgy one ... you know ... send a large amount of money by post (don’t forget your reg plate) and in return you get a clear MOT
My question is this. Why didnt you get this test done on the car before you bought it. In canada where I live the owners that are selling their cars on craigslist or wherever are completely fine with you meeting up at a shop and getting a full inspection done (at the buyers expense)... Seems like you kinda screwed yourself over, and you could have avoided spending over 10k pounds on a +16 year old car.
+Gregory Wills yeah it was a great video, but it seems like a guy with this amount of knowledge on cars should be able to know that he should get it inspected before he buys
I know I'm late to the party, but I wanted to point out that he's talking about British Pounds Sterling, not Dollars. 3500£ is a lot for a car he paid 6900£ for...
Erik Malkavian what? Any cars bought from private sellers are ‘sold as seen’ the only way you could get any form of money back from a private seller is if they lied in response to a direct question and even then you’d struggle to prove an average person would know enough to back the answer up
Pro tip for the States folks: you can request to see the techs go over your car and (legally in most states) they have to comply, if not you can dispute it afterwards. Had this experience myself.
Here's how to enjoy a bmw. Lease or buy bmw with all or partial warranty remaining. If bought, sell at end of warranty. One thing I've learned about boats and bmw's. An old one with repairs costs the same as a new one with payments. A never ending nightmare of repairs and parts that are expensive as hell.
+Fotios Tsingos I have a friend with a 633 csi. Inherited it from his dad. Has fairly low miles. Is in the garage being ''repaired'' every other month. The car will probably never run properly. Classic old bmw story. They're just not worth it.
Just dont store it outside, make sure seals are in good condition, have a proper undercoating under the car and if you can avoid driving it in the winter because of salt. The main reason for a buying a winter beater. And don't live in britain.
+JohnDark93 Pre-purchase inspections are usually under $100, which is nearly nothing compared to the issues they can turn up.. Most shops charge a fairly low rate for them because they're hoping you'll have them perform the repairs they deem necessary. Short of the VANOS test, anyone with 2 eyes and a lift could have inspected that car and told him not to buy it.
+Maxwelhse and after a lot of inspections you still dont have a car because its an old car. The most expensive repair is the vanos and als the mechanic explained almost Every BMW has problems with it and you can drive it without problems. he could also just buy An m3 at this garage and be sure there are no problems, but looking at the website and prices i'm guessing that you cant buy a similar car there for the same ammount.
This is ridiculous! It's not a lemon, it is a 12 plus year old car, this mechanic is getting paid to note down evry bit of rust etc. Any car this age would have all this and more even if it has hardly been driven, You would be lucky that it doesn't need a gear box or engine rebuild, A car this age would need a full respray to look it's best anyway. Stuff can start to rust within two years if it gets any type of scrape or damage.
I have a 33 year old MR2 with less rust, and miles. Still on the original engine and transmission. Yeah metal naturally rusts, but if taken care of, it doesn't. The paint is original in amazing condition. The suspension is fucked, but i didn't care when i bought it. The difference between my car and this car. Mine is a Toyota, this is a BMW. My parts are cheap compared to this thing. The reason it's a lemon, and my car isn't is because he is paying more in repairs than my car is worth. As you saw 3500 in repairs. He paid 6000 for it. That is in fact a lemon. He's paying more than half of what he paid for, and he paid more money then he should have.
Had a couple of 10+ year old cars, certainly not anything close to that state, you could sit in the back without fear of putting your foot through the floor. I wonder what the service book was like for it, but with a personalised plate like that it's probably blank.
£3500 to repair simple jobs that any competent DIYer could fix. The more I see of this guy, the more I'm reminded of Snowflakes. Remarkable that he needs someone to tell him lights not working, water in the boot and oil leaks. He seems to be the Stevie Wonder of motoring, but without the musical ability.
Bullshit title. That's not a lemon at all. You bought an old, driven, used car. It's not a brand-new showroom car. You could drive that car for a long time with the problems it has; it's not going to blow up because the diff has a tiny leak. IT'S OLD. That's also expected stuff on an M3. That car is in great shape for it's age. Of course a car that old is not going to be perfect. The rust can be patched or left; you have to expect rust on most cars unless they're garage queens. The oil leak is typical. Leaks are expected on BMWs; they all do that. After being on the road that long, things are going to be not perfect on it. Some things are going to have some play, and there is going to be a leak here and there on a BMW. There may be a clunk or a squeak here or there. None of these things make a car a lemon; that makes a car a car. If that's an issue just don't buy used cars. What type of car people are you? Are you expecting the steering wheel to be as tight as it was on day one? Of course not! That's nothing really even wrong; that's just using the steering wheel and it gets play over time.
Lmao "It's 13 years old so who cares if it's a piece of shit" My parents own three 20 year old Toyota's ( '96 RAV4, '95 Land Cruiser Prado and '97 Camry) which have had not a single problem except for regular maintenance.

