what were the repairs? I own simple 323i and spent not more than 500euro for repairs in 3 years. Not including Ebaich anti-roll bars or my own swapped 328 exhaust system and brakes
Eric Lee I think the issue is if you don't fix it yourself. I bought a 95' 325i sedan (not an M3) and I have purchased basically every part needed to "renew" the car for about $2.3k (car was $1600). I haven't installed everything yet but I have already gotten the motor to run without popping/stuttering so I have hope that I did research properly for the rest of the messed up parts. good luck with your car and I recommend learning to do the work yourself - if you have time to
# ItsWhiteNoise in the us e36 m3 is a nice car and fairly cheap but it is not even close to the euro one with a mere 240bhp new but it is faster than a e46 330i and for similar prices bit the e36 cant stand any road salt and just rusts away
A similar priced e46 would have also cost you a fortune in repairs don't worry! Plus we all love Colin m, he's an appreciating classic it was a good move!
I like how he said after a few more minor repairs I shall enjoy uninterrupted then the door handle trim falls off! I have an 03 325xi and I relate completely with older bmws that there will always be little things to fix but the joy of working on it myself make me appreciate the car so much more!
hey man massive respect for not giving up on your car, regardless if it was sponsored or not. i love Colin and i hope you have many more years of enjoyment with him to come :D
#1 get a god damn prepurchase inspection #2 FIX IT YOURSELF and use oem parts rather than bwm branded parts alex could have chopped his expenditure in half doing that edit: oh, he did just that, i'm surprised actually considering his end of year cost
The person paying the bill to get it through it's next M.O.T. or who has to buy another car or get a new engine or rebuild it's engine when it dies because it has not been looked after and you did not check the condition :)
2 years ago I got a '73 Corvette also in sad shape. But I had always wanted a classic Stingray, and got the third one I looked at. Like you, I did not get the full mechanical inspection, and I got sorely burned. BUT, like you I learned a heck of a lot on the way, have a blast driving it, and saved it from a crusher's fate. My wife was behind me every step of the way too. Yes I spent too much on the car and on repairs, but by the time I am done with it I will have one Hell of a car. Well done to you, and thanks for doing these vids.
I'm not going to lie I think that the rims on your e36 are probably the best looking wheels on a car I have ever seen. They match the car so well and are classy yet damn beautiful. Doesn't get enough love in your comment section!
I will own an E36 M3, even if the only one I can attain has the S52 engine. I just love the way they look, and how well they drive. Attainable dream car is a great way to describe it.
Honestly i was expecting another video complaining about the cars but watching it really just made me smile.. Seeing it makes you happy after everything just makes me happy aswell :)
Watching this video makes me miss my e36, even when mine was just a 318i. Car ownership in the Netherlands is not cheap and i was forced to sell the e36 when i lost my job years ago :( It was a nice car, boston green, Executive edition with climate and cruise control.
i love the quote "and i would still do it again" same way i feel about my bimmer, no matter how painfully expensive they are, they are worth it. Because at the end of the day, my car that cost me half as much as other new cars in the parking lot, mine still turned more heads, and many people who didn't know what year it was thought it was 2014+ model when in reality its a humble 2005 :)
Definitely a great car and one of the last greats from BMW. Love this chassis and know the aftermarket swap guys have taken a liking to it as well. LS swap ftw!
Thank you for not pretending to be a tool during this video. You're obviously a smart guy, and watching you play the fool for the camera in some of your other videos just plain hurts.
I sold my US model E36 M3 a couple of years ago and I still miss it. It didn't have great power compared to the Euro version, but it was plenty quick and I loved the handling. I sold it with 270,000 miles on it because I didn't want to spend more money fixing what was falling apart at that mileage.
The e36m3 is one of the few bmws that is a real bmw like the e30m3 harder to get and thanks to the green party's harder to own enjoy it while you still can
Carbon fiber is so over done, you little boys are all the same you complain about to much plastic well guess what Carbon Fiber is just plastic more cheep plastic. At least step up to Kevlar in stead of following other mindless idiots.
Alex, why is it the last in the series? I love this series... It makes me feel a little better about my Audi S8 from hell, which I bought in April and has cost me thousands and is sitting at Audi West London for the 13th week as we speak. Like you, I feel like I've rescued it from the scrap heap but I love it dearly, even if it's been away for so long, it's beginning to fade from my memory. Thanks for posting the vids, I've really, really enjoyed them and Living with an M3 is why I subscribed to Car Throttle.
Love the E36 myself. I feel the pain on this, picked up a 25 year old 180SX from Japan for here in the states and getting parts has been a headache. But a very fun headache! Love your videos!
well i always wanted to get a 205 GTI , rarer than a unicorn in Tunisa so i got my self the closest thing , the XTRD 205 , fully restored it , could of bought something more modern with the money , but in three years i've maneged to do more than 30.000 km with it and i loved every single one of them
