as far as bmw is concerned i adore both e36 and 46 cars.....but in terms of pure design the real stunner is the e36 has been more than 20 years ahead in all areas,can be fitted with pretty much anything and still has a more balanced chassis than the e46 whose mechanical parts feel like a glove...and in terms of looks the e36 is timeless...the e46 looks nice the m3 was wonderful but the e36 1993 is still bulletproof...and at least as good...owning both cars...getting ready for e93 now...
I can honestly say my E36 M3 had the same problem. It ate it's window. After stripping the car out completely installing a bucket seat and racing steering wheel. Racing Suspension and Upgraded mounts and Swaybars the car is much more responsive. If you want a quicker steering ration try a Z3 steering rack.
MJ Dragon The US motor's bottom end is actually pretty indestructible, but like all old cars they have needs. You just have to find a car that hasn't been beat to shiz, or has a decent amount of maintenance records with it. Or you can tackle a project knowing that you got it cheap and are OK to sink a bunch of money into it. It's a hobby, I enjoy the work, if it never broke or needed maintenance I'd have nothing tinker with!
My Volvo V70 did that too. But with the passenger window. Just ate it one day, and we had a HUGE rainstorm incoming. So that afternoon was me frantically ripping the door apart to put the window back before we were drenched in rain. That was "fun".
This car is no lemon! So many E36s have been run into the ground, crashed/repaired or badly accessorised. So what if it has a bit of rust and the odd electrical gremlin? What 20 year old car doesn't!? Good original E36s are getting hard to find now so keep him in good shape, prices are only going to head upwards now.

watching this series has convinced me to get an e46 But at the same time I see everyone on youtube complaining that the e36's steering felt too heavy. I think the steering was quite perfect, it felt heavy because it was connected to the road in a way that newer m3's can't match.
Don't worry Alex, the windows on my E46 M3 have been broken twice, although not in the same way. The first time I pulled the window switch so hard the button broke off and the second time my car was broken into. So I've been stuck with my windows down or not there, I feel for you buddy.

A few things to note if you had actually "wanted an e36 forever": 1. You would have known that window regulators are prone to fail and probably wouldn't have continued using the switch which could snap links or break your window. 2. You would have correctly identified the popular glovebox sag issue (of which you have no glovebox sag), what you have is a broken glovebox arm.
It's a pleasure to fix those small faults in these cars. It feels nice when you fix it all up and it works like new. But mechanical issues can be a bit of a headache, late models are 10 times better with most of the problems fixed. But even in the late models there's still problems with o2 etc. sensors, powersteering etc. old hosing leakage, waterpump, radiator etc. plastics at least. I own 323i.
It's worth mentioning almost any e46 /e36 off gumtree/craigslist will require subframe repair if you plan on driving hard (even the later ones), and if it was driven on salted road any car with 100000 miles or more will look not good. But these cars have great parts (bosch, siemens, meyle) on a very low initial cost to buy one used. And you should probably timesert to block before the headgasket gives. But, once you fix these things and its a long term investment the car will last a lot longer than a normal beater car would.
I was crazy about my 98 but the constant repairs led to the purchase of my teggy type r. While it's not rwd the dc2 is the best handling fwd chassis ever produced. And it's reliable! Too bad it doesn't sound like a straight six with itb's😕
E36 M3s are really climbing in value last couple of years. In 2008/9 you could get a half decent one for 3k. E46 M3s are absolutely skyrocketing it's heartbreaking.
I understand that this is called Car throttle but have you ever owned a 1974-1976 Honda cb360 motorcycle, they are the biggest pain in the ass to keep running for longer than a week of mild riding before you need to "adjust" something.
they are totally worth it, no rust for me but crazy rubbing with 235/45 on Type 32 wheels and lowering springs... rolling fenders and going to 235/40...maybe I'll be able to take a turn with a passenger without shredding my tires
Seems like usual stuff for an E36, other than the rust. Window regulators are a common failure. Rear shock is a $40 part and takes less than 20 minutes to put in. Just replace it and move on. If you want quicker steering, Z3 rack. Want quicker shifts? UUC Evo3 & DSSR. You're driving an Estoril Blue M3 Evo. Be proud of it, it's a beautiful car! It will be easily worth what you've put into the car in a few years. They're going up in price FAST for well sorted examples.