Ach du Scheiße basically means oh shit.
No you didn't screw up... You bought a Beemer that needs you. Give it what it needs. If that's not for you, well, a Kia comes with a good warranty doesn't it...
Well fvcking said!!
Ok now I feel slightly better about my e36. I'm 7k into mine and it's getting a little depressing.
@@herbienbrian2 eh; sums it up. If your going buy any type of older "classic"; its going be a money pit; your doing pretty good if its worth half of what you invested into it.
More of pure passion of bringing a classic back to life.
@@Aerogrow I made it go pretty sideways tonight with some water coming onto the BLVD and I suddenly remember why I spent so much lol.
I love to think that when buying a used car, that it wants a safe place where the owner treats it right, i know i certainly treat then well

All the justification I ever need when buying car parts >:D

Nice excuse for being lazy
That’s quality 😂
Well... you COULD race your house if you put it on four wheels 😂😂😂
Imagine how much torgue and horse power it would take to move an entire house.
You bought a car without even looking underneath it? WTF?!
School boy error!
Who does that
You know the saying “Fools rush in” lol
I bought one without checking anything and its been good 2 me
Kind of late, but wish u knew how people buy cars in uk...
God damn *RUST*

If you own a 10 year old+ BMW, it leaks oil. Just one of those facts of life. Generally, unless you're capable of doing all the work, it's not worth fixing. Starts with valve cover, then oil pan gasket, oil filter housing, and finally, timing cover. Unless you ave the time, tools and expertise to replace the timing cover gasket, don't fix any of the others unless it's major.
Thank you for naming the car after me. I feel amazing that somewhere in the UK a E36 M3 is named after me in my favorite color.
lol u used your indicators

And the problem is?
yeah not a proper m3 driver move right there. He doesn't use the stuff that he teaches his students in the lectures of how to become a proper BMW driver! Very disappointing... Not to mention he didn't bring his Bluetooth headset, his reflective sunglasses and his naturally colored tie!
So much for being a BMW driving instructor. He failed to follow his very own teaching!.BMW driver are not supposed use their indicator Alex.
After he used the mirror I started having dental flashbacks.
3500 pounds for those repairs and probably some replacement, including the rust repairs, with paint, seals, etc? That is still a very good deal man
"After James is done prodding Colins rear end...." I'm sure you could have kept that private stuff to yourself?!
Lucky you bought it three years ago :D an m3 under 10k in this shape is pretty rare right now

AYYYYYYY and its got rust but. Fixing it dw :)
Sees sway bar is unattached, proceeds to test the 0 to 60. Smart
ProCityGaming oh, you know best do you? marvelous.
We can only assume that that wouldn't be the logical thing to do
ProCityGaming Sway bar does nothing to affect 0-100 times. All it does is add stiffness to the front suspension, and make it more firm. any car can go in a straight line without a sway bar..
Posts negativity about sway bar, knows nothing about sway bars. Smart.
I can't believe this is 4 years old already , well Alex hasn't aged too badly
Wether you brought a good or not soo good M3 E36 M3 , you never screwup buying a M3 mate!
Karnige Vlogs totally agree! People called me crazy for buying mine because it had some miles on it, and it was actively on fire when I bought it, but I got a decent deal!

My e36 has 405,000 miles and still running. I've beat the f out the car chipped the ECU only and suspension changed. No rust problems to bits and parts falling off or breaking. Yeah the horse power lacked before but it real won't die. Lol Best 3 I ever bought
how the fuck, my e36 m3 lasted to 210k miles :(((
living4ultron!!!! No shit
the rust is not that bad. I've seen worse and the owners still keep driving

+FatUselessShitLumpBehindABlackUndertakerDildo i like him cuz of pootis and sandvich
honestly most of those issues are pretty damn common on older performance cars,. not to mention you cant expect everyone to take perfect care of it. this is why you always make the seller give you an up to date inspection.
14:35, for a brit he actually pronounced it really well.
MFUnicornBey I was told Alex is half German......
Ah so thats why he looks a bit german, I thought so.