Just sourced a new idler pulley and air filter for my e46, a spare key (for in my wallet after I locked my keys in the trunk T_T) and some other bits and bobs incoming next week. My mirrors aren't heated anymore, which means new mirror glasses. I still need new door rubbers as a previous owner damaged it. Front anti-roll bar linkages, new exhaust damper, guibo and central support bearing for the driveshaft and than I'll hopefully be done ish. E46... E36... any other car. If you buy a second hand car, especially 10 years and older, than you can bet your ass that the previous owner got rid of it for good reasons. No matter if there is a service history or not.
LogiForce86 just brought a 93 miata, off the road for 5 years, no history, can confirm. 115k miles which is actually quite low, paid almost nothing for it, drives amazingly but the problems have started already.. new slave cylinder I just replaced, door seal is shot so it leaks, need to change all of the fluids at some point from where it's been sat. That's all for now but no doubt more problems will crop up, but I wouldn't have it any other way because when behind the wheel, it's fantastic, and like Alex, I've saved a car from certain death
Just bought a '01 e46 6 months ago with 130k kilometers and each month I've been busy fixing something, well... better said every 14 days probably. I feel the same way as you do though, and besides... it's a lot of fun working on the car you love and seeing it improve in condition each time. Plus it's just a fun learning experience altogether. :)
NickMsiGaming YT I'm just a normal chap fixing up his BMW, so I don't know about newer BMW's. The E46 is the first BMW i've ever owned. my friend owns a e36 coupe....i just love it. its awesome in the city, awesome on the autobahn, is very comfortable, very fuel efficient...just love it
i feel exactly the same about my old 944 S2... it was a money sink and almost completely irrational, but i regret getting rid of it every day of my life.... i loved it.
You pointed out exactly what our hobby and passion is about. Going for that rust bucket childhood dream car may not be rational, it may not seem to make any sense, and it may bring you in despair at times, but where would be the fun in it otherwise? Anybody can buy a clean, reliable, soulless new car. But we who we cherish the challenge, we all know what it's about.
I've watched all of the E36 videos you've uploaded Alex, and I must say I have never been a big BMW guy but this car just looking amazing. Timeless look. Seems like a blast to drive.
I sense some sort of humbleness on this presenter. I kind of weirdly sympathize. I've purchased an unloved 307 with the TU5JP4 engine with 138k KM on the clock. It still has some issues and i've already spent half a year's worth of my wage on it, but it is getting closer and closer to mint condition and i'm beginning to simply LOVE IT. Despite being just an 1.6 16v, it feels great to thrash about and corners quite well. Happy to own a PUG. Cheers for the great vid!
One of the best cars I ever owned, my E36 M3. But I had to get rid of it before it broke my heart because I don't trust them like I do my LS400 to last forever and it was going to cost me a grip of cash to keep running at some point.
Love the car, but I love the philosophy behind it more. Some people will never understand why we prefer to spend countless hours and heaps of money to save an older car, rather than buying something new. You can not put a value on the bond you form with an old car, or the lessons it teaches you along the way. Hats off to you for sticking to your heart, as I know all too well the kind of remarks people give you about it along the way.
Lol. I own a 1987 BMW 325is. Can confirm on Grand Touring. I've put 19.6k miles on my car since last January and it was off the road for 2 weeks and for about 6 months of that it wasn't my daily. These things are meant to be driven and can be driven hard. Even at 300k miles, she's solid.
Please do an update video on the E36. I really miss this car and I fell in love with it. Better yet, do an update videp on all the cars you had done a series with.
Interestingly my aunt's husband bought a E36 M3 just like this in Royal Blue brand new when I was about 12 years old and he still owns it to this day. I won't be surprised if it's the most immaculate E36 M3 in South Africa right now.
Flight1sim Can confirm… aunt is Mustang driver. She is had 2009 and 2015. Both wrecked at least once. Both her fault. Cool rear turn signal, though. [3] [2] [1] [1] [2] [3] My family only has BMWs. No wrecks. Much headlights. -/________\- [oo-[][]-oo]
I had an M50 powered E30 years ago. Was enjoyable and all but it irritated me in the end. Longest car relationship I've had is with my modified Alfa Romeo 156 V6. The attainable dream car I never expected. 6 years + and solidly reliable if a bit expensive to run...
Ah man someone needs to bring the straight six back to life. I have a supra and the exhaust note and power delivery is just so much better than any other configuration. It runs so smooth as well. Also please don't ditch the high sidewalls, love the squared tyre wall at the minute, looks so much better than stretched.
2:14 alex made a lane change and didnt signal, true BMW fashion
lol
Samicus well when there's literally no car at all behind him I don't see the point.
Toasty that's what BMW drivers say. :P
Ultrabenbooyah haha
Do that often 😂
here is what I learned from driving an M2 in Birmingham for a full 2 and a half months: DON'T full throttle on a roundabout into a blue Skoda.
Oh no!!!
Well that's very specific
What about red skoda??
@@kaptein1247 gladly run into it
@@Ex0ticbr4d.KR7 ok, thanks
One thing i''ve learned after you've lived 1 year with the E36 is , that thing is insanely beautiful.
The Stig yep
The Stig next to an e46 it's meh it's only pretty not insanely beautiful.
Fade the m3 is really pretty, especially in real life.
Fade still better looking than any japanese crap
Péter Kulimák I'd sure take an r33 or r34 over this any day. and I'm an e46/e90 fanboy
respect bro .. a real petrolhead .. e36 m3 is a legend
karim lazialle until someone mentions the e30...