Your three biggest negatives, the window, the scrape, and the notchy gearbox, are all avoided by standard maintenance. The window regs don't fail out of the blue, they always spend a while not working quite right letting you know it's time to change the 20 year old plastic slides. The scrape, well just fix the shock. As for the gearbox, have you changed the ancient fluid? Mine cleaned up 100% with a fresh fill. Remember a "lifetime fluid fill" is only good for the cars warranty period as that's what the manufacturers consider the lifetime to be.
The window faint it's probably caused by two tiny clips, the window it's fixed by two plastic plugs, those buggers are snapped into two round notches at the end of both lifter arms (that scissor mechanism that lift the window) and both are holded in place by clips, maybe you lost one or both clips, minor problem. Or probably the whole gear is chewed up badly and you have to replace the whole electric motor/scissor mechanism. That's worst.
the windowlifter failing is very common "disease" on e36es. mine has got the same problem. (a 323ti compact, the hatchback with the 2.5liter 170hp staight six)
Are there any good R33 or R34 Nissan Skylines in the UK? If I was going for a cheap performance car, I'd look at a six cylinder Japanese made skyline. That e36 is pretty though, nice colour, nice wheels and interior.
There are but they are not cheap. All the cool 80s/90s japanese stuff has a big scene tax. M3s aren't that cheap any more either but you can still pick up a 328 E36 for the price of an mx5.

I have they same car here in America. I have ALL the exact same problems as you do. My windows dont work well. Glove box and all the time and temp electronics dont work. I cant set the time. Other than that it is still my fav car. And another thing is if you chop off your resinator your car will be much louder also remove one of the tips. i beileve its the right

Used to have one of these. It broke at least twice a month. 😂 For example, it has a plastic thermostat housing and a plastic water pump mounted radiator fan.
Hmmmm I've never been the biggest fan of the E36 M3, I have always thought the e36 Alpina B2.5 , B3 and B6 were better looking, rarer and cheaper to buy. However, Alex does have a really clean looking example in the nicest colour combo they did the M3 in. I guess I'm lucky that there is an E46 M3 individual convertible in a blue/purple colour with white leather interior with factory fitted CSL front end and CSL wheels, sat in our garage. Oh Alex, the offer to test drive my P1 remains, but I need about £3k worth of rust repairs doing and god knows how much for a paint job :'(
Ah, the joy of E36 window regulators, especially on coupes. As the mechanics say "they all do that, sir." Look on the bright side, at least it doesn't do what a friends E36 convertible does and wind the window UP so far that it falls out of the door and breaks on the ground...

finger underneath the OBC and push it out. Change the 5p bulb above the clock and then try and set it. swap it with one of the others.

The window issue is a common problem. A plastic part that slides the rail breaks. 17 cents in germany, but dont forget adjusting.

to set the time press the clock button, then press the set/res button and use the 1000 100 10 1 buttons to set the hour + min

22.6 mpg is pretty good for an M3, you don't generally get a lot more than that out of a standard 6-cylinder E36...

Used to have one of these. It broke at least twice a month. 😂 For example, it has a plastic thermostat housing and a plastic water pump mounted radiator fan.

Hmmmm I've never been the biggest fan of the E36 M3, I have always thought the e36 Alpina B2.5 , B3 and B6 were better looking, rarer and cheaper to buy. However, Alex does have a really clean looking example in the nicest colour combo they did the M3 in.
I guess I'm lucky that there is an E46 M3 individual convertible in a blue/purple colour with white leather interior with factory fitted CSL front end and CSL wheels, sat in our garage.
Oh Alex, the offer to test drive my P1 remains, but I need about £3k worth of rust repairs doing and god knows how much for a paint job :'(
Ah, the joy of E36 window regulators, especially on coupes. As the mechanics say "they all do that, sir." Look on the bright side, at least it doesn't do what a friends E36 convertible does and wind the window UP so far that it falls out of the door and breaks on the ground...

Nice one. I wanna buy a future classic and the E36 M3 is on the list, but for me I still want to get the E31 8er. I have a F20 1er for everyday use plus petrol is very cheap here lol. Look forward to seeing the next video :)