Happy days! :)
you screwed up by buying a car without doing the checking you're doing now to look "professional".
james pond yes, I too enjoy taking my 2 post lift with me to the drives of sellers houses just so I can take a look under the car
Scary that passed the MOT! The Irish NCT would have failed it on the lights alone.
@Blake Belladonna Those RWBY Profiles haunt me.
It wouldn’t have passed an MOT ... it’s clearly a dodgy one ... you know ... send a large amount of money by post (don’t forget your reg plate) and in return you get a clear MOT
Stop calling my exact car a lemon just for click bait `humour` when you know damn well it is a great car.
+Dobson Ironmonger That's exactly what I was wondering. Get the inspection done before you buy. Nice video, though. Well done.
+Gregory Wills yeah it was a great video, but it seems like a guy with this amount of knowledge on cars should be able to know that he should get it inspected before he buys
+Dobson Ironmonger
He said the car passed tests on December with minimal issues.
+ODETHIOUS true good point i forgot about that lol
+Dobson Ironmonger
ey, no problem.
3500 is pretty cheap, with all that ust n leaks i would've guesssed more.. pretty sure they didn't include head gasket yet
I think at that point they were being kind.
I know I'm late to the party, but I wanted to point out that he's talking about British Pounds Sterling, not Dollars. 3500£ is a lot for a car he paid 6900£ for...
that's 3500 every six moths on that shitter
What a super video, and what a great bloke the chap at Munich Legends seems. Toll!
This can't be real, can it??? Isn't this guy a car guy and KNOWS to get a PPI BEFORE buying a Bimmer?? (or any car)
Why didn't you inspect it first before making it an official buy?
Many garages don’t allow it
£3500 of work on a 20 year old, 130k mile performance car? That’s not a lemon, that’s just normal
Will there be a Project M3 series?
Who else thought it was going to be another lemon song?
I still think this is the best looking M3 ever. Fucking gorgeous.
if anyone can hear "Ellie Goulding-On my Mind" in this video u get a potato
9:40 mate
+Potatov3 I like potatoes!

Potatov3
Daaaaaaaaaamn you got good ears.
How are u supposed to prevent the car from rusting? Seems impossible
Live in an area that doesn't need salt on the road. Looking at a 300CI 2001 now. Not a spec of rust under it
buy a Delorean
cause stainless steel is famous for rusting right
Just dont store it outside, make sure seals are in good condition, have a proper undercoating under the car and if you can avoid driving it in the winter because of salt. The main reason for a buying a winter beater.
And don't live in britain.
Stainless steel is expensive and fucking hard to machine.
That M1 in the intro is just beautiful.
good job an buying a lemon but I thought lemons were supposed to make you sour not salty
Why didn't you get it inspected before?
+Tech Assistant or at least look at the basics yourself?
Because he's a true idiot when it comes to cars....
kdr0003 lol
A car that old is going to have some rust somewhere - no biggie!
... But, you summed it up pretty well - it's a piece of Scheitzer!
are u going to make the car throttle app for ios
There's an android app but not an iOS app? Backwards but alright lol

+Razvan J doesn't mean it's a good car lots of people spend money to restore a delorean even if it's a shit car
*Toyota
Ftfy
+John Doe Toyota reliability is a good thing.
+Razvan J Top gear also said Lexus lfa was the best car... ever
That was a great inspection
This is ridiculous! It's not a lemon, it is a 12 plus year old car, this mechanic is getting paid to note down evry bit of rust etc. Any car this age would have all this and more even if it has hardly been driven, You would be lucky that it doesn't need a gear box or engine rebuild, A car this age would need a full respray to look it's best anyway. Stuff can start to rust within two years if it gets any type of scrape or damage.
More rust than my 24 year old Celica. That BMW looks quite poor for its age.
My car is 21 years old with 540000 KMs on it and it is in a lot better condition than that
£3500 to repair simple jobs that any competent DIYer could fix. The more I see of this guy, the more I'm reminded of Snowflakes. Remarkable that he needs someone to tell him lights not working, water in the boot and oil leaks. He seems to be the Stevie Wonder of motoring, but without the musical ability.
Awesome video!!!!! This shows why you do a pre-purchase inpsection. Hard to haggle when you dont have a list of faults. Thanks for making this
Bullshit title.
I read all of this in Hank Hill's voice.
You know there is difference between used and abused. That car isn't that old. For it's age it has way too many problems, clearly wasn't loved.
Lmao "It's 13 years old so who cares if it's a piece of shit" My parents own three 20 year old Toyota's ( '96 RAV4, '95 Land Cruiser Prado and '97 Camry) which have had not a single problem except for regular maintenance.
Now....jinxed
damn thought hank only knew about propane, turns out hes a BMW shill aswell