Cheers!
Alex Kersten good for you! Glad you made it over the hill of misery.
That's a reach lol. I respect your opinion tho
It’s gorgeous
I bought an E36 M3 a month and a half ago for 5k and i've already spent 3k on repairs. this video i can relate to...

Man 328s are over rated the 2.5 m52 is almost as fast its .1 slower to 60mph
5k is to cheap. the good ones are starting from above 8k in the netherlands
20 years old and that thing looks amazing. Better looking than 95% of the new vehicles today.
Agreed
Your eyes painted on?
boothegoo pc And what do you drive? Not what you dream of and such.
I can relate man, I'm only fucking 63 and I agree totally!
Nice exageration. Settle down like A LOT.
Your series probably has some people wanting an E36 more!
I hope so! ;)
If they bother to watch all the E36 vids and still want 1 after then they are mentally retarded. The E36 is the only M3 I wouldn't have.

thedownshiftchannel can relate to that. Put in around 7k in my z4 3.0i in the first year I bought it

If it's the one on the left you mean, that cracked last week, so no time to replace just yet
If you say "last episode", does that mean the car gets sold now?
Or does the sponsorship just stop?
Alex Did you get the valve clearances done and get Collin dyno’d again? Where is he now?
Still, that's one beautiful BMW :D
to be honest he taught me a lot of things during this video
this is a list of common things for ANY used car purchase.

things I'd do if I had an e36 m3.
1. pull engine out

4. sell m3 to non car guy at normal price

One of the best cars I ever owned, my E36 M3. But I had to get rid of it before it broke my heart because I don't trust them like I do my LS400 to last forever and it was going to cost me a grip of cash to keep running at some point.
Your e36 looks way more clasic than the e46. That one just looks old
Love the car, but I love the philosophy behind it more.
Nooo this can't be the last episode man
I really love that m3
Sharkisahmad is he getting rid of it or is he still keeping it?
Please do an update video on the E36. I really miss this car and I fell in love with it. Better yet, do an update videp on all the cars you had done a series with.
WTF? 1 year? When? How?
Interestingly my aunt's husband bought a E36 M3 just like this in Royal Blue brand new when I was about 12 years old and he still owns it to this day. I won't be surprised if it's the most immaculate E36 M3 in South Africa right now.
You could've bought a Davis Sandero and used the remaining money to mod it! 😅
Money spent for something you love is not wasted, and at the end of the day you have an amazing car which deserves all your love.
6:26 What?? What have I just witnessed?
First BMW driver to ever use blinkers in history.
2:16 leaf proof
My hearts with you, I bought myself a lemon, and I love each cylinder so.
Too bad the American E36 is so different 👎🏼
Yup, but if I were in USA i would buy a Mustang. I love both of them.
Mustang? Ehw
Jasapダニエル BMW and Mustang drivers are of a similar breed.
+Moar Desu but mustang drivers use the blinkers because they look cool and BMW drivers don't hit crowds because it'd damage those halo lights
Flight1sim Can confirm…
aunt is Mustang driver. She is had 2009 and 2015. Both wrecked at least once. Both her fault. Cool rear turn signal, though.

Iv had mine for years and it still wakes me up every morning
Except fixing a bit of rust tbf
Make more episodes of living whit an e36 M3!!!
Milan B how did you manage to place the H after the w in 'with' when it's the last letter?
I had an M50 powered E30 years ago. Was enjoyable and all but it irritated me in the end. Longest car relationship I've had is with my modified Alfa Romeo 156 V6. The attainable dream car I never expected. 6 years + and solidly reliable if a bit expensive to run...
put some alpina wheels on that and then that sexy level goes up to 10/10
buddy no, you look like a failed eastern European plumber #ohkurwa
Ah man someone needs to bring the straight six back to life. I have a supra and the exhaust note and power delivery is just so much better than any other configuration. It runs so smooth as well.
Also please don't ditch the high sidewalls, love the squared tyre wall at the minute, looks so much better than stretched.
7:22 cracked me up =))
if money were no object this is one of the cars for every garage for sure
Is it just me or is his number plate "M3 old as f**k"?
hahahha okg
My uncle haves a 1995 E36 M3 GT (US spec). He bought it in a pretty bad condition but not he fixed everything and its awesome now with only 270whp
